Celtic Diary Friday May 11: Building For Next Season Begins

As we predicted last week, the transfer business is getting done early again. well, not so much a prediction as a statement of the obvious. Rodgers and his team always do it this way.

Scott Bain proved that you can fall out with your boss and land a better job when he signed a four year deal at Celtic, a move which will please everyone as he has shown he can handle the job, even if its fair to say there is room for improvement.

He said:

“I’m delighted. It’s more than I obviously expected when I first came in. I’m over the moon.

“I don’t think it could have gone any better. It’s funny, there are a lot of little things that went my way to get to Celtic on loan and then to play the game against Rangers, which sent me on my way to this four-year-deal. It’s been great and I’ve loved every minute of it.

“There are no small games and there are no easy games here. Everyone ups their game to play Celtic and you need to be on it 100 per cent of the time, in games and training.

“I’ve settled in well with all the boys in the changing room and they’ve made it really easy for me.

“It’s a great changing room to be in and a great club to be at.”

And Neil McCann has just lost an asset for nothing.

Image result for Everybody's happy

Next up is Oddsone Edouard, who re-iterated his desire to stay in Glasgow.

From L’Equipe magazine; ( It’s French, it means The Equipe. )

“I am happy at the club, with the team, the coach. He has given me a lot of confidence. The aim is to stay here. For me, this would be the best option.

“It’s a top club with a top coach. He will help me with my development. It would be a pride for me to wear the Espoirs (France U21) jersey next season. I want to show what I am worth.”

I think we can safely say he’s dropping a hint here, but will Rodgers pick it up ?

Will Edoaurd be in the hoops next season ?

A very, very good chance, hopefully . He wants to be here. It will be a case of hopefully getting an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain.”

Nothing gets past our manager.

Although I’m still certain John McGinn will arrive as well, one of europes sleeping giants is in the hunt for the Hibernian midfielder..

Sleeping giants..like these two, I suppose, and they aren’t fooling anyone either..

Image result for not dead just sleeping headstone

My own headstone will be like this ..and it applies to that lot as well.

Image result for not sleeping just dead

But if you look at the bigger picture, Hibernian face “rangers ” at the weekend, and could still leap over them in the table, so just to be on the safe side, the press have targeted their top man and claimed “rangers 2 are after him, a movie which we have all seen several times before.

McGinn won’t go there, and “rangers” can’t afford him.

Mind you, I was disturbed to learn that the Gerrard led revolution at Ibrox , funded by an enormous £6m share issue/soft loan/ bank job isn’t been taken seriously at Celtic Park.

As Harry Brady predicted on twitter, the club are spending £4m on some new lights and other trimmings, which sounds like nice work if you can get it.

The papers , just two days later, claimed a scoop….

But thats what they do.

They also claimed a victory over the internet bampots when it was announced that “rangers ” had been granted a licence to play in europe next season.

The word on the street was that UEFA had sent back a few notes asking for clarification on a few issues, and as expected , the SFA said there were no problems.

SFA grant Rangers UEFA licence after days of fevered online speculation

The SFA have today revealed the list of Scottish clubs that have been awarded a licence to play in Europe.

Scotland will have one representative in the Champions League – Celtic – and three in the Europa League.

Currently, they are Aberdeen, Rangers and Hibs, although Motherwell will take the spot from the fourth-placed side in the Premiership should they win the Scottish Cup.

There has been fevered speculation online as to whether the SFA would grant Rangers a UEFAlicence.

So-called experts cast this in doubt due to the finances of the Ibrox club.

The Record calling someone a “so called expert “. You can lay me down to die right now. I’ve seen it all.

The speculation was further fuelled by Dave King’s comments during his media briefing at the start of the week.

King had waffled for a bit and then, in a grandiose statement which defies belief , claimed;

So basically I am funding it until such time as the other funds come into play, which is fine.”

Which to my mind will be the assurance he has given the SFA, who still have a soft spot for any Ibrox entity, and which they in turn have accepted.

Whats important here is not that the SFA have granted them a licence-which technically is not within their powers-but that they are aware that this time their attempts at shennanigans are being watched, which means they cannot get away with what they got away with before.

And as far as I’m concerned, thats a case of job done.

We’ll deal with the fact that we have to do that at all when the new SFA man takes over.

Neil Lennons rant after the Hearts game, by the way, means he won;t be coming back any time soon. His fiery personality was one of the reasons he was asked to leave the last time, and he’s just shown everyone he hasn’t grown up yet.

But he’s still got plenty of time to change that, as , of course, the current manager isn’t going anywhere just yet.

Irony still seems to be the word of the week..

Yeah, he’s right. We should listen to his tales of state aid, corruption and anything else he could think of to lay at the doors of Celtic Park.

He’s the only guy I can honestly say will never be Knob of the Week, as he’s on a completely different level.

Thast right…its Friday, and that means its time to announce the winner of the hotly contested Etims

Knob of the Week

award.

In a week where several high quality candidates played a blinder, h owever, one man stood head and shoulders above everyone else.

Image result for craig levein

And you get the feeling he might come to dominate the award in the coming weeks….

Especially as someone told me this was him, which of course I don’t believe.

I’m sure he wasn’t a freemason

Yesterday, we had this..

As we approach the last league game of the season, my own reflections are this.
We werent at our best throughout the season in fact a lot of our play was like back to watching Ronnies team. The team though did shape up in the games that mattered. But we lost a lot of key players through injury and especially groin hamstrings which has been going on for a while now. Something needs to be looked into.
But we achieved our goals. Cgampions league, europe after Christmas and both league and cup won. Only the scottish cup to come and although Motherwell will be up for it, we should hold all the aces.
Charley bhoy it has been disapointing not seeing more of him, i thought he looked immense when he set up McGregor in the europa league but has failed to break in. But big tom and ntcham have been too much for him to displace.
Sinclair has been disapointing but is still our top goalscorer but with only 10 goals from a celtic striker as our top marksman there is where the real story is.
All our strikers should be hitting 20 league goals. The ball is simply not getting to our forwards quickly enough and in the area it hurts the most.passed side to side back to front it has been brutal to watch at times.
But hopefully next season and a fully fit team to start with a couple of excellent signings right back and centre back also a back up for broony can kouassi cut it? All will be ready and great as we go for the eight.

Good review there.
Injuries, especially within Lennoxtown continue to frustrate and I would rather that establishment be sorted before we get nice new LED lights at Celtic Park but what do I know about the bigger picture.

The striker issue you highlight is very interesting. We could really have done with another striker I reckon but Brendan went with the 3. The side to side and front to back passing annoyed and the inconsistency of having midfielders running past the main striker made us often look disjointed and wearisome.

When it worked but it wasn’t often enough but thankfully the big domestic games saw the players step up to the plate.

Big question marks on whether Sinclair can reclaim a starting place in this side. Will Rogic leave as feared and leave a big gap in that Nbr 10 role..one I doubt Sinclair can fill and Charly Musonda could still be assigned but that’s also up in the air with everyone guessing hes pissed Brendan off.

One way or another there are gonna be big changes and they are needed. The squad has to stay fresh and be challenged internally as well as externally. Bain challenging Gordon is the start of fresh competition, here’s to more of the same throughout the side.

Not sure where you’re getting your stats, as according to https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/celtic/top-scorers Sinclair has scored 16 goals (this seems to be European and league games but not domestic cups, which seems weird).

I think its unrealistic for more than 1 or 2 at a push strikers to be scoring over 20 league goals but the 5 forwards have scored 56 and 4 attacking midfielders 26 (90% of total), which seems a decent enough return.

That was done to protect Mousa as our (then) only fit striker and the Cup Final just over a week away.

Brendan said that he’d play on Sunday but I’d like to see Griff start and bring him on later, if Griff doesn’t break down.

The Cup Final is the main focus and not taking risks is entirely appropriate.

Well, well, it appears that the news that Sevco were in trouble with UEFA re their licence was, what shall we call it, fake news. We live in that kind of era.
Apart from the disappointment that it was not true, what is the fallout of this tidbit being seized upon and promoted throughout Celtic Blogdom?
The rumour/news came from somewhere. Was it a deliberate plant to show up the lack of due diligence by blogs? The announcement of Sevco’s licence followed very quickly to debunk the proffered excellent analyses of why Sevco were in trouble with UEFA.
I shall never look at Sevco blogs but they must be euphoric today. Look, they can say! Look at the untruths that emerge from Celtic blogs re our great club. Credibility has taken a bit of a bang on the nose in certain quarters.
Credit where credit is due. It has been a masterful use of the social media. Hats off to the author(s).
The cleverness in the fake message is that it is both credible and what we hope for w.r.t. Sevco.
What we constantly have to learn is that Sevco and supporters are run by people who do not give a jot about rules and regs. Their philosophy is that rules are crutches for the unimaginative.
Sometimes the bad guys attain their objective.

Rebus just because the sfa have said nothing to see here doesnt mean it was fake news.
Its the sfa and sevco we are talking about.
What it shows that their is a total disregard for every club in scotland out there trying to balance the books whilst a new club operates on soft loans and false promises.
The state of them rejoicing that they can get a licence is where they are at.
As we spend 4 plus million on lights and a pa system they have to raise 6 million to keep the lights on and a mouthpiece to the gulliables.
It must be cold there in our shadow.

It remains to be seen if EUFA accept the SFAs recommendation for a license. Indeed the 5th place Team in the SPL may query the acceptance as might any team they play in Europe, if they actually do get a license. Certainly if I were the Chair of any SPL Club coming in 5th and running my finances above board and within the rules, I would absolutely query the acceptance of their application. We shall see what happens come the time.

You don’t have to be a footballing expert to recognise talented football managers, success after success at every club that they go to. Lifting some clubs up a division and not only ensuring that they stay up, but to challenge at the top of the higher division.
Neil Lennon proved his managerial talent at Celtic, before moving down south, where his hands were tied between his back and broken promises by the club’s chairman wrecked any hope of achievement.
He came back up to Scotland and his success with the Hibee’s is pretty obvious. How he is not more in demand down south is unbelievable. His management pedigree is fairly obvious, his “rants” might let him down, but it is a mark of his passion for football success. I would love to see him back at Celtic, in some leading capacity, bring him back Brenda, he belongs here.

Rebus67

Mike,

I do not see a role for him unless he replaces someone. Kennedy would be the most likely.

I am less convinced of his managerial talents than you. Some of the football played by his sides was dire by being too horizontal. However, as a man and a supporter he is to be admired.

Some players go into management and are successful, Neil Lennon was a success at Celtic and he is a success at Hibs. He got them promoted and actually challenging at the top of the SPFL. Others before him never achieved success. Warburton, despite not being a player is linked with several English Championship clubs as a manager. In my opinion Lenny is a better manager than he and many others down south and deserves his chance to prove it. When I look at the Irish set up and look at Roy Keane, again in my opinion Lennon is better than Keane, the same applies to McLeish in Scotland, he was out of the game for years, but still got the job and his success was extremely limited. As a motivator, a man manager and setting his team out with the resources he had, there is not many better. We know that managers come with their trusted companions, like hubby and wife, I still believe that Lenny could be a man motivator at Celtic, but recognise that Brendan will stick with Chris Davies and Toure. There has to be room for Lenny.

Shamefully he evokes bitterness in far too many and he’s not liked in Scotland, I wonder why, Mike? I like you think he’s got it. He had a terrible time at Bolton but they were a mess long before NL took up the helm.
