Celtic Diary Thursday May 10: Celts Stutter…and SFA Are At It Again

Celtic played Kilmarnock, in the loosest possible meaning of the word, last night.

It started 0-0, and after an hour and a half of nothing it finished 0-0.

As we tweeted..

This game has the feeling that if Celtic can just get the first goal they could end up scoring 1 goal

But that first goal never came, and it never looked like it would.

Kilmarnock, who thankfully are not involved in the UCL qualifiers, have got the measure of playing against Celtic, and as long as there is no change in how Celtic approach these games, then that will remain the case.

Oh, speaking of the qualifiers…Chelsea drew with Huddersfield last night, and some idiot thought that meant Celtic were guaranteed to be seeded all the way through the qualifiers..

Chelsea’s draw with Huddersfield guarantees Celtic are seeds in all qualifiers.

Chelsea’s draw with Huddersfield tonight was good news for Celtic. Liverpool are now 2pts ahead of Chelsea going into the final EPL match. Realistically, if Liverpool avoid defeat at home to Brighton on Sunday then Celtic will be seeded in all CL qualifying rounds next season.

But the quick thinking diary writer found a way out…

Been out all night and left my phone in the house. Hope no one has tweeted anything stupid in my name.

Back to last nights game…

Image result for let's not

Fair enough. It was that bad.

The only bright spot was a debut for young Ewan Henderson, brother of nomadic midfielder Liam, and this morning there will be a couple of very proud parents who have had two children wear the hoops, and neither of them have disgraced themselves.

Image result for liam henderson ewan henderson celtic

We hear talks are underway to start some sort of production line…

Although with the squad featuring no less than seven former Academy players last night, there are no guarantees.

One positive, that you may not have noticed, is that Celtic haven’t lost a domestic game at home since December 19, 2015…

Bet you’re all buzzing now…

Manager Brendan Rodgers had a moan about Kilmarnocks defensive tactics, instead of actually taking notes in case his own team has to face Barcelona, Paris St Germain or Lincoln Red Imps again…

‘It wouldn’t matter if you put 11 firemen that deep on a pitch,’

‘It is always going to be very difficult and even more so when you have good players who are organised.

Image result for irony can be pretty ironic sometimes gif

‘We didn’t have any natural strikers, but we take a point and credit to Kilmarnock for defending well even if it was not a great game to watch.

‘It is always difficult when you play against that system which is very deep and very low, especially at this stage of the season.

‘If we score, they have to come out and chase the game.’

You do need that bit of brightness and cleverness in there and it didn’t come off for us tonight,’

Image result for that makes a change

It was a hindrance for us because I would have played a different shape if I had my strikers fit.

‘Moussa is our only fit striker at the moment – plus he is coming back from injury – so I couldn’t put him at risk.

‘I need him for the weekend, so he should come back in for the Aberdeen game.

‘If you get an early goal, then it opens it up a bit more. But we weren’t able to.

‘We had total control of the game and got into some good areas. We just didn’t have that bit of luck to break through. On the plus side, we managed to get a lot of guys some game time and we also kept a clean sheet.

‘There’s no doubt if I’d had the players available, I’d have played a different system against that low block, but it was too big a risk.’

If Celtic land the Scottish cup in ten days or so, this game will be forgotten. If they don’t , then the shuddering halt to any momentum that was caused by Kilmarnocks stout defending will have been the cause.

Confidence may have been affected, and more importantly, Kilmarnock just showed Motherwell how to approach the game-again.

Thats the third time Kilmarnock have kept Celtic out this season…. and it wasn;t just about the formation, it was also about determination.

Again, I hope Brendan was taking notes for when the UCL comes around..

Speaking of Europe…

There’s still a lot of talk about UEFA asking questions about the finances over at Ibrox, and if they are playing by the rules.

Now, far be it from me to suggest that any entity playing out of Ibrox would not play by the rules, so I thought it best to ask UEFA.

Who promptly said to ask the SFA, as they are the relevant authority.

we just stamp the papers mate , its them who write on them”

Ask the SFA, you will notice, is not one of the lifelines on the new Who Wants to Be a Millionaire

In a rare burst of honesty, or at least what they deem to be honesty, the SFA said

There are no concerns about any club who may qualify for the Europa League ”

Reading between the lines, they seem to be waiting until they are sure of “rangers ” qualifying before opening any cans of worms.

Yet, in this instance, they may be correct..”rangers ” don’t have any debt as such, except internal loans, and if they are converted to equity, then they are clear.

Are we on the point of spotting why Murray and Scott felt the sudden urge to ring a taxi ?

Maybe they wanted their money back, and if King has said they aren’t getting it, there isn’t actually a great deal they can do about that…

At least, not until this new sponsorship deal, announced yesterday, begins to pay off..

Here’s two very bright chaps explaining whats needed this weekend for “rangers ” to make Europe… specifically, how goal difference works…

Last nights foodbank collection was deemed a success by all who organised it, and there’s a promise from Tara Maguire , who wrote the piece on the site yesterday that

It will go to someone in need, somewhere in Glasgow & the West. Thank you!

Thats the thing with this particular charity…everything donated goes where it is needed. And it is needed.

Each of the six foodbanks benefitting last night will distribute around a ton of food, which is a remarkable result, and a sign that Celtic fans, at least, are fans like no other.

Thats around three weeks worth, and maybe gives you an idea of how donations are needed day in, day out..

Even the players got in on the act..

There was an embarrassing moment when he placed the bag on the ground and kicked it to one of the volunteers, but no real harm was done.

Though someone did have to go and fetch it, as it skited out onto the road.

There was one tweet that epitomised how many of us feel…

Left Celtic Park 2nite b4 haf time coz ma son wizny feelin well. We managed tae drop ah bag o groceries aff. Its ah humblin kinda feel good ye get from it fitbaw the nite was always 2nd place fur me. We huv the luxury of goin tae Celtic while sum people struggle to eat,😪

Sadly, in the 21st century in one of the worlds wealthiest countries, that is spot on.

If you are near a foodbank, anywhere in the country, remember that but for the Grace of God, that could be you needing a wee bit of help.

And pop in, and give what you can, when you can.

Competition for Knob of the Week is hotting up, with chunky chuckler Ally McCoist throwing his hat into the ring with this stunning observation during last nights Edinburgh derby… thanks to Davybhoy on twitter for spotting it..

McCoist comments on a shot going over the bar. “If that’s lower I think it could’ve gone in”

Though someone at Bt sport, it seems, still has a rather childish sense of humour

On the subject of television coverage, there’s an excellent article here for your perusal, by Richard Wilson-no, not that one, this one’s a  good guy….

TV deal

On the basis of what he says in the piece, and of you haven’t read it, go back and do so, I’d recommend the author sits next to Neil doncaster at the negotiating table and smacks the SPFL man squarely on his forehead with a spoon every time he tries to speak.

Transfer news, and Bournemouth are after Keiran Tierney..

Image result for laughing gif laurel and hardy

Ah, those English, perhaps they really do have some sort of superiority complex…and perhaps they are trying to rediscover the old Dunkirk spirit…

I think their aristocracy  are part of the way there..

Time for a quick Brexit joke, before the caption competition ?

And so to yesterdays picture..

If I may

Yet, in this instance, they may be correct..”rangers ” don’t have any debt as such, except internal loans, and if they are converted to equity, then they are clear.

Loans CANNOT just be converted into equity( shares) willy-nilly and on the fly. Its a complicated, convoluted and long process that has to jump through many legal and regulatory hoops(!)

Given such “unhelpful” constraints, the current RIHC dilemma is naïve Directors are reportedly being asked by smart Dave to write off those loans altogether in order to get Rangers current debt to a UEFA friendly figure/ratio.

They really are in a bind that will cost them money… do they:

Throw the loan money away and hope for jam in years to come somehow after hopefully achieving European football and stopping the 10

Oust Dave and be forced to put more money in themselves

Walk away and see what happens to current loan and shareholding

This of course is just to meet the immediate money demands…we haven’t even got to Steve G asking to buy players from England yet!

very good point…I also don’t quite understand how when you don’t have a striker, you still play the same approach of get the wingbacks to the byeline and hit the ball across goal for the guy who isn’t there!

Paddy Roberts at centre forward was left standing staring like a wean lost in a crowded shopping centre looking for his mammy…no chance he will be here next season.

It doesn’t seem to matter what position Pasdy has been played in this year . He appears to think he is too good for the SPL and is wasting his time here . Must be because he has matured as an English man & also K Tierney is giving him the cold shoulder

I don’t agree with that. This season is a washout due to fact that he hasn’t had a chance due to his injury and the form of Forrest. He kept looking for the ball last night but hard to be found in his placement and when he did get to run at folk or away from them he was getting assaulted. I cant see us signing him with Hayes and Morgan as available backup. If Sinclair was to go though, that might free up some cash and wages to go back and see how he fancies it but he isn’t the highest on the wish list for any Celts I reckon.

It is clear that our squad is not strong enough! need first team ready players in a few positions; right back, centre backs, midfielder, Striker. Cannot draw as many games again next season. % 0-0 draws at home in a season. Maybe someone knows when the last time this happened was. i would not be surprised if it had never happened before. The supporters who bother to show up deserve better than this. It is too expensive and time consuming to have to sit through that on a Wednesday night. Hence many can’t be bothered to go. Dire.

John, last night’s game was a nothing game ,it didn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things . The supporters who attended have all seen Celtic win convincingly on numerous occasions this season & last . There wasn’t a widespread roar of dissent, there wasn’t even a murmur of dissent from supporters inside Celtic Pk .
The biggest complaints come from overseas viewers who wouldn’t have emmrigrated if they had as much love for Celtic as they now claim , these people plus those who watch on illegal streams moan & groan the most

Don’t think you can read too much into this game it meant fuck all to either team John, practically a pre season run out

Didn’t watch it for this reason, leagues wrapped up and Kilmarnock are capable of holding out a second string team no surprise here. Probably coached by the leagues second best manager. I’d Rodgers goes I’d rather have Stevie Clarke as manager than Neil Lennon. Better manager and not an attention seeker. Lennon made an ass out of himself last night
I just hope we don’t go there again

Thomas “Tommy” Burns. A man driven by family, faith and football.
Only the darkest heart could not embrace the feeling of warmth that emanated from Tommy Burns, the twinkle in his eyes, the easy smile drew you towards his humanity and love. Brought up in the east end in the Calton, under the shadow of Celtic park. A Celtic supporter, player and manager. The list of Tommy’s football achievement’s are far to big to post on here. So here is my brief summary. As talented as he undoubtably was his football talent was matched and more by his human qualities, the goodness shone out of his every pore. “A golden glow from his head to his toe” If you were lucky to meet him his modesty was instantly recognised and how the Celtic supporters loved our Tommy. He attended St. Mary’s and began his football trade as a player with “Hail Hail Mary-hill”
juniors, joining Celtic in 1973 under the watchfull eye of “Big Jock” who said of Tommy “Tommy Burns has a left foot that makes the ball talk”. He continued his playing career playing for the club he loved so much, winning trophies and cups including six league titles and five Scottish cups in a very competitive league.
On playing his last game for Celtic, a friendly against Ajax Tommy said ” I got my crying out of the way during the warm-up, I ran about the pitch for 20 minutes with tears streaming down my cheeks, because I knew that I would never wear a Celtic jersey again. I ran to the old jungle and paid my respects before moving to the Celtic end where I stood as a bhoy”. Tommy then left for Kilmarnock and his glittering career continued, which included getting Kilmarnock promoted in his first year as player/ manager.
You can sometimes judge a person in part with the legacy and the memories that they leave behind and sometimes what their “peers ” say about their memories. Wee Gordon Strachan said “Being Tommy’s mate was the best part of joining Celtic, their weren’t many better than Tommy as a footballer, but as a person he was top of the league when it comes to being a man”.
As the ten years anniversary of his passing nears, our thoughts and prayers turn to Tommy and the family he left behind. His wife Rosemary and their four children, Jenna, Emma, Michael and Jonathan. Celtic graves are holding a “commemoration of Tommy’s life on Saturday, to celebrate the life of one of Celtics famous sons, at the “Linn cemetery starting at 2.00pm on Saturday coming”
Everybody is welcome. He is “Forever in our Hearts”.

I think it’s more than likely you’ve read “Tommy Burns, A Supporter Who Got Lucky” by Paul Cuddihy, but if not I’d recommend it as it’s an excellent book about that very special Celt, written with sensitivity and giving real insight into Tommy the Mhan (and his three F’s) and his irrepressible humour and optimism, pretty much right to the end.
Anyway, great tribute Mike.

Paddy was supposed to sit deep and allow players to run in behind, they only managed that twice. Rodgers came out the dugout four times in the first fifteen minutes to tell the players what to do, whistling at them at one point and his arms straight up ion a touchdown gesture ? They marked up and Forrest tried that Sterling move where he comes in to the middle from wide to collect it bit Bains passing was poor. Goal chalked off for a foul but it wasn’t in the header and a couple of chances Griff would have done better with. Please don’t say Clarke is a good coach… they wasted time, kicked the ball away, fouled ( but cleverly) and didn’t have a shot on goal… but neither did Celts. Beaton was poor. Hard to pick a best for Celts.

Rebus67

Steve,

It was the same old nonsense of trying to short pass our way through a massed defence. We are not Barca and never will be. Even tho Hendry could and should have won the game, he was a liability with his backward passes after surging forward, or failing to move forward when there was space. Miller was more varied on the left and latterly understood that he had to get to the byeline to cut passes back to the edge of the penalty area to where Sinclair or Armstrong should have been. Padfy was isolated in forward positions and was forced to come back to pick up the ball with noone filling into his position.

Inthink the disallowed goal was because Hendry pulled a jersey as the free kick was taken. Ajer was pushed to the ground and was not offside.

Player selection and formation played right into Killie’s predictable strategy.

Ajer should have been given a chance as a target man second half or Acheson should have been given a chance. BR is an excellent manager but I hope he recogniseswhen he makes mistakes.

Last nights game was an attack versus defense practice session. Kilmarnock parked the bus or the Fire Engine and we were uninspired. I find it interesting that BR has begun to be more outspoken about sub standard playing surfaces, suicidal challenges on Celtic players, the pack of cards nonsense and the park the bus approach. Good on him. This of course gets a vicious and visceral response for the Scottish football establishment. Celtic are not supposed to point out these things apparently. Well the most successful club in Scotland might be one to copy? Other clubs could also pass on the European money we earn them and of the right thing by giving it back or to us?

I am not attacking this blog but the Celtic blogoshere is obsessed with Sevco. I am convinced that many do not really want to see Sevco vanish. What else could they talk about? Sevco is a boon to social media.

We should spend more time talking about matters concerning Celtic. There are many including performances this season, weaknesses in Europe, and the implicit horizontal passing to name a few.

Those surrounding Sevco will continue to cheat but they are in a hole. Let’s discuss ways that Celtic can widen the gap.

If Liebrox was turned into housing and no team played pretending they are r.ng.rs,how much money would Celtic spend, what level of player would be interested in “competing” in Scotland and how many “glory hunters” would disappear from Parkhead?
Let’s be honest, let Sevco or Thirdco hang around, for a laugh, let’s vastly improve Celtic on the pitch and Strip the Tainted Titles and feckin move on….

Let’s think about this, you are forced to flee from your native land because the Country that rules you, would rather ship out the grain to sell than feed the native peoples. You come over to Scotland, to feed your family and to try to obtain a better life for yourself and them, but you are discriminated against. Your church starts a football club to feed your poor and help the Irish immigrants by providing food and clothes. That football club founded by Irish immigrants is told by the governing bodies to take your flag from the roof of your club. Your’s and your fellow immigrants are continually demeaned. The club becomes successful and becomes one of the two biggest clubs in the land. You continually feel that you and your club are discriminated against both on and off the field. Your club is nearly closed down and then a wee man from Croy with a few others provide the cash to not just keep going but to thrive, challenging the establishment club.
You and your club are continually demeaned, the establishment club
continually wipes your nose in it, making out that they can and will double the money to invest so that you will continually be second best, we think that they are cheating, but cannot prove it.
They go bust and then we find out that they were cheating. Now its our turn to push their noses into the dirt. That is why we cannot get enough of their pain, long may it continue.

Yes maybe McGregor in fetching and carrying but Celtic kind of played a four, six formation which entails crisp passing and movement. That was there okay but very little in the way of running beyond or behind. A CF gives their two CH’s a line against which to work whilst none supposedly makes it harder. When Paddy went out right second half he was double teamed or fouled. He made good runs first half but wasn’t put in so I think he did what he was asked to do. Others didn’t or couldn’t. Remember we have players who are limited in some areas or else they wouldn’t be with us so I was pleased to hear Rodgers say he would have played a different formation if others were available. Worried though that thiis was the plan given two strikers out. When you cannot play through, shoot. Always a chance of something but we stuck to the plan when, even from the last half hour it was obviously ineffective. Ajer would have smacked of desperation though and while a stalemate was disappointing at no time were we not in control or look like conceding. GB excellent again.

Hope we have a strong team for Sunday. The lions would play and have a European or Scottish Cup Final the Saturday or midweek. Hammer those sheep and their Tory voting, vile chanting scum fans. Wire into them and the Murderwell.

Rebus 67, I also agree. I’m on this site to talk about my team, your team, our team. Agreed too, we need to monitor the cheating and financial shenanigans but we talk too much about this new team Sevco.

Devoy, We need to keep on monitoring the cheats, they are still at it, its the same peepil in charge that were in situ. the last time they… liquidated, if the bloggers don’t watch them and comment on them, then we will get turned over.. again. Cheated on and off the pitch, they cannot help themselves, the only difference from then is we know that they are cheating and that now they have a convicted crook as chairman. We have to keep watching and monitoring them or else……..

You must have missed Sid’s post at least a week ago telling the blog that Scott Bain had signed a contract and the club was waiting to announce it.
