Celtic Diary Tuesday April 3: Who Is Brian Matthews ?

No, I’m struggling as well.

Apparently he’s an ex Glow star, which i think means his light has gone out.

Anyhoo, he’s chucked his tuppence worth-which I believe is what he charges to open supermarkets and things- into the ring and indulged in a bit of banter over the Scott Brown assault during the Ross County game.

Before we , er, look into what he said, lets get his back story…

In the 92/93 season we went on an Unbeaten run of 44 games in ALL competitions. We were undefeated in the champions league, won the treble & was our 5th league title in a row Back then we didn’t go on about being “the invincibles” , we expected it… because we are Rangers

Er, we were Rangers . Past tense, it appears , as with all reality tv stars, conjugating verbs is something that happens to other people.

Glow, I’m sure someone must have watched it, is described on his twitter profile as ..

star. You just couldn’t write it

Again, I think he meant “wouldn’t “.

Anyhoo, I had no idea what this “show ” was, so I googled it…

SHOW AXED

Flop Glasgow reality show Glow scrapped after STV snubbed Towie-style series

Ah, right. Kind of explains it.

So, what has this chap from a scrapped tv show been saying ?

Know what ?

I don’t care anymore. Its all over social media, so I thought it/he might have been important.

So, I can either scrap the first few hundred words and start again, or leave this where it is.

I’ll leave it. He could probably do with the attention.

Celtic host Dundee tomorrow in what should be another step towards what seems to be the inevitable seventh successive title, becoming the first Scottish side to do that twice, and the only one to do it without creative accounting.

That is annoying the establishement far more than they are letting on, although Billy Dodds, who used to be a player and a manager with varying levels of success, and of course one who enjoyed life in the tax free haven at Govan, went all petulant at some of Brendan Rodgers@s remarks after the Celtic managers captain was the victim of an horrific assault at the weekend..

“It was a moment of madness from Davies and it was a terrible challenge, and he’ll know that.

But some of the stuff from Brendan Rodgers after the game was uncalled for. “He mentioned how Jozo Simunovic got a two-game ban for his elbow in the Rangers game, and suggested Davies’ punishment should be worse. “For me, he was trying to influence the disciplinary department with his comments and that didn’t sit well with me. The SFA panel is a joke anyway with what goes on.”

Er, of course he was trying to influence the panel. So would i have done, so would you have done and so would the fuckwitted former Ross county manager had done.

“It was a crazy challenge from Davies and I’m not defending it. I just don’t think Rodgers should have been trying to influence the punishment.

“He also said Davies was trying to make a name for himself, but he did that when he knocked Chelsea out of the FA Cup with Bradford, as well as playing against Roma with Middlesbrough.”

Ah, that Andrew Davies.

Who used to play for Brentford.

And Middlesborough.

And now Ross County.

Another old favourite of ours who likes to fiddle with figures is Neil McCann, and he is still, remarkably, in charge of Dundee.

Recently he came out swinging on the touchlines when someone upset him during a game against St Johnstone, and despite almost universal criticism, one tends to feel that this is the kind of passion missing from the game.

In fact, I’d like to see him get all upset again and have a go at our manager the way he had a go at the St Johnstone bench, well, some of the people on it, because after all, football is all about entertainment..

We asked Brendan Rodgers if he was worried about it..

He said he was taking no chances.

Image result for Brendan rodgers boxing

With more or less a full squad to choose from, and the players now a little more enthusiastic with the end of the season in sight, it remains to be seen who will get the nod.

For me, its time to look ahead to the UCL qualifiers, and that means we need to give Kristoffer ajer and JKack Hendry time to gel. Hopefully, as they mature, we can finally get a central defence to be proud of, and if we do, and we should, credit goes not only to the coaches, but to the players, who have listened, learned and worked hard.

Unlike the Boyata and Simunovics of this worls, ho are far, far too good for Celtic…at least in their eyes…

Consistency in selection is now needed, and the manager needs to pick his best twenty, the twenty  who will be here next season, and stick with them.

That might not include tom rogic, who has been advised to wait until after the World Cup finals in Russia befre committing to a new deal, and frankly, if thats his plan, although you can’t blame the man, maybe its time for us to love the one we’re with, the one who loves us…

Oh, this is worth a look..

Saves doing it in marker pen and getting a kicking from the wife, mother or warder, I suppose.

And its just occurred to me that last night i had a pint with a man who makes a living as a Mo johnston impersonator…

Though presumably not a particularly good living, it has to be said.

Although perhaps it really is time to embrace change, and on that basis, one club is doing all it can…

Unleash Frenzy. Introducing the & from .

BTW : “In the 92/93 season we went on an Unbeaten run of 44 games in ALL competitions…. ” conveniently overlooks the fact that the previous club to play at Ibrokes lost 4 games in the league that season, including a defeat at Celtic Park, so maybe the reason they didn’t go on about being “The Invincibles” was because they weren’t?

Griff. it will take a couple of games to get back up to speed, but like you Yoker, I just feel great that we have both him and Dembelle.

Did you see his pass to Boyle for one of their goals at the weekend?

“Efe is playing serenely. I don’t want to tempt fate because he has always got one in him now and again but he has been superb, really composed.
“His timing in the air is excellent and with the ball at his feet he brings an extra dimension to the way we want to play.
“He is a good player. There is no disgrace not to make the Celtic team. There are a lot of good players who are on the fringes there or who have left the club and then gone on to play very well elsewhere.
“At Celtic Efe was very consistent for me for three seasons. You don’t lose that.

“The other things is he’s a superb athlete and a consummate professional who looks after him very well so I had no worries bringing him in. Now I’m seeing the player I know he is.”

The important thing is Ambrose knows it too which is a difficult belief to maintain at times when all those on the outside are giving you pelters.
“How long we can keep Efe for in this form, I don’t know. He has his own targets as well with Nigeria having qualified for the World Cup.
“That’s important for him to knock on the door and try to get back into that squad – he is more than capable of doing that with the form he’s showing now. Neil Lennon

Charlie S, I think it was a psychcological thing with Efe when he was with us. He started well but was never the same again after that Juventus fiasco. He showed some good form in league matches but was almost guaranteed to fuck up big time in high profile European games. Big time pressure seemed to get to him rather than the fans.

Charlie Saiz
Reply to  Yoker Bhoy

He’s not a natural defender for me Yoker much more comfortable further up the park carrying the ball and distributing it forward.
Hence why previous Managers deployed him as a DMF.
The pass for the goal at the weekend against Partick was a prime example of this.
Same when Lenny encouraged him and VVD to break out from deep.
As a DM at least you still have that insurance behind you if you do fuck up and he certainly has the recovery pace to make amends when he does.
At the back one slip at the top level and you are punished more often than not.

Plus, with Stuart’s showing against Ross Co and Leigh and Paddy back too! A special mention for big Kris Ajer who’s proving what an all-round good player he is….ALL GOOD.

The tackle on Broony was not a foul, it was an assault and it looked pre-meditated, Davis was clearly waiting for his chance to “Do” Broony
the question in my mind, who told him to “Do” Broony, was it his own idea or did the coach tell him to do it. Nothing in Scottish football surprise’s me anymore and we have talked about the rough-house tackles most other teams use to gain another advantage over us. The problem is the tackles/assaults are getting dirtier, gratifying that it was to see our players reacting to it, our players are still not getting enough protection from the referee’s. Brendan is correct to raise the stakes, the mind games, to raise this and any other way that he can to get better treatment for our players, however I still believe that our players need to go “quid pro quo” to get this stopped, our players future in the game is at risk, or Broony and the other players might not have a playing future.

It’ll be interesting to see how good this centre half Caulker is as we were linked with him very recently. Much as I detest McCann at least Dundee try to come forward and play a bit of football, unlike other SPFL teams. We’re starting to come onto a game now, less pressure is on us, the schedule is less gruelling, quite a few injured players are back and competition for places is beginning to step up a lot. Confidence is running pretty high too so I wouldn’t expect anything other than an easy win:

(4-3-3)

De Vries

Lustig Ayer Hendry Tierney or McGregor

Ntcham Brown Armstrong

Forrest Dembele Sinclair

Griffiths and Roberts to feature.

5-0 Celts (Dembele (2), Armstrong, Sinclair, Forrest)

Yoker, Stephan Caulker, the reason he signed an 18 month contract for Dundee was because he has close family members that he stays with about 30 minutes away from Dundee. He figured that they would give him the close support that he needs to fight his demons. I read in the Dundee paper recently that he has re-discovered his love for football and is enjoying the game once again. It will be great to see him at Celtic park, meeting up once again with Brendan, no doubt Brendan will be evaluating his performance. Whatever happens with Caulker, I really hope that he continues his love affair with football and it would be great to see him signing for the Tic. although from what I have seen of him, he still has a way to go. I always liked Bain the Dundee goalie and hope he signs for us next season, he has played a season with young Hendry, I like him also as well as even younger Ajer, I would love to see the three of them forming with young K.T. almost the whole of the Celtic defence. As for young Ralston, I would like to see him get his chance next season too. (D.F. McG.) Daniel Fergus McGrain.

Yoker Bhoy

Reply to  Mike

Yeah Mikey, we can see clear signs of Brendan building for the future and it would be brilliant if Ajer and Hendry can keep improving. This could be the solution to a serious problem we’ve had since VVD left. I like Bain a lot too and think he’d make a great acquisition if we do sign him up. I’m also excited about Christie and Morgan coming in as both of them are on fire at the moment. Even Scott Allan is doing rather well at Hibs. Maybe we’ll have a new-look midfield next season.
FFS, only 3 minutes gone and CR has already netted for Madrid. Juventus have always been dark horses but I think R. Madrid will be too much for them to handle. I expect them to be joined by Barça, Bayern and Man City in the semis. Good luck to Stephen Caulker, I hope it works out for him (but not tomorrow night)
Take care Mikey, I imagine you’re very busy at this time of the year so I hope all is going well for you and your family on the farm.
