Celtic Diary Wednesday February 21: Brendan to Seek Investment

It appears the manager has taken a moment to pause and reflect on the way things have been going in what has been a strange second season.

One trophy in the bag, three still to play for and still only two domestic defeats during his reign would hardly suggest a crisis, but there are signs that the foundations aren’t as strong as what they could be.

So, as usual, we asked a drunk what would happen next.

He claims Brendan isn’t happy, not with the club, or the players, or life in Glasgow, but with himself. Maybe he feels its all been a little too easy, and he’s guilty of letting his own standards slide. Maybe this was a direct result of the St Johnstone game, or maybe its something thats been simmering for a while.

The way the team set up and played against Zenit in the first leg was indicative of what the curent squad are capable of. At the other end of the scale was the game against Tommy’s Tuggers last Sunday, which showed that you can indeed sweep the whole spectrum of attitude and ability in just a few days.

And then there’s the hordes crawling out from under their rocks again, who seriously think not only that they have closed the gap, but will close it even further.. as this hallucinogenic inspired piece from Ibrox noise declares…

Something absolutely extraordinary is on the cusp of occurring in Scottish football, something even the most optimistic Rangers fans simply wouldn’t have expected at the start of the season.

Should Rangers manage all three points on Saturday against Craig Levein’s out of form Hearts, the gap to Celtic will be a genuinely stunning 6 points with Brendan Rodgers’ men taking a pretty tough trip to the north of Scotland to face Derek McInnes’ Aberdeen the following day knowing they must win to restore the gap.

This has implications of a seismic nature. The gulf between Celtic and Rangers has been incredibly reduced to 9 points in the past seven days, and if that were to be cut by a further 3 points, or even two, it would send shockwaves over to the green and white portion of Glasgow.

Sure, under ‘normal’ circumstances either Old Firm side would be a bit disappointed to be 6 points behind in the table in late February, but this is a new era with a completely rebuilt Rangers side who arguably still are some way off the final product, and as such we can’t judge the implications in the same way we did pre-2012.

But facts are facts. There’s not a single Celtic fan who will be happy with their multimillion pound ex-Champions League current Europa League team being only 6 points ahead of Rangers, and the derision our club (and this site) is receiving from their fansites along with Hibs et al is further evidence of the genuine concern from such quarters and the growing realisation that the domestic gap between the two clubs is reducing.

It is quite, quite incredible to say this, and we simply cannot believe we are uttering these words, but should Rangers close the gap to 6 points come the end of play at Pittodrie, it is game on for the Premier League title.

We admit Celtic’s own deterioration this season has aided Rangers a great deal, as quite simply they’ve been dreadful. Rangers, for our part, have been far from impeccable too, especially at Ibrox.

But for the first time since late autumn 2011, Scotland is on the cusp of having a genuine title race again – and for Rangers to actually win the thing, to secure 55 after what we’ve been through would qualify as arguably the most stunning achievement in Scottish football history.

Of course, we’re a little ahead of ourselves. As yet it is a 9 point gap and that may well be how it fares come late Sunday afternoon. This might be the closest we get this season.

We cannot allow ourselves too much presumption. But we can always envisage possibility, and if recent trends of the past two months continue, Rangers will be, astonishingly, truly in the hunt for the Premier League title.

And on that note, imagine the fallout at Celtic Park if Rangers do it – if Rangers’ modestly-assembled squad filled with loanees and ‘rejects’, as Sutton likes to label them, manages to do the unthinkable and win the SPL, the meltdown from all things green and white will be like nothing we have ever seen before.

And, to paraphrase Kevin Keegan;

“I tell you honestly, I will love it if that happens, love it”

Perhaps this has annoyed the manager, and perhaps he wants to put them back in their place. We hear he’s already mentioned the upcoming game at Ibrox a number of times to the players , and has left them in no doubt as to what he expects from them on that day.

Image result for slap gif animated

In fact we hear that there already plans in place at Ibrox to make life difficult for Celtic, especially at set pieces.

Furthermore, Rodgers  wants to add three ready made champions League level players to the squad. and he will be asking the board for the funds to do that, with a figure of £20m being mentioned.

Patrick Roberts is not one of them, but thats not to say he doesn’t have a future at the club.

Whether or not Lawwell and co release those funds largely depends on whether or not they want to have a club to run next season, as you can imagine what the furor would be should he be refused, and then leave citing a lack of funds….

It won’t come to that though, as one would expect that when Rodgers signed on the dotted lines he would have sought assurances that the clubs ambitions would match his own.

It appears that he has now decided what those ambitions are.

They start tomorrow in St Petersburg, with the second leg of the tie with Zenit.

St Petersburg was the original name of the city , pre Russian Revolution, when it then became Petrograd, and then in tribute to a former Celtic player and manager it became known as Lennongrad, before post glasnost reverting to St Petersburg, in honour of the Celtic CEO for his fine work in making the club financially sound.

So it should be a friendly enough trip for those of you already over there.

Oh, I’d like to thank these two ladies for help with my research..

Zenit have an official twitter feed, in englsih, called Zenit in english, and they extended the hand of friendship with an apology that shows they are not a bad sort after all..

We apologise in advance for this, but if for some reason you want a half-and-half scarf, we’ll sell you one

On a more serious note, however, they responded to claims that St Petersburg isn;t a noce place, and is full of the sort of bad eggs you’d expect to see at an SFA meeting..

These claims were in the Sun, and I suppose on the off chance that they might have finally got something right, maybe anyone out there should take care.

COP SCAM

Celtic fans could be mugged by gangsters posing as cops if they wear Hoops colours in Russia for Europa League clash vs Zenit

The Foreign Office warned organised hoods dressed as police prey on tourists in St Petersburg, where the Bhoys play in Thursday’s clash

We have a similar problem in Scotland, although they wait until you’re in bed at home and kick your doors in the following morning.

The Zenit twitter feed rubbished the claims..

Celtic fans please don’t listen to this, you will definitely receive a warm welcome from everyone in our city. Your FCO have published official advice on coming to the match and it has no mention of fake cops or gangsters. Source:)

Read it for yourself, and you will see yet another reason why the Sun is suffering from circulation issues…

It’s telling lies again.

The stadium promises to be an experience for the travelling support. Its got a roof and  central heating which will see a temperature of around 18 degrees celsius while you’re in there, but on exiting you can expect it to drop dramatically to around -16, which makes it somewhat dangerous to stand underneath one of these

Image result for brass monkeys balls

As for the match itself, no one else has got injured and everyone seems up for it.

Which is how it should be.

Can Celtic get a result and march on into European football in March ?

There’s no reason why not, and with Zenit having to score on the night, it will be down to the fast players breaking out and creating chances for Dembele to either score or lay the ball off to runners.

I’d say we can do it, but what do I know ?

We’ll analyse it a bit more in tomorrows dairy, in case i can;t think of anything else to talk about.

And here’s a caption competition for you to peruse, as time has caught up with me and there are things to do, people to see and places to go..

I totally agree. I’ve seen bigger collapses. Though I think the Willo Flood window,it was only seven points.

And nobody could forecast that three international strikers couldnae hit their own arse with a banjo, all of a sudden.

1980,I think was worse-esp as 2pts a win,and 87,I think we were a dozen points in front at New Year.

Tin hat on.
I find it hard to disagree with some of the content of that extract, apart from the nonsense of 55 and such that they refuse to accept.
106 points and glorious football, it really was a special year and not one that could in all honesty be repeated. I thought we’d be somewhere in the mid to high 90s (best we can get is 94) but to be honest I do expect the glorious football to continue. The pace of our passing, the movement off the ball, and the confidence of the players is not apparent this season. I accept we have injury problems but to say the players we put out every week can’t do these things well due to injuries is nonsense. Last season we were consistent week to week, and when Brendan rotated the players coming in were hungry and fresh, and we replaced quality with quality and there was no drop regardless of personnel. This year some are off the boil and those coming in should be busting a gut to stake a claim for a regular start.
I do feel these are managerial issues for Brendan, as successful as he has been, there are things for him to work on and improve and all people on here are pointing out is that he is struggling to find consistency and that’s his job.

Gerry last season , Brendan & his team hadn’t a very tough season , the season before not like this year’s team , some of this team’s squad only had a three week break in the summer . The more questioning our fans do , the more abusive our fans are , the harder it is for our real supporters to encourage Brendan & our players to play at their best most of the time
Fans have a choice. Do they want to be supportive u& help us to win , or do they prefer to be moaners & groaner who cannot express themselves in the home but can behind num de plumes

However, The dramatic decline in standards at celtic have resulted in them being in a position to print this hopeful missive. If we get beat at Pittodrie, which we will if we even play twice as good as we did last sunday, they can win it under their own steam. I fully expect a complete capitulation from Hearts on Saturday, with Sevco winning by, massively reducing the goal difference to single fugures. With ten games to go. That it has came to this is a disgrace. And it is not as if it was entirely unpredictable. Far too many people connected with the club sat around for months talking about our unbeaten run, which we clung onto for weeks, as if it were all that mattered. Too many people sat by and watched as we again failed to strengthen, or even maintain parity with what we had. Too many dummies spouting the ‘In Brendan we trust’ mantra seemingly oblivious to the terrible form of the team. Does anyone trust the team to have the bottle to turn things around if they take a couple more losses. To have allowed them to be as close as they are is shameful. Remember, they are the worst team to have played out of Ibrox, managed by the worst manager to have managed at Ibrox. Yet they are in with a shout as we look as if we couldn’t score if our lives depended on it. I believe we will win the league but by 3 or 4 points and that is embarrassing. But they will be enthused for next season and will rightly believe we are there for the taking. Arrogance and complacency. And should result in a clear out. Also you are delusional if you believe that Rodgers has suddenly noticed that he needs 3 quality players and will start to make demands, he would need to take his tongue from Big Peters backside. Rodgers is their wee boy and will bullshit the supporters in late August about how Boyata is a CL defender and we have enough at the club to go forward . That’s if he fancies the challenge from Sevco. He might bolt as losing the league to that mob might end his chnaces of ever working again.

We started the weekend 8 points clear of 2nd spot and ended the weekend 9 points clear of 2nd spot.

We have a chance, a decent chance, of getting through passed Zenit but it will be very tough indeed. If we fail, we fail but least we have, so far in Europa, given it a right go.

The SPFL will recommence on Sunday and I can see us dropping 2 points but I have no fear facing Der Hun, when the big “Look at them go!” salutes are regards games against Ayr and Hamilton then I can live with that.

When they can stand toe to toe against the Zenits then perhaps I will look over my shoulder.

A lot of our players have played a helluva lot of football over the last 2 years, always under pressure at both domestic and international level.

Mistakes have been made regards personnel acquisitions and questions continue to persists regards Lennoxtown and injuries but lets try and remain calm here eh…3 matches clear with 10 to go, 2 losses in recent memory, try and stay positive rather than become the prophets of doom, despair is a horribly infectious disease.

At least try and remember last weeks performance against Zenit rather than a 2nd string side drawing with St Johnstone.

There is a plot to encourage criticism of Brendan by level 5 and their minions. The idea is to create Celtic fans being unhappy with Brendan to such an extent that once a big offer like Chelsea comes in then he might leave if he feels under appreciated by our own fans.

I for one support Brendan and feel that now and again we will slip up. All teams slip up. Celtic would need to slip up badly to lose this league.

A lot of Celtic fans seem to have the Jelavic “Its in the bag” mentality towards this league title. Sadly so does the manager and a lot of the players who seem content too live off the achievements of last season. We knew last summer we needed 3/4 quality players too progress further but as ever Celtic failed abysmally too improve the squad.

I would happily have taken a defeat by Zenit for a win against St.Johnstone. In fact the team that played on Sunday should have been the team sent out v Zenit. Say by some miracle we get through, does that mean another couple of weeekends resting players?

I pay my season ticket money to see the best Celtic team at home. If it wasnt St.Johnstone last week but Sevco or Aberdeen he would have rested no one. But Rodgers attitude towards teams means they play extra hard too prove him wrong. Last seasons success was built on consistency in the team, i dont know why this has changed.

The 12 points dropped at home have given hope too them where there shouldnt be any.

Apparently we are in a crisis! Let me pose a different scenario. Sevco fail to beat Hearts. We beat Aberdeen and we make it through to the next round of the Europa. This is an equally viable speculation which will horrify the doom and gloom squad. There seem to be some people on here that just don’t seem to like celtic or Brendan. Always looking for the worst case scenario. They write under the guise of balanced input and yet the underlying theme is straight out of the Daily Record. Sorry doom and gloom squad, Celtic will win the SPL, we will probably win the Cup as well, our finances will be strong enough to buy in some quality players for our next year CL qualifiers which I think we will qualify from and everybody else in Scotland will be sick as pigs. Gordon, Ralston, Commper, Boyata, Bitton, Armstrong, Rogic, Roberts,

Yes, that’s why I said that not all players will be back this season and the players would have a point I think, managers have to be very careful, about how they treat players, fairness should be a given, players/people rightly value fairness. I was looking forward to seeing Commper, how he would blend into the team. More, I was looking forward to seeing a ready made talented centre-half and although I value Ralston, another quality r.b. signed in the window.

A lot of heads buried in sand when it comes to where Celtic are at, Partick Thistle were a baw hair away from scoring 3 goals at Celtic Park, we couldn’t muster a shot at goal in 90mins at Kilmarnock, anything from pitches, referees and masons are getting the blame for all this shite.
As has been well documented, the defence was badly in need of strengthening some time ago, what has Brendan done about that? Throw Ralston in against Neymar, signed a 32 year old fucking ineligible player and wait for it….turned to two Dundee players for reinforcements?
Once the unprecedented injury list is factored in it’s a fucking joke.
Four transfer windows Brendan has had to reshape this defence and has FAILED to do so, that’s his job to sort out.
The Zenit game was a real shot in the arm but we’ll see if as i suspect the sieve will reappear tomorrow.
Too many games being played? Pish.
Have you seen the English clubs festive schedule, no winter break either?

As for this injury list, be interesting to see who & what players are bursting a gut to get back fit.

A lot of frustration no doubt after last seasons incredible results, any dip in form or injuries to key players leave fans hurt, angry or moaning. They see a whole team of second hand loan signings coming in across the water and panic sets in. We have the same manager, a top manager, the same players who played last season, with the same winning mentality, the difference this season is as clear as mountain streams, INJURIES to players, but these injured players are on the horizon. These same winning players, so badly missed at key points this season, factor them in, in the next 10 games, with a 9 point LEAD and a goal difference rate miles above the mankies, its a time for cool heads and stout hearts, BELIEF is the name of the game.

Griff should be back in a couple of weeks and when match fit he’ll stake a strong claim for being an automatic choice. Apart from the cutting edge he provides from open play and the positive impact he has on other players, he’s the only dead ball specialist we have at the moment.

No doom and gloom from me but we have to be a bit more wary until our points cushion puts us out of reach. I’m sure Brendan won’t select such a weakened team again for domestic games until the league’s in the bag. There’ll be no fucking about when we face Morton in the quarters either.

I can see Broonie and Ntcham forming a very strong partnership in midfield and whilst both the sheep and the huns may continue to grind out wins against lesser teams, I really don’t see them coming out on top when they face us in the remaining head-to-head fixtures. When was the last time we actually lost to either of them? Tomorrow night’s game in Russia will be very interesting and quite frankly I can’t wait.

Where were the Bed Wetter’s last week, when Zenit were put to the sword, hiding in their burrows with sweaty brows and having panic attack’s. A cheating ref. called Beaton, a sensible team selection from the manager and up they…POP. Ready fur the next bad result, canny wait to get the knives out, Et Tu Brute, or summit like that.
Of course we know that this season so far we have dropped a lotta points and of course we are disappointed at the lack of quality signings, but the league cup remains at Celtic park, the league is in the process of being won, in February we are still in Europe for the first time in a long time, the Scottish cup is still being played out and we hope for a successful back to back trebles, never been done before. Faith of our Fathers. well KTF.

Ralph I want to talk about Zenit, I wzntbyonrslk about how difficult Sunday maybe because if the sheep
lose their league season is probably over, however mostly I want to talk about the way the diary ended yesterday. Celtic supporters should not be abused by other Celtic supporters, argue debate banter but playground name calling is not for adults and I for one am fed up. There is a ned culture that comes to the surface too often. The manager is not above criticism, neither are his tactics or selections but I think he has done well . We cannot seriously influence it but we can debate it, fine.
When are you going to take proper action to endure this a site for mature adults who love football and. Celtic and not for folk to abuse each other or maybe the majority enjoy the immature comments, not for me any longer.
Yiu cannot recreate pub banter after a game with one liners because the printed word is different, if you cannot rationally hold an argument and evidence your issues but merely shout “pish” because you are not bright enough to argue more effectively then chuck it and give the rest of us peace, that said the diary was good today but please please try and get some sense into those I suspect are old enough to know better, there are are RRM slagging Celts without us giving it to each other.

I agree BJF. It’s okay to play the ball but not the man. I’m relatively new to here and like the differing opinions from the folk who post, the craic can be 90 also. It’s grand reading what my fellow tims think on all matters Celtic. Keep it up Bhoys and Ghirls.

PS…I’m not easily offended incase anyone thinks so.

Never mind that, who are these neds he’s speaking about? This is a site for outrageous comments, laugh out loud moments and outright abuse. It’s not for the faint hearted.Sometimes Ralph even writes about Celtic instead of reproducing “stuff” from Hun sites. If you don’t like it,you could always read about Sevco High Command written by an Irish Republican with contacts within their ranks(stop laughing at the back)……

March and April is when the league leaders show their hand. Too have so many players injured a Celtic team making up half of the Scotland squad and little break during the summet then bring them on.
Brendans invincibles will be back and ready for the final countdown.

We have to ask why Are so many players injured? A full team out cannot be considered bad luck. “Too many games” is just nonsense. We are talking professional athletes and coaches (well at least we should be) Questions need to be asked about the training/resting/playing regime. We’re getting something wrong here.
