Celtic Diary Wednesday February 14: Zenit Have A Plan

Those of us who thought the lack of competitve action would have hindered Zenit St Petersburg may well have cause to think again.

Their sports science chief-yeah, I know, even the fact they have one is depressing- Ivan Karmina let on as to what they’ve been doing during their break..

“We have been working on this since December. We scheduled all of our programme for this match. We calculated everything because it’s an important game.

“After the talks with Mancini and the players, we felt this was the best way to go. Now our guys are perfectly ready for the games against Celtic.”

Some people take things far too seriously.

By comparison, Celtic, whose defensive problems are legion, have bought a guy in from Germany who is both injured and ineligible, a young lad from Dundee who will take time to adjust to communicating in English,  and let the experienced international defender Erik Sviatchenko out on loan.

Image result for way to go

Perhaps its a little unfair on Jack Hendry that he might be asked to play a part at a level he’s only ever seen on television before. Chris Davies, the number two at Celtic has no doubts in the lad..

We’ve got confidence in Jack that he can play – that’s why we signed him. He can play at this level.

“Of course the more games he plays at European level, the more he will develop.

“But we have a lot of faith in what he can do and we’ll see what that means for the team selection.”

Clearly a lot of planning has gone into this game by Celtic, as Hendry was only signed on the last day of the deadline.

Davies went on to confirm this when he spoke of the intense coaching that has been going on, notably with the defence, who have been warned that whatever it is they’ve fallen out over, it would be nice of they could start talking to one another again.

“The manager has been reinforcing to them the concentration aspect. It’s really important at this level. When you are facing teams like Zenit it can be about that mental fatigue.

You need to concentrate, be switched on and alive, for every single moment of the game.

“That’s going to be very important on Thursday to ensure we are defensively solid.

“Domestically we are used to having a lot of the ball, then you come in to Europe and you are not the team with most of the ball.

It’s something you look at in training and try to help the players. The manager has been reinforcing to the player the important of defensive organisation, concentrating on being hard to beat.

“We know we have threats going the other way.”

There’s never usually one thing, it can be a combination of factors. It might be there’s an individual lapse. It can happen in football, it’s about making sure you learn from it and don’t make the same mistakes again.

“Sometimes it’s the opposition showing that bit of qualify finishing off the chances they wouldn’t normally.

“As a team it’s about closing down the spaces quickly. These are the things we are looking to address to make sure we are defensively sound.”

Actually, its quite simple. If the players switch on, and press the ball like they used to do, with each man putting in a shift, we’ll be alright.

The most important job on the night will be that of the captain, Scott Brown, who will need to cajoule, bully and cuddle his team mates.

Davies also pointed out that Celtic are at home, a relief to anyone who has already booked the train….

“The crowd are fantastic and as we have said before there is no better place to play than Celtic Park in Europe. The atmosphere they generate is incredible.

“It’s up to us that it inspires us and it intimidates our opponent.”

Celtic have won two out of their last nine games at home. It doesn’t help that the other team seems to relish the atmosphere more than our players do.

However, the game doesn’t kick off until five past eight, and those extra twenty minutes in the pub can do wonders for vocal lubrication.

On one particular evening, in the corresponding fixture back in the day, Celtic faced Valencia at Celtic Park after a 1-0 defeat away.

That night, Celtic would crash out of the tournament on penalties, against a side who were possibly the most organised, disciplined and skillful that I’ve ever seen from the stands.

Yeah, I know its the Record, and I’ve included it to make note of the player assessments. Valencia were outstanding that night, as I’ve said, but then again, what does that rag know about football ?

But the noise, and the avalanche of alcoholic fumes and noise sweeping onto the pitch from the stands certainly helped.

The Walk On as extra time began.

We might decry the quality of player these days, but perhaps whats missing is that quality of support…

Now, if you think all thats going to make it tough for Celtic, it gets even tougher…

Zenit might be training at the world class Auchenhowie complex…

Er, thats brilliant. when i went to Munich last year to see Bayern the highlight of my trip would have been a stadium tour at 1860 munich.

No wonder the spivs take it in turns to bend them over the table.

Of course.

I can hear it splashing off the pan as you read this…

Six years ago today, a great moment in history.

but, from the ashes they did rise, or at least told everyone they did, and perhaps they have learned, as a campaign is underway to prevent their new club from going the same way…

Or, you could take five pounds and simply wind down the window and let it flutter along the highway, because at least then theres a chance an honest man will put it to some good use.

Who can we trust these days ?

Future Jeremy Kyle show guest Prince Harry and his fiancee turned up in Edinburgh yesterday, greeted apparently by thousands and thousands of pavement licking cap doffing knee scrapers.

Are we sure about that ?

supposed thousands does not look like ot fropm the photo

I mention this because I’m led to believe they will be getting married soon, and its on cup final day.

There’s a visible problem with homelessness in Windsor , the town adopted by his German ancestors when they had to hurriedly change their name to show who’s side they were on when Queen Victoria’s kids started poking each others eyes out over who had the bushiest beard, a row which led to millions of young men being sent to the trenches of France for four years.

Apparently, the council down there are concerned  the presence of so many scroungers and cheats in the town could be deemed offensive, but there’s little they can do as they are family and are on the guest list.

However, wouldn’t it be nice if all of us English based fans who couldn;t get to the game found a pub in Windsor where we can watch the game and pay our respects to young Harry, who has had a tough time and deserves a great day ?

It’ll take his mind off the traditional Who’s The Daddy ? scuffle scheduled for the car park outside the reception when James Hewitt turns up pissed.

Yesterdays picture…

” Press the ball, like we used to do,we’ll be alright ” If only it was this simple.
You do realise, one of their players, costs more than the whole team we will put out on Thursday ?
Too many of our fans have unreal expectations. We are playing a quality side.Look at their stats,in the Group stages.
I’ll be happy if the players can play at the top of their games,it might not be enough, but these games WILL NOT define our season.

That Valencia game…what a night, I mind all us moaning in the family stand when stewards and police tried to stop the Valencia side and Canizares the keeper in particular celebrating in with their fans.

At the home tie in spain, we also managed to get Hugh Keevins to walk into a Mestalla car park wall so always joyful memories of that clash.

I move between unrealistic expectations to depression to rage. I want a performance tomorrow night maybe
a result is a bridge too far for all the reasons CS says but some spirit and a return to form from Dembelle and Sinclair would be great.

I do think we might surprise a few,the morra,BJF.
However,I’m just trying to be realistic,as the knives are already sharpened. We expect that from our detractors, but too many of our own fans can’t wait to put the boot in,alas.
The reality is,Zenit beat Real Sociedad 3-1 at home, and 3-1 away from home.
Even with all our players back,I don’t think we could manage that away result in Spain.

The most worrying thing is that all we have is Hope.
We have nothing else to be optimistic about, and I include personnel and tactics in that.
If Zenit turn up and are attuned as Ralphs piece alludes, then we could see Broony and co chasing shadows for long periods.
I’m expecting a repeat of the Anderletch game in all honesty.
A new makeshift defence is not going to stem any flood and they are more than likely to score tomorrow if they are allowed to play.
In middle to attack, our football has been played at half pace and we have no real flow so we could struggle, especially with 1 up front.
We keep hoping celtic performances are gonna pick up but with every false dawn, we then get a reality check.
Im not being Mr Pessimist here, just realistic too.
It is what it is but that doesn’t mean folk who are disappointed in the board, manager and team don’t give their support 100%.

Keep repeating the lie ‘This game will not define our season’. Crap. he European games are our season and will be for ever more. You are lying to yourself by trying to convince yourself otherwise. Unless, you are one of these people that believe that Sevco are actually Rangers? What will define our season, winning the Scottish Cup for the 427th time or the SPL? No one gives a toss about this. Celebrate on the 62 back into the toon and that is it. If all we have is Scotland then we are hurtling towards oblivion as it is meaningless. We only need to win the league to play in a real competition. We should be winning these competitions half drunk. Europe is all that matters. A couple of hammering s in these games will define everything about us for the remainder of the season. If we are any less confident we can expect a difficult run in.

John once again your clear anger about all things Celtic shows through. I’m unsure what kind of world you live in and how fear filled and dark it is but judging by your contributions you must never leave the house. You hate DD called him a crook, you hate the Board, you dislike the manager, he’ll be off any minute now, and think that all of the players are terrible and seem to be champing at this bit for us to get beat badly so you can pour more of your fear and loathing on here and other places. Our seasons have always been defined by domestic competition like all other clubs in the world and Europe is a happy place to get into and test ourselves against the very very best. I hope that we give a very good account of ourselves at Celtic Park tomorrow and go to Russia with a lead to defend. Of course you’ll find fault whatever happens. cheer up eh!

Ralph, I Remember that Valencia game too and they were an excellent side.
Best bit of the night was the ‘Walk On’ carrying on well after the extra time had kicked off and their players, and even the ref, looking round the stadium in complete awe of our support.
Worst bit was of course Joos missing his spot kick (twice) but to be fair they deserved to go through.

I was at the away leg against Valencia (well, home for me) back in November 2001 and I remember how our packed defence and heroics of Rab Douglas, who played the game of his life, kept the score down to 1-0, giving us a chance in the 2nd leg. What a brilliant game that was at Paradise with both teams playing an attacking game and big Bobo was immense for us, bullying John Carew from start to finish. We could have gone through had it not been for a couple of spectacular reflex saves from Valencia’s world-class keeper Santi Cañizares. I taped that match (penalties included) and even today still show the ‘Walk On’ to impress guests.

Looking forward to tomorrow night’s game and I hope our players can treat it as a ‘one-off’ and give their all. Fight for every ball and show them no fear. The words ‘blood’, ‘guts’, ‘snotters’, ‘fire’ and ‘thunder’ spring to mind. Absolutely anything can happen in a match like this.

Tomorrow night our players without 8 first team regulars will have to try and compete as best they can. With a proper champions league mentality.
Can we win on paper no,but in our hearts we always believe we can.
For me we have to pick the guys to trust more than the others especially in defence.
I just don’t trust Jozo anymore he’s lazy and just doesn’t want to be there. So Ajer has to play, as does Lustig and Tierney.
I would go 3 at the back with this
De Vries
Lustig Ajer Tierney
Def Midfielder Broony
Forrestb rwb McGregor LWB
Ntcham Edouard Sinclair
Dembele
We have to go for it at home.
3-1 the bhoys.

Lumping in Sviatchenko as some kind of solution to our defensive woes, is clueless, desperate, piffle. He had been found out and was never going to be the answer. By all means give them a kicking when it’s deserved, but using him as a shitty stick with which to beat them, puts you on the wrong side of the debate as far as he is concerned.

John you denigrate the League and the Cup but most of us suffered when the original Rangers were winning 9 in a row and the treble they got in the Millennium hurt.We play in a diddy league with a pretty poor television deal. The £30 million would be easily spent but seriously on who? Who would come to Scotland rather than the Premier League. If we got two £10m players and spent £5m day wages have you any idea what impact that would Havel not the dressing room and if one of the new signings got injured on those wages, think man. This maybe is good as its going to get and it won’t last forever.

As it’s the day celebrating the huns demise I came up with this wee ditty. It goes along to the tune of the song, Connolly Was There by Ray Macareavey

There was a time in 2012 that Rangers they did die and all the knuckle draggers soon began to cry, from Hampden Park to the Orange Lodge they all where in dismay as Hector said just pay your tax as I’m not going away
You let your club die, let your club die, they are the People, they let their club die.
Now Craigy Whyte he was the man with off the radar wealth, he stripped the huns of money with guile and with stealth, they beleved he was the saviour and so did the press, but all he did was kill them off and left a great financial mess
You let your club die, let your club die, They are the People, they let their club die.
The lesson to be learned here is never, ever cheat, you stole away our trophies as you couldn’t compete, you cheating orange bastards, you never did comply, our day will come and you will care, as you let your club die.

Cant say I’m looking forward to tomorrow. At the end of last season most of us thought we had a team capable of challenging most teams in the EL. We were OK at the back, pressed well and attacked at pace which when it was sustained could be irresistible. Sadly we seem to have forgotten most of that with a combination of injuries, poor form and CL humpings seeming to have our players all wanting 4 touches of the ball before they think about passing it.
If that was going to be fixed then the break or even the week just passed with no midweek game would have seemed the logical time but we completely lost it for a good 25 mins after that first Thistle goal. Thankfully they are shite but you could see why we lose goals in clusters, the confidence just goes.
We are paying a lot of players and staff good money to fix this, it’s time they started. Not having the back 5 taking so long to look up to shift it that the front 5 are all covered would be a start. Maybe then we wouldn’t find ourselves in such tight situations or having to play the risky ball so often.
Aye it’s great laughing at the rangers but ffs lets not give them even a glimmer of hope.
