Celtic Diary Monday January 29: Revolving Door On Spin Cycle

The relative calm of the transfer window has been upgraded to a tropical storm as Celtic get ready to flex their muscles in the last couple of days of activity.

First in, sometime today, will be Charley Musonda, the teenage Chelsea playmaker who already has a border collie in Stoke named after him.

Celtic have tried to sign him on a permanent basis, but Chelsea want him long term. The deal will be for the rest of this season and all of next. which is about as long as we’d get to keep him if we bought him anyway.

And its not like any profit is re-invested in the team, so everyones a winner.

Musonda was on the bench as Chelsea beat Newcastle yesterday, but left immediately after the game to head to Glasgow, where he spent the hours in his car listening to some sort of folk music CD put together by his new teammates.

There should be a replacement goalkeeper heading in either today or tomorrow as well. Craig gordons injury isn;t as bad as first feared, but its still going to keep him out for a while, and whilst Dorus Des Vries is a decent back up, even goalkeepers have to be match fit, and he isn’t.

Who will be the new goalkeeper ?

We don’t know, but we have heard Alex McLeish has thrown his hat into the ring.

We do know that a certain whatsapp group have been talking about John McGinn again, and the consensus seems to be that he will still be coming, all the bits and bobs have been agreed, but it may now be in the summer, or the summer after that and so on.

He’ll be here, just don’t know when.

I’ll be happy if he doesn;t show until summer, as our credibility has already taken a battering with the arrival of Musonda…

From the diary of May 14, last year…

Transfer shite, and Fabio Borini’s name has surfaced again, as apparently there’s a release clause in his contract should Sunderland be relegated, which he asked for  when they hired David Moyes..

Then there’s Lucas Leiva, who is out of contract at Liverpool, and Charley Musonda of Chelsea.

Musonda would go on to sign his new deal at Chelsea, but that alone wasn’t enough to keep him there. With a loan move he gets the London allowance in his wages, but gets to play for a big club as well.

Football Insider summed it up..

Celtic are about to pull off the deal of the January transfer window. Musonda is a very talented player and is destined to eventually play first-team football in the Premier League and become a full international for Belgium. He is unlikely to have a future at Chelsea with their controversial youth system that sees young players signed from across Europe and then farmed out on loan, but it is something good that the Bhoys should latch on to. Patrick Roberts arrived at Parkhead in similar fashion a couple of years back before extending his stay by a further year in the summer. If Musonda makes anywhere near the impact Roberts did, then he will be a great signing.

Except of course Matthew Lindsay in the Herald, who not only now has to write about Celtic, which makes his arm ache, he can’t find anything positive to say ( Hang on, at least he’s consistently negative. you’re up and down like a dime dollies drawers-Ed )

BRENDAN Rodgers’ far from upbeat demeanour in the past four weeks has led to understandable speculation he has been frustrated in his attempts to strengthen his Celtic squad.

Whether that is because he has failed to land the players he has gone after during the January transfer window – other, that is, than Marvin Compper and Lewis Morgan, who have both been brought on board – or is due to the fact he has been denied the funds he has requested from the Parkhead hierarchy is unclear.

But if it has been the latter, if major shareholder Dermot Desmond hadn’t been swayed by appeals for the purse strings to be loosened, then the Northern Irishman will have been able to present a strong argument for more money to be made available to him on Saturday evening.

It isn’t just the injuries which Craig Gordon and Leigh Griffiths suffered during the course of the 1-0 win over Hibernian at Celtic Park which will necessitate more players being brought in during the coming days.

The flatness of the home team’s all-round performance and the narrowness of the win highlighted the need for reinforcements to arrive in the East End of Glasgow before midnight on Wednesday.

The Scottish champions, once again, were some way below their best.

Er, Celtic adapted to see out a difficult win against difficult opponents in a way that had it happened in a European game would have had us praising both their maturity and professionalism.

Poor Matt. He must hate his job. Just think though, if he’s writing about Celtic all he has to do is tell it like he thinks. Supporters appreciate that.

Mind you , if he has to think about what he writes, I can begin to see where the problem lies.

With Leigh Griffiths picking up a knock on Saturday as well, the spotlight has fallen on moussa Dembele, who will now get a run in the team. Which is something neither he or Griffiths has had this season.

Big things are expected of the Frenchman who looked a little rusty on Saturday, but did begin to show signs of the nifty footwork and off the ball work we have seen him excel at over the last year or so.

The Griffiths injury also means the club may need to resist any bids forthcoming from the lower EPL, and lets be honest, thats all we will see.

Olivier Ntcham, himself a player who is on the up, reckons it won’t be too difficult to get Dembele back up there with him.

“It is not about Leigh now, it is just about Moussa. He is a young player and I think he is feeling good here.

“For me, he is here and he is going to be here until I don’t know when but this season anyway. He is my friend and I believe in him.”

With Patrick roberts about to come back and prove that its not being out of the side that makes you world class, but what you do when you get back into it, then perhaps we can look forward to the rest of the season, and the Zenit game in particular, with a little bit more optimism than this time last month.

elsewhere, and over on the Scottish football monitor site, Auldheid has asked a significant question…

Is Regan A Diddy ? ss0ska0GG6

Follow that link, but make sure you’ve a coffee and biscuits.

Read the evidence, and you will probably come to the same conclusion as me, the reasons for which will be outlined in a few pieces to appear on this site this week.

Apart from that, the piece itself is a well researched and superbly put together indictment of Regans time in office, and deserves as wide an audience as possible.

It has been sent to the SMSM, but lets face it, they hate anything that makes them look incapable, and that in itself is a fairly long list.

Will one of them be brave enough to refer to this in his paper ?

One of the papers did carry a story yesterday which kind of sums up newspaper double standards in twenty first century Scotland…

Gordon Parks of the Daily Record said this…

Ah , not yesterday , of course, but after Hibs fans , who had never seen their club win the Scottish cup, invaded the pitch at Hampden to savour the moment.

Today, the official Record line, written by Craig Swan, about pitch invasion had shifted somewhat, after delirious “rangers ” fans won a historic victory against bottom of the table Ross County in Dingwall…

Rangers fans nearly suffocated me but it wasn’t as bad as being crushed by Grado admits Jason Cummings

The Rangers striker struggled to breath as supporters celebrated his goal but had good training from a wrestling bout with Grado.

He’ll be alright then, if opposition fans run on and try to strangle him.

Jason Cummings reckons he was praying for the police to save him from suffocation after breaking his Rangers duck.

The livewire striker enjoyed a raucous celebration with jubilant Ibrox fans after bagging the match-winner in his new-team’s win over Ross County in Dingwall.

Cummings had only been on the field for five minutes when he cracked his effort.

Savouring a first top-flight goal, the 22-year-old slid on his knees in front of the supporters, only to be mobbed and swamped.

“Raucous “, “jubilant ” “Savouring ”

Cummings went from party mood to panic mode and said: “I thought I’d died! Honestly, I didn’t think I was going to get up and I was praying for the coppers to come and get them off me!

“It was good for the first 10 seconds then I couldn’t breathe but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I was crushed more with Grado, he’s a bit bigger.

“I can’t remember how many were on top of me, I just remember a big pair of denim jeans in my face.

Image result for fat rangers fan

“I did a knee slide and the momentum of the wet pitch took me into the fan. So I was kind of stuck but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It was fantastic and I’m buzzing. The fans were different class and I was saying to the boys that if I got on I would have to score and go sliding into the fans.

“But the fans deserved the
celebration, travelling away up here, so I celebrated with them.

Aye, it was a big game for them.

And the supporters ?

And yet, when Hibernian won the cup…pitch invasions were viewed slightly differently, and inaccurately, by the Record..

Every Rangers player on pitch was attacked or spat on by Hibs fans during Hampden riot

IBROX dressing-room source reveals that all 11 Gers stars who finished the game were either kicked, punched or spat on as they tried to leave the field.

Of course, this didn’t happen. The Record never did apologise to Hibernian fans, who surely were just being passionate, raucous and jubilant ….

There is some good news though. It looks like a major battle aginst sectarianism has been won…well, I think so..

I don’t know what happened there, or how it happened.

Or here…

Finally, a word from MSP James Dornan.. in response to the sounds of sectarian songs eminating from Dingwall via the telly yesterday…

James Dornan SNP Retweeted GAPonsonby

There we go looks like your repeal bill is working already. Congratulations!

Er, it hasn’t been repealed yet, and therefore shouldn’t the police be making arrests ?

They weren’t , and thats why this unworkable and excessive law should be repealed…

Then again, isn’t this some sort of sectarian incitement, from Chris MacLaughlin..

Hang on..blood ?

They were up to their knees in it. They said so….

Never watched their game but I read English on the BBC. He went to lengths to talk of how contentious the first penalty was and then immediately said there was no doubt in the world that the second one was never a penalty. No reasons why, just cos. But it sounds as though Ross county were absolutely awful. Hardly a surprise.

Just like to get the facts right and all that.

And now this…

Its 2 days to go till Window closes and now we make our 2nd first team capture ( with Comperr already out injured). Charlie might very well be a great player and we may be lucky to have him but I just feel like sighing.

Celtic are like the guy who rents fancy cars to look nice in his driveway and never just buys a quality motor and makes plans for lots of memory laden trips in it.

Its all fine hiring a fancy tuxedo but a good quality suit purchase will do a lot more for you in the long run.

Our best player is Scott Brown by a mile..he has been there 10 years..how many of the players who have arrived in last 18 months with make 4 years let alone 10some might not even make 2 years. We seem to have no long term plan.

With the greatest respect Des,that ‘quality’ player to buy,you so desire, costs upwards of 10M,in today’s inflated market.
We plan,short term,for CL qualifiers.Musonda is outstanding business,for this purpose.Compper will also settle in,for qualifiers,for this purpose,as will Morgan,and other additions.
For domestic football,we can’t spend big.
Zenit ? Spent 80M,this season alone.Yet many Tims are fixated by this game, and panicking about our defence ?
Reality is,our goals are 7IAR,back-to-back Trebled, and ready for CL qualifiers.

I hear you but then I think – we have the CL Money, Season Book Money, Europa games Money, Virgil sell on Money…and our centre half purchases…1 guy from a German teams subs bench and offers being made for a guy who Dundee got for heehaw..total outlay..£2m max and the defence quality boost and confidence levels boost – negligible if at all

Will said players come ?
I do think we will buy big for defence in the summer.

But…When will we buy big for defence in a World Cup Summer?
Traditionally its a holding pattern for signings when a big tourney is on.

Any big players will either
Be at the World Cup and signed up or be there and hoping to start a bidding war after a good tourney.

I will be happy to go with a stable defence…its the fragility that is the issue..first bit of pressure and any centre pairing we currently have ( I appreciate Comperr here to help that calm need) seems to get scared so I dont ask for megastars, just guys who can clear lines and pass to a team mate when needed.

You’ve just answered your own question, Broonie and perhaps K.T. aside
why bother making a long term plan, when because of Bosman, if you develop and promote a talented player, or when you pick up an untried player cheaply in another poorer league, then they will want to earn more in another league. Celtic to them is just a stepping stone to better wages.
Example 1. Dembelle.
Example 2. VVD.
So because of our poorer league and its unfortunate position with the richer league down the M74, the player will come to the jealous notice of our neighbours, who will try to pick him up cheaply. Unfortunately loyalty ended with Bosman. KTF Regan GTF.

Reply to  Mike

Dembele and VVD were bought as part of Project Sell On. not Project Sell them the club.

They were also BOUGHT, not loaned.

Its the loan idea that is short termist and I know it worked with Sammy but the “taste and try afore you even consider trying to buy” idea just doesn’t sound like a long term plan you would expect a good manager to support.

Ultimately your playing Stop-Start-repeat all over again, soon all our players will be on stuart Armstrong style extensions…one window at a time and nothing beyond

Ah, for stepping stones.. I could offer you a Ryan Christie..a boy that wants to play for us and has ability but it doesn’t really look like he will ever get the chance..will he now face a 3rd year out on loan?

Mike
Reply to  Desimond

Yeah and it worked, How can there be a long term plan, Bosman killed any hope of any poorer league’s forming any long term plans. Do you think that Musonda or Roberts would be at Celtic in any capacity if there was no loan system..no.
If we develop Christie and he becomes successful then he would join Armstrong, VVD, Wanyama, Foster in heading south.
Look at all the other Scottish clubs, they are all the same seeking out loan deals, surviving on a short term basis. That is just the way it is, any player who is a success at Celtic barring 1/2 head south, that is how the club survives. C.L. qualifiers are our pot of gold, they save us having to sell our best player. Fitba. is transigent Bosman made it so. There is NO player loyalty.

Desi,

While we are in the SPL and the crazy TV money persists down south, we shall find it very difficult to hold onto our best players. In a recent interview Sutton asked KT if he was tempted by the big money to the south. Even KT did not deny he may be interested.

As far as I can see, there are three options that could be pursued to address the retention problem. Firstly, there is grow your own, like Tierney. Secondly, there is develop alternative income streams, e.g the hotel, Parkhead as a sports club etc. Essentially, the EPL has followed this strategy by tapping into the TV money, as opposed to relying on gates.

Finally, develop a strategy of keeping the players happy. This could include developing long term investment plans for the player after they finish playing. Help them set up a business, or retrain. So, in essence, you ate asking them to look at their long term future as opposed to grabbing more money now. Some may be attracted to this, others probably not. Thinking outside the box urgently required!

Celtic Symphony,
My thinking is the following:
1) Craig Gordon has been a good keeper for Celtic, i wish him a speedy recovery btw, however it concerns me how he doesn’t come for crosses & more worryingly, his propensity for inviting pressure on the defence through poor distribution.

Lustig- Days are numbered, legs gone and needs to be back up to another RB, not sure if that can be Ralston yet.

Boyata- shite
Simunovic- apparently wants to leave & injury prone.
Ajer- should be nowhere near the defence, he’s a midfielder.
Tierney- GOD!

We should be targeting defenders who are on the periphery of big clubs first teams, guys who want to make their national sides World cup squad.
These guys will be bursting a gut trying to make their national squads.
I’m happy getting Musonda for 18 months, but it’s the defence that is a problem.
If we don’t bring in a keeper and at least one quality central defender ( not the guy from Dundee ) i’ll be disappointed.

Ha, Monti. If you’re a lunatic, you’ll do for me. You’re one of very few on here who can see and state clearly a) what’s wrong and b) potential fixes. FFS,
Let the lunatics have their say,
Let the loonies loose all day,
Let the lunatics lead the way,
While the stupid donkeys bray.
Give the lunatics plenty space,
Understand this special race,
Lunatics are genius, lead us on,
But round up the idiots, before the dawn.
It’s almost dawn now; I’ll just listen to Floyd’s ‘Brain Damage’ and then try to get some FN kip which has been elusive tonight!
Come On You Bhoys In Green
Hope Charly makes his debut tonight and slams a hat-trick intae them Jambo DOBs.

Doc,
It just makes no sense in ignoring the Huns songbook, fucking hammer the cunts, face up to them & get it fucking stopped.
It’s easy, sing the racist songs and they lose the points & play their next game with a stand closed.

Now, how hard is that to do?

Yep, in true classic Celtic traditions, we fix a shite defence by signing a winger 🙂

The Musonda signing is imminent and, although it’s only a one and a half year loan deal I’m happy with it because he ticks the most important box of all:

Q: Is he better in quality than what we already have?
A: Yes

His dribbling skills are something else and what a prospect it would be to see him and Paddy in the same team tearing up rival defences. Musonda can play the nº 10 role as well as on the wing.

Two and a half days to go before the window shuts. I think a new goalie will be coming in (hopefully a young and talented one) as this is now a priority due to C.G’s injury. I hope tae fuck we can get an experienced centre-back in as well but I won’t be holding my breath.

Yoker,

Inam less interested in his dribbling skills than his ability to play a killer pass in the final third.

He will soon get his dribbling kicked out of him in our league.

Hi Rebus,

He has both of those abilities in abundance (taking on players and providing first-class assists). I saw quite a lot of him when he was with Betis on loan and he was a joy to watch. He more than held his own against top-class defenders in La Liga. Good point you made about Scottish defenders, we’ve already seen what Roberts has had to put up with. This type of player has to be better protected by referees.

“The Rebels have won” Fergus funds the revival, the cry is parity, we want to be treated as equals, the stadium is built the support is gathered and suddenly Celtic have arrived in the modern era. “Rangers”
are finished, Celtic begin its fast track route to the top and there we have remained top of the tree in Scotland. Suddenly with help the huns reappear, aided it has to be said with the help of the Governing bodies. Celtic continues with its winning ways, unfortunately Domestic success is not enough…fur some, suddenly we must buy players who can take us to the next level, it has to be big money buys cos they are the only ones who can reach that new level, a level to compete against PSG, Barca, or Zenit, gies a break ffs and recognise where we are, the league we play in and our incomes, read the accounts.

Aye, it’s great fun watching us getting skelped in Europe every second Wednesday. As long as we create a lovely TIFO and sing the songs so the victors can say what a great atmosphere to win 5:0 in. As long as we can beat Hearts and Hibs. The huns are still garbage and Aberdeen keep bottling it so no need to invest. Happy days 🙂

Macca, bigger teams than us get hammered in Europe ( Arsenal for eg ) it happens.

Are you suggesting we should simply accept where we are at N blank European fitbaw cos we’re shite? Some incentive that for a manager/team/support ti basically throw in the European towel.

We can hope for the best, but realistically there’ll be a few mair skelps in the post.

Where d you think the money flowing through Celtic goes( gen up Q ) you think the board are ‘ripping’ fans off, playing BR for a mug?

CS,we pay excellent wages and should be hammering teams domestically. Why doesn’t this happen? The first half of the season has been a slog.If the defence isn’t sorted out we are going to be vulnerable in every game.Four qualifiers for C.L. next time, the big time is slipping away……

Add the above to substantial wages fur the current players, the manager and his team, the stadium, Lennoxtown, it all costs money.
But it never figures in the dreamland figures quoted by some, but don’t furget the heated driveway and the expenses of the board, they don’t do it fur love, do they, or do they. No chance.

Welcome back Holy Sea ( Symphony), and well done Monti
at least you tried. Charly will be welcome, if he contributes the way Paddy did. We do need a full back/ central defender no arguments but if the quality of this signing improves the squad then that is at least good news. In Brendan we trust, the challenge is for Migusse to step up and tomorrow night would be a good start .

Welcome Charlie Bhoy a brilliant signing who will carve open defenses and create in the final 3rd. We havent been doing that since Paddy and big tom have been injured. 18 month deal is what we would get out a top signing anyway before they moved on. So maybe this is the way forward.
Lets see if Brendan has some more up his sleeve before the winday shuts.

Rebus67

Just in! Musonda passes medical but refuses to sign loan deal!

He said he does not like the style of the hoops shirt. However, he will play in vertical stripes!

Negotiations continue. The greatest fear is that other players at the club may insist on their own style of shirt.

The SFA is examining their own rules to see if UEFA have applied their regulations correctly.

“When you open a can of worms, its not just worms that come out, its the snakes as well” Then try to put the lid back on, the seal does not close tightly at all. And that is what Auldhead and his fellow shareholders have done, opened the can and exposed the snakes and worms. The biggest snake (Regan) the DIDDY, his can of collusion and involvement have been exposed and the truth has emerged. The truth about what happened, who caused it, how it was implemented and how it was covered up. The lid can never be closed and Auldhead and his men will never let it be closed again.
Move along, NO Judicial review, its to be dealt with by the Compliance Officer, but if its not dealt with openly, honestly, or truthfully, there is no way on Earth that it will be accepted, this can of worms will be opened completely.
After all there is still peepil in power at the SFA, UEFA and at club level who were complicit in the cheating, formulating, implementation and the cover up. They need to be investigated and their involvement punished by whatever means.
The original LNS enquiry must be cancelled, re-visited and the full known facts be made aware to the person holding the new enquiry, only then can we be fully satisfied with the Governance of Scottish football.
Then we must ensure that whoever succeeds the conflicted Regan, be charged by having a completely open and honest game, the last thing that we want is for more of the same.

Thanks for that encouraging response.

Here is a follow up post on SFM of where I think we are and what is needed depending on SFA Investigation.

Jimbo
Re my CQN post.
“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” WInston Churchill.

I would say we are approaching the begining of the end stage when the SFA JP process ends, as it has to, one way or another.

That will either clear RFC and SFA of charges of wrongdoing with credible reasons or it will not.

Either it will be the end if cleated or the beginning of the end if the charges are ethically admitted or “Brysoned” .
If admitted then football which includes supporters will expect to see correction and justice, if “Brysoned” then suppprters of all clubs bar the one “Brysoned” will have to step up to the plate or it is the end.

The CSA view on Regan is well known.
” If Regan told me he told lies, I’d never believe him” Joe O Rourke CSA at last Celtic AGM.

The CST have been very busy and successfully so on trying to have the OBAF repealed, but any future campaign in the Bryson scenario can only succeed if they, like the Yanks in 1941, enter the fray in some capacity.
The equivalents from other clubs would be more than welcome allies and just as FAC had a strong Celtic engine driving it, a “CHFG” Campaign for Honest Football Governance needs an engine.

An engine needs a starting motor with authority and if the honest governance objective is to be achieved the CSA and CST jointly are in an excellent position in terms being representative of supporters in numbers and experience in driving change, to take on that role.

( Guess who was watching both Churchill and The Darkest Hour?)

Brendan has delivered 4 top class signings since he came, that’s the difference between club class and world class.Sinclair Dembele Ntcham and now Charly Bhoy. A world class manager brings this to the table.
18 months of delight it will be watching this lad play football, can’t wait.
I hope De Vries has a great game tomorrow, but doesn’t have too much to do,he deserves a wee break after the poor start to his Celtic career, but he has played well when called upon since.
Tomorrow
De Vries
Lustig Jozo Boyata Tierney
Broony Ntcham
Forrest McGregor Sinclair
Dembele
Charley to come on with 25 mins to go and score.
Subs Goalie, Charly,Bitton,Ajer,Johnson Kouassi.
5-1 the hoops.

3-1 the hoops.

Welcome to Paradise, Charly ‘Junior’ Musonda.

PS Don’t think I don’t know that Celtic PLC know how to release squirrels and generally take the piss out of our fans, but I genuinely think this lhad will improve us at the business end of the park in the business end of the season. Just keep the fucking ball in the opposition’s half, well away from our ‘defence’ and we’ll hope for the best. Hail! Hail!

Gary, we’re seeing the same things as many on ETims do. I’d mentioned on here and elsewhere about the alarming rise in unexplained costs and so have others, e.g. on Phil Mac’s site in the last 2 to 3 weeks. Some of the Bhoys had a far better idea of what was happening than I but I’m not sure if any meaningful action was going to be taken or, indeed if it was possible. I actually thought from your posts yesterday you had some revelations to make. Anyway, I totally agree that serious questions need to be asked, but I’m not sure exactly of the detail. 2 years running Euro CL qualifiers money and all the income from player sales recently seems to have fucking evaporated; in whisky making they refer to the Angel’s share. What TF may we call this?
If I get hold of the precise detail, I’m more than happy to enquire of our Board. The buck definitely stops there.
HH FC not PLC (I didn’t coin that but I sincerely agree with it.)
