Celtic Diary Thursday January 25: Manager Needs To Start Managing

With Celtic gaining the three points after an awkward evening in Maryhill, and the subsequent sigh of relief, perhaps its time to have a look at what we saw during that game, and ponder any hidden, or perhaps not so well hidden, meanings…

During the first half the team would have been described as jaded, but they’ve just been on their jollies, so we’ll have to excuse another piss poor performance by saying they were rusty.

Partick took full advantage despite their limited abilities and went into the break a goal ahead. Happily, the jags aren’t very good, and it was only one goal, from a penalty, because lets be perfectly frank, a better side would have been out of sight by then.

The introduction of Leigh Griffiths at half time made an enormous difference, his enthusiasm rubbing off on the others, and more importantly, it meant the others could return to passing the ball with confidence rather than optimism, as the side returned to a line up of players who were familiar with each others styles and positioning.

To an extent, at least, Oddsone Edouard hung about a bit further back and just did whatever happened to be needed when he got the ball, as opposed to playing the lone striker role of which he is clearly uncomfortable with.

Celtic won the game, but the warning signs are there.

The break in dubai has made little or no difference to the overall attitude of the players, and so therefore there must be a deeper problem.

Image result for rev i m jolly

Starting at the top, and manager Brendan Rodgers has stuck rigidly to his one striker system. As a result, the two best strikers in Scotland are equally pissed off, and neither has had a good season.

We’ve heard tales of Griffiths being a little less than attentive or enthusiastic in training, and that his head is being turned south, and yet on tuesday night when he was on the field he played like a man possessed.

And to make sure he got his message across…

On the other hand, Moussa Dembele, now relegated to the attentions of Brighton , Crystal Palace and Stoke City , when asked to warm up, put down his phone,  sauntered a bit to the left, picked his phone up and sauntered back to his seat.

As a result , he didn’t get a chance to play, and a further few noughts were deducted from his next wage. What he needs to consider , however, is that he may have just got lucky last year. playing in a team that did everything right…

This year, he has shown a remarkable lack of effort when he has played, almost as though he’s already proved himself. Or perhaps he’s above our level now, and just waiting for the call from a “big club “…

However, Rodgers is held in such high esteem by the support that he receives no criticism for  having two of the best strikers in Celtics recent history and  stubbornly refusing to play them both at the same time.

Which may not have solved all the problems, but would have kept them both happy.

Maybe he’s saving that as a surprise for Zenit… as it appears Dembele isn’t happy with the clubs coming in for him, and Celtic have realised that with his current attitude the best they can hope for is to recover his outlay and wages, its maybe better to hang on to him and re-educate him.

In fact, Rodgers  never receives any criticism from the support as a whole, and any isolated voices , no matter if they are even so much as asking questions of the Great Man, are shouted down, taken around the back of the building and shot in the head. Blind faith never ends well….

As for the strikers, the current policy of rotation means  you will lose one or both of them in the long run. whether its Griffiths , Dembele or the next two. The high level of expectation demands quality back up, but that kind of quality isn’t going to hang around as back up…

Or at least with any level of  enthusiasm.

Goals win games.

Not systems, not pretty patterns and certainly not  passing the ball around at the back, from side to side and then back again.

If you have quality players who can score goals you must use them.

The defence, despite recent criticism , hasn’t conceded a goal from open play since the Hearts debacle, and although it always looks ready to cave in, somehow it doesn’t. Whether by luck or design, it seems to get the job done, whereas the midfield, which has escaped criticism, never seems to know to attack, to defend or just to hit the bloody ball as far as it can.

Thats largely due to , Scott Brown apart, the constant changing of personnel and the roles they are asked to play.

Hang on, there’s a pattern here…

We’re short on defenders, so there is a little more consistency there.

The rest of the team has an embarrassment of riches available, so the places go to whoever the manager feels its best not to annoy that day.

Scott Brown apart, of course.

Add to that the constant criticism that Rodgers hasn’t handled well in previous jobs, and perhaps there is some truth in the tales we hear about the Irishman getting a little bit fed up of the “circus “.

There’s a week or so of the transfer window left.

I’d forget about bringing anyone in, thats not as important as making sure the right ones go out.

Although we will, and one worries about the effect that will have on an already restless squad.

I’m almost thinking that there is a clique forming in the dressing room, on one side are the Celtic minded players, and on the other the ones who see us as a stepping stone.

Especially as there are a few players out on laon who would love to be in the hoops, and are performing well at other clubs.

Equally, a few who joined to develop are out on loan as well, but that can be explained as part of their development.

But thats what happens when your club has a development strategy.

You forget it has a heart and soul.

Did you see that linesman at the Partick game ? The one who staunchly flagged for offside against Leigh Griffiths direct from a throw in ?

Image result for linesman union flag

Thats not him, although we are aware of him throwing a tantrum when he was told before the game he couldn’t use his own flag.

We have an eye witness account…

Replying to

He actually waved TWICE when the ref ignored his first.I was right behind the buffoon.Didnt look like a young guy and still doesn’t know the rules.

As expected, this was hardly mentioned in the media, but if thats the standard of officials then we have an even bigger problem than we thought at the SFA.

Spare a thought for Phil Neville, the charismatic new boss of the England womens football team, who appretly made a sexist comment on twitter about six years ago which has landed him in hot water.

He’s apologised and has been allowed to continue in the job. Which can’t be easy, persuading  all them women to wear  the same outfit in the same place.

Apart from that, his fitness regime might cause him further problems.

Meanwhile, it seems you take take the boy out of Celtic, but not Celtic out of the boy… as afr as the Scottish sun is concerned..

Crerand left Celtic in 1963, having failed to win a single medal or trophy.

At Manchester United, however…

We have to hope that other Celtic legend Roy Keane behaves himself…

Its not too late to send a quick email to your MSP instructing them how to vote today…

Thats Jackie Baillie, who is voting to scrap the Offensive Behaviour at the Football Act.

I sometime wonder why you write a blog and are not managing at a high level.

Brendan sees these guys everyday. He knows what he is doing. Your attempts to foment discontent is baffling unless you truly are angling for that MSM call.

We have had numerous injuries this season. We are missing that creative spark that Rogic and Roberts provide. We are missing the strong running of Armstrong.

Others have not (unsurprisingly) hit the heights of a remarkable last season.

I agree we should play either Griffiths or Dembele up front as I don’t think Eduoard is the answer but he must have his reasons. I am fairly sure it is not simply to piss you off.

It’s not blind faith.

It’s trust in the managers ability.

One cup in the cupboard, next round of the Scottish cup, 11 points clear in the league and a Europa tie on the horizon.

Not exactly the season from hell.

As for Jackie Baillie, self serving waste of space.

It seems our Brendan has the same issue that a lot of top managers have. They are always right and though many of us see the faults he can’t because he has to come up with the idea himself. Wee GS was bad for this too.

As for all this passing round the back, I arched the Arsenal Chelsea game last night and they had passing round the back to an endless fine art. Nearly fell asleep at times. Even though it wasn’t a bad game. I blame Barcelona, but they spoil it by having players up front who can move, take on layers and score. That’s the bit we miss at times.

2 upfront equals more goals is the most simplistic nonsense ever spouted. You expect it from children.

As someone actually actually at the game the other night, the nonsense about Dembele is an out and out lie.

Not to mention actually falling for an edited screenshot of Griffiths instagram story which had no caption.

Even the Daily Record wouldn’t employ you, Ralph. Just you stick to putting the boot into the people who actually attend Celtic games.

Good writing Ralph, and fair-minded. Something is not right with our club. Maybe other teams are on to us, have figured us out? We are missing too many chances. Monti and others are spot on too about us needing help in the transfer window, especially in central defence but I’m beginning to think we might need another attacker. Brendan has given us a new pride and a new style of play. I think we can at least approach last year’s standards. If we keep playing like we are, we will not win a Treble and 10 in a row might become a real task. If it weren’t for Sevco beating Aberdeen 3 times, we would only be two points in front of Aberdeen. I also think Sevco will become our chief rivals in the next seasons and might run us close. I would like a shake-up of our system and try get Dembele and Griff on the pitch at the same time. Could Griff or Dembele play in the attacking three somewhere, with either one up front? Also, why not 4-3-3 at times?
Something is missing. I don’t know what and it is worrying me. Hibs, Hearts and a tough new Killie away. C’mon Brendan and the bhoys. We support you but want to see you refreshed at at your best in the weeks to come. I haven’t even mentioned Zenit yet! We need to play Griff because we need him but we also need to get Dembele back up to his highest level, both for us on the pitch and to get his value back up. People talked of £50 million and now its £18 million and sinking fast! I am only a fan but what’s happening?

Think Ralph is on the money here. Stop deifying this guy he’s a great manager but like every human being on the planet he’s not perfect. I’ve never witnessed a Celtic manager who avoids scrutiny like Rodgers does. I can understand putting someone in the bench because his mind is elsewhere. Dembele should be putting in a shift that exemplifies his ability until he stops being a celtic player. Like Griffiths does for all his petulance if nothing else he’s always professional on the field. It increases his worth.Rodgers has had abominable noble results in Europe too many for it not to be a problem. He’s not beyond scrutiny In saying that we couldn’t hope for a better manager but he has to man up and accept criticism. Commons was spot on. Rodgers was totally in the wrong with his response and should wear it. It’s a trying time for the manager how he reacts to it will define him

I’m still hopeful we can get one or two players in before the window shuts but we want proven quality, not projects. Much as I hate to see the huns winning against anyone, at least we now see ourselves 11 points clear, which takes a bit of the pressure off in the league and allows more time to focus on the European challenge coming up. While I agree that it’s uncanny to see the sheep (a team which has shown remarkable consistency against lesser teams) lose to sevco three times on the bounce, I don’t really buy into any McCinnes conspiracy theories – the dandies just have a huge tendency to bottle it in high pressure matches.

I agree with several posters who expect to see a marked improvement when some of our key players return from injury and I seriously hope we can cut out this slow square-baw build up to return to something resembling our performances of last season.

Come on Brendan/Cris, get a good centre-half in quick … the Russians are coming…

Ralphy, Its hard to criticize a manager who has delivered so much and how his team has won so many games, compare it to the previous incumbent who talked a good game but who we soon realised was a fitba. fraud. He is a Celtic supporter with a family fully embedded in the club, we know that he is not perfect, (who is) but look at his record. Having said that, the tippy tappy play out from the back is causing us problems at the back, you can see how it makes the central defenders nervous and that aint good, some goalkeepers can accurately punt out from the back and others cannot and ours cannot. So sometimes vary it and clear it up field and don’t give it to the centre backs especially if the opposition is pressing from the front.
For me, I will reserve any criticism on lack of signings until the windy closes. S.C (Stevie Chalmers).

In my opinion every good striker needs to be playing games consistently to get the best from them, especially after coming back from injury.
Dembele and griff have been used in rotation and it doesn’t seem to be helping either one of them.
In midfield i think Brown and ntcham are to similar to play together.
It’s also no surprise since Armstrong and Roberts were injured the midfield are not creating as many chances for the strikers. And again i think Armstrong needs games to get his form back but up pops the rotation again. This was the same with Big Rogic before he got injured again.
While Jamesy has been playing well and getting a few goals Sinclair has not been as clinical in front of goal as he was last season.

Injuries to some of our best players last season has played it’s part. We have missed our creative players and there for our play has been more work man like.
Once we get Armstrong,Roberts, rogic, dembele and griff up to speed and ditch so much rotation i think we will be fine.

Totally agree Mike, the points made on this site over the years are valid.
As Jock said you are only as good as your last game, currently the team looks stale. Only when Leigh appeared was there urgency.
No team is static, players should be moved on, youngsters used and new players brought in.
Also Regan should be told that no Celtic player will be available for his grandiose punt

Cartvale,

You have to have an alternative view, a view to make you think and to look at things in sometimes a different light. Some Celtic blogs toe the board line, E-Tims, Ralphy and Dessi say things the way that they see them, even if we do not always agree with them and that is a great thing.

Like everyone else , we are all entitled to our own opinion,as for being sluggish,at firhill the other night,to me they look slow playing out at the back, and if that’s they way Brendan likes it fine, but me personally I don’t like it,and I’m sure over the next month’s,other teams will see this ,so I’m sure it won’t be easy winning the league this season, unless we add a few quality players in this window, personally I don’t think there will be anymore players coming to the club.

Is Park a director of Hamilton as well as the huns? if that is true what about a confliction of interest in the pursuit of Docherty? How can an individual be a director of two clubs, haud oan a minute was Ogilvy not a director of the huns and Hertz. Their is something stinking about the game in Scotland, something smells fishy, to much of the funny handshake peepil pulling their strings in the Scottish game, with the conflicted Regan at the SFA something aint right, it needs to be challenged and he needs to go and the game cleaned up.

Is it up to us too micro-manage the Managers characteristics or how he deals with the ‘stinking’ SMSM SCUM. After what he has achieved in such a short time. It’s the sign of champions been able to win when you don’t play well, Celtic just have needed to prove it a few more times this season. HH

Mike

Is it true that Park is a director at Hamilton as well as the huns, if it is true, then is there not a conflict of interest regarding Docherty moving from Hamilton to the huns. It was true that Ogilvy was a director of the huns and hertz, Scottish fitba. conflicted by cheats from the Governing body and the funny handshake brigade, time methinks for a clear out and a fresh start.

Celtic manager’s just like player’s should be open to criticism, for all that was achieved last season, and we all loved every minute of it, well domestically anyway, This season our performances are a shadow of lasts, yes we have an 11 point lead, but do our performances really reflect that lead.To mind we’ve played well in 2 game’s this season, both against Aberdeen, the rest have been disjointed, lacklustre, and at time’s poor, the things that are worrying me is that Rodgers is showing a very stubborn streak in is tactics with one up front. Plus Sinclair continually playing regardless of previous performances, never trying Hayes on a the left wing, even tho he performs at his best there, and the constant tinkering with squad positions at the back and midfield,i understand Rodgers wants player’s to be capable of playing 2/3 different positions and formations, but sometimes you have to realise certain player’s can’t adapt to it, that certainly doesn’t make them bad player’s, it just means you have to play them to their strengths. Rodgers and his backroom staff are the highest paid in the history of Celtic, now thing’s aren’t running as smoothly as last season, and some obstacles need overcoming, then this is when they should prove their worth….KTF

For uttering any criticism of the manager I was repeatedly told where to go and how much of a hun I was. It was even suggested that getting shafted in Europe was acceptable. I admit I know very little about anything but even a complete idiot could have told you that getting pumped every single game in europe bar one, against the worst team in the competition, was not going to do confidence any good. Especially when your invincibles tag is earned against teams who could qualify for disabled competitions they are so bad. I like Rodgers, I had misgivings at his appointment because of what is happening at Celtic now. He has been brilliant at Celtic but that does not mean he is not a complete bullshitter. His performances in front of the cameras damaged him as much as his teams failures on the park. He has had the easiest time of any Celtic manager and the unbeaten run, despite some woeful, hanging on for grim death performances at the end. The supporters love him justifiably but the stupid in Brendan we trust mantra is Sevco like. Rodgers is known for being pig-headed and sticking with players who should be nowhere near the team . He did it at Liverpool and was mocked when he came out and talked about the ‘attitude and character’ of the boy and how well he was playing when every other person could say the player was a dud. And he did it week after week. At the end Liverpool supporter were desperate to see the back of him and danced when they sacked him, just a year after deifying him almost as much as we do. He also backed up his bosses repeatedly. He is clearly Peter Lawwell’s little bitch and he has no qualms about lying for him. Examples, the South African was a CL player, Boyata is good enough and now Dembele wants out. The contempt the board and the manager have for the support is awful. He does not take criticism well and what we are seeing from him is a big strop. His performance last week was pathetic and the presser was worthy of anything at Ibrox. Things have turned a little against him at the moment and he needs to turn it around quickly. The team has not played well for few mmontns and unbelievably the worst Rangers/Sevco team ever believe they are catching us. They think next year will be the year. Celtic supporters are getting a little worried because they understand that the Tory board cannot be trusted to do what is best for the team, for the shareholders yes, but not the playing side. And with the manager backing them instead of his own plans and ambitions. we have every reason to worry. We should be a lot further in front than we are. A hammering against the Russians will anger many. I simply don’t see Rodgers being here for an attempt at ten. I don’t think he wants the challenge in case he fails. So Big Pete better get a replacement lined up, but not Owen Coyle.

Just as the manager & players are given every plaudit going when the team does well, they will be questioned when things aren’t.
What kind of situation are we in when some people think the manager shouldn’t be questioned? My fucking arse.

There is a lot wrong at Celtic, starting at the boardroom & into the dressing room where there are a few guys who are no longer good enough, want away, or are not up for it any longer.

Gordon, Lustig, Boyata need replaced, if Simunovic wants to leave, fuck off then.
Dembele we are told wants to stay, the club want to sell?
We keep Griffiths on the bench, a proven goalscorer and yet go with a young loan signing from PSG?

I’m in the in Brendan we still trust camp because 1) the transfer window isn’t closed 2)the injuries are significant – although I think we backroom team needs a steward’s enquiry on that one 3) we are top of the league and up for back to back trebles – hardly the first signs of a failing team. Agree the passing out of defence on a totty field isn’t good and yes I agree they don’t look like a team that’s gelling. Hope Brendan’s Achilles heel won’t be blind faith in one system. Can’t go the ‘in my day stuff’ but in my day we were actually shite. Keep the faith.

If Dembele is showing the same attitude in training as he shown midweek when asked to warm up them theres your reason he isnt playing.
If Griff isnt 100 per cent fit then theres your reason he isnt playing.
If Edouard is doing everything asked off him at training them theres your reason he is playing
Yes we would love Griff and Dembele in the same starting 11 but if they are not doing whats required on the training ground then i stand with Brendan.
A centre half was bought he got injured sods law. He will come in and make a huge difference. As will Paddy as will big tom armstrong, we have the best squad in the league. Bar none.
I saw the same attitude with Viduka as dembele is showing, he refused to come out against inverness in a game we would have won if he had.
Yet the manager took the flak.
Brendan will sort it. Fuck Dembele and anyone else who thinks playing for Celtic is a stepping stone to better things. There is no club better anywhere in the world.

Dembele wouldn’t,t be allowed his phone on the bench…get a grip here.
Worrying lack of understanding about why we play from the back, when and how.( for me we don’t do it fast enough but that is the level the players are at) I’ve also seen Gordon ( too slow of thought with the ball at his feet) absolutely arrow passes wide to the halfway line. We are missing nearly certain starters…near hysteria on here.

I read somewhere Commons was right & Brendan was wrong . Never have I read so much nonsense in the one article .
We are getting towards the stage that we could lose one of our best ever managers , not because he has been head hunted to a club with much more money to spend or waste but because we have morons who don’t appreciate what we have . Brendan has said that he will leave whenever fans tell him it’s time to go.
Unfortunately the loud mouths on thr stands & the simple minds who post on forums do so to see their post & the silent majority sit back & allow Brendan to continue doing his wonderful job . One domestic defeat in 74 isn’t necessary a disaster .
I would love to know how any of us fans know what side of dressing room our players sit on . Funny stupid me , I thought the kit man put out everyone’s kit & so determined where they sat

The difference in the two half’s last night was quite stark as Griff did make a real impact when he came on.
The reaction of the other players after he scored his goal was also quite revealing in that full of exuberance and support for Griff.
I do think we will bring in a couple of players before the window is out, that may be hope speaking over reality but there is usually a flurry of activity over the last day or two of the window when players finally make their decision where they are going to end up.
There is no arguing that BR has done exceptionally well on the domestic front but that is to be accepted when you look at the opposition, it’s not exactly top drawer in Scotland!
It’s blatantly obvious now that we have become one dimensional in our approach to games and that makes us easier to play against, the Hearts and sevco games were simply awful and we ended up playing for the draw against sevco simply because we ran out of fight and spirit!
A few weeks off in the sun to recharge the batteries doesn’t appear to have had the desired effect although it’s early day’s.
Brown, Ntcham and Griffiths always give 100% as does Tierney, they should be first names on every team sheet but oh how we are missing the creativity of Rogic and Roberts.
Haste ye back.

Toutenay,

Yes, it was a game of two halves. BR may have given them a rocket as well at half time, so improvement may not be just down to the arrival of Griff. IMHO, Edouard is not an out an out striker. He has a creative side to his game and usually likes to exercise that rather than attempt to score directly. For me, he is an enigma. I do not know if he is worth the money to us. He would not be a direct replacement for Dembele. However, in the second half, he played behind the striker, a role that suited him better.

I agree that teams are playing better against us this season because we are predictable. The worrying thing, for me, is that they are not any better. It is our performances that have dipped.

Whether players come in or not, I still think we shall win the league comfortably. The cup is another matter.

Well today’s dairy is a masterpiece of pure speculation mixed with a strong splash or hearsay and topped off with a dash of pessimism. We seem to keep speculating on just about everything from the worst possible case scenario. Now some of our bold posters here are going after the manager! Astonishing. The reason – they would do something different from him and he gets a bit pissed odd with the MSM every now and then. There is no blind faith here more a belief that an experienced manager knows what he’s doing and what is is trying to achieve. It’s a six year plan I remember and this is year two. Get a grip here. I suppose we can always have Delia back? Ilir Lenny? He never gets pissed off right? I think we have the best manager we’ve had since Big Jock working in a very different football world.
