Celtic Diary Tuesday January 23: Falling Out Of Love

Before we go on to make some stuff up about whats going down on the right side of town, there’s a couple of things I need to mention.

Thats right, make stuff up , cos thats Etims, the home of invention.

I should have been a rapper, but this ditty just got crapper.

One or two of you have noticed that the comments you make are often filed away to be “moderated 2. This is simply down to wordpress, and although you may feel you are being victimised, and admittedly it may seem like that, it really is nothing to do with us.

for some reason, some stuff seems to just stick, though one answer is to submit a short post and then go for the longer ones after that is “approved “.

Apart from that, I’ll try to keep an eye on any build up, but that isn’t always possible.

One or two of you may also have noticed that the diary yesterday claimed that Celtic would play Partick on Wednesday night, when in fact it’s Tuesday. This appears to be a deliberate ploy by the SPFL and Celtic to discredit me, by moving the game forward twenty four hours to make me look ill informed on the one hand, but to help my CV attain the credibility required for a job in the mainstream Scottish sports media.

Speaking of which, they really have turned on Stewart Regan this week, after Michael O’Neill turned down the Scotland job.

Regan had apparently put a lot of time and effort into securing the Northern Ireland manager to take the reins at the national side, but as he’s no bloody good at what he does, it was always destined to fail. And anyway, Malky Mackay, as we said at the time, is an SFA man and a shoo in for the job.

The media are blaming Regan, and even hinting that he’s not very good at his job.

We hear that they are also warning the captain of the Titanic to keep an eye out for icebergs.

Regan has done nothing in the eight years he’s been SFA chief. He commands a large salary for effectively doing nothing.

In fact, apart from his shennanigans helping Rangers when they went into liquidation , and the new club when they rose from the ashes, he’s done the square root of fuck all, in fact, one might argue he’s on the point of ruining the SFA.

Certainly he is drawing , and has drawn, an inflated salary -over a quarter of a million pounds a year-for no return.

The Record, finally finding its voice, said in its sports editorial today..

He is the head of an organisation that has failed to qualify for four successive finals on the bounce on his watch since he arrived at Hampden in July 2010.

Regan binned Craig Levein and Gordon Strachan for those failures, while he continued to call the shots. And still does.

With his track record, is it any wonder O’Neill said ‘no’?

And while he remains in situ, which top manager is going to say ‘yes’?

If they really want to turn the screw, they should look at a comparison of the money in the SFA’s account before Regan got here, and what it is now. and then compare it with, say, the Welsh, or the Northern Irish accounts.

Clearly Regan is going to be allowed to get away with hios 2011-12 antics, for now, anyway, so how about simply asking him to justify his wage, and show us what we are getting for our money ?

For once, the Record is correct, who, in their right mind would work with Regan ?

BBC Sport Scotland

@BBCSportScot
Alex McLeish is keen on a second crack at managing Scotland,
Alex McLeish is keen on managing anyone, as we have seen on previous diaries.

The very least the media  can do is haul Regan  out from under his desk and ask him a few questions. Ask him to show us how he would apply for the  job he already has, listing his abilities and achievements.

Back at the ranch, and it appears we may be on the point of spotting why there are a few mumblings and a grumblings around the club.

Brendan Rodgers’s outburst in front of a bemused press last week hinted at one or two problems, and his assistant Chris Davies has elaborated a wee bit..

It’s Moussa Dembele, he wants away… his heads gone, and the rest of his body is intent on catching up.

“I think time has gone on, and obviously there has been interest in him.

“It’s a feeling now that, of course he’s our player and we’re happy for him to be here – and we know what he can do.

“But there is also an acceptance that maybe Moussa feels it is the right time for him to move on.

“And when a player feels that way, then, there is not an awful lot of point in stopping them – unless you really have to. So that’s kind of how it’s evolved.

“I don’t think Moussa is desperate to leave. The situation is where it is.

“But nothing has actually happened yet, it’s been speculation.

“Here we are with nine or ten days to go and there’s been no formal bid. So we can only take it like that – and possibly stop focusing on that situation so much.”

We know that Dembele was bought to sell on. Its clearly time to do that.

We’ll survive, no one can blame the club for selling him for a huge profit. That was the plan all along.

And anyway, I’m quite sure there is no one on our board who would want to be seen to be associated with anyone who is purely interested in lining their own pockets, say at the expense of the general public.

Or the sick, or the poor , or the disabled…or workers rights, the health service and care for the elderly and infirm.

Like at Theresa May’s burns supper, where the guest list shouldn’t surprise anyone…

Image result for ian bankier celtic

I’d like to be serving the drinks for that one. If you boil urine and add it to a pot of tea or coffee it becomes tasteless…so they wouldn’t notice that for once I’d be giving the piss as opposed to taking it.

Leigh Griffiths has recently been reported as being less than happy at Celtic. If thats because Dembele is known to want out, and still getting game time, he has every right to be miffed.

The second half of the season is shaping up to be a little less exciting than it should have been.

And it could get worse…

Jon Flanagan, the girlfriend beating full back from Liverpool is being released from his contract, and Celtic are rumoured to be interested, just as soon as his community service is done.

From the Guardian….last Wednesday…

Liverpool footballer Jon Flanagan sentenced for assault

Player handed down 12-month community order for attacking his girlfriend, Rachael Wall

Liverpool footballer Jon Flanagan has been sentenced to a 12-month community order for assaulting his girlfriend on a night out.

Flanagan, 25, pleaded guilty earlier this month to the common assault by beating of Rachael Wall, with whom he had been in a relationship for 18 months. Liverpool crown court heard on Wednesday that the couple were now back together.

The court was shown CCTV footage, taken from outside the Il Forno restaurant, of the “prolonged attack”, which took place on Duke Street in Liverpool city centre at about 3.20am on Friday 22 December.

It showed Flanagan hitting Wall before pushing her against a wall twice and then kicking her. The district judge, Wendy Lloyd, declined a request by Wall that the footage not be played in open court.

Lloyd sentenced Flanagan on Wednesday to the community order, which will include 15 rehabilitation activity days, 40 hours of unpaid work, £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Speaking to the footballer, she said: “You are, of course, a young man of previous good character and therefore it’s undoubtedly sad that you have brought yourself here by your behaviour.”

Lloyd said the attack was not just a single act. “It was a matter of this lady going to the floor twice and you used your foot on her on one occasion,” she said. “The lady was seen to have injuries but, of course, she said she does not attribute those injuries to you.”

There was more, but I’ve read enough.

Brendan, seriously, don’t even think about bringing him anywhere near Celtic.

Lets just get back to work, and put three more points on the board in tonights Glasgow derby…

Yesterday we had this… well, some of you did. another wordpress mystery..

What do you get when you fall in love,
A guy with a pin to burst your bubble,

I’ll never fall in love again,
I’ll never fall in love again.
“Regan the square root of fuck all” you know Ralphy, that is how we should all address him in future, “The square root of fuck all”.
So the young fella wants away, he I think is who Brendan alluded to when he said “some players here think that they are C.L. players” so you once again are right and that a parting of the ways is for the best, shame really, but yes. I personally like young Edouard and think that he has great potential and perhaps more of a team player and that’s what counts “The team”.

Yes Mike I’m very proud of my Irish roots, have travelled on an Irish passport since 19799. Quite possible my great, great grandparents went to school with Eammon Kerrins aka Bro. Walfrid. Ona slightly different note Mike, I had an old friend from Stirling, a guy by the name of John Cooney; he left Stirling about 1965 and settled in Doncaster, S. Yorks with his wife Esther and two young daughters; he was a colliery electrician and left Scotland when they started to close the Scottish coalfields. He was a Labour councillor for some time in the Stirling area. John died over 20 years ago but his wife is still alive and while a big age is/was still active. Johns parents hailed from Achill Isle. Co Mayo; John and his family were great Celts. Did you know of them Mike? H.H.

How is it possible to sustain weekly wages for some clubs of £500,000
pounds PER WEEK and to pay agents £15 MILLION POUNDS, unbelievably that money is on an escalator an escalator hurtling towards oblivion.
The richest clubs in Europe are up to their necks in a sea of debt, surely some kind of brake is required to put an end to unrealistic wages and commissions. We will never be able to gain some kind of parity in competition with the madness of some clubs and the level of debt that they are prepared to incur in search of fitba. success.
You just have to look across the water to see an example of monetary madness that sunk the shithole based in Govan.

The problem for both Celtic and Dembele is that his present form is as likely to be his real form as last years. The boy seems to be viewing his dream of the EPL as disappearing and Big pete and the Tories are talking themselves into accepting anything over 12 million. This deal seems unusual in that everyone might lose. Celtic will not get their 20 million for the hotel, the bottom EPl club that picks him might be getting a flash in the pan 15 million quid dud and Moussa might be back in the Championship next season. All parties deeply disappointed. Then Brendan will be rolled out to soft soap the Celtic support that it was a fantastic deal for the club. 8 months ago they were talking 30 million. But you can bet your bottom dollar that it won’t be done until the 31st to ensure none of the cash is spent on a replacement. Where does that leave Grif? Back in the team but knowing he is an after thought. Hardly a vote of confidence.

Any other stories of Celtic selling someone for big money that worked out this badly? I’m thinking Victor Wanyama and Virgil as well as Fraser Forster. We got good money from theme and even more money from two of them when they were sold on again. Both are happily plying their trade with top clubs in the EPL and Fraser is stiii at Southampton. Seems to be the opposite of what you expect John.

But Mike Celtic have raked in quite a few EPL sized transfer fees in recent years. A season ticket is as expensive at celtic as most EPL clubs. The Tv money makes the difference but no one is asking Celtic to spend like Bournemouth even. Just buy a couple of decent players they have the money. This we can’t spend 50 million so we will spend nothing is a stupid argument.

Reply to  john

John, You will get no argument’s from me about the cash that we have brought in over the last 18 months, but if you look at the accounts prior to that, we as a club were still slightly in debt despite 2/3 players leaving. B.R. and his staff cost a lot of money and most of our current first team players have had large wage increases to fend of EPL interest. I totally agree that we will have accrued monies recently and that we will be able to afford a couple of better players and I want Celtic to spend that bringing them in. But we are still within the window, its not closed yet and nobody can say that we will or will not bring them in just now. The time to criticise is if the window is closed and nothing serious has happened within the window timescale opening.
I repeat, I want just like everyone else to see new players coming in, the only way I see things differently is that I want the club to remain safe, because of the environment we are in. If buying and building a museum and a hotel is good for the club then so be it, but not at the expense of the team.

We are a football team not the Forte’s hotel chain, but a bit of diversity is a good thing if it brings in money to the club
we must always ensure that it stays SAFE. However first and foremost it is the TEAM that brings in the supporters and that is the clubs biggest asset they should always be the FIRST priority, keep them happy and the club will always thrive.

Does anyone think for a minute that Celtic will fund a hotel project out of operating cash or free cash flow? The club will borrow the money for this capital project and pay back over 20-30 years. I’m sure they have worked out their sums and the hotel will be expected to put a lot more back into Celtic than it cost (otherwise they would give it a miss)thus improving the finances and ultimately the ability to sign and pay better players. This is very different from overspending then needing an overdraft to cover it ( a slippery slope as we all know )

Mike

Reply to  broxburnbhoy

Of course this is a “Capital Project” and funds will be borrowed to cover its cost and of course this should be a diversion which will make the club better and more secure with an added revenue stream. The outstanding debt will be paid and the club will be in its healthiest ever position. But still supporters want to see the team itself improve it can only be improved by a better quality player, they have all paid handsomely to see better players, they are the biggest of all revenue streams, its their money that they want to see improve the team, we are after all a football club, if the club fails to add better players and fails to explain why, then supporters have the right to criticise the board.

Totally agree Mike. However, we need to invest if we are to be considered to be a European standard club. At the moment we are hanging onto this staus by a finger nail. I would rather , if they are available, sign a couple of players now and bed them in for the CL qualifiers in July/August. I don’t think we can afford not to spend to improve our chances of the CL. It is a risk but it simply must be done. Going into these with the same defence will, in my opinion, almost guarantee we go out. It is getting harder all the time. Clubs like Astana and Qarabag are spending as much if not more then we are. It is not all about money I know that. but I don’t know of any Celtic supporter who does not think we need an upgrade from Boyata and Jozo.

John, We are not that far apart in our desire to see that Celtic achieve success on the park, I like you want to see a couple of good quality signings, so that we can at least continue to qualify for the C.L. and yes I would like to see a couple of better, much better centre backs, for me young Ajer has the POTENTIAL to be a top class player and I am hoping that Compper can enhance the teams performance once he is up to speed.

About tonight’s game, Thistle often give us a hard time at Firhill but we always seem to scrape through in the end. Tonight probably won’t be much different and I’d really make do with any kind of win but hopefully we’ll get to see a spirited performance all-round and some cohesion and efficiency in defence (I hope that’s not asking for too much!) I’ll go for a 2-0 away win with a Sinclair double. Leigh Griffiths could well feature this evening.

I’ll try the short post followed by a longer one if I can think of something to say.

It is important that Celtic forge ahead with the hotel plan, even if it means the team suffers in the short term. Why? Because the hotel is long term thinking and is the best option so far to an alternative revenue stream. Without moving to another league and without a bust in the TV miney down south, Celtic will continue to struggle.

Bankier the wankier siding with the enemies of the working class. The Tories have given us foodbanks, a depleted NHS(England), a dismantling of the welfare state, just to name a couple of things. He shouldn’t be anywhere near CFC.

Jimmybee,

no disrespect to yourself but they’re a shower of shite, and I’m sure the majority on here would agree. Remember the SC final when Thatcher was presenting the trophy she received a torrent of abuse and rightly so. Their political ideology is destructive and does nothing for normal every day working people. I could detail hundreds of reasons why they’re cunts but don’t have the time. FFS, we do collections for NE foodbank at CP. Why do these collections happen? All due to the disgusting austerity programme they’ve introduced for many years which affect so many people.

What or who next then to get the chop, you do know what Nazi’s were when they decided that the Jewish people were to be expelled from Germany, they were racists.
Who decides who or what are to be expelled from Celtic.
A club open to all and to everybody, no matter race, politics
or religion. We know what they are and we do not need to be reminded of what they do, but the day that we exclude anyone then that day will be my last day supporting Celtic F.C.
Jimmybee Celtic supporter and fuckin caption winner, he is completely right. 100%.

Mike,
So your happy to accept people on our board, who are comfortable with the poorest people in society being pushed to the brink.

How do you think Brother Walfrid would feel about Tory policies?
Tories are fucking scum and are NOT welcome at Celtic Park!

Mike,

it’s about how the Tories are waging a class war against us, nothing to do with the above you mention. I have for 20 years plus campaigned against successive Tory govts, racism and fascism and have a deep knowledge and understanding of what they’re all about. It’s many of the people who attend CP and their families who are affected by their neo liberal right wing policies not fforgetting their scapegoating of muslims etc I know which side I’m on when it’s about what benefits us all rather than a pit of vipers as they are. Just my opinion.

Who mentioned the board, you said Bankier out, no Tories at Celtic park. I never said anything about the board, I said, well read it before trying to put words into my mouth. Nobody’s arguing in favour or for the Tories, I am saying that when you start barring anyone of any race, religion or political persuasion from attending games at Celtic park then count me out. I do not need reminding of what they are or who they are or what there policies are and what effect those policies have on our population, I like Jimmybee am only stating the long held club view that no one, no person of race, religion, gender, or political views should be barred from Celtic park the club, our club is open to all and if that ever changes then count me out. When you start that pish then who goes out next and who decides who goes out next.

You do know that Godwin was a farmer don’t you and farmers read a lot about history when they sit oan their arses waiting for the crops to turn. Even more they like to argue especially about politics, race, religion, everything really.

And BTW just an observation but the last labour Government finished in 2010, that’s if you believe that Gordon Brown was in the Labour party. 8 years ago, it may have felt like 20 but it was only in May 2010 that he left us right up to our necks in shit, and after he bailed out the corrupt banks. And the working people that you and I support are still paying for it.

No problem mate, believe me we are not far apart in our opinions but I cannot stick the thought of anyone getting barred from Celtic park for whatever reasons, except criminality. We are and have always been a divergent people and if we cannot express our opinions then where would we be, somewhere I and you would not like to be. Best Wishes.

I thought for a minute I was reading the “Dave Spart” column in Private Eye – priceless. I may have had dinner with a Tory once – yet if failed to make me a Tory. If you think the Tories are facists then you have yet to meet a facist. I dislike their policies intensely and many working class people in England vote for them – beats me and it’s true, the same working class vote that delivered Brexit.

Then Ian can pay at the gate like the rest.

Just a thought:
If Bankier is sippin` cups of tea with the likes of Sir Angus Grossart,then you have to ask yourself;

Was he in the know that rangers(IL) were registering their player with the SFA fraudulently?

You know how these rich like a good gloat.

More often than not, Thistle give us a tough time at Firhill but we always seem to scrape through. Tonight probably won’t be much different so I’d settle for any kind of win and hopefully a spirited performance with a bit of cohesion at the back (less of the tippy tappy shite from Gordon and Boyata) and more cutting edge up front. I’ll go for a 2-0 away win with a Scotty Sinclair brace. I hope Griff starts.

Weered thank you for “ guider” haven’t heard that term in 40+ years, we all had them. Pram wheels and planks, but enough of Monti, only kiddin ! We can’t criticise the club for not makings signings until the window is over, don’t worry about that being too late, why would we know who could fit into the team. Managing a senior professional club is probably harder than we imagine.
