Celtic Diary Monday December 11: We Are Where We Wanted to Be

There was no diary over the weekend.

Not that anyone noticed.

We had our christmas due to all of us being in the same country for once, and it all went really well until the board games and drinking bit…

I had just won my second consecutive game of Frustration, as the green tokens, when i was ordered to become the yellow ones, as it was close to orange and would put me off.

Bloody did as well.

Thats when we all remembered why we don’t live in the same country any more.

Forced to play on christmas Day, ( in this part of Staffordshire, anyway, )Celtic chucked away a two goal lead to Hibernian at Easter road-despite what you may have read in the paper..

Half time at Celtic Park and it remains goalless. Follow the second half live in our blog

Goalless at half time, but then Scott Sinclair reminded us that form is temporary and class is permanent. His two goals put Celtic in the driving seat, but Hibs didn’t give up.

Neil Lennons side fought like tigers and secured a share of the points, and frankly could well have won the game during a frantic last quarter of an hour that had us on the edge of our seats.

Much has been made of Celtic’s inadequacies, but little has been mentioned of the fact that Hibernian have now scored six of the twelve goals Celtic have conceded domestically this season.

They deserved their draw, and whilst you could argue Celtic should have won, sometimes you have to give credit elsewhere rather than criticism at home.

There is a growing undercurrent of dissastisfaction at the way the team are playing just now.

But lets consider where we are.

The first trophy is in the bag, as they say.

The club are clear at the top of the league, still unbeaten domestically since Brendan rodgers took over.

Today, we will find out who Celtic will face in the europa League knockout stages.

Celtic have played twelve games to get to this stage, and qualified ahead of last seasons quarter finalists Anderlecht, which we knew deep down was the most realistic thing we could expect from a group containing two of europes most powerful sides in Bayern Munich and Paris St Germain.

All of this was done with a side that had suffered several injuries to key players, and several others forced to play out of position.

We are where we wanted to be, and its been a bit of a slog. Players are tired, supporters are edgy, and its all getting a bit tedious.

There’s a winter break coming up, and frankly we all need it.

There’s a lot been achieved this season, especially as now domestically every game is a cup final, with every team wanting to be the one the beats the invincibles.

In europe there is a lot to look forward to as Celtic are the only side from the qualifiers to make the europa League. Indeed, the only side to start in pot four and make third place.

There’s still a lot of football to be played before the break, so maybe kets leave the moaning to one side for a minute, and be thankful we still have a lot to look forward to.

It’s important that we give the players some encouragement. They read the papers, and its difficult at the best of times to find anything positive to read there, so as we do in the ground,we need to close ranks on the web.

With rumours of “invoice financing ” at Ibrox, which is where a company-or club-sells a debt to a finance firm for less than its worth, the signs are that the tribute act are about to go the same way as the original band, and as a result, the media, who have failed en masse to draw attention to the ongoing custerfuck at Ibrox, will seek deflection.

There’s an example of this in todays Evening times, which actually promied to be an interesting piece , yet it collapsed into a collection of how much money Celtic lost on a player..

FORGOTTEN Celtic flop Derk Boerrigter has blamed the Parkhead medical staff for ending his career by failing to diagnose his broken ankle after finally breaking his silence on his Hoops nightmare.

The former Ajax winger cost Celtic a staggering £3 million in July 2013, before he was quietly released from his four-year contract in 2016.

His spell in Glasgow was an expensive error after making just eight starts, which worked out at an incredible £587,500 per start for his transfer fee and hefty £12,000-per-week wages.

However, Boerrigter – who never kicked a ball again after his exit from Celtic – has put the blame for his calamitous spell in Scotland squarely at the door of the club.

Boerrigter said: “Ajax loaned Isaac Cuenca from Barcelona and put me out of their team. He cost Ajax about £100,000 per game so had to play.

“I was furious and decided I would join another club. My career at Celtic didn’t work out because of silly injuries.

“Those injury problems actually started at Ajax, but at Celtic things went badly wrong.

“Celtic then stuffed me full of painkillers, so I could keep playing.

“Then it turned out that it was ultimately a bone fracture in my ankle.
I really blame Celtic’s medical staff for that. It was a real shame what happened.”

( there’s the story…but lets concentrate on some figures, because then the hordes can have a laugh…)

An injury on Boerrigter’s Hoops debut set the tone for his stay. He made just five starts in the league, one in the League Cup and two in Europe.

Celtic invested £4.7 million on the wide man, for which they got one goal in return – against Aberdeen in 2013.

Of his eight starts, Boerrigter played for a total of 512 minutes in the league for Celtic.

That meant it cost Celtic £9,180 for every minute he played in the Premiership.

I await the backlash for this…

Even though any right thinking man agrees with the sentiment in both statements, there is little doubt the media have failed to condemn it simply because they can’t find an angle yet.

No doubt it will come though.

So, before you have a moan about a failure to score a dozen past Hamilton on Wednesday, just remember where we are, who we are, and how we got here.

And lets stick together, like we did in the bad times…

Europa League ? It’ll be one of these..

If its Sporting we’ll have to wear that shocking pink outfit, which is another reason why New Balance should be allowed to pay us to wear their strips, but their input should finish right there.

We can dress it up in whatever way we like but the team is nowhere near as good as they were last season and have actually gone backwards. Arrogant and complacent. Europe was a disaster and we only qualified because we drew the worst team in Pot three and played them at their lowest point in over 20 years. they are having their worst season in a generation. If we had played them 2 weeks later than we did we probably would not have qualified for the EL. We paly absolutely no one in the league yet have dropped points in 5 games out of 16. This is not a blip. It is a sewries of blips which is called a pattern. Yesterdays pulsating match was not ‘end to end exciting football’ it was amateurish nonsense, error strewn shite. and we are constantly entertained by the on-going omnishambles at Ibrox, a club who only won three in a row for the first time in a year at the weekend, a club who cannot organise anything and have been without a manager for nearly two months yet are closer to us now than they have been in their 5 year history and are actually only 5 points behind us. I am not saying this is a crisis, it is not! However, the laziness and complacency that has set in indicate that we are all waiting until it is before anything is done about it. Celtics continued humiliation and disgrace in Europe is to blame. The players know they are second rate and the confidence has drained from them. God knows what will happen when they get beat for the first time. Losing a two goal lead to an amateur outfit like Hibs is a bad sign. Other clubs will believe that they can get something from us. Get new faces in during January and not some dumplings from St Mirren dn Dundee. Unless it is a 10-0 humiliation in the EL weare after. That will do wonders for the domestic campaign. Sign some footballers for Christ sake Celtic.

Hibs: “Amateur outfit”
St Mirren/Dundee: “Dumplings”
Anderlecht: “Lowest point in over 20 years”

I think those statements are more arrogant than the current set of players and management running the team. We have no right to win any single game and without these ‘dumplings’, there is no league!

To label Hibs, one of the in-form and more attractive teams just now, as an ‘amateur outfit’ shows a complete lack of footballing knowledge.

Anderlecht had a fantastic season last season and their current position is not ‘the worse in 20 years’, I would predict they will finish at least 2nd place and that would be higher than a few seasons during that time, including just a few years back.

There is only so far superior fitness (not applicable in Europe) and a larger squad will take you when you are playing twice as many games as your competition.

I believe we should have invested in another central defender pre-season, but even if we spent 20 million on that player, we would still be sitting in the exact same position as we are now!

I will leave you with a comment from a forum on the dark side a few weeks back, I think of this type of stupid comment every time I hear people shouting about spending more money….

“These guys came in and told us they would supply interest free loans to get the club back to where we belong, but they never told us they wanted the money back”

Well said, Some of the stuff I’ve read about our recent performances has been doing my head in, yes it’s been poor recently but ffs some people need a reality check, last season was a one off and a lot of our younger fans seem to think it’s going to be like that every season which is just crazy but as someone who grew up during the the *Rangers domination in the late 80s / 90s I’m just enjoying the ride .

Not a bad draw, could have been better and could have been worse. I hope the coppers will be well-prepared to deal with a bit of the old ultra-violence when the Ruskies come over as Zenit ‘supporters’ caused some real havoc when they visited San Sebastian a few days ago before and during their game against Real Sociedad.

Thought we were very complacent at 2-0 yesterday which was the big disappointment. We aren’t playing as well as we were last season but I fully expected this as last season was an anomaly. It will be a long time before we go through a season and only drop 8 points again.

Zenit, possibly the most racist club in Europe, both fans and club management. There are tougher teams we could have drawn in footballing terms. Like Sevco, their fans never get punished for the things they shout and sing.

Complacent, Celtic ad an attacking force 10/10, our defence 0/10. Both the Hibees goals came from poor defending.
The problem with the team John, is Simo, Boyata and Gordon, it affects the rest of the players, BR must rep,ace them or the chaos at the back will continue
Zenit a good draw as they are on their winter break.

Based on what i’ve seen from us in Europe this season, i think Zenit will comfortably get by us.
Unless we sign one or two central defenders in January, i expect to lose heavily over the two legs.
Anyone who thinks we will get through past Zenit is scary as TicToc appearing on university challenge, for Cambridge.

Domestically it’s worrying the amount of coverage the unbeaten run is getting, unbeaenruns ae great but we need to remind some folk WINNING is what matters.
Ralph is right when he say’s we need the winter break, we need to charge batteries.

Don’t normally like being downbeat but the Anderlecht game at home was deflating, we must do better, especially at home.

Let’s add some real quality in January and go for it in the second half of the season.

Can anybody confirm when their season starts again? We keep moaning about playing vital qualifiers in July/August when we’re not up to speed, but we can’t have it both ways; Zenit will not be at their best for this tie, but anybody watching that Anderlecht game will know we still have it all to do. Let’s see what the winter break does for us, who we recruit in January, and what level we can reach come early February. It’s far too early to say whether we have a good draw or not, best wait and see where we’re at when it arrives. There’s no show in town except the domestic one for a while so let’s start stamping our domination all over everyone else, starting Wednesday.
Anybody else think KT could do with a break? We have Miller, Hayes and McGregor could do a job there against Hamilton I’d have thought. A tired and poor clearance led to the Anderlect goal on Tuesday and as nippy as he is, the Hibs winger was breezing past him at times yesterday. It must be mentally and physically tough for such a young man and perhaps he needs a bit of protection just now.

Don’t know why people slag off an unbeaten team
that’s won 4 trophies in a row. That is not supporting Celtic, just being a smart arse. Champions League group stage is simply above our pay grade. Nearly 29 years ago the Bkessed one signed 3 x £6m players in Sutton, Hartson and Lennon and he had Henrik Larson. WGS had to sort those finances out, especially the wages which are probably more significant than the transfer fee. The team is showing the effects of 32 games and very short close ( recovery) season. Zenit play their last game tonight until their mid season break ends early February.
We are 5 points ahead in the League with a game in hand, anyone remember the 1990s? I think the unbeaten run is probably a hindrance too, the focus all becomes on holding on to it

Yes,the 1990s when the Bank of Scotland gave the Huns a massive overdraft to try to destroy Celtic.Celtic’s debt was trivial compared to the cheats but that crooked bank called in Celtic’s debt. Are we meant to be happy now because the cheats died, the bank went bust and Celtic are struggling but we’ve not to mention it or you’re a smart arse?….

Macca

No one is slagging the team. Most are concerned that the current squad is not good enough to make any impact in Europe. Criticism is that the board is happy with domestic dominance and resultant profit and does not see value in investment to see progress in Europe.

Some people need to understand that there’s a difference betwen raising real concerns over certain positions in the side, and slagging the team, a big difference.
My concerns are this shrugging of the shoulders mentality to dropped points, it’s getting to the stage where it doesn’t matter if we win as long as we don’t get beat, stll unbeaten has replaced being pissed off at not winning.
We are throwing a fair amount of points away, needlessly.
We need to get back to WINNING, then the record continues alongside that, but winning comes first.
Look at the Shaw equaliser, Simunovic can’t adjust his feet & get the ball away tae fuck, weak defending.
Boyata is the weakest link since Ambrose.

Where is Sviatchenko? I mean where the fuck is he?

Maybe it’s time to blood a young central defender from the development squad.

So Zenit? There was never going to be an easy opponent, so bring it on. Before that we need to start really performing at Paradise to get back the WINNING mentality as we’ll need it against them.
If Brendan STOPS trying to force big Craig to be a ‘footballing’ ‘keeper, we’ve got one of the very best shot-stoppers. Decent defending will put an end to his stupid rushes of blood, and he MUST start to command his box. Unless Jozo has a big change of heart and attitude, we need THREE CBs as Boyata will always be a threat to US and Erik seems surplus to requirements. Let’s see what January brings, and hope TF it’s some very good signings.

I too am beginning to think our unbeaten streak is becoming an albatross around our neck. If we are afraid of losing, then we are starting to be afraid of winning as well. Hibs was a good example. A confident team should see out a 2-0 lead for victory, especially in the 70th minute. Upstart Sevco recently made a big fuss about its first 3 in a row this season and we mock them but I too would like 3 in a row—victories. We have six games before the January break.
home to Hamilton
away to Hearts
home to Partick
home to Aberdeen
away to Dundee
home to Sevco
It would be good to win all of these and we can do so. It would give us a better cushion.
January window:
we need to look at right back, two central defenders, and backup for Tierney at left back.
I think our midfield is strong and our 3 strikers are enough in our system 4-2-3-1 which Brendan prefers.
Systems: teams are on to us and we need to vary our setup sometimes. I like a 3-5-2 and maybe we could get Griff and Dembele playing together?
We also need to gel other players who can take the strain off our usual starting 11.
Hayes, Devries, Kouassi, Benyu, Henderson, Sviatchenko, Ralston when fit. We need to see what they can do. We still have Allen and Christie out on loan.
I think we have the core of a good team which does need bolstered in defence.
Gordon is still a fine shot stopper but his distribution is a bit scary.
Here are best 11 players, regardless of fitness and they should now go on a six game winning streak, beginning Wed. night. We can concentrate solely on domestic stuff until the break.
Gordon
Lustig/Simunovic/Boyata/Tierney
Brown/Ntcham
Forrest/Rogic/Sinclair
Griffiths
The usual subs.
We can get our defence sorted in the window.
I also fear to say that our quality of play will pick up once we finally lose but let’s not do that until after the break! Maybe then we won’t settle for draws anymore.
I am proud to support Celtic. It is a big part of my life.
I am very grateful to Brendan and his team for giving us pride.
We will never forget the darker times in our (recent) history.
We have a right to offer constructive criticism to our club in all aspects.
We need to improve in Europe; I think we will.
Although we may be underdog to Zenit, we have also proven that we can sometimes show up at that level. Unlike some, I can’t tell you what Zenit will do to us (or not)because I don’t know everything.
Zenit’s attitude to black players is a bit like Rangers was to Catholics so we need to defend Boyata, Dembele, Ntcham, Sinclair, Edouard etc. against Zenit fans bile and racism. We know FIFA has done nothing (think Sevco and the Famine song)
We also need to be on guard as a club when Zenit fans come to town. They may try drag us down.
Celtic is a family. We quarrel like a family and disagree like a family. I also think most of you would have my back and old and unfit as I now am, I would give my all to have yours.
Away for my tea and med. I can dispense my own meds myself so fuck nurse Ratched, I don’t need help from fascists!

Embrace what we have and do not be afraid.
68 games unbeaten is not a noose around our neck it is a british record which shows no signs of stopping no matter how hard they try.
We should have won yesterday chances missed and yes defensive errors but i wouldnt change this feeling i have right now following the bhoys.
I rememeber the dark days too well.
Being beaten by Clyde Falkirk Raith Rovers Ross County Motherwell Inverness Caley etc etc.
Its a brilliant time to be a tim.

Decoy pretty much agree, let us focus on the domestic league and cup. I think we can take Zenit, obviously I would like the squad strengthened although the best thing would be a return to form of Sinclair, Armstrong, maybe Lustig, Gordon and Boyata as well. What about De Vries against Hamilton? My only worry about strengthening in January, you rarely get a finished article then. Wouldn’t It be brilliant if Paddy could be back mid February or is that asking too much?

OK Monti I like Gordon, a brilliant signing especially when you think Ged was training st Ibrox, and you are right he won’t
need a rest but a shake up in the defence different/ better communication, maybe? I have defended Boyata but even in my eyes he has been off the pace lately as has Lustig, even Tierney is playing like a more average player.

Tierney is a a young lad who prob just needs a wee rest. Boyata = Ambrose and needs to be replaced. Lustig has been a great servant and a real fans favourite for all the right reasons. Sadly he is now where Izzy was and it’s time to wish him well and say goodbye.

De Vries had a horrible start to his Celtic career he is a much better keeper than people on here give him credit for.
He has played well when called upon this season.
He won’t let us down if called upon .
The players are playing ok without being at their best.
They will come good. We played well on Sunday far better than the result shows more of the same and we will take care of business no problem.

We have played a lot of games but we have, or should have, the squad to deal with it. We have an all time british record, each game makes that record harder to topple, this should be a huge motivator for us, not a source of pressure or nerves.
