Celtic Diary Thursday November 30: 66…But Only Just

The tiresome but effective tactics employed by Motherwell last night almost ended Celtic’s unbeaten domestic run.

When it comes to European away games, it wouldn’t do Celtic any harm to adapt a similar style, but without the kicking, pushing and whinging.

The strength, the organisation and the committment was admirable, but frankly Motherwell aren;t good enough players to avoid the nastier side of defending.

As a result, they conceded the only penalty awarded to Celtic in the league this season, taking their tally to half of all Celtic spot kicks this season. Given the previous reluctance to award penalties by referees, that says more than anyone would care to admit.

Mikael Lustigs fine finish had given Motherwell the lead with just twelve minutes to go, but Celtic didn’t panic and got their reward when a neat little one two, a trip and a push, sent Calum MacGregor to the ground and referee Willie Collum pointed immediately to the spot.

Having looked at the incident, it was a penalty, and a nifty execution of the old self defence move where you trip and push someone for extra momentum.

Of course, Motherwell had their moan about it…

 “Another controversial penalty “? .

Do paramedics have to attend the scene for it to be a stonewaller ?

Michael Stewart, who used to play for Hearts, I think, tweeted..

Have just seen the penalty in the Motherwell v Celtic game….

OMG😳🙀

What a horrific decision! Motherwell will be absolutely raging

If I was the Motherwell manager, I would be raging.

Not at the decision, but at the defender who committed the offence when MacGregor was actually running away from goal.

Stupid and unnecessary …but what do I know ?

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers did his best to hide a grin..

“They have been angry with a lot since Sunday, they seem to be angry with everything,”

“Again, their keeper made a great save, we should have finished it, the ball rebounds out, the player makes an attempt to get the ball, Callum steps in front, gets his body there and he knocks him over.

“And of you look at the referees decision, he is in the perfect position to give it so yes, I thought it was a penalty.

“Of course when you are the opposition, you probably think it’s not.

“The team showed their spirit, we know we can score and we should have been more clinical.

“I am really proud of the team tonight.”

Scott Sinclair, in particular , showed reason to be proud of him.

Having suffered the usual racist abuse that is becoming sickeningly commonplace in the best wee country in the world, he would have really enjoyed his goal..

Not as much as me, but probably not that far off.

Anyway, the result means that the run is now 66 undefeated, and next up, at Celtic Park on Saturday, are…

Motherwell.

This time, however, the Lanrkshire side will be showing signs of fatigue, along with that deep rooted sense of injustice that comes as part of the psyche of the less technically gifted player at a small club.

A couple of sendings off and a five, six or seven goal victory to the Celts, which will destroy Motherwells confidence and see the beginning of a run that will see them finsih in the bottom six.

Anyone see the game last night ?

It was only available on Celtic TV…so we’ve put together a highlights package for those who wish to have a look..

The production comapny behind what is now becoming an embarrassment are Sports Media, of Livingston.

I’ve had a look at their website, and its a pisser.

Er, yup.

Maybe you could ring them and ask them exactly what they mean by “specialise “.

Where Celtic are concerned, they boast..

Celtic FC

Celtic FC have chosen SportsMedia to provide both online website and video hosting powered by Videobloc (our Video Platform CMS) and our Secure Cloud Network Infrastructure.

So secure, in fact, that nobody can actually see it.

Many moons ago, I asked Peter Lawwell about putting Celtic TV back on the Sky platform, where it would sit along with other club channels, and be more accessible. The cost, he claimed, at around £1m , was prohibitive.

The difference, though, would be that supporters would get what they pay for, which is a picture and some sound.

To do things cheaply is often to have to do things twice.

The service provided by Celtic TV is unacceptable, the work of amateurs, and its time to change it.

There is a massive market out there for all things Celtic, particularly content which is not interpreted by the mainstream media, and its clear that a massive opportunity to connect with the support is being missed.

So, with no Celtic TV stream to either steal or pay for, it was down to the mainstream media to provide information.

Incredibly, BBC Scotland, who are banned for Ibrox due to one of those rare instances when they criticised their pals. chose to cover the “rangers ” Aberdeen game, by watching it on a Sky TV feed in their studio.

Perhaps the result, aided by man of the match Andrew Dallas, had them all excited. “rangers ” won 3-0, an astonishing outcome, but then you remember that McInnes is high on the Ibrox clubs wanted list, presumably because he fits the criteria of being incapable to field a winning team at Ibrox.

When you’ve finished ringing Sports Media, you might want to have a pop at the BBC.

I think the number is 0141 666 1690.

( don’t ring it, I’d hate to think that some wee old woman gets a lot of phone calls from angry tims. )

While I’m having a moan, did you see this ?

Champions League

Its the new Champions League ball.

then there’s this..

Football fans face disruption as UEFA announce plans for 6pm kick-offs in Champions League from 2018

  • Champions League fixtures currently kick-off at 19.45 (GMT)
  • Matches from 2018 will have two separate start times of 18.00 and 20.00 (GMT)
  • UEFA believe the move will allow fans more opportunities to watch matches

That would be the fans who watch on television, of course. Not the ones who make their way along the highways , byways and airways of Europe to actually attend the game and provide the spectacle that is so popular.

Nah, the official UEFa line is “fuck them “.

Leek Town are looking more and more attractive as the weks go by.

Tomorrow night they’ve got a question and answer session with Chris Sutton, which I and a few others from the Lennon CSC will be attending.

I’ll be asking how much their season books are.

Football is football at places like that, and not ruined by greed and malice like the “professional ” game.

And if I recall correctly, there’s a cheap bar ..

Meanwhile today, Scotlands newest club, “rangers “.hold their AGM, which will be a test for all the spin doctors pretending to be journalists.

Its in the Clyde Auditorium, and that alone shows just how far they’ve come on their journey.

Of course, nothing said or done today matters a jot, as Lord Bannatyne puts the final touches to his statement which will end Dave Kings amusing and entertaining time in Scottish football.

The anxiety is growing as even with terrible refereeing decisions and a cramped schedule, celtic still keep rolling along.

A good night with nearest challengers losing and same challengers will be right up for revenge come sunday at home to Dave Kings Army, which is nice.

Celtic now nearing the end of a grueling yet prosperous run and after Tuesdays BIG game, players can relax a little and then ease into the New Year with main pressure lifted and cue a few squad changes with fringe players getting a run out.

We cab then refresh personell come January, especially at the back..try and tempt a good centre back and would be nice to see cover used so KT and Lustig get a wee rest now and again too

One thing i do want to see from Celtic is a lot more aggression to our side, not at the expense of good football, just a reputation for liking a fight….and winning that fight.

We could maybe start here with getting Anthony Ralston into regular contention with Mikael, and inter-changeing at RB. I really like Mikael Lustig and he’s always been a great player for us; however, we need quality cover and AR can provide this. The Bhoy’s got a real presence and steel too.
Craig Gordon is a fantastic shot-stopper as he’s proven time and time again, but he also has poor aspects. He doesn’t (cannot?) ‘boss’ his area, and can be extremely lax with his ‘play-from-the-back’ role that Brendan requires. De Fries had a torrid start as he and Chris Gamboa launched their Celtic careers with a fucking shambles vs Barca. I’ve seen him play a bit too, and Sunderland showed he’s a far better ‘keeper than his debut appeared to show.
In central defence, we need a clear-out. Erik, a decent player who lacks pace, was almost punted in the summer; he’ll go. Simunovec, our best CD by some distance, has a mental problem; he thinks life can be better after Celtic. He’s GOT to be punted. Boyata has skills all over the place, but sometimes distributes the ball in a similar manner. He makes me nervy and will always flatter to deceive; he’s guaranteed to let us down. Must go.
Nir Bitton is a decent footballer, but NOT a CD; maybe just above our defence using his terrific passing skills to help open up 10-behind-the-ba’ type outfits. Big Kris Ajer is a work in progress but, I believe, a really good prospect, maybe at CD. So, IMHO, we need a top ‘keeper to take over and see how Craig and Dorus respond to that. We need a minimum of TWO central defenders of quality. We’ll need to spend fairly big here, but we need to make our club strong from the pitch and not listen to strong pitches from the tory bastards who try to tell us that £18 million is okay to gamble, and it is a fucking gamble, on a hotel? WTF
Many on here believe in god; that’s fine. Please ask god if Brother Walfrid was right in trying to look after the poor and if buying a fucking hotel (or another football team anywhere) is in keeping with our roots. I’ll pre-empt the god thing and say that the hotel/other club pish is just that; PISH.
Our family laid to rest a younger family member today; the tragedy our young nephew became was typical of the results of the excesses of stinking, fucking, out-of-control capitalism; don’t let ANY cunt ANYWHERE try to tell me this is not true.
On a happier note, on a difficult day, after the Requiem Mass and later interment we repaired to a really beautiful setting for the wake. We talked and laughed and cried as we recounted memories; then we had a wee anthem. You’ll Never Walk Alone was sung loud and proud by our mixed family and friends. Chris, a really promising footballer at one time, was a Liverpool fan (like his Dad) but they both have soft spots for the Celtic too. Other family members, like me, are really just Tims. I’m rambling……..sorry.
Today was really a celebration of all things good in my wee nephew, and they were many. RIP, Christopher, from Uncle Vinnie and, I hope, ETims too.
HH
PS, met a lovely couple who were sporting a beautiful Celtic/Liverpool scarf at the wake; Chris’s Mum introduced me and, not surprisingly, we got on really well. Turned out the ghirl was sitting around the same area I was (near the GB) in the 2002-03 campaign vs Liverpool at Paradise when Gerry Marsden sang our shared anthem. Sorry for going on..
Goodnight, all.

Fondly remember the Roy Keane/Patrick Vieira ‘ spat’ in the tunnel, pre kick off, when Vieira was trying to intimidate Gary Neville.
Keane,a true captain, leader & hard cunt tells Vieira, pointing to the pitch ” out there, we’ll see out there “!
That is what is required of a few Celtic players on Saturday, in the tunnel before kick off, Broony, Ntcham, Simunovic…fucking tell their players ” oot there ” or ” what are you fucking looking at cunt “?
Get it on, get it started & start it in the tunnel.

We are Celtic…..let them fucking know it!

Monti;I never heard any story of Patrick Viera running into the toilets and not coming out to play the match after that encounter with that arsehole Keane, true thug and arsehole on the pitch if ever there was one and funnily enough I’ve always regarded Viera as a gentleman on and off the pitch and who always gave his everything for his country, which is more than can be said for the “Traitor in Japan”. Just to be clear, i didn’t agree with everything Roy Keane did, said or whatever, what i do know is that for over a decade, Roy was a world class player, the epitome of a leader & captain.
His outbursts and timing could be wrong but i knew where he was coming from, he wanted to WIN!

Well Monti the only thing that I can say in response to your comment about Keane(TTiJ) AND Viera is that imho every referee in England was shit scared of Keane and Sir Bollox Ferguson and Manchester United got away with more shit than Glasgow Rangers ever did. Different opinions Monti, I’ve always regarded Viera as a bit of a hero of mine and Arsenal as my favourite EPL football team after Leeds United left the EPL. You seem to have missed my comment about the “Traitor in Japan, maybe a touch of amnesia. But when I see that scowling animal sat upon the bench of my county’s international football team at the side of the Blessed Martin O’Neil I think it is one of the Seven Deadly Sins crying to Heaven for Justice apart from failing to see anything that he brings to the team. Hail. Hail.

Gerald,
I didn’t miss the Japan bit out, i included that in the bit about not agreeing with everything he did/timing.
Arsenal are shit by the way & will always be in the shadow of Tottenham, the biggest club in London.
I don’t have a second side but growing up in the 70’s & 80’s as a kid, Liverpool were the best, then Fergie arrived at Utd.
I admire a lot about these clubs but in reality they mean nothing to me.
As for Vieira being a hero of yours…why not a great player, but he isn’t in the same class as Keane!

If anyone has any doubt about Scottish fitba. then last night’s coverage and the games that were played shows it for what it is.
Coverage.. BBC Scotland, Two games played, but one game gets about 80%
coverage, the other 20% if that, Sky well haven’t had it for years, wouldn’t buy it period. The rest Ralph sums it up, I think that many would subscribe to a better more improved t.v. coverage, but only if season tickets are sold out, the support at the games take priority.
The coverage will always be biased in this country, it will never change, to many support the dark side for it to change.
As for the game at Ipox well the ref. was a deciding factor in that, aided it has to be said by McInness who had his players baffled by his set up, if the players were confused then no wonder they never turned up. Celtic came up against AGAIN a team mainly constructed of English knuckle draggers, plenty of big hard tackling balloons whose only relationship with fitba. was of the kicking haggis and how far you can kick it, it is pure shite to call that pro. fitba. I hope we kick the English haggis’s to timbucktwo on Saturday. All these games at funny times and based on Sky’s time is an insult to fitba. supporters and its gonny get worse, meanwhile the players must be knackered, bruised and battered but their fighting spirit continues along with the slump.

When a team has 18 fouls, five yellow cards in one game and gives away a penalty in same game, that would sound pretty much on the money. A logical conclusion to a very dirty team’s approach. I forgot when does a team get fined for a certain number of yellow cards in one game? I think they call it failure to control your players. The mystery here is that they all stayed on the field. Time to open these fake footballers up for a thrashing at Celtic park with Sinclair scoring a couple. the BBC – ban them from Celtic Park with an accompanying statement, clearly outlining the reasons and again confirming the new club status of “rangers”

To be fair I can see Motherwell and the SMSM’s point to a degree. I mean if it was deemed foul play every time a Celtic player was pushed, tripped, kicked, punched, chibbed or garotted there’d be a penalty every game. Wouldn’t there? Or am I just being naive?

Ralph, first time commenting.

As someone who lives on the other side of the pond, I wholeheartedly agree that CelticTV is woefully deficient. £1M is chump change relative to the revenue they could be bringing in if they got their issues sorted out. I really believe that if Celtic made a concerted effort to attract an international audience they could build up enough recurring subscribers to bring in £100M+ in revenue every year just from CelticTV. That would take several years to build it up to that level of course, but I believe that’s very realistic given the prices they charge to international subscribers. But to do that, they’ll need to get the feed reliable and they’ll need to improve the picture quality to 4K to be on par with what is available on broadcast and other streaming services. The feed dropping to single digit FPS or dropping out entirely is completely unacceptable in 2017, and they need to drop their current, amateurish service provider if they can’t get even the basics figured out!

Good to hear your thoughts Benjamin, I always try to encourage new posters. 😉

We remember Setanta the Irish sports T.V. company they who operated in the U.K. America, Canada, Australia and Asia. I thought that they went into administration, (just the company, not the club), and disappeared, so it has been tried but personally I would have thought that it was possible, but an awful lot of marketing would establish if that were the case and then a tie up with another major company perhaps, based on time differences.

Thanks for your thoughts Mike.

For my 2¢, I think Celtic should go one of two ways overseas.
(1) partner with a company that specializes in streaming sports content and does it well. The best in the industry is now a subsidiary of Disney’s ESPN division that was originally the in-house streaming service of MLB (Major League Baseball). They have since signed on other partners, notably the NHL, and their offering is 2nd to none. Fast connections, 4K quality, multiple camera angles that the viewer can select (or 4 camera angles at once on PC!), apps on every major platform including PC, iOS, Android, Roku, etc. it’s a great service, and the price points for their services are typically less than what CelticTV charges, and they make a killing at those prices.
(2) if they don’t want to go that route, signing up with a new-media company to do the streaming isn’t a bad option either, particularly if that media company can target some advertising and expand the addressable market and get additional subscribers. Google, Facebook, and Netflix would fit the bill here. Facebook in particular is interesting because they are rumored to be putting a bid together for the EPL rights when they come up for renewal again. They know A LOT about their users and can target one to one advertising and capture revenue streams that traditional media companies can only dream about. They have a lot of money to throw around and are stepping up their investments in this space. But notably, they also have the ability to find audiences who aren’t existing subscribers but might be inclined to tune into Celtic games. America in particular has a HUGE Irish diaspora as well as a large and growing population that is paying attention to football (soccer) for the first time. Most people have adopted EPL teams to support, but for many the bond is not strong and one that developed almost by happenstance because the EPL for many years was the only league shown on a regular basis in this country. I suspect a lot of those people, tens of thousands at minimum, would support Celtic and sign up for CelticTV if the club made any effort at all at trying to connect with those people. Particularly those who have Irish or Scottish ancestory. And companies like Facebook and Google know EXACTLY who those people are and who is likely to respond to advertising and other marketing efforts.

My opinion on this is that Celtic can’t invest too much in this space provided they’re being smart and strategic about it. If they go about it the right way, they will have investment payback periods measured in weeks or months, and very high rates of return overall.

For my part, I wasn’t even aware that CelticTV existed until a trip to Scotland a few years ago where I was lucky enough to take in a match at Celtic Park. My opinion is that CelticTV is much improved in the last couple years, but it is still run like an amateur operation with embarrassing little marketing behind it.

I totally agree, I live in Boston and I have Celtic TV and it is as you describe. The alternative is to go to The Banshee in Dorchester at 8.00am and end up blootered by noon! wait a minute….

I think they could do a deal with a real TV company or internet company on a pat per view 4K format. I would be willing to pay for that. Even if it covered Boston New York and Chicago, it would make money.

Benjamin has an excellent point and we know that there is a huge World Wide audience of Celtic supporters who would willingly pay a set sum to watch Celtic play weekly, given the number of games that we play. He clearly knows a lot about the subject and a lot of our overseas support would welcome a more professional viewing experience, see Pensionerbhoys reply below. Certainly we could do with better streaming and the commentary to is amateurish. I have read about facebook showing an interest in the EPL and others, if we could be added to the streaming channels or facebook the club would get a healthy return for its investment and the W.W. support would gain a better coverage benefitting both perhaps even leading to more football kit sales. The board should be made aware of the possibilities, so Benjamin why don’t you contact J.P, Taylor the supporters liason officer who might give you a response to your obvious knowledge of this subject.
Well done. H.H.

Annual prayer meeting allegedly claim God is a Hun

Thought Gollum a joke last night, time after time if they did not get the ball they got the man.
Amazed he gave the penalty, and yet again the biased media insinuate Callum died, they should be banned from the stadium.
Loved the question to Ling at their AGM
Did you go to St Margaret Mary’s or non denominational school.
What a sad shower of Biggoted, stupid, stupid huns

I tried to get penalty statistics. In the League this year, Dundee and Sevco have had six penalties. Hamilton five. St. Johnstone 4, Aberdeen 3. Hibs and Motherwell 2. Ross County, Hearts and Celtic have had one each. Last night was our first league penalty!? Motherwell have had twice as many penalties as Celtic! So much for ‘bias.’
Killie and Partick haven’t had any.

IF those penalty stats are true then Kilmarnock and Partick Thistle would have the greatest reason to feel aggrieved

You’re never going to get a penalty if you never stray out your own half but.

Ralph,

All I will say is I now feel vindicated given I have been complaining about our tv joke since you were in nappies – had a few uppers this morning and my visions are somewhat erratic or erotic. I am not sure what category you in nappies might fall into. I do not get pictures as I refuse to pay any of the external tv bigots for even the best quality viewing. So, I am left with the sole option of sound, the sound of the CTV wireless (just for nostalgia’s sake). Now, I have a choice of listening to the one-sided commentaries on BBC Scotland – would you wish that on even a bear? – or the non-commentaries of CTV. Why “non”? Well, one can only presume said commentators are all trained at the BBC as they only seem to be able to comment on what is happening on a screen. Out of an hour and a half’s football, the listener is lucky to get half an hour of actual descriptions of play. The rest of the time is worse than the pundit crap one gets on Match of the Day that goes on for three times longer than the highlights themselves. No matter how knowledgeable Tom Boyd or Jim Craig etc. (last night it was the expertise of Murdo McLeod) may be, I thought I paid to hear what was happening on the pitch not a series of player or tactic critiques. I am heartily (my spelling of fucking for this impeccable site) sick of it but emailing the experts at Celtic TV is a waste of good typing time. They have more excuses than Dave King in a tax office. The sound commentary should be from a separate studio and aimed at listeners – you know, those people who only have ears and no pictures to watch. My problem is, I would rather put up with a juvenile product from CTV than an utterly one-sided tale from another broadcaster. I guess it just proves the Catholic ethic at Celtic when they are right into suffering in silence.

By the way, Ralph, calm down. I dislike people ranting about things and the Diary has been somewhat aggressive over the past week or so. One would think you were pissed off and not just pissed 🙂

Is the danish centre back the only player that gets called by his Christian name , or is it maybe you find his surname too difficult?
