Celtic Diary Thursday November 16: Scuttlebutts and Damp Squibs

The AGM took place yesterday.

Rays of enlightenment shone upon the support as the board patted each other on the back and hit out at those who dare to blacken the good name of Celtic.

Well, not hit out, sort of wave their arms about. In the general direction of “over there” .

Iain Bankier, the chairman, spoke out about the recent revelations that Dermot Desmond has another company that set up another company to minimalise his tax returns.

As a club we deeply resent being associated with the scuttlebutt that was the Panorama programme last week,”

“It has nothing to do with Celtic, nothing to do with the UK tax system – it had nothing to do anything. In fact it was one of the most boring programmes. If it didn’t have Celtic in the title I’d have switched off half way through. It had 15 minutes of a shopping centre. Boring stuff.”

Hardly hitting out. In fact, hardly even waving his arms about.

And scuttlebutt?

Definition of scuttlebutt

1a :a cask on shipboard to contain freshwater for a day’s use
b :a drinking fountain on a ship or at a naval or marine installation

First Known Use: circa 1805

Oddly enough, other words first used in 1805 include “billy goat” , “water supply ” and “love child ” , all of which could be used in connection to our cousins south of the river

And there’s a couple which apply to our board as well….”resign” and “expendable ”

Definition of resign

transitive verb
1:relegateconsignespecially :to give (oneself) over without resistance

  • resigned herself to her fate
2:to give up deliberately; especially :to renounce (something, such as a right or position) by a formal act
intransitive verb
1:to give up one’s office or position :quit
2:to accept something as inevitable :submit
We could say, perhaps that we, as supporters , are being asked to resign ourselves to the fact that the board of Celtic are resigned to the fact that the SFA have no intention of dealing with the issues surrounding Resolution 12, which , in turn, would lead to calls asking the board to resign.
Which leads us to the other word from 1805.
Expendable.

Definition of expendable

:that may be expended: such as
a :normally used up or consumed in service

  • expendable supplies like pencils and paper
b :more easily or economically replaced than rescued, salvaged, or protected
Waving the accounts in the air and pointing to our manager isn’t going to remove the bitter taste that has been left by the SFA antics surrounding the issue.
A few lines about a tv programme, which is merely indicative of an agenda at the BBC rather than a reporter getting a bit carried away with a non story isn’t going to satisfy a customer base who take any attack on the good name of Celtic as an attack on themselves.
Neither is accepting that the Resolution 12 issue is being looked at by the compliance officer of the SFA, who hasn’t reported back yet.
Real pressure needs to be applied by those in charge at Celtic, not just a few lines that will be reported, but hidden behind what appears to have been the main talking point at the meeting.
Someone, presumably a plant by the board to generate headlines, asked why Celtic use bus company Parks of Hamilton, and accused the club of “subsidising the club across the water “
Lawwell replied;
“We want to be above all that,” “And joining up using Parks of Hamilton to subsidising that other club across the water is a bit of a stretch. On a practical note it is very difficult to find an alternative and I don’t accept we are subsiding Rangers.”
Its hard to disagree.
There are far more effective ways of subsidising the club across the water, such as signing tv contracts which guarantee four games against them a year, charging Celtic fans fifty quid to go to Ibrox and allowing them to cheat their way into the champions League and then waiting for the organisation that allowed that to look into it and see if anyone did anything wrong.
Which is called self questioning, coincidentally another word which first appeared in 1805.
To the observer, the AGM revealed very little. It simply confirmed that everyone who isn’t happy should be and the board are struggling to figure out why.
Though it wasn’t quite their “Ratner ” moment, had Stewart Regan handed over the draft of what he wants the compliance officer to say on Resolution 12 before the AGM, it would have been a very rough ride for Lawwell et al, and whilst I understand fully that he is just as pissed off about the SFA as we are, the pressure on the SFA must be kept as high as possible.
And turned up even higher every fortnight or so.
Other wise, the board will become expendable.
The draft Regan will put forward to the compliance officer ?
Whilst certain facts have emerged which do cast doubt on the actions of officials during the period in question, there is no doubt that those concerned acted in good faith and could not, without the benefit of facts which later became known, have made any decision other than that which was made.
However, systems have been put in place to ensure that any future misunderstandings or mistakes cannot be repeated, and its now time to accept that lessons have been learned and we can all look forward to the future with a renewed confidence in those who work tirelessly for the good of our game.
Which will be released shortly after the League Cup final, as long as Celtic win.
At which point, that’ll be that for me, and I’ll be away to watch Leek Town.
Which is just up the road and as far as I know participates in a league where no one gets preferential treatment.
Unless, of course, the phrase “Celtic board hits out ” actually means they have hit out….

Since Fergus left I can’t remember the board sticking up for the fans/club in any way. They won’t stick up for their own club and that’s just piss poor.

Agree about Celtic waiting for compliance officer reporting against his bosses, total joke.Have shares, sentimental reasons, would never attend AGM.So called’s fans pay over the odds to come to Parkhead so they pay into our coffers. Our fans have the choice, just don’t pay or if you do,why? It’s a five year new club and they’re totally crap.Anyway, another glamour game,at lunchtime,in the Baltic region,on Saturday. No wonder you hardly see any players smiling their way through games these days.Anyway,KTF,unless you want to come on here and slate the Catholic Church. What has happened to Our support?

The question of using Park’s of Hamilton, to supply our team bus may not be the most pressing question asked of the board, but for me it still has merit.
Surely puting one thin dime into the coffers of a Hun director is plain wrong.
Lawwell said ” we would need two buses, if we had our own “….well fucking get two then!

I don’t know how much a luxury team bus costs never mind two, but surely Celtic football club, as a matter of pride, should own it’s own team bus?
Why not have a couple of friendlies against Real Madrid & Inter Milan?
Would this cover the cost of a luxury coach or two?
Could the board not involve the support, the Green brigade and our support base throughout the world & raise the costs?

Remember your famous quote Peter, ” We try to be world class in everything we do “?
We don’t even have our own team bus for fuck sake?
We want fucking nothing, NOTHING, to do with any form of Hun vermin….that includes getting our team bus off a fucking Hun!

“World class in everything we do”? Pish!

God bless the Pope & the Catholic Church!

I’m already supporting AFC Fylde. I had 2 Celtic main stand season books for donkeys years.
I gave my shareholding to the Res12 boys near 5 years ago, we are being played and I’m not for being mugged any more. If my club cannot call out fraud and blatant cheating then it breaks my heart but……… not in my name.

Very sad to hear the passing of Jim Brogan I did see him play a number of times and recall games against Feyanord and Ajax when Cruyff got no change out of him what so ever, brilliant full back in the attacking CELTIC tradition.
RIP Jim Brogan.

Peter Lawwell/Board = Celtic compromised.

I’ve never had the inclination, nor stomach as it happens, to attend the AGM. The thought of watching a dick sharing oligarch patting each other on their fannies for how much they are getting away with it makes me cringe with incredulousness.

The dick in the analogy doesn’t even bother to appear, which makes them all dickless.

A dickless mob of self aggrandizing and smug fuckin lickspittles of no consequence, raking it for all they can whilst occasionally fawning to the crowd with a disingenuous nod of crooning familiarity that would make a comic singer puke.

Why the reward, for waiting on the main man (with the dick) to turn up occasionally and fix things, should be so high is beyond me?

I only hope they don’t fuck it this time with Brendan, as they have with all previous managers since and including MON. Every endeavour to maximise our status with Brendan should be afforded with stern determination and a cohesive approach with the football management team.

This without showing any disregard to the football management team, us fans as well as their own office, from an over estimated sense of self worth.

Celtic since Fergus has evolved and we are all well aware Celtic is a business. However, we should never accept anything other than what is absolute in its operations, as we all know the worth of our beloved club, as we live and breath it every day.

5TB,
Excellent stuff, like i have always said, Celtic’s strength should always be gauged on the standard & quality of player that emerges from the dressing room, out the tunnel & onto the pitch.

Celtic is the support & the team…….the board better be aware of that!

The problem that imagined letter from Regan has is it ignores a known. That is something we know that they know we know. (Rumsfeld).

It’s not that the licence was granted on the basis of a lie making it fraud, it’s what the SFA did thereafter to cover a known up (the Sherriff Officers calling in Aug 2011) right through to 2016 after they got a copy of the UEFA Traverso letter and there are a number of knowns in that period.

More will emerge but in one respect you are right. Nothing will be done until supporters of all clubs unite on the matter and force their Boards to pay attention to the SFA Compliance Officer investigation. Hibs fans are asking questions today and the more knowns that reach the public via social media the harder it is for the way out suggested in the imaginary letter to happen.

In short keep up the pressure on SFA.

The difference between “ the” Board, there are actually two Boards, and us as fans blogging on this site is we know they exist. Fergus established Celtic as a sound business unlike the Kelly corner shop. Do we need a bus not really, buy a vehicle, drive it two miles and the depreciation has set in already.
I see “Rangers” as deserving of our charity as I would any other collection of down and outs.I would go further we should have charity tins collecting for them at Celtic Park, it could go to helping them refurbish their stadium, of course we could specify how it is to be be spent, I would go with a chapel for Our Lady, most of their players would appreciate that.

I agree with you on the bus thing Monti , not a matter of “do we need a bus” more a matter of portraying the correct corporate image .
As for the “Parks” part of it , why would we have any link to the shambles at Ibrox . Parks have been front and centre over there , keeping the lights on ; therefore high profile at Govan at the moment.
That alone would persuade me to disassociate Celtic from that name/brand.
On a separate note , I see South Stand Rebuild was “kicked down the road” though noted that it will need addressing ; I’d have thought it would have been given priority over the hotel though haven’t seen projected figures for hotel revenue versus extra st income.

jpm,
Heard that it would take £40,000,000 to rebuild the main stand.
I don’t see how that could be when it was only £60m to do the rest of the stadium?

Monti ,

yes , I understand they guestimated 30-40 mil yesterday .
The hotel is circa 20 mil , I believe .
Could be one of the reasons they went for hotel first ; though to my mind doing so puts the South Stand even further down the road , and they did admit that it (South Stand) will need addressed .
Could be that some outside investment may be looked at.
Pity PhilMac’s UAE investment after the GBs Palestinian fundraise didn’t pan out 🙂

I was surprised that Celtic do not have a bus for each of their teams to be honest. Although not a major deal I don’t think we should be hiring a coach from the directors of a rival clubs firm. The Celtic board are not interested in the opinions of the support and are desperate for this Res 12 thing to go away. They want a return to the old days, only this time they will be happy to win 3 of every 5 titles and give them the other 2. Back to the Old firm guarantees maximum season book sales. I would not be surprised if Celtic had loaned them money to keep them afloat! I think I remember Jim Brogan rolling around on the track at Celtic Park fighting with Derek Parlane? Can anyone confirm this or did I just make it up? he used to own the ‘Sportsmans Bar’ in Coatbridge if I remember correctly? Sad to hear of his passing just a couple of weeks after the great Paul Wilson.

Loving what Brendan and the players are achieving just now and it is amazing to watch it unfold. However, the more the board talks, the more I notice the smoke and mirrors we slag the huns off for.

The bit about the Europa League expanding being great for Scottish Football and will provide stronger domestic opposition seems like a call for a strong Rangers to me.

Also the complete lack of pressure on the SFA regarding the cheating years is telling. Not demanding timelines, scope etc is a basic error and giving the SFA a license to do as they please AGAIN. Allowing the SFA to investigate itself is an insult to all football fans, not just ours. You only have to look as far back as the riots following the Hibs win in the SC final to see they will sweep it all under the carpet.

The board had the chance to answer some pertinent questions yesterday, but skipped round them as usual by focusing attention on Brendan and the team’s achievements.

Really getting fed up with it all. It seems like we are happy to go along with the charade that is Scottish Football and welcome the new club as Rangers with all cheated titles etc attached.

Ok Melvin let’s say the Celtic Board wade in like a bull in a China Shop and go up against the SFA and start a war against the SFA SPFL and a good number of the other clubs. How do you think that would end? UEFA and FIFA always back their own associations and the other Scottish clubs are unreliable at best. What if they simply expelled Celtic as a result or sanctioned us through UEFA. While chastising the Board for failure to “go it alone” I think you miss the basic premise of who actually hold the official power. Celtic to fight the world – who wins that fight? I think they are addressing the various topics we care about and they have to do it diplomatically.

Broxburnbhoy

Interesting how the Board are always getting abuse on here and yet when it comes to Celtic shareholders voting they seem to be getting the masssive numbers. DD with a nearly 98% vote to remain. Seems some here are in the 2% minority of disgruntled at nearly everything.

They don’t just get abuse on here.Plenty at the games and in clubs/pubs.They are buying into the continuation nonsense to make money, they don’t scream from the rooftops about deletion of titles and cups and think Scottish football will be happy to see Celtic hoover up the honours.Don’t think so.If you don’t fight now Celtic, beware of that light at the end of the tunnel……

What are YOU going to do about it ? As a ST holderI have the power to at least focus more attention on the state of it by not going. Small groups and individuals make no difference but I said it before and will say it again…mass boycott , particularly of a final or at Ibrox. Been through all that this would do media wise even possibly throughout other countries. Knowing agreement as the GB unfurl another statement isn’t going to cut it . Let’s force them to do something…our money…our club. Did you honestly think they would take a stand yesterday…? A Tory even addressing supporters is abhorrent.

SR,

That powder has been drying so long – at least 4 years – it will be appearing as a new geological discovery on a Time Team special before long. We should at least be seeing some touch paper at the ready. Instead it looks like heads are buried in a heap of dry puff powder hoping a strong wind will blow it into our eyes so that we no longer see the corruption and agree to “move on”. And along with this we will be asked to swallow another hike on ticket prices for next season. Who says corruption and compliance do not pay???

H H

Celtic supporters do a lot of moaning about this but as Steve says are unwilling to take any meaningful action ie withholding cash. They scramble for tickets for Ibrox and Hampden and then moan that there is no change. of course there is no change, we continue to support the status quo. And the board will do nothing about this because they too want a return to the status quo. losing the odd title to new rangers is acceptable to them as it keeps the season books getting flogged. An early exit from Europe is a disaster if the Sevco games are not on, it keeps the supporters paying. I don’t understand why Celtic supporters are surprised at the stance (non stance) of the Tory board. They have written one strongly worded letter in 5 years. Remember the sainted DD called then ‘a fantastic club with a fantastic history’ while welcoming them back to the top division. Good Celtic man DD

Ralph,

The feelings you express today is the essence of my frustration. However, if I am honest, I am basing my annoyance on little or no facts. Then again, that may be the very source of my frustration in that very little other than platitudes and sound-bites emanate from the Celtic Board. I do not ask for details of any plan of action, either current or after the the report from the SFA “compliant” (not a spelling error) officer, but a commitment to respond in the best interest of Celtic and its supporters. I am not convinced that keeping everything close to the chest serves the common interest. Fans need hope and encouragement. It is not acceptable to treat them as unintelligent followers instead of well-informed fellow supporters. I ask, not that you divulge what you will do, but that you confirm you will do it.

I suggest anyone who is convinced the board pay full attention and give complete respect to fans, should read the latest report from The Celtic Trust.

Just doing a bit of digging into the costs of a luxury team coach/bus.
Manchester utd have their own luxury team bus, costing £400,000.
Is that figure really out of Celtic’s reach?
Surely not.
Like i say, one friendly match against a major side and there’s our brand new shiny team bus, with the remainder going to charity.

Now that would be ” world class ” Mr.Lawwell.

No 1 priority for the January transfer window is to secure our team for next year. Hopefully we will win the league again, but half our defense will be in Russia helping Sweden,Belgium, Denmark and Costa Rica to win the World Cup along with Tom Rogic.
We have been lucky, superb, magic or hanging by a baw hair to qualify for the last 2 seasons of the big champions league.
We have the cash and spend it in the new year. There is no sense waiting for the summer sales, we need the players to blend in now.
Don’t bother with new players who are at the World Cup, they will be too expensive, but could be a bonus if we get to the group stages.
