Celtic Diary Monday October 30: Our Own Sense Of Entitlement

Alright, maybe just mine.

We documented yesterday how our support is becoming a little too self righteous and maybe not recognising the achievements of the current side for what they really are.

Off the field we can be just as bad.

Alright, maybe just me.

But I’m fairly sure that one or two of you are guilty as well.

I’m going to cite two examples..

First, your friend and mine, Joey Barton..

We join the conversation midway through…someone asked the mercurial midfielder if he’d rejoin “rangers ”

Joey Barton Retweeted S A Y E R S Y

I’m currently banned and haven’t trained for a few months. I’d be a little ring rusty. Still be best player up there though.

I think we can safely say that reply was a little tongue in cheek.

To which he received this reply..

Replying to

I see your still on the glue ya wankstain did u get the kids the new celtic tops

Then the one that caused all the fuss.

Joey Barton Retweeted Michael Johnstone

Careful with the kids and Celtic in the same sentence Michael. Don’t want folk getting the wrong idea again.

Barton was , quite ferociously, accused of making jokes about child abuse.

Now look again.

He refers to “the kids “….which is quite normal when referring to ones own.

And says he doesn’t want folk getting the wrong idea again.

Remember when he bought them Celtic tops ?

After facing a shitstorm of abuse, he tried to explain himself, but there seemed little point. The jury had made its mind up and he was a condemned man.

I don’t want my kids to get accused of supporting Celtic and your tweet is about them getting run over. Celtic fan?

I’m going to go out on a limb here.

Barton wasn’t making jokes about child abuse, but it seems a few of us wanted to see it that way.

I’m no fan of his, but i am a fan of fair play.

Which brings me to my second example, that of the Scottish Football supporters Association.

We are also be delighted to announce a partnership with our friends who will share much of our research findings

Twopointone are the offshoot of Scope, a failed pay per view venture which has a couple of editors who happily go along with perpetuating the same club myth.

Hence the overreaction…not least from me..

Replying to   and

If they don’t get the basics right then it destroys any credibility in anything else they say. Disappointed.

By hitching their wagon to the Twopointone horse, it appeared at first that any credibilty built up by the SFSA in its early days had all but vanished overnight.

But had it ?

I’m fairly clear on what has happened in Scottish football over the last five or six years.

I’ve seen evidence of collusion, evidence of corruption and evidence of complete incompetence.

So have most of you.

As a result of our own certainty in what we proclaim, we can sometimes be tainted with the bampot brush, and viewed as too partisan to be taken seriously, which in itself is somewhat ironic given the agenda behind the mainstream media.

But the SFSA have to be seen as impartial in order to retain and build credibility.

That, on reflection , is why they must take in all views from all angles, in order to present the conclusions that all fans of all clubs must consider.

So, firstly, to anyone from the SFSA reading this, I’m sorry, I jumped to conclusions, and that was wrong, because it puts me in a similar mindset to those who I’ve been arguing with for the last few years, those who are so closed minded that they will not accept another point of view.

The way to clean up our game, now so toxic that only bookmakers are prepared to invest in it, bookmakers who cannot find an outlet anywhere else but Scotland due to a conflict of interest, is to be united.

To put to every supporter all the evidence, all the arguments and all the conclusions so that they can decide if we are right, if our game has been destroyed by those serving only their own interests.

Then, together, we can really move forward, happily trampling over the ashes of what had gone before.

Elsewhere, its Hallowe’en tomorrow night, and Celtic will host Bayern Munich in a game which will have the old heebie jeebies running riot to an extent that if Freddy Kreuger, Michael Myers and Terry hurlock turned up at your door it would serve only to calm you down a bit.

We’ll cover that tomorrow.

I’m off to Bradford shortly to see a man about a dog.

But first, I’d like to extend my congratulations to a man who has , well, become a man ?

College ain’t what it used to be.

Yesterday we asked for your thoughts on this image..

The Betfred Cup Final between Celtic and Motherwell on November 26 will become a tribute to Phil O’Donnell.

The Hampden showcase comes a month before the tenth anniversary of the players death at Fir Park while playing against Dundee United.

In 1994 Celtic paid Motherwell £1.75m to sign the midfielder with that fee still a record for the Fir Park club.

According to a report in The Sun both clubs have been approached about making the final a tribute to O’Donnell and instantly agreed.

Former team-mates Simon Donnelly, Jackie McNamara and Darren Jackson have helped set up and support a heart screening charity- Cardiac Risk in the Young- which will host a sportsman’s dinner on November 11.

O’Donnell is fondly remembered at Motherwel as the 18-year-old that scored in their 1991 Scottish Cup Final win over Dundee United, seven years later he was a key member of Wim Jansen’s squad that stopped the 10.

A wonderful gesture for a wonderful player.

RIP Phil

Great read Ralphy, You are an honest and open individual when you take your blinkers off, not just you of course….everyone, but when the evidence presents itself….constantly its fairly easy to make your mind up. For example…Puggy continues to win the caption contest, the evidence points to him being related to you in some way or perhaps he is an individual with the same humour as…you. The evidence points to the former, but knowing you I would completely rule that out, so it must be the latter. Besides you always proclaim your love for Voo Dude, that is a reasonable interpretation is it not?

Ryan Christie is having a wonderful season long loan at Aberdeen, again this weekend he scored another great goal and put in another first rate performance, you cannot but wonder that if he was playing on Saturday that he would have made that difference. He has been the sheep’s best player so far this season……by miles, having been called up to the Scotland squad, things are going great for Ryan. You get the feeling that when he comes back next season that he might be a first team pick, especially that Armstrong’s contract extension was only by another year., if Stuart goes then Ryan looks like his ready made replacement. Ah, a flock of young Scottish players coming through, the past for Celtic was magnificent in the main and the future is looking great.

Joey Barton is a fucking bell end who knew exactly what he was saying & what he was doing, a fucking complete arsehole of a man!
Hopefully his car breaks down on the Garngad, know a few guys from there who would love to give him a hand…cough.
On to last Saturday, There is no doubt that equalling a 100 year record is nothing short of remarkable, in fact it’s fucking quality.
However ( clears throat ) i don’t think that drawing with Kilmarnock at Celtic Park is fucking good enough, that’s three times we have drawn home games so far? We need to find the answers to teams defending deep, especially on the back of such an impressive display at Pittodrie, midweek.
For me Cetic need something a little different and freshness into the side, that freshness should come in the shape of Ryan Christie being recalled from loan, the guy has a lot to offer, this should be done in Green & Whyte of Celtic, not the red of sheep shaggers.
I don’t feel supporters being pissed off arawing home games equates to ‘self entitlement’, we are a winning club & want to fucking win, so when we don’t there will be natural disappointment.
Brendan & the players are a credit to our club & have delivered constantly since Brendan arrived, nothing but credit they deserve, let’s just sort out these fucking home draws.

Fuck Bayern Munich, Celtic WILL win on Halloween, i am convinced this will be our time, our night and our victory!

Monti Christie will have a key role for us next season the best way to prepare for that is to be a key player at Aberdeen NOW and continue to gain experience, with us he would be in and out of the team and would not develop as he is just now. When he come back next season he will be ready to be the player he can be having served his time up at the sheep

I’m no knocking your opinion but you’re talking shite!
No one will really know ow good Ryan can become until he get’s a regular chance at Celtic, we can only judge what we see from Ryan’s displays for Aberdeen & he is consistently good.
His goal at the weekend was top drawer, bring him back, fuck Mcinnes & Aberdeen!

I watched the Joshua Tamak fight at the weekend. Big massive powerhouse huffing and puffing and a wee gemme guy saying “Come on, come on..you aint so hard!”.

The big guy won out in the end but was clearly frustrated and a little confused at how such a physically reduced opponent could make life hard for him but commentators suggested at end of ths day, he won and it was a very good lesson for him to experience.

Was all a bit like Celtic these days and Saturdays showing is gonna happen in a few games this season.

Overall I’m thinking its pretty wise of Brendan and staff. Reward the stars with a rest after Aberdeen and before Tuesday, play the guys on the bench to keep them interested and play some youth when you can to inspire the kids as well as keep the bench folk on their toes.

Okay we didn’t win but lessons learnt by many and we still just jab jab jab our way out in front for now rather than a constant rain of knock out blows…those can wait till Europe campaign is over one way or another.

As for Ryan Christie..definitely deserves his chance on his Aberdeen form and an Armstrong exit likely. Not sure how his stats showed at Celtic of course but fingers crossed this season sees him ready and prepared for really battling for his place at Celtic in 2018

Desi,
I watched the Joshua fight as well, i wanted to boot that ref in the haw maws for stopping it, just let the fight go on ffs!
Has to be remembered Joshua didn’t train to fight Takam, so the extra weight Joshua put on was probably for extra power, not conjusive for going the distance tho.
Takam did well & the fight shouldn’t have been stopped.

Admin
Reply to  Monti

Aye, was a shame to end like that but bar a shock knockdown the ref was probably errirng on side of caution.

A Joshua fight against Tyson Fury will be like 2 normal folk in a phone box..they two will fill a normal size ring with nowhere to go. Joshua looked like he had been enjoying the celebrity too much and that was a good wee reality check.

Tamak with 12 days notice really confounded the expectations, was a very good watch, the blood spouting out the 2 eyelids would have filled one of Mikes big brandy glasses!

Christie has been the outstanding Aberdeen player since he went, he is still a boy. He could have made adifference on Saturday and should be recalled. Ntcham is not much better hen some of the squad and he cost 4mil, buying players is not the only solution, remember the Lions.
Saturday was poor but a few players protecting themselves for Munchen, Robets unlucky.

Last post lost – maybe doesn’t like the link but have a listen to John Hartson on Radio Scotland yesterday. He wipes the floor with the ‘Rangers’ resurgence myth and states he can’t mention the man who destroyed that club ‘for legal reasons.’ Big Bad John nails wee smelly Sevco. It’s a pity paid, trained journalists don’t have his mettle. Does a certain Scottish businessman have a super injunction out against mentioning his name alongside the death of the club? You can also hear Souness swill his bile. His feigned indignance when questioned about the lying and cheating years is priceless but you have to wade through a bucket of pish to get there.

Some would think that Rodgers may have reached his level and his philosophies have been implemented extraordinarily in an extraordinary environment where he’s at a club with vastly more financial clout than his competitors. If we where in an environment where there were more challenges from other clubs would he make the right signings ? Like in the epl . Yeah he went close with Liverpool. But could he do it in a more egalitarian environment . He’s achieved his goals domestically with aplomb. But is he the man to punch above his weight like chesney and mon. To me he hasn’t done that yet but I think he has it within him to do it. Maybe not , maybe he doesn’t have an ambitious enough board to work with to do that. Let’s not kid ourselves there are better managers out there to bring us to a higher level. Much as I love the guy

I think we could be better than we are atm and Rodgers has made leaps and bounds to do that. But like any manager of celtic. He will be judged in how far he gets the club in the big stage. Not talking about winning the champions league that’s a fantasy, but someone who can adapt to European football and put us in a more respected position. It’s getting there. Not quick enough in my book. Just my opinion fucking hope I’m proven wrong on Tuesday

So, are we feeling entitled now or are we getting concerned that we might stagnate. Are we asking this squad of players and the back-room staff to take it to the next level or are we being unreasonable? What is the next level? Are we being consistent enough? I’m sure (as always) it’s a mix of both. Perhaps we are like burnt children who are scared of the oven because our parents didn’t provide with the information we needed to be safe around it. Perhaps our oven was Ronny Deila and now we are afraid of being burnt by ovens when they aren’t on.

Christie would make a difference now but we missed Scott Brown. Christie was good at Inverness and that is why we bought him. Johnny Hayes, for all his 100% effort just isn’t as good in his position as Christie is in his. He is standing out with McInness as his coach ! Tomorrow, toe to toe they will probably win. Defend as against Barca( not that we can for 90mins.) and they will probably win. So what? All except a hammering is good for in the long run.

Bobby Murdoch, People told me it was going in but it had more chance of a throw in, Stevie got a great touch to turn it in.
Billy McNeill, Out of no-where Bertie Auld started singing the Celtic song, you should have seen the Italian faces.
John Clark, The modern players don’t bother to much about what we did, I say to them, take a look at that cup with those big handles
in the middle, it is the thing you always want to win, I won it.
Jimmy Johnstone, Football was the greatest part of our lives, just like the bhoys from Brazil or Spain, They lived in poverty like us that’s where all the great players come from…The street.
Willie Wallace, The fans streamed on to the field and it soon turned into a frightened experience, the Portuguese were trying to remove our strips for souvenirs, I was surrounded when some Celtic fans escorted me to the tunnel.
Stevie Chalmers, People say that I was quite lucky, but Jock had us working on that move at least three times a week in training.
Bertie Auld, A lot of the Italians were eyeing us up and down and shaking their heads, they were a tad amused, they were gonny be a lot more bemused by time-up.
Bobby Lennox, On the way to the stadium the driver got lost, but we were at the back of the bus, singing songs, so we didn’t notice.

Fallon should have received his medal as should the other players who contributed mightily to the that wonderful achievement, it is a wrong that should be righted. Celtic FC does NOT need PR, tho’ the PLC may well do. Celtic FC does its own PR by generally playing attractive, attacking football, The Celtic Way, supported by our world-famous and widely-loved Celtic fans. If big Chris could be given a wider platform, by and FOR our fans, then count me in.
PR is riddled with scum like Traynor and can be useful for pulling the wool over mentally-challenged individuals like huns, but should be nowhere near Parkhead. It’s the sort of shite you would get from the PLC telling us how much we need a fucking hotel as opposed to creating the very best team we can sustainably afford. End of day, we’re a football team, and Celtic FC’s enough for me. Hope that’s not too blunt.
COME ON YOU BHOYS IN GREEN.

I do not have great hopes for the SFSA survey as it did not ask the correct questions. It did not investigate whether supporters were dissatisfied with how the game is being run in Scotland. I could be wrong but I think nothing significant will emerge from the results. However, it does lay down a benchmark. Hopefully, further research will be conducted using focus groups to get at how supporters feel about specifics such as the SFA handling of the Res12 issue and the assessment of King as fit and proper. As it stands, I fear we shall get findings that are too generic.

There were other players worthy of a medal at that time too. Sadly only the goalkeeper could be used as a sub and only one extra medal presented.
Big Yogi, Wullie Oneill, Charlie Gallacher Joe McBride etc had all helped in getting us to the final they all deserve our respect and admiration.
Fallon of course was on the end of some banter from his friend wee Bertie.
When asked about Fallon Bertie said hes the only goalie i know where he uses the net to stop the ball.

Poppy man…
Went a walk at lunchtime….Glasgow Central station now has 3 Poppy Stations set up inside main concourse. Its no longer just a pair of proud old paratrooper with collection tins…we are talking big fancy stands, multiple folk..people in Poppy Scotland anoraks here there and everywhere.

And sure enough, there were the old paratroopers round the corner with collection tins too on Buchanan Street.

its not even November…cant the weans get Halloween and Bonfires Night to enjoy before the manipulation starts.

Desi,
Well said!
Personally i have never worn the Poppy as i see it as the same thing as a union jack & i know what i do with union jacks.
If the Poppy was CLEARLY a symbol of both WWI & WWII, then i could see myself considering wearing one, however the Poppy has been diluted in it’s meaning by including ALL conflicts, fuck that, i’m not wearing a symbol that celebrates the murdering bastards who set foot on Irish soil under the Butcher’s apron.
I have great respect for those who gave their lives in both World Wars, the things those men & women had to face during that time is unimaginable.
R.I.P. each and every one.

Exactly, Monti. I’d consider the white Peace Poppy but “no (red) poppies on our hoops” nor on my clothes.
