Celtic Diary Monday October 9: Celts Head To Dubai Again

After the game against “rangers ” in December, the squad will be given a weeks break before joining up in Dubai for a training camp. Wives and children can come too.

The biscuit tin has been pulled out, though, and it was only after much toing and froing and whinging and moaning that the club agreed to pay for the flights.

Economy class, of course.

Thats the players flights as well as any family…

Some things never change…

Local news, and Leigh Griffiths has been noticed down here. Stoke City are linked with a January move for the prolific forward.

Well, you know you’ve made it when Stoke come looking for you.

As expected, Scotland failed to qualify for the World cup finals, the ninth successive failure to break into the latter stages.

It’s all very well to blame Strachan, who sort of saved the campaign by introducing Celtic players but then reverted to his Engish based donkeys, and really shouldn’t be surprised that those uninspiring plodders failed to get the result needed in Slovenia. Or Slovakia, or wherever it was.

Fair enough, he lives and dies by his own decisions, but he does seem to have been hanging around the man who coaches Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha for longer than is healthy, especially after his post match comments…

“Genetically, we’re behind. The last campaign we were the second smallest, apart from Spain, so that means we had to pick a team tonight to try and combat the height and strength. Even at that we couldn’t combat their height and strength at set plays. ”

Spain, to, have sen their international aspirations severely handicapped by a lack of height amongst their players…

Genetically, we have to work at things. Don’t know if we can get big women and men together, and see what we can do. It is a problem for us because we have to fight harder for every ball and jump higher. Nobody tell me their technique apart from one player is better than any of ours but physically we have a problem.

I beg to differ, it’s a mentality problem, the traditional attitude of those who tug forelocks and sit at the back of buses.

It’s rampant throughout Scottish football-well, one section of it….

Maybe though, the blame lies elsewhere.

The SFA are ultimately responsible for the national team, and therefore they should be the ones under pressure this morning. If you can get any of them to come out and face the media.

The SFA are ultimately responsible for the success of Scottish football, and its image worldwide.

So far all they have done is give the rest of the world the impression that its a second rate footballing nation, on and off the field, and at the very least it needs is an image change.

Starting with new people in charge everywhere would go some of the way to attaining that.

Image result for new broom sweeps clean

The viewing figures for the recent Celtic -“rangers ” game have caused a bit of alarm among the powers that be. With a strong challenge unlikely to come from Ibrox this-or any other -season, the focus has been on the demise of “rangers “, presumably before BBC Scotland  do one of those telethon appeals to save a Scottish institution.

Although Aberdeen have matched Celtic this season, and share the top spot on points, it’s all about the “Old Firm”.

( Younger readers may like to google the term. )

Alan Brazil, in the Sunday Presbyterian, said;

THE Old Firm game will always be a hot ticket in Glasgow.

Oh. good start. Maybe he means “hot ” as in “counterfeit”.

But with Rangers languishing so far behind Celtic, it is in danger of losing its box office appeal elsewhere.

I was stunned by the TV viewing figures for this season’s first Old Firm clash.

Just 275,000 people tuned in across the Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports Main Event channels to watch Celtic’s 2-0 victory at Ibrox.

That’s 26,000 fewer than watched the same day’s Championship clash between Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

It’s a whopping 145,000 fewer than the following day’s Sheffield derby.

Talk about a wake-up call.

We can say all we like in Scotland about how big a fixture the Old Firm clash is – and boy do we like to talk about it!

Er, when you say “we “….

But the figures don’t lie. Fewer people than ever south of the border feel the same way.

Maybe they know something we don’t-or at least don;t want to accept. Not us, as such, you now who…

The Old Firm don’t register – and that’s a terrible thing for Scottish football.

Fans of other clubs might say it doesn’t matter, that I’m wrong. But I’m not.

Because when it comes to renegotiating Scotland’s TV deal, it puts the SPFL in a position of weakness.

Like it or not, the Old Firm game is the Scottish game’s big bargaining tool.

If it isn’t drawing in the viewers, it spells trouble for every other Scottish club.

As long as this mentality continues, the game is knackered.

This fear of not having these four games to sell as the brand’s flagship product is tearing apart some people. Yet they are people who have little to do with the game, and even less to do with improving or selling it.

The fact is the Old firm is dead.

What Brazil is alluding to is the fact it’s been noticed outside Scotland, and the same club myth so regularly fed to audiences in the north isn’t acceptable down south.

As a result, audiences are dropping, simply because it isn’t the Old Firm and it isn’t exactly much of a contest these days, and it certainly won’t be relevant when the medals are handed out in May.

Those who donated to the recent foodbank appeal may want to know what was raised..

Sorry to interrupt your weekend guys & gals but thought I’d give you the total for donations received at Celtic park… 4.8 tonnes❤️

That’s excellent.

A magnificent achievement.

Hoe lonely does this fellow look, away from all his pals ?

And then…

On Saturday we showed this picture..

Firstly it’s not something that would bother me one way or another. Secondly I detest the people who mismanage our game and I’m so glad they wont be swanning about Moscow, St Petersburg, Yekaterinburg etc in the forthcoming summer. If that impacts the players so be it. I would rather the players got a decent break from the game than play in Russia (would they have got through the play-offs under Strachan?… doubt it).

Some folk need to remember that Strachan lost the services of Brown & Armstrong for the end of the campaign.
In the case of Brown this was a massive loss, as his presence and energy not to mention aggression is vital to the team.
I do think Strchan got his tactics and team selection wrong last night tho.

Monti I tend to agree that we should all wish the team well even if it causes logistical problems for Celtic.
However wee Gordon makes it very very hard to do so, Philips, Bannan, Mulgrew,S Fletcher, Anya,, Martin should be nowhere near a squad which apparently has enough quality not to need Christie, Mclean, McGinn, MaGregor Jesus even Walker at Hearts would be a better shout.
Oh and whilst I am moaning why the fuck are we moving a genuinely outstanding left-back to the right hand side to accommodate a player who is short on match fitness and sharpness because he can’t get a club game!!

No a big fan of the internationals but at the same time they are very important. 20 years of shite for a big footballing nation like ourselves is an absolute disgrace. I say big footballing nation because that is what we are in terms of history and interest, sadly thats as far as it goes these days. The SFA throughout the years have set us back about 50 years. We are a laughing stock now and I still believe we are paying for the Craig Brown years. A lot will disagree but its my opinion. I’m not leaping to Strachan’s defense in terms of his genetic’s argument but I do remember attending a game at Hampden years ago where I think WGS was in the line up v Belgium.

The Belgians so noticeably towered over our players that I could see it and remember it. Perhaps WGS does too and the “W” does not stand for Walter.

I also noticed on replay a physical battle between a Slovenian and Berra where I thought Berra might have been fouled but he definitely came off second. It led to the second goal.

I wouldn’t have used the word genetics as it can be given other meanings but it does help to have big players although physicality is no defense of lack of skill.

Techincally our game lags behind the continent in general terms. First touch which gives time and space to elude a hammer thrower is essential and few of our players have it at the required level.

On the night, after about 15 minutes I could see what we were up against physically and both their goals came from set plays and I think the physical factor is what determined WGS selection more than anything. He might even have done McGinn and MacGregor a favour for the future.

Broxburnbhoy

Some how come short Little Spain have been nearly unbeatable for so long? WGS was clutching at straws with the genetics excuse. He picked the teams and he got some of them very wrong full of English lower league players. He was forced into playing celtic players recently and gu as what – Scotland did a lot better. I think he has to take blame for this failure. While we can admire his stubborn streak, it has led to Scotland failing to qualify again. What are the SFA doing about nurturing young football talent in Scotland anyway?

He must have known very well what he was up against or else he didn’t do his job, he must have known the size of the opposition and yet he still picks Bannan. We had four at least midfielders he could have used, more physical and fresh legs, being that midfielders use up most energy in a team and yet he reverted to type. By playing midfielders who were exhausted by the previous game, he should have utilised Forrest, McGinn, Cal-Mac and Snodgrass, bet he wishes he did now, but its too late, he has no one to blame but himself. Empty jerseys from the English lower leagues.

It’s not nine consecutive failures, it’s ten. Last tournament they qualified for was France 98. 5 euros and 5 World Cup finals on the bounce they’ve failed to qualify. Impressive.

Spot on Hendy. How any Celtic supporter can lend their support to this mob I don’t know . the blame game has already started and gordon is getting it from all quarters. Personally, I couldn’t care less if Jock Stein objected to what i have to say. Stein never paid into Hampden to listen to celtic players getting booed and abused. I have. If Stein was willing to accept this then fair play to him but I am not. I have not been At A Scotland game for about 30 years because of it and will not attend one again. And this is before we talk about lending any support, tacit or otherwise, to the SFA. I would prefer if no celtic player ever pulled on the rancid pink jersey again. And as for Strachan’s we are genetically behind nonsense. Have we not been fighting against that for years. Picking big heffers instead of actual players. I cannot comment on the performance of Strachan or his team as I have not watched any of the qualifiers. Clearly the buck stops at him as he picks the team. But his comments are ridiculous, what does ‘genetically behind’ are Scots people a subspecies of subhumans?

Height is always a factor but Berra and Mulgrew are not midgets. Nobody ever faulted WGS for not being tall, nor Jinky.
Chris Martin is taller than Griff but who is the much better striker? I think like many who left to ply their trade down south WGS became an ‘Uncle Jock’ by refusing to believe that any Scot who stayed to work in Scotland is somehow superior to even the third rate English-based crap on offer: Phillips/Bannan/Martin etc.
Tierney, Gordon, Griffiths, Brown and Armstrong all bailed WGS out of disaster. Only when Griff led the line did Scotland’s fortunes change. Typical WGS, change things when it was too late. Brendan Rodgers would make us an excellent national coach but please haud yer wheesht! And those god awful strips—more like lingerie than anything else. I agree with Monti that I want our national team to succeed and I felt really bad about yesterday. But when Griff started to hobble my allegiance to Celtic kicked in. Imagine losing Griff to injury in such a losing cause? I also enjoy the football we play compared to what the old guard like WGS serve up. He is yesterday’s man and our national team played like yesterday’s men. Possession was 70-30 in Slovenia’s favour! We were totally outplayed. Tierney as a right back? Griff partnered by a clumsy donkey? McGregor and Forrest may have saved the day, but naw….Nobody (except Pedro) does worse tv interviews. I sometimes don’t know what WGS is on about— as bad as gene pools, caravans and barking dogs. He served our club well but Brendan is serving it even better, playing real football.
A winning national team?
Gordon
Ralston/Berra/Mulgrew/Tierney
Brown/Armstrong
Forrest/McGregor/McGinn
Griffiths
It’s called commitment, energy and a winning attitude.
At least WGS recognised Broonie’s worth.
Back to the Celtic.

Its a long time since i wanted them to win. Most of the time i simply don’t care. At other times, I want them to lose as it suits Celtic better. The less games they play for the national team the better for Celtic. They do not play against the best players in the world playing for Scotland. Slovakia, Slovenia even England don’t have the quality of player that Munich or PSG have. I can’t remember the last WC game I watched. I think it was Ireland vs Italy in USA 1994. If that actaully was in 1994? Won’t watch a single game from Russia. Even the humiliation of England no longer interests me. I am taking that as a sign I am growing up and no longer only wish for the failure of teams I hate. I genuinely don’t care about the Sevco either. I no longer feel the need to look for their score at the weekend.

Their goalie cost £45 million quid and CG rates him No1 in the world. Canny go this fec Scotland it does us no favours. We experience relatively very little top class football in a season. International football exposes our players to a higher level of player, different formations and tactics and they rub shoulders with the likes of Fletcher who has played at the highest level (ok I’m struggling for a second one admittedly). I well remember Bertie Vogts being bemused at a Scotland squad cheering the opposition in a Celtic CL game but with the number of Celts and ex-Celts in the squad those days are over. Accept the attitudes to the SFA but don’t tell me internationals don’t benefit our players.

Like you, I think Sky does nothing for Scottish Football. I wouldn’t buy a Murdoch product anyway.

This might be more of an appeal for Sky (or at least Sky Sports) subscribers. How are these subscriptions in Scotland these days?

If the lack of viewers is down to fewer subscibers then an organised message to Sky and the SFA to say this is a bad deal for fans and for Scottish Football. Oranise a protest cancellation of Sky Sports (if not teh whole thing.

If the deal was improved then I still won’t be buying a Murdoch product.

Im 6’4″ but Irish. However I m happy to work like a prize racehorse and be sent out to stud to help impregnate your big Scottish women – for a fee, and I’ll even waive their right to Irish citizenship. Think of it as giving something back

Watching the game as a fairly neutral observer I thought Scotland did okay – international football is usually fairly turgid, and Scotland are no different, where they did fail was in game management – after going ahead they absolutely refused to try to keep the ball, seeming to believe defending their 18 yard box for the remainder of the game was the way to go.

The book I’ve just finished is a biography of Heydrich – SS man, big believer in racial genetic profiling. I’ll be honest I didnt see its connections to the Scottish National team at first but obvioulsy Gordon Strachan likes to read books too…

Forelock tugging is a national pastime up here for a majority.
Too wee, too small, too stupid.

I want Scotland to win, so disappointed though not surprised at yesterday’s result. I certainly thought such an outcome was on the cards when I saw the team selection. Why WGS did not start with CalMac and McGinn is beyond me – the pair of them would have made a difference. If we look at how both men played in the Celtic v Hibs game the other week – energy, pace and an eye of a pass and they score goals as well – that would have been an asset yesterday. I also want Celtic players to come home unscathed, and like many on here on this site for me Celtic come first. The World Cup is run by FIFA – n organisation that makes even the SFA look good in comparison, so that tempers my enthusiasm for that particular competition. And as for Strachan’s comment about genetics – what an embarrassment: has he forgotten about the like of Patsy Gallacher, Bobby Collins and Jinky? All were wee men playing in eras where football was very much more physical than it is today.

It could have been worse, we could have had Levein with his goalie and ten defenders.

Scotland qualifying for the finals, another pass for that lot at the SFA, a shower of muppets with their banner ‘this time’ they should all go, a shower of idiots that want an away day. Strachan is stupid picking players from the crap that is overpaid and overrated, he should have played McGinn and McGregor yesterday, but he loves his dumplings,
How many of that team could or should play for Celtic? Totally agree Devoy45,

Bring back that fella who actually plays 4-6-0.
That along with the midget mentality should really achieve results. Scotland used to have a conveyor belt of great managers unfortunately it seized up years ago. Not worth wasting energy on them until SFA is cleared out.

Craig Levein the new haha Hearts manager, how can a country divided and led by (SFA) bigots compete at any level. To compete you need unity, a common bond, expert coaches and a long term plan, then stick to it. Play a system that works for you and bring it in at a young level, to help produce the players that you need and then attract those young players to the sport.
It’s worked for other Countries and people would respond to a common long term plan, we keep on talking about it, but not implementing it.
