Celtic Diary Tuesday November 6

Celtic have been drawn at home to face Inverurie Locos or Arbroath in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup. The draw few up a couple of interesting ties, such as Hearts against Hibs, and Ross County against Inverness. so its not only the league which has thrown up a wee bit of interest and excitement this season.

Then you add the news that Craig Levein has been sacked and there was plenty of things to talk about yesterday. With Levein gone, the door is open for gordon Strachan to take the job, and at least make it fun again to watch Scotland, well, the press conferences if not the actual team.

The door might be open, but the media are doing their best already to close it again. Walter Smith is currently unemployed, and the campaign to get him the job is already underway. Despite the fact he walked out last time, has no real record outside of Rangers to boast of-domestically anyway, his European record was shameful, despite reaching a final.

Hugh Keevins, a man who needs no introduction, shouted down callers on Clyde last night who wanted to talk about Strachan, and called Scotland fans whingers and whiners. People who pay to get in are entitled to moan, shug. Especially when you consider the shite we’ve had to put up with. Stewart Regan, the SFA chief, said Levein was sacked purely on results. Thats obvious-three wins, two against Leichtenstein? Hardly whinging, were we, hugh?

Others on the list include Alex MacLeish-also currently unemployed after a disastrous spell in Englands second city, with both clubs, Joe Jordan, Jimmy Calderwood, Billy Davies and Owen Coyle. If you took the best bits from all them and built another person, you still coudn’t make a good manager. We hear Coyle isn’t interested anyway…

Outsiders include Kenny Dalglish and Billy stark-the latter being as good a bet as any. Ally McCoist has ruled himself out of the running, by simply handing in his cv at ย Hampden.

Into the world of journalism again, and it seems Stuart Cosgrove, co-presenter of Radio Scotlands Off the Ball on saturday lunchtimes, has hit all the right notes in his article on the failure of armageddon to hit Scottish football. In fact, a lot of what he says is spot on, but he hasn’t quite made the transition to open honest journalism yet, his examples of west coast bias primarily concern Rangers, but it helps to maintain the two sides of the same coin myth.

Still, its a change from the norm, and can be seen as progress. He does make some good points about the other teams in Scotland, but wouldn’t quite turn his guns on the dead club who have given the game a new lease of life with their extinction. Still, theyre gone now, and the place is all the better for it. Just wish the MSM would start to point that out.

Interestingly, some of the more credible sources around the web are starting to hint at money laundering over at Ibrox. Declarations of crowd size that aren’t as accurate as they should be, players being sold above price-stuff thats always been out there, but now assuming more and more relevance as liquidators BDO start to open whatever paperwork hasn’t already been shredded by the tax dodgers from govan. Except there might well be more than tax dodging.

If that is the case, its fair to assume that other clubs may well have gone down this path to raise money, or save it, or just steal it. Can’t help feeling that Rangers will be a test case, and set a precedent for when Hector goes after a lot of other teams who were at it. And he can’t afford to fail, after all, they could all then liquidate and start over.

Yesterday we asked where we got Darren Jackson from Hibs, and it was for ยฃ1.25m in July 1997. Hibs are up there in the top five teams Celtic have played most often over the years.. Who are the other four?

Ralph,

You appear to detect a potential sea-change in parts of the media? Does that mean changing from sharks to stingrays?
I see ‘ector is having a long hard look at some big, big conglomerates. Maybe he is teething at long last and getting cross with it. If so, I fear there are some in the football world, including an ex and current Glasgow ‘Giant’ or, as a certain Slamon(d) preferred to describe one of them (hope you noticed how I kept the watery theme going there), “a national institution”, who may end up with some teeth marks where it hurts. It will be extremely interesting to see what lies beneath that green algae (there’s that water again) that has been clouding the Govan pond both in the past and in the present.
Ach, to hell with all that slurry. Today should be one of great rejoicing. Today, 6th November 1887 in St. Mary’s church hall in the Calton district of Glasgow, an embryo was conceived that would, over the next 125 years, develop into a unique and incomparable football entity that would take the football world by storm on more than one occasion ans through its charitable works have an insuperable impact on global deprivation that has not been nearly challenged by any other club in the world. If this is not a cause for celebration, even in the midst of some gloomy results, then I will go find a sturdy rope and a fragile chair. It is on occasions such as this that I know why I am proud to be part of the Celtic family. On such days all the world is green and white especially when it is not blemished by Green and Whyte. I am eternally grateful for all that Celtic have given me over a good many years now, the downs as well as the ups. So to all who have brought so much joy from management to players and most of all to you, my friends here on ETims and beyond, to all ‘bampots’ everywhere and to anyone who is as open and welcoming as we are, a happy 125th! May there be many more green and white anniversaries still to come for future generations of good men and true.

Quiz

It would be easy to go for the obvious but I am reminded that there were other dominant teams going back. Some of those mentioned by others have had their spells in the lower leagues over the years. I could not begin to give an answer that is anywhere near correct but I am thinking that the Third Lanarks, Partick Thistles, Falkirks and even Queens Park might provide a few banana skins on this one. Overall, however, I am as usual, sincerely useless at the quiz.
