Celtic Diary Friday October 6: Scots Set Up Glorious Failure

Scotland beat Slovakia-or Slovenia-1-0 last night thanks to an own goal, That means they travel to Slovakia or Slovenia on Sunday looking for a win to clinch a place in the play offs for next years World cup in Russia.

I can hardly contain myself.

Manager Gordon Strachan had five Celts in the squad, four of them started-Gordon, Tierney, Forrest and Griffiths with Calum MacGregor on the bench.

Despite a pedestrian and unimaginative midfield trio, Strachan resisted the urge to use MacGregor, although some say his decision to bring Chris Martin into the fray was an inspired choice paid of as it was he who was in the goalmouth tangle from the Ikechi Anya, himself a substitute.

Possibly, but then again the experienced Celt being included may have meant the game would have been won by then.

I’m biased, of course. Not only because they are Celtic players, but because they are players I’ve heard of who are competing at the highest level in club football. Something which Strachan ignored at the start of the campaign, which may still prove costly.

Craig Gordon won his fiftieth cap by starting the game, and also became the first Scotland keeper to keep three successive clean sheets in a qualifying campaign since Jim Leighton back in 1995.

When you consider the lumps of wood that form Scotlands central defence that is one hell of an achievement.

Still, a result is a result, and it would be nice to settle on supporting just one team at a major international tournament, instead of everyone except England.

Strachan might just get his team to russia, and lets be honest, there is a chance.

As Napoleon Bonaparte once said..

I’d rather have a jammy wee ginger manager than one who understands the game…

If you had wanted to watch the game last night, you had to pay for it. STV, who hold the franchise for the independent television network didnt show the game, and later explained why..

Yeah, okay.

That actually doesn’t explain anything. Except that their lords and masters down south overpaid for the England games on account of having no English football on their menu all season.

And that they are simply the shortbread edition of a London brand.

Back at the ranch, and Patrick Roberts isn’t on international duty, so he kept himself amused by talking to the media. Which makes good reading , actually, as it shows a player who is happy with the way things are and the way they are going..

The manager knows what I bring, he knows the type of player I am and that’s why he’s brought me to the club.

‘He puts a lot of trust in me at such a young age and I strive to repay that. He’s been good ever since he came here and I can only get better for him.

‘I haven’t set myself any specific targets. I just want to keep improving as a player and to win as many games as I can, and stages like the Champions League play a big part in that.’

Another Englishman doing well at Celtic is Scott Sinclair, who is finding out how Alan Thompson felt during his time up here. Like Sinclair, Thompson was outstanding for Celtic, especially in europe, but overlooked by england until a press campaign down there got him into the side.

Once, and you had the feeling that even of he hit a hat trick, set up for and saved a penalty he was never going to be picked again.

Sinclair looks to have the same problem.

Chris Sutton, who had his own issues with the national team when he refused to play in a B match, claiming it was a waste of time, ( It was . Matt Le Tissier scored three or four and still didn’t get picked ) slammed Gareth Southgate for overlooking Sinclair.

Gareth Southgate’s approach towards Scott Sinclair smacks of arrogance.

The England manager publicly saying the Celtic star is not up to the required levels for the squads stunned me.

My big question would be: Why say that?

There’s a World Cup approaching next summer and it’s not as if Southgate has top-quality players cluttered in every corner.

If I was Sinclair, I’d be most unhappy. It’s a public slap in the face and it was unnecessary.

Actually, it was just downright dismissive towards Scotland. If that was an English Premier League player, I’m pretty sure the response would have been along the lines of: “I’m aware of him, he’s in my thoughts. It wasn’t to be this time, but if he keeps working hard, we’ll be aware of it.”

Sinclair didn’t get that. Most probably because he plays north of the border.

What makes it even more bizarre to dismiss the Celtic winger’s abilities are some of the comments that have been made by the England manager over the past week or so.

His frank admission last week that there are players in his current England squad who “do not deserve to be there”, with injuries having opened the door to some who have barely figured his season was even more incredible.

Perhaps Southgate, who doesn’t deserve to be England manager, feels a sort of affinity with them…

One of lifes great mysteries has finally been solved.

The phrase “We Are The People ” has been revealed to actually mean something. Apparently it means they are Gods people…

Or are they?

MASH 69 on twitter argues that it is another Scottish club who hold the divine status…

We asked Gods representative on earth exactly who are the chosen one’s…

Here at Etims we ask the questions the mainstream are scared to ask.

While Ringo Starr awaits the death of Paul McCartney to finally become the best drummer in the Beatles, it was good to see Paul Larkin pay homage to the fab four with his poster advertising his new film, Armageddon…

That is truly a work of art-and of the film lives up to the poster, then it will be well worth watching.

Anyway, as you now, it’s Friday, and as you know, its time for

Etims Knob of the Week.

This week, we saw the SFA Compliance officer practice his ability to alter the rules to suit one particular club, which of course is paramount if one wishes to rise up the ladder of success at the SFA..

Rangers midfielder Carlos Pena to face no SFA action over alleged elbow

SFA compliance officer Tony McGlennan studied footage of the flashpoint in Friday night’s clash at the SuperSeal and the Mexican has no case to answer.

Incredibly, “rangers ” were protesting that Pena had undergone trial by TV, the same images that McGlennan studied, which appeared to show the Mexican was guilty…

Or perhaps not so incredibly.

Only recently a “rangers ” player gesticulated towards opposition fans, and no further action was taken.

Just like no further action is ever taken by the governing body, such as when Scott Sinclair was racially abused. Scott Brown was assualted by a supporter who ran onto the pitch, and Leigh Griffiths was pelted with batteries and coins.

If only we could establish a common theme.

Anyway, for blatantly ignoring the obvious, Tony McGlennan,

you join a list of luminaries in Scottish footballs governing bodies as this weeks

Etims Knob of the Week.

He’s also the guy who will look into finacial irregularities when Rangers were awarded a licence to play in the UCL back in the days when they, like the pound coin used to buy them, existed…

Hi All,
On a theological note Psalms 95.7 is talking about the nation of Israel. the Hebrew nation Gods chosen people, nothing what so ever about Christendom as it didn’t exist then.
Matthew 12.41 referring to Ist Kings is actually talking about Jesus.

On a more serious note if Scotland do qualify for the finals wouldn’t that make a major conflict between Celtic and Scotland as the qualifying rounds for next years Champions league are played around the same time as the finals, with so many Celtic players in the Scotland squad it would mean a depleted Celtic. Just a thought.HH

I wonder if their rule book has as many defence mechanisms to help out a member club!?

Gotta be honest, when wee Gordon came to the Tic. I wisny happy, how could you be when the blessed Martin left. But then you realise that WGS had to get rid of players at the club on big salaries, clear the decks and move us forward. I was not a fan of his and then Artmedia, pure shite crabbit Crocker just had to remind us on Sky last night, (Bastard). The players that he brought in Gary Caldwell et all, I thought were gash and the fitba. pure mince, but but gradually he sorted it and the team moved further than I could believe and that is what its all about, belief.
As the manager of Scotia. he is getting more out of average players and after a bad start he put his belief in the Celtic players, the backbone of the Scottish team, with Broony to motivate them all.
The players respect him big style and would walk through a brick wall for him, so, although not a fan of Scotland, because of past history, I wish them much success, the wee mahn deserves it.
The one thing we never think of is.. the players themselves, who want to play for their country and win as many caps as they can, I totally understand that and wish them well.

Crocker hates the Celtic, as most of them do, listen to them going mental when the opposition score, when Celtic get a goal, hatred.
Anyways not to sure I want Ecosse to qualify as it could damage the team in the pre-qualifiers for the UCL, Chesney carries a bit of luck about him, needed an own goal to win.

Personally don’t understand why any Celtic player gives a tinkers curse about playing for Scotland. I am always disappointed when they pull on the disgraceful, luminous pink abomination. Celtic players already play at the top level in the sport, the CL. The World Cup has lost its appeal. More and more players retire to focus on theri club career at about 30, as it should be. The fact that the WC is in Qatar will result in the competition being terminally diminished ande we can only hope that within a generation it is no more or is a tournie for u17s. If UEFA expand the CL to make it a European League it will probably need to be played over 10/11 months a year (football already is) and this will eliminate the internationals as players will need rest time during the season as well as a month or 6 weeks at the end and the internationals will just get in the way of the cash being generated. We can but hope.

What is it about Fitba and sport in general that attracts all kinds of dip shitters to want to participate in sporting governess….Fame and dosh.
Sport should be pure a beautiful thing, to be enjoyed and relished, not just for the competitors but also the people, instead all kinds of miscreants seem determined to corrupt and destroy that precious thing. Will they ever learn.

Celtic’s battles are with the SFA, the corrupt suits in offices with their shredding machines.
If you are Scottish you should burst a fucking gut to play for your country, it’s that fucking simple!
Only it isn’t………

The politics of Scotland, the battles with the SFA have caused damage in the Celtic support, irreparable? Maybe, but we shouldn’t let these cunts win, they should not be allowed to dilute our Scottishness.
It isn’t easy being a Scotland fan at the same time as being a Celtic supporter, but it fucking should be!

Monti,

large sections of our ,(Celtic) supports apathy towards Scotland national team comes from deeper than Celtic’s treatment from the SFA.

Back on 25th May this year on BBC 6 o’clock news , they did a piece on our Lisbon win. To my surprise it was actually a good piece, high in praise of the football achievement but more interestingly it also touched on the social repercussions for the Celtic support.
It pointed out the position of the vast majority of the Celtic support at the time ; largely from the Irish Catholic community.
I think it was T Divine interviewed , talking of the feeling of being an “unwanted , almost underclass in protestant Scotland” ; and how the win gave this community a pride which allowed them to “raise their heads” and move forwards with a new self-confidence.
Times have moved on since then but many of the fans who had parents/grandparents in that community don’t easily forget how they were treated in Scotland.
Indeed , even now aren’t we still being told (in song) to “go back home, the famine’s over”.
Think it was Nicholas who said he was called a “fenian B” in every ground in Scotland.
Nowadays we have a broad fanbase with many Scottish fans (outwith the Scots/Irish community).
I can understand some of them being confused/frustrated by some of their fellow Celtic fans attitude towards the national team , but that attitude goes deeper than just a “Celtic/Sfa” rammy.
We are often all looking at the same subject , just from different perspectives ; no-one right and no-one wrong .
For me , with all 4 grandparents Irish , but having been born and raised in Scotland I have my own PERSONAL take on it which will be different to many other Celtic fans ; that is that neither the Republic nor Scottish national teams could ever give me a tenth of the joy/jubilation or pride that I felt standing in the Anderlecht stadium last Wed night. As I said though , that’s just my perspective , no wrong or right in it.

That’s all very fine, however i wasn’t talking about the ‘ joy ‘ Celtic bring into you or my lives, i was simply stating, as a Scottish national, it SHOULD be easy to be proud to play for or support OUR country of birth.
It isn’t and i did touch on that m8……i seem to be like a yo yo when it comes to the national side, it’s a pity it has been made like that.

yes,

I got what you were talking about .

I was then pointing out that some have a different viewpoint , and some of the reasoning behind that different viewpoint.

As I also stated , we will all have varying opinions on the subject ; but that they’re just that – our own individual personal opinions .

So once again – there’s no right or wrong in it – each entitled to their own view from their own personal perspective , mine being I’d rather talk of the “joy” of Celtic than Scotland national team.

Usual quality post, Ralph.
That “we are the people” patter has always kinda bemused me, so I thought about the underlying psyche of ‘ra people’. Briefly. In fact, very briefly.
On the one hand you get that terminally stupid cry of “We are the people” and a bit later on it’s “Nobody likes us, we don’t care”. From the supremacist to the ridiculous.
Well I, for one, ain’t wasting good time tryin’ to work that shit out any more, just profoundly fucking weird to me.

That aside, watched the game last night with my wife. Scotland looked okay until their man got his 2nd yellow for diving, and the ref was spot on here to send him off. However instead of Scotland taking control the game went the way of Slovakia more than Scotland. As we struggled to break them down I’m saying by HT that CalMac would just thrive out there. Anyway no CalMac but we DID improve with Martin coming on and were very unlucky with him and then The Griff hitting the bar. I’d remarked that it’ll take something silly here, after some incredible saves from their keeper, too, and lo and behold we got the winner. The Griff’s tenacity won the ball to Anya and we know the rest. I was really pleased to win and hope we can go on to win in Slovenia, but it’s a very poor 2nd to how I feel about CELTIC.

Ralph,

What can you do with mike’s boot up your arse but comply.

I have been reading the Diary daily but have a lot on my plate right now – I may even be getting as heavy as Monti – just going by reports my bhoy, not dirty photos. Today’s is such an enjoyable read I was going to comment anyway but that blast from the Dundee bard changed the direction of my wind – put it right up instead of right oot ma erse. And, thank God for incontinence pants.

When it comes to international football and Scotland, I think you hit every nail in my head to day. It is just so hard to dismiss the anti-Celticisms (well, they invented Trumpisms) of 30/40 years that have emanated from the terraces of Scotland’s kid-on stadium or shit-hole to be more accurate(if you think it is not, you have never experienced its alluminium toilet bins and loch pish that formed around them – aye, Bonnie Scotland right enough). If anyone of my generation was ever hard-skinned enough to go to a Scotland international, they will know what I mean. I tried over the years with the same results every time. It was just an Ibrox annex. So, like so many of my era, I have pretty much no interest in internationals and could not give a flying duck about qualifying for even a chicken kiev next year. To continue the biblical theme that seems to be in vogue today, we are asked to be crucified like Christ. But even He had only to endure 3 hours not over a century. Never mind, the Resurrection is just around the corner and Scottish football is being redeemed right as we speak both on and off the field by St. Brendan and Res 12. Having said all this, I have always had a “bit-a-love” for the wee ginger heid in charge, especially the way he sticks up for Celtic and puts the press gangs in their rightful place – up the creek without a paddle!

Regarding McGregor, well maybe’s aye and maybe’s naw. I don’t really care as far as Scotland goes. Even Big Jock had a right stubborn streak in him and, though he always preached it was all about the fans, he never cow-towed to their demands.

By the time I get around to commenting again, we will be back with football and not the farce that is “internationals”. England for the world cup! – aye that wally one wae auld Lizzy’s napper on the side. Why would Scott Sinclair want the embarrassment? I am getting fair scunnert with the big balloon images (not the ones that play) in the front gardens being busted after the first two games of the finals. Mind I love watching the car windae St. George’s flags fair flagging around the same time as the red and white bunting starts drooping round the guttering. Not that I gloat or anything but it saves me having to check the results. It is also uplifting to see English chins dragging the grun even harder than usual. The one exception is the woman that lives with me. She makes sure it’s mine instead – all year round. It makes a fine mess of ma beautifully coiffured beard and brings tears to my eyes. Oh, maybe’s that’s jist the way she looks :).

Anyway, I hope all you guys are well. I have joined in all your joys and sorrows, animal, vegetable and mineral. Even though I have not said, you’re your happiness and your pain have been mine. It is a joy to see the comments regularly back to civility and mere banter, with the “odd” exception. It is just so much more enjoyable to read them when there is no abuse. Keep up the excellent work. For those who ask how I have time for this today, it is because one of my young protégées has missed out on my expertise till tomorrow. I hope he is not like a bear wae a sore heid.

By the way, interesting times ahead at my local football club – well they think what they play is football. I do not know if it has been reported up there yet, but the good aulp polis have raided Newcastle Utd. on much the same grounds as they did the Big Hoose. It will be very interesting to see what happens and how the F.A. and English media react to any shenanigans by Mr. Ashley. Will there be reverberations felt over the border?

I’ll have a go at the caption:

“What’s it all about, Alfie?” or “Here Gareth. Sinclair says to shove it up your arse.”

If we don’t make a cunt of it in Slovenia it’s looking like a few ‘home nations’ in the play-offs. Even against Eire, I’d find myself supporting Scotland and I’ve no shame about that; having said that I wouldn’t be overly fazed either way.

Weered, all is grand, and it’s the same from me, just blether/gibber/whatever; if we were any good at this comic stuff we’d be gettin’ paid for it, like Billy Connolly, Frankie Bhoyle or Kevin Bridges. Oh, they’re all Tims, are they? Well, just shows you how good the Irish/Scottish craic can be. Come on ye (Wee) Reds. BTW, liked the patter about Cliftonville’s cup winning exploits from a recent ETims post; puts the fucking lot of us in our place.

Weered, if ONE great thing came out of ‘The Troubles’, like Cliftonville being rescued, it’s a helluva price for a football club to stay alive. I’m sure you understand what I mean here. Personally, I’d have accepted if Celtic went under, from the very early 70’s, if it saved all those Martyrs of Ireland as a whole. The worst of all, much later, were the Bhoys on the Roll of Honour; I’ve come to have a distant understanding of the sacrifice made by those colossal Martyrs of the Hunger Strike. I needed no such ‘education’ on the most evil of evil bastards, Thatcher. If there’s a Hell then that bitch is in it.

Looks like a cracking Monday Night fixture with Wales V Ireland with all to play for. Scotland also in the mix,and if only they could have held out against Engurland how things would have been so much better. Big Murph is one I think who never really got his chance at Celtic, could have been a much better player given more game time.

Scottish football as we know m8 is corrupt to the core. Picking as many Celtic players showed how desperate wee GMS was.He was in the last chance saloon.
The brogues in the upper rooms would not have been happy, but the proof is in the pudding.
Pick your best players it is that simple only then can you be judged.
Wee GMS as you say was too slow or told not too.
Either way a great oppertunity was missed in the early part of the campaign.
I hope Scotland get the win.
What a boost that would be for our players.

My own memory of big Daryl Murphy was that he seemed laboured and unsure. I’ve no memory of any out-the-seat stuff from him but he didn’t play that many games, so who knows?
Wales vs Eire should be well worth the watch (and hopefully Eire get the gold one). Scotland have clawed their way back and are the finishing horse, so let’s hope they hump Slovenia.
Really though, this fuckin’ international lot instead of watching Celtic?
No, Nay, Never (no nay never no more), will I play the Wild Rover……

Jimmybee, you go from great to grand and, as you’ll know, there’s nothing ‘grander’ in Ireland. Your research and delivery of all things Tim is 2nd to none (except mine an’ ‘charlie’s’ of course) 🙂
To be educated by your own is truly invigorating as it proves my belief in the intelligence, application and tenacity of us Tims.
I, never in my life, sat at the ‘back of any bus’;
DOBs didn’t ever rule me, and never will. They did, however, collectively drive me out of my homeland. I don’t forgive it.
Anyway, your words about Che Geuvarra’s dad struck a chord with me; my blood too runs with Rebels in it.
Thanks again and hope this makes sense; I’m now offtae bed.
Goodnight one and all Tims, wherever you may be.

Jimmy, I somehow missed that wee video before, it’s absolutely fantastic; the light in that wee face when Naka gie’s him his boots just screams “this is what it means to be Celtic”. His determination in getting back for the presentation at last year’s SC Final speaks more volumes.
What a Lhad, what a Mhan, what a Tim, and only just 20. If thoughts are forces, KT will go on to be a legend, just like his favourite, big Tommy Gemmell, and he’ll do it all at Paradise.
