Celtic Diary Monday October 2: Still Unbeaten, But Only Just

Calum MacGregor came riding to Celtic’s rescue on Saturday as Hibernian bucked the trend and decided to try to win at Celtic Park, something which doesn’t seem to occur to many teams as an option.

The under rated midfielder scored twice-his second with just ten minutes or so to go-to give Celtic a point when frankly it didn’t look as though it was going to happen.

MacGregor had opened the scoring after fifteen minutes but those pesky east coasters hauled themselves in front in the second half, which had everybody desparately searching for someone to blame, until the bold Calmac stepped up to slot in an equaliser.

Hardly anyone has given any credit to Hibernian, who were far and away the toughest domestic opponent thus far this season, but whats also interesting is that when you look at the league table, Aberdeen have been quietly going about their business as well..

Hibernian host Aberdeen after the international break, and we could use a favour…
Whilst we need to accept that sometimes teams will raise their game, and get the occasional result, we do still need to look at ourselves though.
In this case, there were signs of lethargy replacing strategy, and maybe its a good thing there’s a wee break from club duty.
However, as usual, the referee comes in for a little bit of criticism.
Willie Collum is not noted for his ability, he’s at best error strewn and at worst a cheat.
Somewhere in between we get the attention seeking little man who no doubt was bullied at school, is still bullied at home and gets pushed out of the way when he goes to the bar. Then he takes all of his little insecurities to work with him on a Saturday afternoon and resets his sense of worth.
Scott Sinclair was bearing down on goal late on, and was hauled back by Efe Ambrose. Collum, feeling an afinity with the big Nigerian, who has also had his critics, didn;t think it was a penalty, although bizarrely told JohnnyHayes that had Sinclair gone down, he would have awarded the spot kick.

We can safely say Sinclair was impeded, and we can say with a degree of assurance that Collum saw the incident.
That, to me, puts him in the cannot do his job properly category. Or, will not do his job properly.
You decide.
For me, he should hang up his whistle and get a job digging holes in the road and filling them in again.
Though no doubt someone would have his sandwiches off him every morning.
For MacGregor, his  two goals were rewarded ( rewarded-lol )with a call up to the national team, who are playing a double header this week.
He said;

All I have ever tried to do is keep progressing and keep learning at Celtic,”

“I have tried to make an impact whenever I have been in the team.

“I was pleased with the goals against Hibs but obviously I would have preferred it if they had come in a game when we had taken all three points.

“But for now it is just about trying to learn all the time.

“I actually haven’t spoken to Gordon Strachan since I was last in the Scotland squad.

“It has just been up to me to go away and concentrate on my football with Celtic and do everything I can to play well. I wanted to be in the Champions League this season, to try and play there and make a contribution in that kind of environment.

“I have been working on doing the things that manager wants me to do and I have always felt that if I do that then everything else takes care of itself.”

He deserves a run of starts for Celtic. He’s earned it, and with rogic and Armstrong under performing recently, he should step in and claim that place.
Elsewhere, under fire “rangers ” boss Pedro Caixinha confounded his critics when he led his Kenny miller less side to a 4-1 win at Hamilton. They might want him out over at Ibrox, but as long as he keeps delivering, he’ll still be there.
A couple of wins every month should be enough.
The recent spat with Kenny miller has divided their support.
Some are behind the  man,,,
Others are offering support to the veteran forward, who is after Caixinha’s job, with upside down expert Graeme Murty mentioned as his number two.
Will the fans be singing the Miller song ?
Frankly, who gives a toss ?
Aberdeen and Celtic are neck and neck at the top of the league, and then four sides below them are locked in a battle for third.
Derek McInnes quietly rebuilt his side over the summer. Stevie May has made a difference, and they now have a genuine goalscorer in their ranks.
Over the season, Celtic should still prove too strong for them, but if they continue to rack up the points against the lesser team, we might well have four extra cup finals to play in.
At the foot of the table, the poor start by Kilmarnock has led to their manager, Lee McCulloch,  being,er, mutually consented, and the Ayrshire club has promised to “scour the globe ” for a replacement.
Or, they’ll ring Barry Ferguson, Alex McLeish or even Billy Davies as they decide there’s no point in going too far in case it rains.
Due to a somewhat hectic and unpredictable weekend, we go back to Friday for the last caption competition..

Good to see support for the people of Catalunya trying to vote. The scenes of bullying police were frightening, brining back Franco’s tactics and policies or were they copied from Thatcher’s against the miners?

Celtic performed in their traditional post European mode, two terrific weeks and well done to Kenny and the Hibees for taking advantage, I hope Calum McGregor gets game time for Scotland if tats what he wants. Personally I have been checking to see if his granny had ever had a weekend in Dublin. In a perverted sense the most ” entertaining” part of Saturday was Willie Colum, we were debating whether he could get any worse during the game and just when we thought probably not, he did.

John McGinn should be a transfer target in January, i think the guy would do really well at Celtic.
He is also a Celtic supporter who like Tierney, would bust a gut for the club.
Hope it happens and he is in Hoops soon.

I don’t quite… : On the one hand, I like John McGinn and think he’d be a good addition to the squad, but I’m not sure I see him as Broony’s replacement… yet… as he’s yet to show it at the highest level – Champions League or International level (where IMHO he’s been OK but not much better than that) the jury’s still out for me.

However, IF -as seems likely – Armstrong goes to Ingerlund next year, he’s the best realistic replacement I see around. But – yeah I know he’s a different type of player – but is he a better prospect than Ryan Christie???

On the other hand (I have 3 of them 🙂 , there’s no doubting his Celtic credentials, and he could turn out to be the new Paul McStay and make me et my wrds 🙂

FFS I don’t half spout some shit on a Monday morning!

Carl your the king of the jungle a jungle VIP, I wanna be like yoohoohoo. McGinn is 22 and at the same stage that Broony was at that age, he surely has an eye for the goal.
Just like Broony at that stage in his career, mainly untried and untested in that same situation. Like Monti say’s he has Celtic in his heart so would go that extra mile, he also has the same battling qualities that Broony has. As you say Christie is a different type of player and is showing up really well for the sheep, both would blend well together and with the rest of the youngsters be the Tic.s new quality street kids. Join the shit spouting club. 😉

4 points dropped at home coming back from European champions league games.
We may have a title race on our hands if the trend continues.
Europa league would make it even more difficult but we should have the players to cope. Again I think Brendan got it wrong on Saturday, with his switch at half time, but he gets too much right to dwell on it. Undefeated and on we go.
So sad to hear of the shooting in Vegas, 20+killed many more injured. Thoughts and prayers with them at this sad time.

No chance of a title challenge, cos the sheep do, what they do, that is to get bleet and then baaaa. We still have two good players to come back and are not far of joining the squad in Kouassi and Sviat. once they come back and join Broony and Armstrong, with two additional players in January, watch us go!! See how they run.!!

Where did all the love go?
the slippage of our core values,
is the love just for show,
when our desire should be for it to grow.

Auld people in Internment Homes,
while we chatter on our mobile phones,
youngsters out drinking on the radge,
wearing it like an honour badge.

How can the love not return,
it would stop the greets and gurn,
at all of life’s petty set-backs,
or ambitions thwarted and our stomach churn

Do not forget that people are kind,
caught up in life’s daily grind,
let the love return,
we cannot continue to be blind,
to show empathy for others,
our human sisters and brothers.

Don’t think it anything to do with European games. Broonie’s absence I a big factor. Broonie keeps the ball and on Saturday we didn’t.

1-1 v St Johnstone 2-2 v hibs after Eurooean games.
The players put a lot of energy into Europe where we don’t have the ball as much.
Squad rotation is essential, and we shouldn’t be relying on one player no matter how influential he is. We need to get going after Europe as those two games show we have been not at our best.

I thought the problems were obvious at the weekend: players missing (Broony and Jozo) and players underperforming for whatever reason (Rogic, Forrest, Sinclair, Ntcham, Roberts when he came on, Eduard, Griffith, Dembele, Lustig. Lennon knows all about post-CL fatigue and took advantage of it by going all out for a win, except for a short spell when Celtic dominated just before the break. I presume BR won’t risk Jozo two games in a row so we need someone else to partner Boyata, not Lustig or Tierney as they are better as wing backs. Hope it get sorted out in January.

Regarding Spain/Catalonia. It’s funny how the Old Left despise self-determination and home rule because they say they hate ‘nationalism’ yet that leaves them forcing us to choose between Big State Nationalism (Spain, Russia, Imperial Britain, etc) and the desire of every connected people on earth simply to govern themselves, a useful and mostly beneficial small nationalism that Ho Chi Minh knew all about.
No way is an independent Scotland going to behave like England, Spain, Russia or the USA! Lenin hoped that the small nations of Britain, in seeking Home Rule, would finish off British Imperialism once and for all. It hasn’t happened yet. It was good enough for John MacLean, Keir Hardie and James Connolly but not good enough for Sarwar, Gordon Brown, Alistair Darling and Jeremy Corbyn! I don’t like the idea of my grandchildren going off to fight for the Malvinas or Gibraltar but that’s what ‘internationalism’ means to the Westminster left.
vs. the Hibees our team was tired after an historic win. Brendan will find some way we can compete both domestically and in Europe without these glitches. Even so, if and when we lose it will be down to the poor ‘refereeing’ we all witnessed on Saturday. James Forrest didn’t dive when he was booked and possibly nearly dived when he wasn’t booked! Efe held Sinclair back two times (clearly on camera) We should get the penalty and win 3-2 but…
Gordon is still the finest shot stopper we have had in some long time even if many believe he isn’t the complete goalie yet.
After the break, the Sheep play away to Hibs and then to Ibrox.
Our best 11 (when fit) are:
Gordon
Lustig/Simunovic/Boyata/Tierney
Brown/Ntcham
Roberts/McGregor/Sinclair
Griffiths
Dembele needs match time in order to get his fitness levels up to last year.
We have a good subs bench.
Let the good times roll! Good health to all!

In all the latter cases, the gap between the haves and the have nots is growing. Unless that is addressed, the road ahead will be bumpy.

Slightly deflated by the result however, one of us was managing the other team so it takes the edge off a wee bit, we were not in the running, but still raised it to draw and if the ref played by the rules and brought it back as there was not an advantage to be had it could have been a win, collum is such a wee dick….

Besides the good save from Gordon,if he needs to think too long it goes straight to the opposition.

As I seen against Hibs,if you`re going to spend 80 minutes of the game passing the ball around your own defense,a draw is a good result.

Great game at the weekend, only Gollum spoiled it.
After UCL the team does struggle but that is to be expected, also Broonie and Armstrong were missed, Ntcham was again poor. McGinn looks a prospect and might be a good New Year aquisition. Would love to see the Hibees get second spot, it would really upset the knuckledraggers.

It is hard to decide on whether Collum is biased or just incompetent. The real issue here is that no matter which is the reality, nothing will be done about.

For me, I am in the incompetent camp. He appears to be fatally flawed in that he lets his emotions over rule his observations. Probably he had decided that Forrest was a diver before the game and looked to confirm this on the park. Not to take consistent action when the same situation unfolded again, shows his incompetence.

Awarding Hibs an advantage and pulling the play back several moves later, is another example. Finally, his handling of the “penalty” and his later explanation, are the final proofs.

His problems are profound and will never be cured. Ralph is correct. He is not fit for purpose. It would interesting to see the fourth official’s report! He does not have to hold back….this is his last season.

The refereeing department of the SFA join with their illustrious brothers in the governing and the overview of Scottish fitba. as being not fit for purpose. The refs. are an enigma, i.e. Madden and Thomson have recently had good games, in that they are allowing the games to flow and by not allowing rough tackles to slow the game down
Collum is not an enigma, he is just shite at refereeing, who could possibly look into those watery eyes and see what he sees.

I think as the season continues Celtic will grow is strength. We have a deeper squad and more talent than the other teams in the SPL. Aberdeen run hot and cold and Hibs lack the strength in depth. Sevco are basically Pish, so I see celtic pulling away around November/December. I agree with others on here about the ineptitude of Willie Collum. It was on show for all to see on Saturday. Question is will it be addressed? Based on previous piss poor referring performances probably not. The SFA are so bad it really is hard to believe.

Collum taught R.E. at a Catholic Secondary school. To get on in his chosen profession you have to be seen to anti- Celtic. He had a poor game on Saturday and has previous against us.
I was more worried about Edouard (not helped by Dembele0 He was slow, his touch was poor as was his passing and willingness to run channels or even make a nuisance of himself. He was so worryingly poor I forgot to keep up my Johnny Hayes watch. Better again from him and he set Odsonne up a peach where he should have scored. To accommodate changes, Hayes played left back for the whole second half and whilst being under the cosh on the ground by being double teamed, wasn’t beaten once in the air (he can really jump!) Moreover, he never stopped trying from the first til the last minute. Calm down with the talk of McGinn, he wasn’t that good and possibly Gordon should have palmed the second over the bar.
Anyone know if Fergus was at the game ? No mention.

No one needs to ” calm down ” with talk of John McGinn, he is a very good young Scottish player.

Rebus67

Reply to  SteveNaive

Steve,

Do you mean Dembele or edouard did not run the channels or did not seem that interested?
I thought Dembele was showing all the signs of a player who had been out for a while. Perhaps he is also a victim of his own PR? Early days to draw conclusions, tho.
Edouard? Again early days to form conclusions but on the positive he has pace to spare and looks a strong lad….a natural athlete. On the negative he lacks confidence and cannot get the mechanics right on shooting. Whether these can be fixed, who knows. BR I suspect!
It is concerning, especially since Moult could have been obtained for the same fee as Edouard’s loan. Not a world beater but a solid goal scorer in the SPL.

Hayes? He was excellent in defence but I do not think he will make it as a winger for us. Pity.

Steve, I for one do not base my judgement on McGinn on just one game, he has trodden a path similar to Browns, he is a good young player and Scottish International player and over many games has shown his talent. For me the fact that he is Celtic embedded means that he would go the extra yard for us. Not saying he is a World class player just that he is a good player and will be within Celtics price range and that Brendan has mentioned him and admires his play.
