Celtic Diary Wednesday September 27: Show Some Muscle In Brussels

Whilst not exactly the defining game in the European campaign, tonights clash with anderlecht will go a long way to deciding if there is to be European football after Christmas.

Anderlecht seem to be looking at it that way, they’re paying their players a 40,000 euro bonus if they win. If they pay it in euros and the players hang on to it for a bit that could soon be worth about £100,000.

Will Celtic pay a similar bonus ?

Manager Brendan Rodgers explained why not…

“At this level, it’s for a love of football and love of the game – for the spirit of the game and to perform,”

“If you get the result, there is a consequence for that and for Anderlecht that seems quite nice! We shall see [if it motivates them]. It’s clear they’ve had a difficult start to the
season. They are a club with a great history but they have changed their coach, which is unfortunate.

“At this level, the resources and finances that you get if you progress can be worth it. But I don’t think, for most footballers, it [money] is a consequence of playing well. There are not so many who go into a game and think that’s why they want to win.

“It’s absolutely about prestige as well. Over the course of the next few years, that’s really what we want. We want the name of Celtic, and the representation of Scotland to go as far as we possibly can. We know how difficult it is but that shouldn’t stop us looking to fight for that. So that’s something we want to be able to do.

“If we can carry the team and carry the club into those latter stages then, of course, there are many other benefits from that.”

It is about spirit and so on, and the team need to regain their own spirit after the drubbing from PSG.

“Our spirit is very strong,”

“We’ve created that over the last 15 months, confidence is an effect of winning games regularly. Every game we play is a pressure game because we put that pressure on ourselves, but pressure also comes with playing for a
prestige club such as Celtic.

“Playing at home is an advantage, but we also enjoy playing away because we are given a wee bit more space. We can control the ball, be good in possession and we also have pace on the counter attack to trouble the opposition.”

Maybe there’s a clue there in how the team will line up tonight.

Rodgers has put the PSG game behind him, and hopefully so have the players. They were, for the second year in a row, caught out by the quality of the opposition, and didn’t seem to want to adapt.

There were signs that the players had regained a little spirit, but it could also be argued that PSg were far enough ahead to take it easy by then.

But its in the past now, and Rodgers agrees..

“I think games like the PSG one are little reality checks,”

“That’s what it’s like at this level. I always tend to think there is learning in every situation. It’s about facing problems you want to solve afterwards.

“Obviously, they’re very humbling experiences them, for players. It’s boys who are used to winning and when you come up against that level of play at the very top level of the game then it’s tough and it’s humbling.

“But we’ve got an honest group. They’ve got spirit and we feel they’ll improve over the course of the campaign. We saw that last year too. We’ll do everything we can to fight for the result, whoever we play.”

“I think that game was one where it was understandable. We all looked at that one, we didn’t plan and focus on being that timid in the game. But this is a level where you are learning all the time.

“Just because we have been on the run we’ve been on for the last 15 months or so doesn’t mean you’re not susceptible to not good performances.

“I think the players in terms of what they have given the club and the nation in terms of performance has been outstanding, but every now and then against the top players in world football they might just miss it.”

How does he go about tonights game  then ?

The back four picks itself, now that its returned to full strength.

Brown and Ntcham as the two protectors, the Frenchman didn’t feature at Ibrox, and as the clubs most expensive signing in ten years, it could be that he was rested for the big game.

Same with James Forrest. He came on to stretch his legs, but didn’t start. He’s been scoring goals at home and in Europe on a regular basis and should be preferred to Patrick Roberts, who is flattering to deceive so far since his return.

but he’s a more than useful substitute.

That leaves Sinclair on the other flank, and either Armstrong, Rogic or MacGregor in the number ten role.

Has to be MacGregor for me. He offers more to the team, and the other two tend to flit in and out of games.

With MacGregor on the field, the middle to forward linking is far superior, as Rogic tends to run down blind alleys and Armstrong isn’t quite as quick at spotting the pass.

That leaves either Griffiths or Dembele up front, and whilst I’d usually prefer Griffiths, perhaps Dembele would be the better option here as he can hold the ball up better, and is more of a physical presence. At least, I’d give him the first hour, and then let Griffiths loose on a tiring defence.

Now you might -probably quite rightly-consider the above musings the mere ramblings of a fan with a laptop.

But there is evidence that puts me at least on a par with the manager when it comes to ,well, sussing out other teams….

“This is the game that both teams will be looking at to have a realistic chance of playing in Europe after Christmas. Anderlecht will see this as a chance to turn around their fortunes.

“Their interim manager has changed their system twice in two games so it will be interesting to see how it works this time. At this level, chances aren’t as abundant, so it’s about being efficient with the  opportunities we create, as well as being defensively strong. Games like the PSG one are reality checks but there is learning in every situation. Even after the game against Rangers on Saturday we reflected on it and looked at things we could have done better and it was the same against PSG.

“Obviously, they’re very humbling experiences but we’ve got an honest group. They’ll improve over the course of the campaign.

“We saw that last year. We’ll do everything we can to fight for the result. If you are solely looking at the games against Anderlecht, then to get a win or a draw here – and the other games in the group map out as people think – then that leaves you with a home game against  Anderlecht to try and progress. You’d be happy with that.

“They reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League, so they are still a very tough opponent. They are no mugs.”

From yesterdays Diary…

Anderlecht are no mugs.

Clearly that makes me at least the equal of Rodgers when it comes to football.

A lot will depend on tonights referee, and his supporting acts.

What do we know about him ?

Well, nothing, so lets ask someone who does… from Futnsoccer

Could this UEFA decision for the Celtic-Anderlecht game prove grave?

33-year-old Spaniard Jesus Gil Manzano, who is yet to officiate a Champions League fixture, will be blowing the whistle when the Hoops play with the Belgian side.

Manzano isn’t in anyway a rookie referee, as he’s in his 4th season handling games on the continental level and has overseen a lot of La Liga games.

He took charge of 3 Europa League group matches last season, and also a round of 32 clash between Borussia Monchengladbach and Fiorentina.

Manzano has taken charge of 2 El-Clasicos in his 16-year refereeing career, but how he fares on the biggest stage of club football remains to be seen.

Image result for jesus gil manzano

He’s known to be a bit free with the yellow cards, the red cards and the unusual step of poking players in the eye when they argue.

Do we do predictions ?

Yeah, why not.

1-1.

Which isn’t bad but I’m hoping for a win based purely on the fact that we performed better away from home last year than we did at Fortress Parkhead, where Celtic haven’t won a UCL group game since 2013.

Anything else going on ?

Oh..

Our recent Armed Forces Day at Ibrox raised £4,837 for our Armed Forces Partnership with &

which works out at just under 10p per fan.

Next time they should consider just raffling the flag.

The wee bits and bobs we have been hearing about trouble and strife at Ibrox has suddenly hit the mainstream…

Thing is, given the managers er, clarity, at press conferences, how will they know what is upsetting him. They probably think the car park needs tidying up or something.

Yeah, I just nod and smile when I haven’t got a clue what someones going on about as well.

Back to the good guys and all we ask is that they give it their best shot tonight.

Anderlecht thoughts: Ralph, your lineup is perfect for me. I’m nervous about the refereeing. We’ve been fucked over so many times in Europe by poor reffing, especially away from home. I want a level playing field, where only football decides not yellow and red cards. This might be our defining CL match because Fortress Paradise seems to be only a memory in the CL just now. I also think Dembele might be our man to start. More aerial strength and I like the idea of a fresh Griffiths coming on when defender’s legs are tired.
Ntcham is also the right man to be alongside Broonie.
I’ll be watching nervously and have no idea what to expect. My wife doesn’t care about football but she often brings good luck if I can get her to watch some of the match (on BT)
This team is getting better and better and is a joy to watch. I think Sinclair is saving up for a real blinder and maybe that’s where our victory will come from?
Pedro? The Huns don’t really do ‘foreigner’ very well (that requires tolerance and being open-minded)so I think he won’t last the season. They’ll bring in McLeish who will then have to get rid of Pedro’s foreign (Cafflik) contingent and start all over again, building his team around Kenny Misser!
And Ralph, your energy and dedication to this Forum is greatly appreciated. My life has shrunk quite a bit so Etims is one of my enjoyable daily contacts with the outside world. Keep up the excellent work my son!
Predictions? Er, um, 1-1 but I would like a victory to take back home to Parkhead.

Brilliant Diary, as always, Ralph.
No doubt the Anderlecht games look key to us playing in Europe after Christmas. As someone mentioned, and I agree, it’s all about us going out and playing our own game; we’ve got the squad, we’ve got the manager. A top performance from our Bhoys with a decent ref. and I fancy we can win it. I expect goals so I’ll go for us by 3-2. Encouraging to read Brendan’s keeping a close eye on them as he’s mentioned they’ve changed set-up twice in the short time their interim manager’s been there. IMO,as well as having the top talent, PSG hit a purple patch against us; nobody, but nobody would have lived with their 1st half performance as EVERYTHING they tried came off. That’s football; but we’re well capable of getting results against very good teams and I just hope we prove that tonight.
Good to see Mike’s post, where’s Charlie S? Get back on!

I am hoping for a good result tonight. It will define where were are in European terms. Frankly, at the moment we are a Europa team not a CL team. The PSG result showed that. We have lost nine goals in our last two European games. That says a lot. Anderlecht are on the rebound with their new coach. If we start well we can get a good result which would be a draw.
The team is improving but we are only in the second year of a process.

Rebus,

“Frankly, at the moment we are a Europa team not a CL team”

Sorry, but to borrow a response from another…”pish”.

We may not at the moment be at the peak of European football with those funded by the lurking pyrranha of TV, the delusional ego of Qatari oil dollars or living off the scraps from pre-enlightenment Spanish royalty but we are a Champions League team by merit, by results and by right.

More than that, we are there on the most fundamental of foundations; a support who do exactly that…support through presence, money, singing or heartfelt ambition to hack upwards through the branches to the top of the tree and perhaps fall off …but then to remove the thorns of disappointment and start that climb again.

It might take a hundred years for random fate to materialise as inevitable destiny, but until then The Europa league and its descendants will be no more than a cushion or safety net to rebound from as we aim for the dizzy heights again on a bandwagon of song fuelled by unquenchable smiles, heartache and dreams.

We, the support with all its noise, colour, reputation and imagination allied in indestructible concert with our club, legend, myth, reality and football ambition as one, are not just a Champions League club, we are the archetypal model which makes even the price of a half time super meal deal a small sacrifice at the altar of Tiocfaidh at la.

We may end up playing in it, but Europa League team…naw! Just passing through on our way to bigger things.

Hail hail

Matt,

A great post! Wish I had made it! All of what you say is true. Celtic illustrate the heart and the soul of football. Our crowds should be worth more as they indicate true fan loyalty but sadly, money talks. TV cash has skewed the balance of power. Like North American pro sports, football has become the plaything of large organisations and true billionaires. PSG and the big three in Spain are examples of it. They dominate and will continue to dominate the CL. We are in the CL again and our hopes are to finish in the top two places in our group but the gulf is such that the reality is we are fighting for third. So are Anderlecht. So are many other teams from the non-big leagues. Occasionally these teams will fight to cause an upset but, in general, the better resources teams will win.

I share your hope and loyalty but tonight will be a fight between my heart and my head.

I am still reeling from your summary of my rubbish!

Good team but I’d start Armstrong or McGregor in place of Rogic. Any of the choices have pluses and minuses. Rogic can score and make killer passes; Armstrong and McG are in the game more consistently and hence forward flow is better.

Movement and pace are just two attributes of this current Celtic side, if we keep things solid at the back then we possess the midfield attacking players to do damage upfield.
Two elements of our play concern me at times though, one is our ability to gift unenforced possession away, annoying as fuck.
The second is Dedryck Boyata being left to distribute the ball from the back into midfield, i don’t think it’s his game, he isn’t confortable in possession.
While i’ll support him as long as he is a Celt, i do feel we need a central defender who is naturally comfortable on the ball, ala Virgil Van Dijk.

BJF,

It is not really a row just a difference of perspectives. Anderlecht is a team that given our resources, we could beat. Two years ago, I would have said we had no chance of beating them away, but probably could get a result at home. Now I think there is a chance we can get a good result. I suspect that the Germans will top the group and that neither Anderlecht nor us will take any points from the top two. Although, we tend to do well against German teams so we may get a point vs BM. At least a draw tonight and we have a very good chance of seeing European football beyond Xmas.

Europa Youth

Half time Anderlecht 0 Celtic 2.

Cracking goals from Johnston and Hendry on 2 and 11 mins. First a long but targeted through ball from defence for Johnston to gather, take about 40 yards and slide past the keeper’s left but flailing dive into the corner.

And what a cracking intricate move, pass, move and pass to leave the Belgium defence wondering how many players Celtic had as the ball was slipped through to Hendry to score with a sublime Dalgliesesque chip from the right corner of the six yard box again over the forlorn body of the keeper into the opposite side of the net.

Some great defensive work from both teams with an occasional lapse into a Saturday Sauchiehall street stagger and a drunken Gallowgate assault.

First time Ive seen Celtic looking bigger and more athletic than the opposition.

Europa Youth Second half

What a second half of chances made, missed , saved and ‘what the feck was that ref?’

Anderlecht battered the first 10 minutes as though someone had replaced their pound shop batteries wae Duracell, and came at the Celtic defence like white walkers determined to gorge themselves on the Night Watch.

But Celtic’s defence, discipline and shape held, ultimately providing the launching pad for another of those cut, thrust, go back five times and then cut, thrust and this time slice through with some marvelous silky football culminating in one, two, shot, save and a ‘if only’ head held in hands.

Anderlecht responded with a great [penetrating run that produced a similar shot and save at the Celtic end. Mind you it would have been even better if the ball hadn’t originally been 2ft over the shy line, which went unnoticed by a linesman who was too busy picking his nose and wiping it on his flag…a habit that is all too prevalent in modern day football.

And then as sixty five minutes appeared on the top left hand of my Samsung curved television, in a move reminiscent of the pinball wizard, the ball ricocheted off the shins, erses, knees and heads of about 12 players in the Celtic box before rolling to the knackered and prostrate Anderlecht winger who had still some battery juice left and who with a nervous twitch of his leg deflected the bruised and battered ball into the pokey to make it 2-1.

With Celtic, undercover of a couple of substitutions taking the opportunity to replenish with some energy drinks the battle for dominance moved into the middle third of the park and the name of the game became…”Attrition”

Pretty much up to then Celtic had been using their physical presence in a purely football sense with only the occasional reminder to the opposition not to ‘feckin mess wae us..
But now it was clearly time to deal with some liberties.

Anderlecht who had spent a lot of time taking swipes at the ‘big bhoys’ on the assumption that the ‘big bhoys’ wouldn’t hit them back, suddenly found their arse, faces and ankles becoming acquainted with dirt, turf and slightly late ITD’s (Improvised Tackling Devices.)

As the second hand swept toward the 90min + 4 finito benito mark, Celtic of course triggered the customary panics by deciding to drop back to the edge of the box and allow Anderlecht to cross, shoot, header, and generally throw themselves to the ground in an attempt to get their socks dirty and justify the woman-who-does having to wash them.

All in all a good competitive match with Celtic delighted at the win and Anderlecht lads content with learning a couple of words of the Glasgow patois….Malky and chib.

Although the wee guy on their right wing, with a bandage on his right hand (I think…I can’t remember but I’ve a fifty fifty chance of being right), he got right on my tits. He spent the whole game falling down, saying ouch and looking as if he was going to burst into tears because his hand was sore. He was obviously in the team because his dad drives the bus or something,

2-1 to the Hoops

Great game and result by the Bhoys, but last few minutes were dire.
All the crap about Celtic being a Europa team, the draw has been in not been kind to us in the Champions League, with top drawer teams. Look at some of the other groups, teams in hat we could beat.
With a bit of luck we should make Pot 3 next year, just failed this year.
If you think PSG, Bayern, and Barca would not turnover some of the EPL you do not know football.
The team were caught short against Barca at the start last year, but all the other results were good, we were unfortunate not to beat Man City on both meetings.
If you lead the trash they only write crap about Celtic, the team should do the same as the boys tonight. Anderlecht will be chasing the game to win their bonus allowing us to break on them.

Difficult to watch this. Passing is v poor and Anderlecht happy to wait for us to give them the ball. Brown and Simunovic looking strong but Ncham looking lost and Boyata worries me
