Celtic Diary Saturday September 9: Celts Slip Back Into The Groove

The green and slightly darker green hoops got back to league action last night at Hamilton, with new face Odsonne Edouard leading the line, assisted by new old face Patrick Roberts.

Everything fell into place with a 4-1 win, though the game was over by half time as Stuart Armstrong reminded everyone what he could do with his opener, and Scott Sinclair added to his already impressive goal tally with a double before half time.

Odsonne Edouard opened his account, after a strong run and a one two allowed him to firew off a quick shot that was too strong and low for the keeper to hold, and that put a smile back on our faces.

Then Craig Gordon noticed his defence was marking each other and there was a man free. He flung himself into the space, but missed the man and the ball, thus allowing those amongst us who like a moan to have something to moan about.

So, everybody’s happy then.

Except Craig Gordon, who might want to avoid twitter for a while.

The defence had switched off, the game was over, and whilst that kind of error will be punished at a higher level, its not the end of the world, and there’s little doubt the coaches will be working on avoiding a repeat.

Brendan Rodgers is happy, not least with new bhoy Edouard..

“I was very impressed with his performance. His running ability, his speed, power and profile suits how we play. He’s very hungry and his view of the game was exceptional.

“His link up play is great and he wants to run in behind which is very important in my team, and he wants to score goals.

“I think Edouard was already up to speed when he arrived. He has all the physical attributes and qualities that I want, hence why we stick him in.

“The biggest complement he got tonight was a massive round of applause from the players and staff in the changing room. It’s been a great start to his Celtic career.”

He does look like he has a lot to offer, there were a couple of times defenders bounced off him, and he was full of running.

More importantly, he has a knack of being in the right place at the right time. Sure, its only his first start, but I’m certain we’ll hear more of him over the next couple of years.

Then Rodgers spoke of the return of the Roberts…

“It’s great to have Paddy back,”

“I can see how happy he is to be back. He knows the systems that we play and he can fit into them very well. I though him and James Forrest on right side were very good.

“Pat was just needing some game time. We’ve just got to manage that, he’s had upwards of 70 minutes there so that gives him good preparation for the game on Tuesday.”

Rodgers was a little relieved that everything went to plan, and that the players returned to duty and picked up where they left off.

Tonight was a big game for us, this was our biggest game and we have to take confidence from that,”

“We leave here having a great confidence boost. We made the game look very simple tonight but we were working very hard with constant movement and pressing.

“The scoreline always gives you that confidence and now we go on to take on one of the best teams on the planet and that’s going to be a really exciting game for us.”

That’ll be Paris St Germain.

They were in action last night, and beat Metz 5-1, although their opponents were down to ten men.

With eleven it was 1-1.

The PSG line up might worry some of you, but I’ve never heard of at least half of them, and so therefore they have some weaknesses.

And they all appear to be at the back.

Also, they’ve got a Julian, an Adrien and an Alphonse, who sound like they should be playing croquet, or setting fire to poor people.

And isn’t the Areola something to do with boobies ?

We’ve nothing to worry about.

I can’t shake this idea that they are a kind of showbiz eleven…

You don’t see us making so much fuss about loan signings.

The row over who leaked what to who took a few twists and turns yesterday.

The diary simply talked through a few possibilities and the reasoning behind why each may or may not have leaked it.

CQN denied it was Lawwell, and  pointed the finger at Daryl Broadfoot, who used to work at the SFa but is now with a PR firm.

The John James site, pausing only to nick auldheids comment from a site whose readers aren’t allowed to comment on his, claimed it was Broadfoot, which of course meant that Broadfoot almost certainly was innocent.

Something Broadfoot himself later pointed out.

Well, it is a bit of a mystery, isn’t it ?

Ewing Graham, the Times hack who published the letter, provided us with the biggest mystery of all.

How could another SMSM hack end up at the prestigious London newspaper ?

This is Ewing Grahame, recounted here by a poster on RangersMedia.. ( so its probably bollocks )

Back in 2003, Ewing Grahame was sacked by the Herald for his disgraceful behaviour during Rangers away visit to Stutghart in the CL. Simply, he got pyshed and fell asleep in the press box during the game. He woke up and composed a fictional report and promptly fell asleep again. He missed the official party transport back to the airport and held up the team plane. The aircraft missed it’s slot and was 3 hours late in taking off because of Grahame’s indiscipline.

If its true, this guy is a hero. No wonder he got drunk if he was forced to watch Rangers for a living. I suspect the story to be a lie, however, as surely no airplane ever waited for a passenger to turn up ?

So, why the bitterness towards him from the peepil ?

Ah..something he wrote in the Telegraph a few years ago.. ( 20 nov 2012 )

The institution formerly known as Rangers Football Club has posthumously won its appeal against the tax bill presented to them in regard to its use of Employee Benefit Trusts (from 2001-10) during the tenure of former owner Sir David Murray.

However, there remain more questions than answers regarding the EBT issue and Tuesday’s result, which Murray regards as vindication of his policy, may yet prove to be a Pyrrhic victory.

For one thing, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs is almost certain to appeal against the decision. For another, the independent investigation set up by the Scottish Premier League to examine alleged contractual improprieties on behalf of the former club has yet to meet.

The new club owned by the aggregation of investors fronted by Charles Green, agreed to accept any penalties imposed on the old Rangers by the footballing authorities as part of the deal which allowed them to transfer the former club’s membership of the Scottish Football Association to the newco in July.

Without that membership, Green’s Light Blues would have been unable to play even challenge matches. Consequently, the Phoenix club accepted the transfer embargo which had been handed down during Craig Whyte’s brief and calamitous reign for bringing the game into disrepute.

However, there remains the matter of the SPL’s independent investigation (chaired by Lord Nimmo Smith) into what may prove to have been an improper registration of players during Murray’s reign.

And if you think that upset the delicate Ibrox flowers…

If, as Murray has alleged all along, the club were innocent and adhering to the letter of the law as regards the EBTs, then why did he sell the club to the discredited venture capitalist Whyte for just £1 in May 2011?

Equally, if there was nothing to fear from the FTTT’s findings, why did Whyte fail to pay the income tax and VAT collected during his reign, a course of action which could have had no other outcome than to plunge Rangers into administration, which duly happened on Feb 14?

Given that the debts racked up by Whyte to HMRC were relatively slight in comparison to the estimates attributed to the Big Tax Case, why didn’t he simply sell some of his international stars during the January transfer window?

Instead, Nikica Jelavic was the only player transferred. If Whyte had elected to offload a few more of the club’s biggest names then administration, never mind liquidation, could have been avoided and the Glasgow giants would still be in the SPL with an unbroken history.

I wonder…no, it’s just too wild…but did Grahame solicit the letter himself as part of an ongoing investigation ?

Have we found a serious journalist who wants to do some proper, grown up journalistic work ?

If so, and if he’s reading this, there’s a bucket load of other stuff to help him with his enquiries.

He knows where we are.

Something someone has said has rattled the cages at the SFA…remember the fear of them clipping our wings ?

It’s started… ( Daily Mail )

SFA poised to slash lucrative Scottish Cup cash windfalls to clubs selected for live televised games

  • Cup ties shown live by Sky or BBC Scotland pay £82,500 to each side involved
  • Clubs have voted in large numbers to cut the payment for televised teams
  • The new cash bonus will now fall to £32,500 per team from this campaign
  • Celtic against the move saying they will lose up to £250,000 per year in revenue

Celtic and other Premiership sides are opposed to the move, however, with the Parkhead club facing a potential loss of up to £250,000 a year in broadcasting revenue.

Put forward by the SFA, the new cash arrangement aims to end the lottery of lower league clubs earning more from one live televised game in an early round of the cup than some sides earn from going all the way to the semis.

Payments for coverage of cup ties are designed to compensate clubs for lower crowds caused by featuring live on television.

Last season, League one Albion Rovers hit the jackpot when they landed a sold-out home tie with champions Celtic.

Concerned that clubs like Rovers gain an unfair financial advantage over league rivals at the behest of TV executives, the SFA wrote to member clubs proposing a system where clubs playing live games receive less than half the current sum, with more cash going to clubs who advance to the latter stages.

Sportsmail understands that 90 per cent of the member clubs voted in favour.

Research conducted by the governing body shows that 68 per cent of Scotland’s professional clubs will benefit or suffer no loss from the changes.

Amongst those who fear losing money are cup holders Celtic. Last season all five of their cup games were shown live. Two of the five, against Inverness and St Mirren, were at home and attracted lower-than-average crowds of under 28,000.

Arguing that they create much of the value for broadcasters in showing cup games, Celtic believe they should be compensated for lower crowds when home cup games are screened live. Under the new plans, the Parkhead club could lose up to £250,000 in broadcasting cash a season.

Insisting the new blueprint has broad popular support, however, the SFA believe a new bonus system will see more money going to the clubs who reach the quarter and semi final stages of the competition and remove the element of chance.

‘Some clubs actually wanted more change,’ a source told Sportsmail. ‘Others wanted higher TV payments.

‘The aim of this is to address a system where football finances feel like they are at the whim of TV executives.’

Did you see that bot about unfair advantages ? And the comment on tv dictating to clubs…?

Astonishing.

It’ll be sharing home gates next…to help clubs who can’t afford  or just refuse to spend on their grounds…

With this idea in the pipeline, its little wonder the club have decided to up the ante against the SFA, if , indeed it was the club…

Meanwhile, there have been rumours that Celtic are to swoop for a long standing Ibrox legend, just for giggles, which actually makes sense, as he’s about the only one who could be found a position at Celtic Park, giving the kids something to chuck bottles at.

Well, we can afford it..

Celtic’s market value has risen by almost £50million in the last six months thanks to continued success on the park.

The Ladbrokes Premiership champions also saw a significant rise in their share price following qualification to the Champions League group stages for the second season running. London Stock Exchange figures show the club to be worth over £173million, up from £125million, while the share price currently sits at £1.29.

According to those figures, that makes my investment worth £1.29, but I’m going to hold on for a bit and see if i can squeeze a bit more for them.

We haven’t forgotten…

Etims Knob Of The Week

Alright, I had..

But then someone reminded me…

Image result for stewart milne aberdeen

Stewart Milne, the chairman of Aberdeen, seemingly has no idea what his clubs supporters are saying.

He wants everyone to move on from talk of reviews and justice and all that stuff.

“I have said it previously and I will say it again: there has been too much negativity in Scottish football for the last few years and it is not healthy for the game.

“Both the SPFL and Scottish FA engaged top-level QCs to give advice on the situations presented to them and dealt with by them. We now must focus our collective efforts on taking Scottish football forward and stop dwelling on the past.

“It is my wish that we all work together to make this happen. The current situation does nobody any favours.”

He isn’t doing himself any favours with talk like that.

But I’ll do him a favour…he can be this weeks..

On the PSG lineup last night I notice Alves,Silva and Verratti were missing from their squad.
That’s some seriously good talent in defence still to come back in.
Verratti is a player I have admired for a few years now he is a player who needs close attention when on the Park as most of their moves from deep come from his movement and distribution.
He’s one of those DMFs who always seem to find space no matter how crowded it gets in the MF and his head is constantly on the swivel picking out a pass.
He has had injury issues in the past couple of seasons on and off so mibees he’s a doubt given he never made their bench last night?
Di Maria is out as far as I know.

Having have had BT Sport for 3 years I get to watch French Football several times a week.
PSG for obvious reasons tend to feature quite heavily so I have watched them more than enough to have an insight into how they play.
Cavani has for example emerged out of the Ibrahimovic shadow a much improved and more confident player.
This is also where I first noticed a young Verratti emerging as one to watch.
He’s a terrific wee player with a great future ahead of him and it’s no surprise to me Barca have shown an interest in him.

Hope this reply is worthy of your undoubted greatness as a leading light in Nhs Celtic related.

Hello Rob, just saw your comments. Whilst I think Ralph’s mixture of new information on Celtic and his open and funny writing makes ETims a terrific read, I could hardly say Ralph was a Pal. I’ve met him once and we had a nice wee craic but children kept upsetting one of his two dogs and we had to call time much sooner than hoped. I’ll make no comment on Charlie S other than say I wish him no ill.
Now starting to get really excited about Tuesday and PSG. I think we are well capable of getting a result as long as we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot.

In interests of accuracy the JJ blog on Broadfoot was first I’d read on the subject. So it wasn’t picked up from SFM.

It rang true to my experience of Broadfoot iro the Traverso letter and a Guardian Article so I posted so on JJ.

I copied my comment elsewhere afterwards but regardless of who did leak the 2012 letter the comments about Broadfoot are based on the 2 instances quoted. The SFA never did clarify the STV publication re Traverso nor has that other unpublished letter been produced.
Had it existed it would have rendered Res12 unecessary. Events since have demonstrated otherwise.

A very nice win last night to prepare for our big game next week. We will need to be full or energy and at the top of our game to get some kind of result and I live in hope of that a win would be mercurial. Milne is a knob all right and is out of step with his paying customers who believe as we do that there should be a level playing field and those that break the rules should face the consequences of that.

http://www.celticfc.net/news/13207

IN the light of all information that has now become available, Celtic has been in correspondence with the Scottish Football Association in pursuit of the Club’s belief that an independent review should be commissioned to consider the events that led to the liquidation of Rangers Oldco and the governance issues arising from those events. This is exactly the same position as adopted by the SPFL board on behalf of all Scotland’s 42 professional clubs.
The Club believes that such a review is essential if a line is to be drawn under this whole affair. On that basis, Scottish football could learn lessons and move on. The Club considers, however, that failure to carry out a full review of these events and issues, which have been without precedent in Scottish football, would represent a failure in transparency, accountability and leadership.
Celtic was, therefore, disappointed to note that the Scottish Football Association board has confirmed that it does not intend to commission such a review. Throughout these processes, Celtic’s consistent objective has been to establish the full facts, which is surely the least that all stakeholders in Scottish football – including the supporters of all clubs – are entitled to, and to learn the appropriate lessons. That remains our position.
With the agreement of the Scottish FA, recent correspondence between the Club and the Scottish FA can be accessed using this link

Looks like the gunpowder is being loaded into the cannons 😉

That second page should clarify once and for all beyond any reasonable doubt that Lawwell and our Board want these matters dealt with openly and with transparency by an Independent body.

Damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t Peter Lawell. After much accusations that he and Celtic were “complicit” in the oldco shenanigans which have now been shown to be totally false and malicious. Seemed Celtic tried to address it several vtes through the years and now are pressing for real action. Time to say well done Peter Lawell and Celtic for pressing the case and for not being part of the dodgy deals being done around the oldco and newco. Maybe we can find it in ourselves to admit when we thought the worst the club did the right thing.

Age is no precursor to stupidity, for example Pensionerbhoy is the best poster on here, by far, so ageism is irrelevant.
A lot of posters on here automatically think that everything Lawwell and the board do is bad. They have been moaning for YEARS that Lawwell has been doing nothing, shafting the support and in bed with the SFA to the detriment of the club, that they have a selfish motive, when the reality is completely the opposite, as has been proved, yet again. btw that does not mean that I automatically agree with everything that they do, although it does give a certain kudos on here if you are anti board, not that i’m saying they are not deserving of it.
You do moan a lot though and Lawwell is an easy target.
The fact is that for once the board and the support are united against the bigots at the SFA and there hun friends, what happens next, my crystal balls are at the cleaners.
Do not call me auld again tho. it destroys my self image.

Celtics hands were tied by a long, drawn out legal case over the past 5 years.
You can’t just wade into these things swinging like a clown in a pub brawl ffs there are protocols and procedures that they have to abide by?
This way the slippery bastards who are implicated in this clusterfuck have no way out.
This is going to take time and persistence now from the Club and dare I say a degree of patience from the fan base.
Moaning yer arse off is not going to change a single thing btw it’s a pointless exercise.
Celtic didn’t cause this,Celtic was affected by this so please for the sake of the thing you all claim to love (I have my doubts with some) let the Club take this on with the might of our Legal Team.

What have we gained, is the knowledge that the board have actually been pro-active in the .. cheating years, also the fact that this issue has united the support and not the opposite. Its the knowledge that for many myself included that we would have lost all confidence in the club’s board and destroyed our faith in the beautiful game. We will always love Celtic its in our very DNA but if the board had done nothing then what was the point of supporting the club, supporting Scottish fitba.
It is hugely important to me and many others that the game is cleansed, this is only round two, but its a start.

Which is true to a certain extent, I am not praising them, because my only concern is Celtic, everything else except my family is irrelevant. I distrust this board but I am happy that they have been proactive in this most serious of issues. Regarding the Scott Brown incident last night, i think he did try to catch the Accies player in the face, there was no need for Scott to do that, if he get’s a ban for it he cannae blame anyone else bar himself.
We need you on the park Scott & i suggest this, if you do get a one or two game ban, maybe refuse to take your wage for tbe length of any ban?

You are thr Celtic captain son, act like it!

Of my 55 posts yesterday 39 were game related as the game was occurring seeing as there was no traffic on the site Bar Red bobbing in I thought I would post my thoughts on the game and try get convo going.
3 were Music related ,2 were to do with Formations next week and the rest basically thumbs up to some good posts.
I probably over did it but on a busy day when the site is bouncing it’s not so unusual to see some post in here 20-30 times without issue?
It would appear there are some fannies in here who want this site run their way?
As far as I am aware there is no limit set for posts only content?
So with hat I say Pog Mo Thoin

Caption – “Any of you boys able to drive”?

As we know from issues far more important than cheating in Scottish football (Bloody Sunday, Hillsborough, etc.) the true wheels of justice unfortunately take an eon to turn in this world. It could be another 5 years (copyright-David Bowie and Weered) before this matter is brought to a conclusion and then, and only then, can Scottish football ‘move forward’ as the hacks and knobs like Stewart Milne seem so keen on advocating we do.

Perfect preparation last night for the PSG game, although obviously not in the quality of the opposition. Delighted to see Paddy back where he belongs and Odsonne getting a full 90 minutes under his belt. Folk can talk about the might of the PSG attack but with Paddy, Scotty and Griff leading the line we are an attacking threat to anyone. Now, as for that defence….

BTW, I don’t wish to moan and be accused of being all ‘PC’ when it comes to posts on here but there have been a couple of recent posts I have viewed that are bang out of order. The resident crabbit steamer made an out of order racist ‘joke’ last night and as for Budgie’s entry in the caption competition, well just read it for yourselves.

I thought we were above and beyond all that shite. Can’t some folk fathom the fact that 75% of our goals last night were scored by players of African heritage? Deary me.

Equally, the creation of a Judicial Panel cab rank system has ensured independence of decision-making and a diversity of skills on each panel. These changes are based on two key principles:

Principle 1 – Economic and expeditious justice. The objective of the Protocol is to secure the Determination of disciplinary proceedings arising in respect of Association Football and that decisions are made economically and expeditiously in a fair manner.
Tribunals appointed from the Judicial Panel may impose reasonable procedural requirements on Parties to ensure that matters are dealt with economically and expeditiously.

Principle 2 – Decision making in a civil and footballing context. Whilst adhering to the general principles of fairness, and where appropriate, with consideration of underlying principles of law, those submitting to this Protocol acknowledge that these provisions relate to the Determination of matters arising from any breach of the Articles and/or the Disciplinary Rules, which govern the operation of Association Football in Scotland in a civil context, and that Tribunals may make appropriate Determinations in that civil and footballing context.

Lunny is the leak.

Ever notice how people who urge us to “move on” have something to hide, to move on from?
A few ideas on Tuesday night.
Good visiting teams can come unstuck at Celtic Park. Recently, Man Utd/AC Milan/Barcelona to name a few.
Possibilities:
If Celtic get a first goal, then PSG might feel the pressure.
Superstars are not often the best team players and football is a team game. We have a team with no superstars.
Neymar might finally get sent off for some of his shenanigans: simulation, off-the-ball antics. Being old school, I like to think cheats get punished sometimes.
Few teams with 10 men can compete with us for long, if our passing game is on.
Sinclair, Griff, Roberts are tricky to defend against, at any level. They are good players.
Over the years, we all know that we can beat anybody at home, with a bit of luck on our side.
Nobody expects us to beat PSG. Some odds are 13-1 against a Celtic victory!!! Arrogance comes before a fall.
PSG do not have the pedigree that Celtic has so we should respect them but not fear them. We have won the European Cup but they are trying to buy one.
I am:
fearful NO
respectful YES
realistic YES
Can we win? Probable NO Possible YES
This team learned a lot from las year’s CL, for good and bad.
Paradise will be rockin’
C’mon Bhoys, C’mon the Hoops.
Anything is possible and that also means good things are possible.
Like most lifelong Celtic fans, I know what defeat is and what diasppointment is but I also know the opposite. Just like life, eh?
Hail, hail

Devoy,
We are up against one of Europe’s best sides, but we CAN win, the support need to give Neymar ‘ The bird ‘ and Jozo needs to give Neymar the ‘ Kenny Miller ‘!

Celtic 3 PSG 2

Reply to  Monti

If Jozo does that tackle against Neymar he’d be straight up the tunnel no danger and probably banned for 6 games for causing the Football darling a lifetime of PTSD as a result?
It was and is probably one of the best timed tackles I’ve seen since Kevin Davies on Kolarov but I doubt a UEFA lickspittle would view it that way.

It was a superb ugh he has put several in previously further up the Paprk that have resulted in goals as well?
Noticeably one against Aberdeen last season where he slid in for a lose ball in a 50/50 no it broke through to Rogic I think?
He’s a very good defender just a shame he has eyes for a big money move because he’s the type you want to build a defence round I think?
Millers bones are still recovering 🙂

I said this a few days ago that if we approach this game with the same mentality as the Barca win under Lenny a result is not out of our reach or scope.
We proved last year that we had the players and ability to match Man City over two legs so I see no reason provided we turn up to a man and play to our best how we cannot get a result next week?
Yes the back line is an issue but as we proved with the back line v Barca even with players who were not on the same level we managed to keep them out whilst retaining a threat at the other end?
We have way more fire power than back then even with Dembele out we have pace and finishers across the point of attack.
No defender likes a forward with pace and we have this in abundance now.
Much has been said about the PSG attack and rightly so they can be lethal.
But as Barca proved last Season their defence can be got at and are not infallible.
It will take a monumental effort of course but we have been here before and raised our game to levels way above our averages.
One final thing.
Scott Brown has to screw the nut I feel and drop this pseudo hard man shite and concentrate on his game?
The kick out against the Hamilton player on Friday a prime example of this petulant streak he has that at times has cost us in the past?
The Neymar kick being the prime example as we can little afford histrionics against a quality outfit like PSG.
If we keep it tight and each man to a man performs at their best and is brave on the ball I think we can cause these prancing ponies a few problems.
Hopefully the luck of the Irish is with us too 😉

Thanks for the short post Brenda, pseudo hard man Brown? There isn’t a player in Scotland that enjoys playing against Broonie, wonder why? Kick out on Friday? If he had kicked out instead of a slight movement, the guy would have left the field on a stretcher……

You see what you want to see I prefer to look at it several times and watch his reaction.
Same as the Kick at Neymar in the Barca game it’s a flaw in his game that needs addressing.
No need for it we were cruising at that stage.
