Celtic Diary Wednesday September 6: SMSM In Policy Change ?

Football returns on Friday, Celtic travel to Hamilton for another game on an artificial pitch, against a side who have provided a surprise or two this season, in that they aren’t firmly anchored to the bottom of the league.

With a number of Celts involved in the World Cup in various countries around the world, its unlikely that the “first ” team will be on show, despite the proximity of the opening champions League game with Paris St Germain.

Tom Rogic has been in Australia, so he’ll be knackered, Scott Brown looked jaded for Scotland, you can always tell when he’s shattered, his passing is off, and Leigh Griffiths took a knock which leaves him doubtful.

And we’ve a busy month ahead..

We’ll have to wait and see, but the priority will be Tuesdays game, and others, such as Jozo Simunovic, who hates plastic pitches, fiddling wee games and playing for Celtic, might well have to explain that plastic pitches aren’t so bad and thus give the manager at least an hour to try to get him ready for the UCL game, which is on grass.

One thing to bear in mind is that as a support we’re all thinking of the UCL, imagine what the players are thinking. high levels of professionalism and concentration will be required at New Douglas Park, or we might find ourselves slipping further behind the early pacesetters of Aberdeen and St. Johnstone.

One player who must be wondering why he bothers is James Forrest.

If he’s tired of getting it in the neck from Celtic fans, at least he can seek relief in international football when a whole new set of supporters can vent their fury.

Scotland, who are nothing without the compliment of Celts introduced to give the team some pattern, spirit and ability, would have been winding down another pointless campaign had manager Gordon Strachan not opted to build his side around the Parkhead based Scots, however reluctantly, and yet the support, who wander around asking “Wha’s Like Us ? ” and singing a frankly ridiculous song about someone coming around a mountain on a deer ( I think thats what it is ) haven’t taken this into account and decided that Forrest is getting it, as they say.

Manager after manager picks Forrest, he scores important goals and never hides on the pitch.

If Scots fans , who wouldn’t know a player if he sat on their knee in the ground, don’t appreciate that,  they can, well, we know what they can do.

Scotland do have a chance, albeit a a slim one, of making the final stages of a tournament for the first time since the last century, no doubt they’ll find a way to make an arse of it, but its down to Forrest and his Celtic chums that they are in with a shout at all.

and those fans want to be careful with their criticism. Look at what one club did to the moaners..

Every goal since the 1-1 draw with Lithuania early in the campaign has either been scored or set up by a Celtic player. There were no Celtic players in that game.

Hey, remember this guy ?

Image result for stewart regan

It’s Stewart Regan, the Chief executive of the SFa, the organisation behind the repeated failure of the Scottish game at all levels, financial, organisational and moral.

He’s made an arse of himself again, after daring to venture into public to debate an issue over ticket prices for the Scotland Malta clash.

And Stewart, being in charge at the SFA, is an expert on spouting nonsense, so you’d think he’d be on solid ground here…

Could Regan be unaware of what goes on in his own department ? But he’s in charge, and any competent CEO would at least have an idea of product pricing…

Ah, the key word is competent.

He blustered a wee bit to cover his tracks, and appear to have a clue what he’s on about, but the damage had been done..

He then went on to say “rangers” were the same club, and said he’ll have an answer soon as to why they aren’t liable for any of the debts incurred before liquidation.

As far as I can see, there’s a ticket there that cost £36 to go to the game, however Regan wants to dress it up.

Marketing isn’t the SFA’s strong point, neither are public relations, neither is transparency.

Or honesty, or rule adherence, or anything really.

Especially marketing, as the Daily Record picked up on today.. from , apparently, an original tweet by Timomouse on twitter.

you can see why those behind the Scottish football tv deal shouldn’t be,er, behind the Scottish football tv deal..

This is a page of the marketing literature that is being peddled to potential buyers..

The firm who are behind this are MP and Silva, and one would be tempted to think that part of the deal, which lasts until 2023, may well be in breach of contract, as surely whoever signed it on behalf of the SFA/SPFL would have insisted on the company actively trying to sell the product.

Wouldn’t they ?

Well, that’s the angle in the Record story-one of several today which suggests their usual editor is on his jollies, have a look, they’re having a go at everyone- its weird and kind of unsettling…

The SPFL are set for crunch talks with international media partners MP & Silva over fears the rights holders are under-selling Scottish football – by using players such as Celtic flop Jo Inge Berget as poster boys for our game.

Record Sport understands league chief executive Neil Doncaster has concerns over the marketing of the game overseas with several key countries including the USA facing television blackouts.

The SPFL flogged the international TV rights to MP & Silva in a £20million nine-year deal – which runs until 2023 and allows the global media players to punt on to nations in an individual basis.

Scottish football gets beamed around the world as part of the contract – which guarantees £2.2m per year regardless of whether matches get shown.

But part of the big sell to foreign markets includes a 2016/17 promotional brochure which has outdated info and even lists the likes of Celtic misfit Berget as one of the big names for the league.

The Norwegian flop was offloaded the year before but other names branded star men include ex-St Mirren striker Steven Thomson – who was retired at the time – and Mickael Antonie Curier, who had long left Hamilton.

The SPFL are locked in to the deal but Doncaster will seek assurances the league is being properly pushed in key markets.

Ah, now he thinks of seeking assurances…after timomouse pointed it out to him.

how about he does the job he’s and follows up on contracts such as this ?

I’m quite sure a diligent journalist somewhere is already going through others as we speak.

Scottish football is currently shown in 150 countries around the globe – including live matches being shown in China and Australia – but there is no deal currently in place in America after broadcasters Fox pulled the plug at the end of their contract.

Record Sport also understands MP & Silva are losing money on the deal as the SPFL coverage has been punted as part of larger contracts involving other leagues such as the Belgian and Danish top divisions.

The media moguls also sell the rights to major leagues such as the EPL, Serie A and the Bundesliga, along with several other sports, as part of 10,000 hours of screen time around the globe.

A league spokesman said: “We understand MP & Silva’s negotiations with multiple partners are continuing and we remain in constant dialogue.”

What he really meant was “can someone dig me out their phone number ? ”

MP & Silva were last night unavailable to comment.

What they actually said was

“Have we got the SPFL contract ? ”

“No, Scotland ”

“Yes, they have got their own league. ”

“Really ? You’d think they’d try to sell it or something. See if they want to do a deal ”

Probably.

Back at the ranch, its Hamilton on Friday, and whilst Celtic fans will be eager to get back to real football, PSG will also be keen to have a look at what faces them next Tuesday.

In the run up to the game, I’m going to try to find examples of their perspective on the game, to give us a wider view.

As an example, here’s an alternative view of Celtic 2, Inter 1, from 1967..

Looking at PSG, we could face a problem with the height of attacker Neymar, who has piled on the inches since his move from Barcelona..

Here’s what they said about us…

During the international break, PSG.FR will give you a closer look at Paris Saint-Germain’s three UEFA Champions League group stage opponents. We start this European tour in Scotland, with Celtic FC, taking a look at this historic club with a legion of fervent green-clad supporters.

A NAME, A PEDIGREE
Watch out, there’s a monument of the footballing world on the horizon! In Scotland, and more specifically Glasgow, Celtic is a long-standing institution. Popular well beyong their borders, ‘The Bhoys’ have a trophy cabinet that would be the envy of the some of the continent’s biggest clubs: 16 Scottish League Cups, 37 Scottish Cups and 48 Scottish league titles! The Celts have shared domestic honours with arch-rivals Rangers over the years, but since 2012, Celtic’s domination has been complete and they are now the premier name in Scottish football. They have a Champions League title (1967) to their name – a title that made them the first British side to win it, and they have racked up 32 UEFA Champions League appearances. This coming campaign will be their tenth in Europe’s top club competition, but they will doubtless be looking to improve on a record that has seen them win just one of their last 14 Champions League matches (three draws, ten defeats) – against Ajax in October 2013.

THE STADIUM
Thiago Silva, Neymar Jr and co. are in for some goose bumps when they head to Scotland. Celtic Park, the club’s home since 1982, has seen generations of supporters build their legend. Inside its hallowed walls, fans scream their devotion to the club and its colours well before – and after – the 90 minutes of each match. This arena – known by the fans as ‘Paradise’ – is the home of the club’s beating heart and it will doubtless ring with a resounding rendition of ‘You’ll never walk alone’ when Paris come calling…

LUCKY CHARM?
Paris Saint-Germain have won their last two meetings with the Green side of Glasgow in European competition: in the Cup Winners’ Cup round of 16 in 1995-1996. The results: 1-0 at the Parc in the first leg and then a 3-0 win in Scotland with another clean sheet. That season, Djorkaeff, Rai and co. found a way to counter Celtic’s formidable fighting spirit in front of their fans before, six months later, lifting the sole European trophy in the club’s well-stocked cabinet. In fact, Paris are unbeaten in six matches against Scottish opposition in Europe (three wins, three draws) – and have kept five clean sheets in the process. A fortunate draw for Paris? We’ll find out soon enough…

PLAYER TO WATCH: SCOTT SINCLAIR
Marquinhos, Dani Alves and Kimpembe can already start studying one particular Celtic name: Scott Sinclair. At 28, the man who has moved around much of the United Kingdom (passing through Manchester City notably) has finally found his dream destination. In the space of just one season, he became the biggest players in the Scottish league, his 21 goals helping him to the title of Player of the Year. A formidable and consistent striker, Sinclair proved his pedigree by scoring five goals in six matches as the Scottish side won through two qualifying rounds and the play-offs for a group-stage berth in the 2017-2018 Champions League campaign.

Looking at this, and the image portrayed , at least on social media, of the club and their players, I can’t help but be reminded of this lot..

Image result for harlem globetrotters

And in that, we may have found the way to beat them….

Image result for rocky quotes life

You see, I think that lot think they’ve made it already. what they have in skill, we will counter with heart.

What they have in athletic ability , we will counter with passion.

And if we have to get up and go one more round, we will.

The diary hasn’t appeared for a couple of days, so we go back to Sunday for this picture..

I am on the middle of 4 “the season so far” pieces. So far I’ve looked at the goalkeeper and the defending.

It is a complete mystery to me why the club could not bring in at least one central defender in the transfer window.
Looking at our lack of defensive options was not unforseen, but it is a fucking joke, i am utterly frustrated with this situation.
The club has the money to bring in a defender and they didn’t do it, the team is weak at the back, it needed strengthening!

An entire transfer window & CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB chooses not to strengthen it’s defence?
Even with guaranteed CL income?

How can that be justified?

Naw,yurnae.

We have more than enough central defenders,to be honest. But it was clear during the window that we had trouble getting them onto the pitch.

Aye,we were unlucky with The SA Beckenbauer, but an equivalent of Kolo Toure would have been just the ticket.

So,in the absence of foresight, balance, hope, time for the hotline to God…

I absolutely hate being negative about anything Celtic, but i feel angry and frustrated because we are being negligent about a glaring defensive crisis!!
I’m not looking forward to the CL because i can see what is going to fucking happen here, we needed a signing or two in defence to give ourselves MORE of a chance!

Would have been good to get a quality defender in but, if they’re not available then, I wouldn’t take just anyone to make up numbers.
CL quality is rarely available on a free and anyone new would need time to settle anyway.
Yes, it might blow up in our faces but it might have anyway.
Or maybe Jozo and Erik will be fit and Boyata will return shortly but that still doesn’t guarantee it won’t go pear shaped.

There are no guarantees at this level anyway even if you blow £50m on a player.
What we need is a 2012 type performance and a good bit of the Irish luck.

Your fucking darling, Lawwell, is SUPPOSED to be a great negotiator. World class even, ha fucking ha. No transfer fee to pay, CL football to offer, the world renowned Hoops to offer and a class player who could help us tremendously (like Kolo did, ex. the Man City game).
If you can’t see sense, for fuck’s sake wind it in.
There’s no guarantee he would come but surely he should be asked. Probably good for 2-3 seasons whilst we re-organise our defence as Simunovic, Erik and more will be going. Think about it, FFS.

Lawwell has never been my darling.
Celtic is not run the way I would like it run but it is being run as well as it could be under the current circumstances.
Sure we would all love to bringing in £10m players wherever and whenever we can but the fact of the matter is (and it is a fact) we are hamstrung in a poorly funded League.
I would prefer to see us a fan owned and controlled Club who’s main priority is as good a side as we can afford but with an even emphasis on the charitable side which I feel has only had lip service paid to it.
Celtic fans will always be at odds with the Board as long as the Board is made up of Business men who put finances before Football and Charity?

IT wasn’t solely our centre defenders who were responsible for the four goals conceded to Astana . We defend as a team , unfortunately that didn’t happen in the Astana away game .
Far too often players were allowed time to pick a cross & get ball into box unhindered, far too often players were allowed to run at our centre defenders .
We must get back to our normal standards of stopping opposition playing the way they want . If not a new CB or two won’t stop the goals

To go into important CL games with 1 (at most) fit CBs and an untried CB pairing, when this was known or could be foreseen weeks ago, is gross mismanagement and anyone who thinks differently I’ve got a bag of shite to sell you.

Unfortunately it’s too late to do anything about this and we simply need to go into these games with these deficiencies in place and hope for the best and a kick up the arse to Lawwell that this is his bread and butter and not getting his feet under other talking shop tables that deliver fuck all for us.

The CF position is little better with Mousa out long term, Griff on the verge of injury every time he plays and I’m assuming the French guy is weeks away from match fitness.

If they were playing in our league they might have. That is my point. % years has nothing to do with what happened to them, it is to do with other clubs qualifying for the CL and the EL. That is about the last time someone other than Celtic qualified. I might be out by a year or two as I pay little attention to anyone else but Celtic. A lot of you can’t say the same! Or do you dispute that a measure of where the national game stands can be ascertained by looking at qualification to the EL of CL. What the fuck Is Griffs saying to me sir?

I sometimes wonder why they moan, we punch above our weight. Last year we played the best of the EPL, La Liga and th bundesleague. The same with Jamsie he is bad mouthed, but over the years has scored some great goals.
I remember when supporters lost it with Jock in 1968 wh n he lost to Kiev.

Best of EPL – no.

Best of La Liga – yes.

Best of Bundesliga – oh FFS, not even close and they sacked their manager during “their” great CL campaign.

We were expected to qualify for the group stages and finish bottom (with no victories and only 3 points).

What part of that is punching above our weight?

Who expected us to qualify?
I didn’t.
I hope we get 3rd spot this year though 😉
I think they call this Progrès?

Another day and another moan like fuck about our club. We wonder why players get it tight when they make a bad pass.
Im very pleased we have the manager we have.
Im extremley proud of the achievement of going a full season undefeated no matter how shite the league is according to some.
The domestic treble, champions league for the second succesive season, defeating very good opposition along the way.
No players sold, paddy back, the team intact.
Ntcham looks a great signing ticks all the boxes. Ralston Miller Ajer all progressing to first team squad. Hayes Benyu and a young french player who could be different class.Signed from psg.
Unfortunate that our main centre back target failed a medical,Injuries to Dembele Eric Jozo Boyata hasnt stopped us from qualifying for the champions league.4 key squad members not fit but we have remained on course for the season.
How the fuck did that happen !
But hey ho lets fuckin moan.

They got it tight chasing the game against St.Johnstone where experienced players couldn’t pass 10 yards . They don’t usually because most of us have known the intelligence of a passing game for years hence the praise for the manager bringing it back .It will happen again on Friday and is annoying after I thought Rodgers coached this out of them but I think it is more prevalent now because we are fitting square pegs into round holes. That puts more pressure on the midfield as that’s where most of the play is . All three opponents, even Anderlecht will make less unforced passing and gifting possession errors than us, even at 0-0 and over the period of the game. Why do you suppose that is ? Got a ticket for Friday but not taken CL. I hate sayin under my breath ‘don’t do that” and ‘ I feckin knew this would happen ‘

This site should carry a health warning. When reading ensure no proximity to sharp wrist tanning objects. In 63 years of following Celtic I have never encountered such a bunch of moaning tossers. Everyone’s a fukin expert. Perhaps someone could come up with the names of these CH’s we should have signed. We were unfortunate with Coetzee. Not even the geniuses on social media could have forecast that one. It must do the likes of Ajer, Gamboa etc the world of good for their confidence reading this shite. Lustig, Ajer, Simunovic, Tierney or Gamboa, Lustig, Simunovic, Tierney what the fuck is wrong with that. I can see BR getting pissed off with these clowns and leaving. He was bristling at some of the negativity after the St Johnstone game. Thank fuck for the GB.

Bob,
Hey you fuck off and when you get there, fuck off from there too!
Raising real concerns about the team is why we are all here……or can you not wait to see Neymar & Cavani up against Ajer?
Brendan & Lawwell have got it wrong, a defender should have been brought in..

This fucking attitude of ” the money is in the bank ” is completely fucked up….
Give the team a fucking chance….back the manager with a couple of quality players ffs

No moans from me either, Jimmybee. Why? Because I am getting old and losing some of my pals every day to cancer, strokes, heart attacks. It is only football and football is still just a game. Our manager is excellent, our team is improving and we have a lot of young players with greater potential. Believe it or no, it is possible to be critical and speak your piece and still have some belief. This team is playing the best football we’ve seen since Martin O’Neill was here. I have never played football in front of 50,000 but if I did I would like to hear cheering, singing voices that for 90 minutes at least support the players who give 100%. Younger men on this site: do you have kind and loving wives, partners, children? Are they healthy? Do you have a job or enough money? Food, warmth, shelter? Give over. Save your ammo for things that really matter, like shite politicians of all parties. And donate to the foodbanks…and sometimes, haud yer wheesht! And be careful because some of youse might be mistaken for rainbows or rays of sunshine! LOL
And yes bhoys, we will be getting a new centre back. Christoph Berra. You heard it here first…

calling all moaning bastards…what would this bunch ever do?

PETER SHILTON
Age: 66 Apps: 272 Trophies: 5
Then: Brian Clough bought Shilton from Stoke City for £250,000 in 1977 and declared he was worth 18 points a season. The goalkeeper stayed at Forest for six seasons and remains England’s most capped player with 125 appearances.

LARRY LLOYD
Age: 67 Apps: 215 Trophies: 6
Then: The former Liverpool centre half cost just £60,000 from Coventry aged 29 and became a rock in Forest’s defence. His signing-on ‘fee’ was a washing machine Clough stole from the City Ground laundry.

COLIN BARRETT
Age: 63 Apps: 86 Trophies: 6
Then: Full back who was playing for Manchester City reserves before Clough gave him his chance.

VIV ANDERSON
Age: 59 Apps: 425 Trophies: 6
Then: Had already come through the Forest youth ranks by the time Clough arrived, but hadn’t established himself as first-choice. Went on to play more than 400 games for the club and become the first black footballer to play for England.

GARRY BIRTLES
Age: 59, Apps: 278, Trophies: 4
Then: Worked as a carpenter before he was signed from non-League Long Eaton for just £2,000. Took over as centre forward at the start of the first European Cup-winning run.

DAVID NEEDHAM
Age: 66 Apps: 112 Trophies: 6
Then: The veteran defender had played nearly 500 games for Forest’s neighbours Notts County, although Clough picked him up from QPR for £140,000. An unused substitute in both the European Cup finals.

FRANK CLARK
Age: 72 Apps: 155 Trophies: 4
Then: Had played more than 400 games for Newcastle before moving to Forest, just before Clough took over. The 1979 final brought a fairytale end to his career aged 35.

ARCHIE GEMMILL
Age: 68 Apps: 78 Trophies: 4
Then: Combative Scotland midfielder who had flourished under Cough’s management at Derby and was one of his first signings at Forest. The pair fell out after Gemmill was dropped from the 1979 final team and he left to join Birmingham

KENNY BURNS
Age: 62 Apps: 196 Trophies: 6
Then: The Glaswegian was used as a striker by Birmingham but Clough signed for £150,000 in 1977 to play centre back.

TONY WOODCOCK
Age: 59 Apps: 176 Trophies: 4
Then: Promoted by Clough from the youth ranks and became PFA Young Player of the Year in 1978. Sold to FC Cologne for £600,000 shortly after starring in the 1979 European Cup final

JOHN ROBERTSON
Age: 62 Apps: 499 Trophies: 6
Then: Robertson was on the transfer list when Clough took over. The new manager harnessed his winger’s talent — he called Robertson his ‘Picasso’ — and the Scot went on to score the only goal against Hamburg to win the 1980 European Cup final.

IAN BOWYER
Age: 64 Apps: 541 Trophies: 6
Then: Stylish midfielder who started his career at Manchester City and featured in their 1970 League Cup final defeat of West Bromwich. Arrived at Forest from Leyton Orient. Played in both European finals.

JOHN McGOVERN
Age: 65 Apps: 330 Trophies: 6
Then: First met Clough when he was a 15-year-old youth at Hartlepool and the newly appointed manager told him: ‘Get your hair cut, you look like a girl.’ McGovern then played for Clough at Derby, before captaining both his European Cup-winning Forest sides.

JOHN O’HARE
Age: 69 Apps: 122 Trophies: 6
Then: Scotland striker who started his career at Sunderland before Clough paid £200,000 to take him to Derby. Followed the manager to Leeds for his infamous 44-day reign, then to Forest. Came on as a substitute in the 1980 final

GARY MILLS
Age: 53 Apps: 142 Trophies: 4
Then: Defender or midfielder who became Forest’s youngest League player when Clough gave him his debut aged 16 in 1978. Two years later he also became the youngest finalist in European Cup history.

MARTIN O’NEILL
Age: 63 Apps: 348 Trophies: 6
Then: A trained lawyer who had a love-hate relationship with Clough, and never forgave him after he was dropped for the 1979 final. Midfielder O’Neill started in the victorious side a year later

We have our central pairing injured. So we need to play in an emergency back 4 or back 3.
Young John Kennedy went to Barca along with David Marshall and were outstanding.
Does no one trust the players to do the same.
Bitton cruised the games when he was paired with jozo.
He will do so again.
Ajer and Bitton were comfortable in the first half over in Astana, all the team lost their composure for the period astana rocked us.
Once we got it back we put the tie to bed.
That pairing i wouldnt expect to happen again, but if it does i will be supportive of the manager. If it doesnt work and we get beat so fuckin what. We werent expected to win anyway even with our best centre backs available.
We cant put our efforts into being negative, i fully understand where Monti and the rest are coming from, but im a positive person, i trust the manager and the players he picks. Our midfield to forward play will have them worried no doubt about it. So i will go in not hoping for much but at the same time excited about getting so much more. What a great result it will be if we take points of psg without our top players available.
Celtic park on eurooean nights let the magic begin.
Bring them all on i say.

Well put Jimmy exactly how I see it myself.
I mentioned young McCart the other day could he come in and do a Kennedy?
We beat Barca with Matthews at Left Back and Efe and Wilson in the middle ffs.
They had better players in every position on the park and we still done them.
Believe ffs shite and you never know what might happen?
Be positive whilst acknowledging the situation?
Moaning about it is not going to alter anything.
