Celtic Diary Thursday August 31: Are You Ready For This ?

Well, todays the day.

Months of planning, scouting, interviewing and subtle seduction come to a head with the transfer window being replaced at midnight with a set of steel security shutters.

Look, at least I’m trying to use different metaphors.

We’ve heard several stories, been given several hints and have dutifully made a few up ourselves to help a struggling mainstream media, and so should today be any different ?

Regular readers will remember a suggestion a week or so ago that Jason Denaayer would complement a fit Dedryck Boyata at the back. Yesterday, the media announced that he had snubbed the club to return to Turkey.

This is known as a Celtic Story in the media. You can spot them quite easily as they contain words such as “snubbed “, “rejected ” and ” refused “.

Truth is, Celtic did enquire about the Belgian, but Manchester City had other plans for him, which, of course, involved Turkey. They never spoke to the player, which made it tricky for him to even consider the move, let alone refuse, snub or reject it.

Just remember , no matter what you hear today, try to be objective, question the source and above all remember that sometimes its merely how the reporter sees it.

Things can be portrayed differently, often inaccurately, especially where there is money or publicity involved.

Look at this Ghanaian poster for the movie Mrs Doubtfire, the one where Robin Williams played an English nanny with an Edinburghish accent.

The cover does not quite represent the content, as is often the case with our media.

Back at the ranch, and one who did fall for the old seduction routine is occasional fruitbat Oddsone Edouard…

His instagram gave us a clue as to his plans for the day..

This is a loan deal, but there is an option to buy.

The player may have slipped off track after attracting attention during his exploits for the French under aged teams, and maybe he feels that Moussa Dembele and Olivier Ntcham are now his role models, and that can’t be a bad thing.

Anyone else coming in ?

Well, the general feeling is that we need a centre half, although if we don;t get who we want, then Jozo Simunovic and Erik Svaitchenko won’t be going anywhere, although the Bosnian has been looking at his What to do in Burnley pamphlet and is losing interest in that particular move.

After all, he’s probably not ready to be put out to pasture yet, and may wait for the traditional Southampton escape, so favoured by previous mercenaries.

However, there is talk of a surprising and morale boosting arrival, but its probably bollocks.

If we don’t get some new faces in, and sometimes its better not to spend money for the sake of spending it, then no doubt some supporters will accuse the club of penny pinching.

Charlie Saiz, in yesterdays replies, pointed out that quite a few quid has been spent….

Net cash in the Bank as of 31st Dec 2016 was £18.642 m (£7.7m 2015)
Since then we have signed the following 5 players
Kouassi
Hayes
Benyu
Ntcham
Roberts
And sold the following
GMS
Janko
Izaguirre
Renegotiated Contracts for
Brendan Rodgers
Gordon
Armstrong
Forrest

Add to that the new pitch, the upgrade at Lennoxtown and presumably a fair chunk in bonus payments to players for winning the treble, and it becomes apparent that money in goes elsewhere other than on new players.

Oh, did I just mix up todays diary with my application for the Celtic View editors job ?

Over on twitter, Barcabhoy pointed out some of these  facts in more detail…

1 Ntcham cost a minimum £4.75M with potential add ons of £2M

2 Hayes , Benyu & Roberts cost fees of £3.5 M

3 Agents have to be paid in all cases. Circa £800K

4 New hybrid pitch £2M

5 Lennoxtown £4M

This doesn’t mean that money isn’t available, but after disasters such as Boerrigter, Pukki, Miku and a dozen others, care needs to be taken with where its spent.

Another name thrown into the mix is Aiden Flint of Bristol City, who has been grabbing the headlines down in the south west with some excellent performances at that level,  though the lady next to him could easily score forty goals a season up here.

No matter how it ends up today, we’ll still have more to smile about than most…

Image result for jimmy bell rangers

Poor Jimmy.

If it isn’t bad enough that his club has earmarked money for a chapel within Ibrox for the new players, so they can do sunday morning matches straight after mass, he’s heard they’re about to sign player called Declan.

Which legendary photoshopper Cartuja saw coming when the scout delivered his report..

By the way, don’t mention this, they are trying to keep it quiet..

No. Fiddling about with other peoples money has never been the Rangers way, has it ?

Enough about them.

As funny as it is.

The big issue today is whether or not we can secure a centre half or two to strengthen the back line. Many supporters are going into various levels of seizures at the thought of our current central defence facing up to the fire power of Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich.

Oddly enough, every team they face has doubts about their central defence facing up to the Neymars and Lewandowskis. And the rest of them.

World class forwards demand world class defenders, and we aren’t going to get them for obvious reasons.

What we will have to depend on is heart, effort and team spirit.

Although there has been reassuring contact from someone who’s been in front of world class firepower before, and coped well enough with it..

We’ve had the first good news of the day….

Defender Grant Hanley has joined Norwich City from Newcastle United on a four-year deal! 💛💚

Mark Shiels on twitter has a plan for champions League nights, and if it works it could be spectacular…

Before we go, a wee compare and contrast from transfer deadline day today, with one from a few years ago..

Nothing really changes, except, of course there wasn;t a transfer deadline day back then, but thats what it wold have looked like.

Probably.

Yesterdays picture…

and its a winner for the banter brigade…

Ralph if you persist in writing a diary based on balance, logic, intelligence and maturity I have to question what you are doing to posters. As far as I am aware Simunovic is fit ,Boyata and Sviatchenko are both back in training?
It strikes me as rather odd that there is blind panic about singing defenders when the 3 who carried us through last Seasons unprecedented success (Domestically at least) are all still at the Club?
Could it be that Transfer fever is raging among a growing number of the panic Brigade among us?
With all 3 fit and the backup we have in Bitton Ajer McCart Tierney and Lustig surely there is no need to panic?
Good enough for 2016 but not so because of 4 mentally difficult ties in 2017 that ANY DEFENCE in World football with struggle to cope with?
Provided they all stay and are fit I really don’t get what the issue is here.

In that case, Rodgers should be sacked for lying to the support as he said afterwards that it was due to the artificial pitch. Even before the game he said

“He’s not an injury concern but we have to monitor it especially when you look at playing Kilmarnock and Astana away on artificial pitches”.

Boysta is quicker than Erik, scores more goals than Jozo but there is this niggling feeling he can make a serious mistake, if he wasn’t injured so often and Jozo didn’t seem to want to move to Turin/ Burnley, anybody but Celtic, then I would be happy with them. I would like it if Eric stayed because he is more consistent than the two if slower. Shuffling the three would work fine.
I am really pleased that Paddy is back but if it’s true Celtic are paying him £46 k then that will cause dressing room ructions with the likes of Sinclair on £25k. The club might have to deal with it by upping a lot of players wages, Tirtney and Srmstrong sprung to mind. We can afford it but then it reduces the money for new signings.

Reply to  BJF

Not being funny but what Paddy earns (as player from the richest Club in England) is of no concern of Sinclair or anyone else for that matter.
He’s not at Man City for no reason after all.
Sinclair career hit the buffers before he came to Celtic so I should imagine he’s just glad to be in decent employment and enjoying his football again?

Charlie I agree completely with you on the wages that Roberts gets. But you contradict what you said yesterday, when I mentioned that Celtic need to up the wages to get better players and disregard the wage structure when they needed too. I simply mentioned that if you pay players 35-40 grand a week they will come to Celtic. you seemed to disagree claiming that no one would ever sign for Celtic until the club had safely secured CL qualification. Bit confused? According to this site we are in worse trouble than I thought. You now suggest that maintenance of a Celtic Park and Lennoxtown are dependent on CL qualification? I was under the impression that daily running costs are met separately from the ‘bonus’ of the CL cash? After all, celtic are the best run club in Europe. Jesus, now relaying the turf comes out of the CL pot as well as the training facilities. At this rate, we are heading for a full-blown crisis. the only redeeming feature of this type of article, or most of them to be honest, is that you declare everything to be shite at the beginning. But poor Big Peter! i wouldn’t be surprised if we begin to run out of pies as we cannot afford to buy them. Clearly Celtic earn absolutely no money at all except from the CL. %2,000 season books, an absolutely unbelievable array of tat at various outlets all doing a roaring trade and the sale of various players. None of it makes any profit. Good grief.

Reply to  john

No what I said was Celtic need to increase the wage structure for players already at the Club.
What you said was the Average Premiership player is on 35-40k a week.
Which is incorrect as the Average wage is closer to 50k which as you know from looking at our finances is beyond our reach WITHOUT PUTTING US BACK IN DEBT.
Champions League qualification several years in a row puts us in a position to do this.
I have a feeling ( and that’s all I have ATM) that the new contracts for Gordon Forrest Armstrong and Gordon may have pushed our wage structure up slightly.
Couple that with the arrival of Roberts and the fact we are paying the bulk if not all of his wage then this would seem to suggest a shift in policy?
If we can continue to source and secure players like Dembele Ntcham and Sinclair at the prices we are and can pay them a bit more than we normally do then this will increase the likelihood that they will come and perhaps stay longer than the likes of Wanyama Van Dijk etc?
Common sense approach which I think we can all agree is now paying dividends ends to coin a phrase.
My opinion is there is way too much focus on the cost of the player rather than what the player brings for the money you spend?
Dembele could well go on to be sold for upwards of £30m the fact we only paid £500k would seem to make a mockery of this shallow minded approach?
Just how I see it bud.

Why would Simunovic want away from a club he’s hardly proved himself at? He’s been injured for long stretches and he’s been above average most of the time but has made some key mistakes as well. If he wants away, I would punt him as far away as he wants. He must think he’s better than what he has shown so far. Sviatcheno is slow and a bit short for a CD but he is technically better than Simunovic. Nobody should be sold this close to the CL. January maybe. Boyata will do but…
Oh for the likes of Big Bobo, Rieper, Stan Varga or similar. Eastern Europe, Africa or Scandinavia must have some like them?

Reply to  Devoy45

The answer seems to be a fairly simple one to me …
Offer Jozo an improved wage with a guarantee he can go in Jan if a Club matches our evaluation?
Stick a £12m buy out clause and a 15% sell on clause for good measure and weed out the pretenders.

Because they will pay him double what Celtic will and he thinks he is an EPL player. At any other time I would flog him for the top offer made by the strugglers interested. If the opening bid is 9 million then we could get 11 mil. But this is not any time. We desperately need him and he knows it. I rate the big fella but his heart has never been in it. He couldn’t wait to get to Turin and seems to have his head turned by offers from any where. This is not good but we need him as no real work has been done to find a replacement. I find it amazing that no one inside Celtic Park seems to have been aware that the big man is not really committed to Celtic in the long term.

Charlie Saiz: sounds good. I wonder what he’s worth? (not what he thinks he’s worth) I think it would be a dangerous game for Jozo to play mind games with Brendan.
I even long for the days of Van Dijk and Denayer. We were watertight at the back but a lot of that was also due to Big Forster. In the last two decades, defence has always been our weak spot and we never seem to get a good CB partnership for long.

Reply to  Devoy45

I would value him about £8-10m though the market at the minute is bonkers (Jonny Evans VVD) so we could probably squeeze another £2-3m out of a cash rich Club desperate to sort out their defence?
Like the VVD we should put a sell on clause in just in case he becomes more sought after in a better League?
His ongoing injury issue keeps his price down I think but there is a decent player in there as we have seen.
Games changing all the time Clubs are spending big on defenders and we seem to be in control of players prices at Celtic?

Looks like my posts are not getting through. I am no business man but I am sure that most businesses recognise that there has to be some serious investment if you want to remain successful and compete with others in your field. Maybe I am wrong. I have often been wrong before. However, big clubs seldom aim for a money out = money in model. But according to this site we need CL money for everything, relaying the turf to maintaining Lennoxtown. The thinking, so they seem to be saying, is that Celtic make absolutely no money from any other part of the business and cannot afford the day to day running of the club as it stands. Why would anyone write such nonsense.

Most “Big Clubs” have vast Debts unless funded by super rich Oligarchs or Billionaires?
You must also factor in their revenues by comparison which dwarf our own when you throw in TV deals etc.
We are rich by Scottish terms but the reality is smaller Clubs in richer Leagues have way more income WITHOUT CL every year.
We are dependent on that to continue making a profit and moving forward.
As Uralius points out we are normally forced to sell if we don’t.

I suppose it is good that our supporters are different to the other clubs, with the exception of the ‘Ker-ching’ thing. We boast about breaking even and that we have saved money while other supporters are boasting about how much their boards have spent. Celtic celebrating frugality and breaking even since 1888.

It is the fact that we are £18m in the Bank that allows us to dictate who goes when and for how much.
By the next Summer we will probably have close to £20m in the bank and a full squad that’s been together for 2 years.
When was the last time we had that?
MONs era and we ended up in £30m worth of debt achieving it.
The current approach is reaping rewards on and off the Park in case you hadn’t noticed John?

CS just caught up in your post, I was told Celtic have to pay all Paddy’s wages, Man City are not involved. This was I guess the reason for the protracted negotiations, Celtic’s wage ceiling.

Reply to  BJF

If true then our Board has actually raised the ceiling on wages.
I sated weeks ago we should do this in order to keep our current players happy and prevent them from being lured else where.
If we can continue to Scout the likes of Ntcham Dembele etc for low fees and pay them a bit more then I believe we will keep them happier for longer?
This in turn will allow their value to increase at Celtic and not at the next Club who no doubt like with Van Dijk reap the greater reward.
