Celtic Diary Wednesday August 30: Celtic Linked With…Nearly Everyone

The transfer window.

Probably the most irritating thing to ever happen to football. From a supporters point of view, at least.

We all want to see money spent, we all claim we know how to spend it wisely, and we all think that no matter how good a player is, or how good the management think he is, if he hasn’t cost millions then he must be bloody hopeless.

None of us consider that just because the club has a few quid in the bank, they don’t have to spend it. If I went into a shop looking for a television and they didn’t have what I was looking for, one that was better than the one I’ve got, I wouldn’t come out with a toaster just because someone told me I had to spend.

The quality of player needed to make a difference to the Celtic squad means the market is narrower, and there’s a lot of competition out there. We might think the benefits of playing for Celtic are incomparable, but there is more money on offer elsewhere, there are more attractive places to live than Glasgow, some of which come with guaranteed good weather, and there are places with much more media exposure than the Scottish league.

It takes a lot to convince someone who has plenty of options to move to the north , just ask Middlesborough, Sunderland and Newcastle.

That doesn’t mean the right type of player isn’t out there, it just means they are harder to find, and, in the knowledge that Celtic want them, they can pump up their price a little.

Players such as the four who have already joined up are a rarity in that they want to play for Celtic, which is why, Roberts apart, they came to Glasgow without the guarantee of the Champions League. Roberts had already decided he was coming anyway, we just had to wait for Manchester City to agree to it.

It appears that we are neither finished losing players or gaining players, however, and there may yet be a few surprises.

French media is reporting that Moussa Dembele is on his way to Marseille, though other reports over there suggest they can’t afford him. It does get Dembele back in the news, and we may see other teams suddenly remember he’s still around.

A last day bid ?

Maybe not from France, but possibly England wouldn’t be surprising.

Sone Aluko, remember him ?, just moved clubs for £7.5m, and this illustrates the futility of getting involved in negotiations for even the most average player in England , so we need to be looking elsewhere for anyone with experience.

And with only a couple of days to go these kind of prices for that kind of player will become more common as clubs bow to fan pressure to spend money.

Thankfully, the UCL qualification and the spin off from Virgil van Dijks probable move to Liverpool means that Celtic don’t need to sell, but if a player asks to leave, such as Jozo Simunovic, then its difficult to justify keeping them.

Notably Erik Sviatchenko’s move to Copenhagen is on hold, presumably because of the Bosnian internationals desire to go and the injury problem that came with Coetzee.

Despite Nir Biton and Kristoffer Ajer filling in nobly at the back, they are not seen as a capable pairing at UCL level, and as neither are seasoned defenders, thats a fair judgement, so at least one centre half would seemingly be high on the list..

But who ?

Jean Kevin Duverne is apparently back on the radar.

Celtic enquired about him back in June, but then the story sort of disappeared after the club denied it. He’s 19, and currently plays for Lens, in France.

Again, though, he’s not a seasoned centre half, no matter how much promise he shows.

The same goes for this guy, one we were made aware of a while back..

Tosin Adarabioyo

Tosin Adarabioyo, who may well have had his head turned by the success of Man City pals Roberts and Ntcham…

Or Jason Denaayer, now more experienced yet still only 22, and languishing on the sidelines at the Etihad after being loaned to Sunderland, presumably as some sort of punishment.

He knows the club, and has seen his fellow club and country team mate Dedryck Boyata flourish..I’m sure he could be tempted north again.

and if its big mney he’s after, we could cite the progress in that field of van Dijk, his former partner..

At least one paper has been reading the Diary…

Undoubtedly, there are others on the radar.

Such as Grant Hanley…

Image result for scared face gif

These are just the ones that we have heard of.

Another being discussed in France is this guy…

Image result for odsonne edouard

Not only are they discussing a loan move to Celtic in France, they’re discussing it, somewhat unfairly, in French..

The forward seems to be one for the future, as he has a little bit of baggage that may have to be sorted out while he’s here..

Still, we do need back up…

Anything that knows where the net is…

Image result for animals playing football gif

Time, of course will tell, and it looks like a lot of us will be checking social media every half hour or so, and shaking our heads a lot…

One thing to remember though, is that its not neccessarily the club who are leaving it late. Players and agents play a significant part in this, always waiting for the bigger pay day, for as long as they possibly can.

The transfer window is to blame, they can only make their money twice a year, which is why they demand so much.

Elsewhere, and the Bolivian FA are the latest to implement the rules without fear or favour… which, of course, seems unlikely to catch on in Scotland..

Its international weekend, and forgive me if i don;t mention it again, but i’m boycotting everything to do with the national team from this day on.

Hopefully, others will do the same.

Yesterday, we had this for you to ponder..

I couldn’t give two fucks who, where or how he olayed for any cunt else, what he did and could do again in our Hoops is what matters!
Going by your logic, we shouldn’t have bothered signing Sinclair then?

He was a decent defender in his own right Monti I don’t subscribe to the notion VVD made him any better?
Thing is two years have past and It would appear from the outside looking in he’s not kicked on as a player so all I am asking is can he still do what he did at Celtic or was it a flash in the pan?
I would suggest looking at Rami Gershon again he to me didn’t get much of a chance under Lenny I felt at the time?

How much are the board at celtic paying you? Your analogy with the Tv and a toaster is complete bullshit. I’ll give you one which is more apt. Your cooker is broken and cannot be fixed. You need a cooker and go to the shop to but one. there are a wide range of cookers available but you don’t really want to spend the money. Do you leave the shop and decide to tell your wife that you will be able to libve without a cooker. Or do you bite the bullet and buy one, even though you are very tightfisted, because it is a necessity and enable the family to eat properly. Celtic have no choice because Nir Bitton and Ajer have not been ‘standing in ably’, they look as if they are an accident waiting to happen, especially against good footballers. Celtic are not in the market for luxuries as you imply but need to sign proven players to ensure we can compete. I would venture that it is too late and that has largely been down to the board. The injuries to key players are old injuries, Dembele and Boyata, and should have been sorted weeks ago . but that is the ploy. Leave it late, get no one and sigh and get Brendan to go out and talk about ‘how every effort was made, blah, blah, blah’. we’ve been here before. And who are we interested in according to the papers, prospects and guys who’s career has trailed off. Denayer left two years ago and has not had a great time. He is possibly the best we could get at this moment, and there is no guarantee he is up for it. It is all down to bad planning and a reticence to invest at the required levels. Still there is always January in preparation for next season. Aye right.

We have 8 days to target players good enough for the Champions League.
The reason we have only had 8 days is we never qualified till late afternoon on the 22nd of August in Astana.
Without beating Astana there would actually be NO NEED to sign players good enough for the Champions League.
8 days is not a great deal of time when competing for players with Clubs paying way more than us for mediocre talent?
This is called realism John it’s not Fantasy Football or League Manager.

Reply to  john

Here’s another analogy …
Your Club has a chance of Champions League Football and the riches that go with it..you have a squad capable of domestic dominance but not European greatness as the gulf in class is huge… so you wait till you finally secure Champions League and all it’s riches 8 days before the window shuts for getting players in good enough to play in it..at which point the usual suspects start moaning about the lack of signings even though the money’s just been secured to fund it and you are in the market up against Clubs with way more money to start with…on top of this the players you want are after a big move and their agents a big bonus to go with said move.
Oh wait that’s not an analogy?
That’s actually the situation we are in as a successful Club in one of footballs backwaters.
Fs guys be patient and let the Club at least try to get a few MORE in.

Remember last year, £30m from Champs League + £10-20m in increased ticket sales, merchandise etc which would enable us to be buying up to £10m players?

Remember a couple of weeks ago when we “slaughtered” Killie 5-0 in the Right Said Fred Cup and all the hubris about how we had the first and second best teams in the land?

We have 3 broken down CHs and have had for weeks, we’ve got 1 unfit CF and the other with a dodgy history and all of this known knowns.

The truth is these areas should’ve been sorted before the qualifiers so that we could see if they were up to the job instead of trialing them against the minnows from Paris, Brussels and Munich.

Ralph….the Hanley pic had me bursting with laughter….brilliant!! We do need to invest in CB very quickly or we will be destroyed by our opponents in the CL, it was evident with the Astana game, in Brendan we trust…..as for Peter….we will leave it at that…cough, cough….

Rebus67

Getting a quality CB from the English market is going to be very difficult. If you look at the EPL teams plus promotion contenders from the Championship, you see that many of them have a CB as a priority. Even teams like Birmingham are prepared to spend at our level to get a new CB.
Hopefully we have spread our net more widely.

As for Denayer, is he better than Ajer at this point? Sure, he has more experience, but that has mostly been unproductive since he left us.

On the striker front, a loan is a good idea but is Edouard any better than, say, Moult? With Moult you know what you are getting, with Edouard it is a gamble, both on and off the park.

Can Moult be obtained on a loan to, say, Xmas?

Still, I trust BR….let’s see what happens.

Monti,

Are you saying that I spout pish? Well you are correct! My thinking was as follows. Let us assume that Dembele is not going this window, then any incoming syriker is a stop gap to cover for injuries to him and to Grif. When these two are fit, the third striker will hardly play. Moult can score but, agreed, he probably cannot up his game sufficiently to become a regular. So we get him in until Xmas on loan and let him go back to his club after that. If he punches above his weight, we buy him. M’well get a loan fee, the player gets a chance to improve himself, and we get low cost cover for the domestic games.

Not so daft, really. However, would The Well agree to it? They are relegation candidates, IMHO.

What a strategy that is? Wait until the bonus of playing the in CL is secured before getting playersin. What about buying players to ensure that you qualify every year. Nothing is 100% but you make as sure as possible by strengthening to qualify. If you engge in small time thinking you are a small club. celtic say they are a CL club yet do the same thing every year and it is rubbish. They still have the money from last years competition. It is embarrassing hearing the support talking about 35 million and giving it ‘ker ching’ every two minutes knowing that the money will not be spent and instaed of qualifying with ease and getting further ahead of our domestic competitors we just tread water. It is a good thing that they are garbage as they would catch us quite quickly. The whole scenario repeated ad nauseum tell us of the chronic lack of ambition of our boar. They are delighted because Europe is a bonus. They think we have no right to be there and want to bank the cash, get thumped and get out. What is even more disappointing is the defeatist attitude of the support who have bought into this idea and adopted the same mentality. Great atmosphere, Lionel pur luvs us so he dis. Personally I think we should be there every year. If we fail to qualify then someone needs to get the sack. we are a huge club but if we don’t see ourselves as a CL club and behave as if we have skipped in and someone is about to throw us out we become a laughing stock. And that can quickly happen when you don’t spend SOME of the massive amount of money you are raking in to improve your team. This is done by buying the odd experienced campaigner not prospects, all of the time. Come on stop thinking so small behave like real Celtic supporters not the timid little mice you have become. Stand up.

John,

You certainly put effort into your posts! For me, the most worrying thing about many of your posts is that there is often a grain of truth in what you say.

Is it smart to wait until the last minute to get players in, or is it not?

Frankly, I do not know! If we shop the English market only, then our best chance of affording quality players is to wait until most transfers have taken place, and we pick from those that are disappointed not to have got a move.

IMHO, we should be looking outside the English market in Eastern European markets and Scandinavia for options. We should be able to get these targets in earlier, especially experienced players who want a large payday on their final contract.

Whether the scouting network is up to this, I just do not know. I suspect that you do not know either.

On the other hand, the management team knows the English market. We have had Dembele, Sinclair, Benyu, Roberts from there……..plus De Vries! We have not done badly.

I think the club has been thrown by the high injury rate, pre-season. Boyata, Sviatchenko, and Ebouie ….all out from the defensive area. Then Dembele and Grif from the strikers….also out. That is pure bad luck…the perfect storm. The question is why did all of these injuries happen over a short time span?

These injuries have changed the transfer strategy…probably requiring that the budget be spread over more players, thus making it difficult to bring in better than what we have.

Established players (‘stars’) have no incentive to come to Scottish football, Glasgow or Scotland. Our biggest earners at around 25k per week are Sinclair, Brown, Dembele and Lustig. Griff is close to 20k weekly (that makes him a millionaire)
Rogic, Tierney and Boyata get about 15k. The rest are scaled down. Add the coaching staff and I would think our overall wage bill is 12-13 million? That wouldn’t buy Neymar, Messi or any star in the EPL. You’re asking a lot of Lawwell or our scouting staff to find a Van Dijk, Larsson, Sinclair or Rogic in a few weeks. Why waste the money when we are just as likely to get a Cascarino, Gillespie, Stuart Slater, Berkovitch or Juninho? Armstrong, Tierney, Griffiths, McGregor and Brown are the type of player we should be looking for.None of them come from very far away. Only Larsson stayed for any length of time.Types like Sutton and Big Bad John don’t exist in the EPL anymore. Lawwell isn’t to blame for the conditions that created Neymar, Messi, Pogba and so on. TV did. I still think we can do something in the CL with the players we have, when fit. If Lawwell can do anything for the club, it would be to get us into the EPL, where we could be spoiled rich bastards like everybody else and probably not finish high enough to get in the Europa League.
Not having had much money in my working life I like to think that money doesn’t buy heart, soul or a winning mentality. It was Inter Milan who had the shiny teeth, big pay packets and perfect physiques, not our Lisbon Lions.

So no Champions League level targets then just run of the mill players which we have an abundance of already?
The Manager has stated that he’s not interested in getting numbers in but rather we should focus on quality replacements whenever possible?
As far as I am aware it’s actuall better quality we need not more bench warmers?
I might even be as bold to suggest we need to get rid of a few as well?
This is about convincing better players to come to Scotland and perhaps increase our chances of success in the CL.

That’s why you go on loan til Weered gets suspended for many offences, usually after losing his rag and shouting at women and everybody. We bring you back for the last 16(I know,it’s getting a bit wishful) and you stand around shouting Pish at every “honest mistake” and our goalie after one of his ” clearances”.Charlie will be on at night putting up Rebel clips on the big screens for the Bhoys, all night, til his wife drags him to bed.The place would be rocking and because the wage bill would be hugely reduced,we could lower ticket prices so normal fans could get in. Lions had a better manager as well.Different game now though. John makes some good points. Could no one have identified players we could get in if we qualified ? Who is planning in there ? Like this we will finish forth, win and lose some in the Europa and then go out. We deserve a team with better quality players that BR can work with and take further.

I think John should be signed,to do the diary. The guy we have at the moment is a moaner, doesn’t like the GB and turns up as if he owns the place.Plus,he’s done a Macari and doesn’t even live in Glasgow.Makes some sort of sense but my head is bursting at the mo….

We are talking here as if we know what’s going on at Celtic regarding targets etc?
The act is we don’t know and we won’t know until they get paraded by the Club.
If they get paraded by the Club?
You can bet your bottom dollar Brendan had a list dawn up weeks if not months ago who he would like and my guess is Paddy and Ntcham were two on that list?

Monti, get yer kit on, you’ll be suiting up for Hamilton. Centre back! Brendan will take care of any minor body mass index issues you may have. I’m only 5’10 but sadly, that’s also my waist measurement! You could park me right in front of goal but I couldnae come out for crosses. They’d maybe just richochet off!

C/O Read Celtic.
Edouard will also be eligible to face his parent club in the Champions League group stages when the two sides meet at Celtic Park on September 12th and in Paris on November 22nd as UEFA rules forbid loan clauses being inserted into transfer deals.

If Brendan had a list drawn up weeks ago and there was nothing done about it then we are in a situation where the manager will do exactly as he is told and has no say on transfers. How long will he hang around under the same working conditions as Ronny Deila? in the modern world are mercenaries and Celtic need to have a flexible wage structure. Of course Celtic cannot pay 50 grand plus per but 35-40 is possible. The average wage in the EPL is about 35 a week. If you pay them they will play for you. They have no affiliation with the club, they are professionals and will presumably do their best for whoever pays them enough. We are constantly moaning about being outspent by diddy clubs in England. Now some say that players will not want to play for Celtic if they have a chance of playing in the CL. Of course they will if the wages are enough. And the players at Celtic will have to recognise that some better quality players will command the higher wages. It is the same at every big club. The Tierney’s of this world are few and far between. We cannot continue to operate in the lower league manner we have been for decades. One of the supposed targets is a guy called Aden Flint, Birmingham have just had a 3.5 million bid for this guy rejected. He is 28 and playing for Bristol City. I am not saying this is true but it is more plausible than Denayer. Denayer has been relatively poor since leaving us. He also could not get out the door fast enough and has not been complimentary about the standard of football in Scotland. He was never going to return. And again we are going to sign another prospect. Both Lawwell and Rodgers said this would not happen. And no one will be signed by tomorrow because Big Erik and Jozo will be promised exit passes in January to stay for the CL. What a mess? Hopefully the incentive to get the hell out of Celtic Park is enough for them to play well for the next 3 or 4 months. But it doesn’t really make it a happy place, playing first team players who are not committed to the club. Again this was supposed to be a no-no for Rodgers. A poor show, all in.

First off the bat…
The average wage in the EPL is around 49k /week
Secondl…
Ntcham and Roberts were on Brendans list
Third
The finances needed to get better players in than we already have were not secured until the 22nd August
Lastly
Stop talking shite and get back to your Leonard Cohen collection John.

Another disappointing piece of news is that Liam Henderson is set to be flogged for s derisory amount. The player will be desperate to leave as he is not playing enough but I thought that Liam and Ryan Christie would both be in the first team squad this season. Not playing every week but getting regular enough games. For me allowing Christie to go to Aberdeen was a mistake. He is one of the most talented players in Scotland and should have been given a run in the team. I really hope we get him back next season.
