Celtic Diary Tuesday August 29: Spending Spree Begins…

The biggest open secret in football became reality yesterday-or will do today, officially, when Patrick Roberts returned to Celtic.

( Diary, August 9

Oh, Patrick Roberts.

We hear Brendan popped down to Manchester a few weeks ago to see the Roberts family, and explain to them why he wants him at Celtic, and how it would be in the players best interests to come back.

We hear there has been a deal done, but its hard to work out whether its a loan or a permanent move. Our drunk at the bar had had too many and couldn’t remember himself what the deal was, but we did find further evidence that he’s definitely coming back… )

So when Chris Sutton goes on about where you heard it first, you know what to tell him.

After considerable negotiations the English youngster ended up where he wanted to be, and where he was wanted.

Cetic may come on for criticism later as it appears to be a twelve month loan deal, and an expensive one at that. But thats why it took so long. Celtic wanted to buy him, Manchester City were willing to sell, but some sources claim that Fulham wanted their bit as well.

Fulham sold Roberts to Manchester City for £5m plus add ons. Roberts didn’t feature at the Etihad, but made a name for himself at Celtic, which annoyed the Cottagers because that didn’t trigger the add ons.

Then, when City wanted to sell, they presumably saw a player doing well, earning money for city, and felt a wee bit left out, or even stung. Manchester city wanted to keep the peace with Fulham, and so reluctantly agreed to a loan.

A similar scenario would have been if Celtic had sold Virgil van Dijk to Southampton for £5m, added on another £7m if he played one hundred games, but the Saints loaned him to Liverpool for a year, who then bought him, giving Saints a profit but nothing for Celtic.

Instead , of course, with news that Celtic will rake in around £12m from the sale of van Dijk to Liverpool, one could just conclude that Lawwell et al are better at selling players than Fulham.

There are a couple of days to spend that windfall, and there are a couple of centre halfs who will be ringing around Glasgow estate agents. Probably from Manchester City, whose fans seem to be a little upset at being relegated to little more than Celtics feeder club.

Replying to   and

Cant believe celtic fans are gassed about a player who cant even get in the reserve squad at city. Tinpot club, tinpot league. Irrelevant.

Or this one, not an official account, by the way..

@patrick7roberts good luck in your loan but cheerio to a top level pro career – only one hastag & it involves liquid in plastic or glass

He wants to play for a club that hasn’t sold its soul, largely because it isn’t for sale.

Simple , really.

A club where he is welcomed by players and fans alike.

Scott Brown posted this on instagram…

Scott Brown's joke photo to welcome Patrick Roberts back to Celtic. Picture: broony08/Instagram

And his room at Lennoxtown, which he shares with Keiran Tierney is just as they left it..

Image result for celtic bunk beds

Sounds like he’s happy, anyway…

The manager has been brilliant with me,”

“He obviously wanted me back and so did Celtic. I had a decision to make after pre-season and when that came around Brendan Rodgers was obviously a huge factor in that. He is a top manager. I worked under him all of last year and I believe I can develop under him even more and become a better player.”

He gets the iconic ( iconic ? he’s taken it off Nadir ciftci ) number seven shirt..

“It’s a massive honour to wear this iconic Celtic number,”.

“I know some of the great players who have worn it in the past and I will wear it with pride.”

I can think of three, and one of them is better known as a Liverpool player.

Of course, the Champions League was a big factor in  his return…

I watched it in Manchester with all the lads there, but I had an eye on Celtic to see who they got,”

“It’s a hard draw but it’s good, and it’s where I strive to play in, while we know what this club can bring to the Champions League. I haven’t seen the Celtic lads yet but I’m sure they will all be looking forward to it and will be raring to go when it gets underway.

“Celtic Park was rocking last year in the Champions League and I’m sure it will be the exact same this year. I would love to be out there playing for the fans in that environment and entertaining them.”

Players with little chance of making the grade in Manchester will look now to Roberts ( and Ntcham, Biton and Boyata ) as an inspration, and may seek a similar type of move to prevent their career from stagnating.

Especially if they were in the room with him when he no doubt pointed out he would be involved in Munich, Paris and Brussels…

Should be an interesting last couple of days of the window.

Perhaps even an interesting day today. In accepting another expensive loan deal, do Celtic have first dibs on a centre back ?

For Roberts, though, he’s glad he’s come home, although his buddy Keiran has his first day back planned..

We certainly need a few more players in, as the squad is down an incredible twenty seven players this summer, woth only four in…

Could be a busy couple of days, come to think of it. Lets hope we get who we want.

Whilst things may be looking good for one winger, ex Celt Gary Mackay Steven has had a few problems.

Reports indicate he was involved in a fracas at the weekendand ended up in the River Kelvin, before being rescued. He was suffering from hypothermia and investigations continue to find out what happened to him in Glasgows Sanctuary nightclub.

The Sanctuary is where an Irish nurse was abducted from and killed, you may remember the cctv footgae of her leaving the establishment.

No doubt their cameras were on at the weekend, and footage will be used to determine what actually happened…

We wish him well, however, and a speedy recovery.

Serious stuff now, and Celtic issued a statement which counters the governments view on the OBFA…

This is in response to the Scottish governments submission to the Justice Committee, in which they claimed Celtic were behind the Act, which is palpably untrue.

Keep an eye on the Celtic Trust website for updates…

Yesterday we showed you this picture…

I laughed out loud…

Welcome back Paddy. Regarding his indirect reference to King Kenny and the mystical Nº7 shirt at Celtic, I know that 7 was his permanent number at Liverpool but, although I was very small when Dalglish played for us in the seventies, I seem to remember him only very occasionally with 7 on his shorts. I think it was much more common to see him wearing the number 8,9 or 10. I’m sure someone on here would be able to clarify that much better than me. When we talk of the magical Nº 7 at Celtic in modern times obviously Jinky and Henrik spring to mind immediately as they are club legends. In my time as a teenager I loved how Davie Provan played.
HH

Reply to  Yoker Bhoy

Back then the number was relevant to what position you played that day it wasn’t a squad number allocated to a particular player like the modern era.
Ie if you played wide right you wore the No7 but the following week you migh wear the no9 playing up front.

I’m aware of that Charlie but the point I was trying to make was that Dalglish is not remembered exclusively as a Nº7 for us, although for a Liverpool fan he would be. Cheers.

You’re correct Yoker Bhoy,
Dalglish mostly wore no 8 , 9 …. sometimes 10 ; from memory I think he wore no 7 in his last season with us 76/77.
Like most Celtic teenagers at the time I idolised Dalglish . Interestingly I’ve read accounts from many fans of how exactly they felt when he left , and I’ve thought ” I could have written those exact same words myself” ; we all seemed to feel the same “hurt” .
The strange thing is that many still felt a bit of that hurt all these years later , and again my thoughts are ” I know what you mean “.
It’s a strange one , seemed to have a unique impact on Celtic fans of my generation.

Cheers jpm. I was completely gutted when Kenny left us in the summer of 77 which was part of a double blow I had to suffer as only a few weeks earlier Davie Cooper (I always had a soft spot for the Bankies as they were just down the road from me) left Clydebank to join the huns.

Reply to  Yoker Bhoy

Yoker Bhoy ,

wasn’t there a story of Stein trying to persuade Cooper to sign for us ?
We were consoled a year later though , when we signed Provan .
Cooper spent most of his Rangers years in Davie Provan’s shadow.

Re Dalglish , I was at his last competitive game for Celtic , the 77 SCF win over Rangers .
3 months later I was at what proved to be his last appearance for us , a friendly at Dunfermline .
I went home that night and told my Mother ” Kenny’s not leaving us , he was playing tonight ” ; only to wake up in the morning to the news that he’d agreed to sign for Liverpool right after that match.

Yoker Bhoy

Reply to  jpm 88

jpm,

I don’t recall Stein’s interest in signing Cooper but it’s very possible. He was a spectacular player and a decent down to earth bloke who tragically died in his late thirties due to a brain tumour. Both Cooper and Provan were top class wingers on their day and difficult to say which was the better of the two.
Re Kenny’s departure there are all kinds of colourful anecdotes of tic fans being so upset that they couldn’t go into work for a week and so on.

jpm 88

Reply to  jpm 88

Yoker Bhoy,

think Cooper was the more naturally gifted ,(I was behind the goal at Hampden when he scored THAT goal against Celtic) but Provan was just so consistent.A regular 7/8 out of 10 performer , game after game after game.
It may have also favoured Provan that he joined a Celtic on the rise again , whilst rangers were heading for a long decline at that same time.
Yes , I’ve heard people talk well of Davie Cooper , the man .

Yoker Bhoy

Spot on with that comparison jpm. Peter Weir of Aberdeen was another SPL winger of that time who could play a bit.

I think the Club is just highlighting the fact numerous Club legends have wore 7 so giving it Paddy is a bit of an honour.
Paddy would most likely associate Kenny with the No 7 as you say due to the Liverpool era.
Being English etc.

Reminds me of a conversation I had with some guys down here in England , Charlie ; they completely associated Dalglish with Liverpool , and Liverpool only.
It took a lot of persuasion to convince them that he was 26 when he left Celtic , and not some young kid like Nicholas.
They were genuinely surprised that he had played 6 seasons and won multiple trophies plus 50+ Scotland caps , whilst playing in the green and white hoops of Celtic.

My brother who was a regular at CP when Dalglish was there said Dalglish was a better player a Celtic than what he had seen at Liverpool.
He said the notion he somehow became much better down there was nonsense?
He was doing the same things at Celtic but the English media were ignorant of the fact.

Charlie ,

we all knew we had THE best player in Britain when he was with us ; that Keegan (Englands pin-up boy) couldn’t “lace his boots”.
6 months after going there , the Liverpool fans were agreeing with that .
Interesting to know your brothers thoughts/feelings re Dalglish in connection to my previous post on the impact of his leaving re the fans.
As I said , it seemed to have a unique impact on his fans , different to any other player leaving that I can recall.

My brother was cool with it just glad ofthe fact we had him fo so long and got the best of him.
He felt a great many were just bitter because of his background and the fact he was never a Tim to start with?
I was heartbroken he was my hero as a wean.
The only time I felt that pang in my gut again was when Henrik left.

Loved Dalglish, gutted when he left. No doubt IMO he went to a better football team at Liverpool. Hence European medals in his cupboard. The fact Liverpool fans ‘forgot’ Keegan after only one season shows the player Dalglish was.

Finding it difficult to get excited about a loan, knowing Man City can pull the plug at any time is hardly ideal. With the Van Dijk money surely we could sign him. We’ve got the cash, the player says he want to be at Celtic, yet there is no transfer. Something seems a bit off.

Our best 11, at this moment:
Gordon
Lustig/Simunovic/Bitton/Tierney
Brown/McGregor
Roberts/Rogic/Sinclair
Griffiths

In future:
Boyata for Bitton
Dembele and Griff to rotate
Sviatchenko and Armstrong to figure heavily.
Occasionally, I would play Griff and Dembele together up front in a 3-5-2:
Gordon
Lustig/Simunovic/Tierney
Roberts/Brown/Nchamb/McGregor/Sinclair
Griffiths/Dembele

upcoming fixtures:
Hamilton away
PSG home
Ross County home
Dundee away
Sevco away
Anderlecht away
Hibs home
Come on you Bhoys in Green

I would rather see Tierney at centre half and Miller full back, than Bitton. The 352 is one I would like to see, it would allow Brendan to keep his midfield W and with more up top we could have the right players in the right places to punish teams. Still not convinced by Lustig, he has played there a few times but doesn’t seem to improve.

Reply to  Monti

I’m picking a side from what we wil have available.
Ajer has shown a great deal of composure and ability for such a young player way beyond his age I think?
He’s been solid at CB Bar a few Mia placed passes in the games I have seen and can carry the ball out of defence with ease being primarily a MF by trade?
Plus the fact Rodgers obviously trusts him and rates him..as do I.
Boyata alongside Jozo has looked like a decent pairing to me proably our strongest at the Club so putting them 2 in I think is a no brainer.
I prefer a 3 at the back and given our need to play out from the back I think it makes sense to have the extra man back there giving the Keeper more options whilst allowing both Wing backs to start from further up the park. (Less running)

Devoy,
Are we just going to cast James Forrest aside because Paddy is here on loan?
Would that be fair?

Just for the record, if it was a straight choice between James and Paddy for a place in the team, then i would play Paddy, i think he has a more all rounded game to him than James has.
Having said that it’s up to James and Paddy to go for it and give Brendan a hard choice to make.
James has started the season very well and that shouldn’t be forgotten.

The reason we seem to be scrambling around in the final week of the transfer window is not entirely our fault?
Due to the fact UEFA has made the journey to the Group Stage/Money Pit of the CL a lengthy journey of 3 rounds for Clubs in our position ie Champions of an underfunded League has to be negotiated?
Getting over that final hurdle take you to the night of the 22nd of August.
This effectively means that we start targeting players GOOD ENOUGH for the Groups with only 8 days in which to complete any busines?
Throw in the fact we live over the Border to the richest League in World Football where the Clubs themselves are chucking 10s of millions round like confetti at a wedding then this task only becomes much harder.
We simply cannot compete with them on wages or over inflated transfer fees.
THAT’S A FACT
What we are looking at doing is picking up he fringe players at the best Clubs and trying to get them to come to a poor League by comparison to our neighbours?
We may we’ll have a chance at securing a Denaayer or someone in his position who are probably now desperate for a move and to get regular football again?
But it is not easy for all he reasons stated above.
We have CL football that is te carrot that and 60,000 of the best fans in football cheering you on under the lights and a decent boss in Rodgers who wants you to play expansive attacking football.
Fingers crossed we get a couple over the line this week.

I hope Boyata is back soon, wasn’t impressed with him under Delia but he added a bit last season. He is faster than Erik, scores more goals that Jozo but is prone to the odd mistake, like every other player,Ajer is all right but a bit off the finished article..

Brendan/Celtic should approach Liverpool see if we canny get Sakho on loan till January?
He gets CL and put in the shop window for free and we get a solid defender for said competition.
Surely he would prefer that to a fucking relegation battle at Palace?

Penny pinching? We have a squad of about 27 but only 11 can play at one time. The ones on the payroll can’t just be booted. Last year was a good year for the club, including achieving three tough draws in the CL. Simunovic and Sviatchenko were good enough for the CL (it was Toure featured in the 7-0 at Barca and I think was not much use to us overall)Take 11 good men and let them stay together for 3-5 years. Let them mould as a team and forget fuckin Neymer, Messi, etc. Nothing to do with money or celebrity. We have a good bunch that have yet to hit their stride.
Bringing in new players sets us back. New players? We already have them: Benyu, Kouassi, Aitchison and the injured Boyata and Dembele.
If you want to see team morale go all to hell have lots of big egos sitting on the bench.
Love the one(s) you’re with. It’ll be ok, even in the CL. Efe Ambrose is a better defender than any we have at the moment and we punted him.And yes, I was at the Juventus game. Lenny shouldn’t have played him. The lad was tired. Defensive blunders usually start with forwards who can’t or won’t track back but it’s the defenders who get the flack. Efe won everything in the air. Who is doing that for us now? I would also bring Mulgrew back for emergencies. Charlie always gave us 100% and most times was good enough. Charlie is best as a centre back but he could deputize for Tierney now and then. Finally, we don’t have the money to spend, spend, spend, and highly paid egos aren’t going to want to play for a mere 10-20 grand a week! If we’re so fuckin “Better Together” maybe some of our English comrades would invite us into their over-rated League and let us prove how better we are.
