Celtic Diary Monday August 28: Brendan Turns The Air Blue

After Celtic fought fatigue and a more than enthusiastic St. johnstone on Saturday with discipline and patience, Brendan Rogers wondered aloud, in the dressing room, with some dockyard language added for effect, if the Celtic support really did trust him.

He cleaned it up a wee bit for public consumption, telling reporters;

“You have to stay calm when you’re under pressure, not just the players but everyone outside. Or you can play Scottish football – just smash it up the pitch, and that hasn’t got you anywhere in 20-odd years.

“It is understandable that the supporters want to see the ball in the box, but I’ve said since I came up here, the quicker it goes forward the quicker it comes back at you.”

Rogers has impressed his style upon the players. It seems to be working, but the impatient nature of the support demanded the old style hoof it up and see what happens style, a style which is hit and miss at best, and although a patient and disciplined approach in the second half brought an equaliser, and created enough chances to win the game, it finished 1-1.

Craig Gordon made the match a handicap event when his casual pass out of defence found Steven MacLean almost too embarrassed to score, and with Tony Ralston playing him onside the Saints had got their noses in front.

MacLean admitted later that he thought he was offside..

“I thought I was offside, I’ll be honest. I was just taking the mick. I put in and turned round and they were saying ‘He’s given it’.

“I looked across and thought: ‘The linesman must be steaming’. I said to Willie (Collum): ‘You’ll book me if I kick it in the net’, so I put it in thinking that, but he gave it. Just as well I put it in.”

The golden rule is play to the whistle, and the defence got caught cold by not concentrating enough.

Simple as that.

It’s the second goal Celtic have conceded this season, and not surprisingly, there are calls to change the keeper, sign half a dozen defenders and go back to the Ho Hup style as opposed to the more simple and effective giving it to a guy in the same colour jumper as you.

Relax.

Come one, deep breath..

Relax.

After securing a champions League place and dreaming about the games to come against Bayern munich and Paris St Germain, a little dose of reality came back into our lives.

After the weekends games, Celtic now lie third in a one horse race, but we haven’t even reached the first fence yet.

The manager, who must be a little bewildered with the support this morning, summed it up…

“I can be nothing but proud of the team and everything they put into it. We always want three points but we accept the point.

“We have three wins and a draw in the league, we’re in the quarter-final of the League Cup and also qualified for the Champions League, so it’s been a great start to the season for us.

“The players, in the second-half, showed their heart, spirt and desire to not the lose the game. That’s something we’ve created here within the squad. Tommy and his team defended well but my players were absolutely brilliant. We did everything we could to get the win but we couldn’t so we’ll take the point.

“For the last 30 minutes, I thought the players were exceptional in the energy they showed and the quality. We could have scored one or two more. It was a mixture of some great defending by St Johnstone and their goalkeeper making some amazing saves.”

Credit has to go to St. Johnstone, they came to play football and had a go at Celtic.

No one who saw the game can deny it was entertaining, and no one really can fault the players for effort and spirit.

That never say die attitude got a point when none was forthcoming.

It showed that the Rogers style works, and had we returned to the old ways we’d probably have conceded another whilst all the players were in the opposition half waiting for a cross.

Keep the faith, keep the heid and keep smiling.

Right, shall we try to make some sense of the events anticipated for this final week of the transfer window ?

Erik Sviatchenko may not be going anywhere after all.

Rivaldo Coetzee has a couple of bones fused together in his foot that previous medicals had failed to pick up on. It doesn’t seem to have affected his ability, but after the Derk Boerrigter affair, anyone who so much as has plukes at the time of the medical is going to be refused a contract.

Its a shame, but maybe he’s been told to go away, get it sorted, and give us a ring when he’s better…

So big Erik may well come riding in on a white horse to save the defence…

Jozo the Bozo is still wistfully looking at an A-z of Burnley, and his absence yesterday, and then the international break means he won’t have much in the way of game time should he stay to compete in the champions League…

But its not an issue. He wants to go.

Not that it matters, there is always a plan B.

The Patrick Roberts saga will finally end this week.

Thats the facebook page of the company that represents him. So they claim, anyway, or so someone claims.

But I think we’ll wait until he talks to the club website about what happened.

Whatever problem that was holding up the move seems to have been sorted, but again, there’s no word on whether its a loan, a permanent deal or he’s just getting himself a season book.

I’d be surprised if it was a loan. Too much effort has gone into it for it to be a loan.

The manager will be looking for another couple of players as well.

That should go without saying, and as usual the last to find out who they are will be the mainstream media.

For the first time in years, we might actually watch the last day events unfold with optimism, instead of horror.

As long as we don’t sign some dud from the EPL on a two year deal when he’s at the end of his career that’ll do me.

After the Ross County -“rangers ” game yesterday, Ibrox manager Pedro Caixinha got a bit of a hard time from former Celt Chris Sutton, who questioned the Portuguese’s claim about having the best squad in Scotland.

Thats his new improved best squad, not the one he sold off this summer.

Caixinha , clearly rattled , warbled a bit about it being what he believed, and he’d say the same even if he was Ross County manager, but when asked which of the Celtic players wouldn’t get into his squad, he said he didn’t care about Celtic.

Which presumably means that his players can now wear green boots again.

Interestingly, it seemed that this was the first non Level 5 scripted interview given by the Govan Guardiola, and he couldn’t handle it…

However, his team picked up a creditable three points in Dingwall, and they could kick on from there and secure a top six place.

Aberdeen lead the table, with maximum points from four games, and St. Johnstone are in second on goal difference.

Celtic lie third, but are nicely placed on the shoulder to take advantage of any slip ups.

After an exhausting, both physically and mentally , start the the season, thats not as bad as some would have you believe…

Someone else was a little bit tired, and perhaps emotional last night..

Gary Mackay Steven is the name linked to the story, and he’s not the first person to get drunk and fall into a river. He won’t be the last, and lets just hope that whatever he wanted to get out of his system has now been blown away, and he can get back to work.

Speaking of work…the dangers of giving up your day job to concentrate fully on writing about football on the interweb were revealed over the weekend..

Probably a parody, but funny nonetheless, and to be honest its made me think I missed a trick somewhere when the kids were younger.

This guy knows a trick or two..

With financial whizz kids such as this fellow in the support, it really is a shock that they ever allowed their club to fall into liquidation.

Or this one, who clearly knows his football, but with a name like his, again, one wonders if he is real…

Maybe I’m just paranoid, all these fake names, fake stories and fake social media accounts.

I can’t be the only one suffering…

On Saturday, we offered this for your perusal..

BR got the initial set-up wrong on Saturday…but to his credit…he spotted the problem and changed it.
Brown and Ntcham don’t work well together…and tend to slow things up….and this suited the Perth side to a tee.
There will be games when these two will be needed together…but Saturday wasn’t one of them.
I said to my mate after 30 mins…”I hope he changes things at half-time and brings on Armstrong and McGregor “….
Based on that…I’m now after his job…..:0)
At the end of the day…we were so unlucky not to take all 3 points.
I also watched the game from Dingwall yesterday…and couldn’t believe how bad Scottish football could be.
Some of the play was embarrassing…along with the Sevco support.
These peepul are seriously sad.
Ross County were absolute pish…and Sevco weren’t far behind.
The 3-1 score-line was a joke.

Calling it like I see it – Brendan made an arse of it on Saturday.

The Keeper to Defence to Keeper and repeat ploy was mind numbing for 45 minutes. We had NO midfield whatsoever for the defenders to pass to with Broon and Ntcham stationary and Forrest and Sinclair not in the game. Rogic looked lost and Griffiths was in Brattbakk land with nowhere to go against a tight deep and well drilled St Johnstone line.

Brendan could have and should have changed it earlier as he must have seen what we all were watching – a team dead on their feet going nowhere.

I still await an explanation why our ONLY centre half was on the bench and our right back was placed in the centre whilst a young boy was put up against the leagues in form striker in O’Halloran.

If Brendan wants to chastise us then maybe first he should be asking what his team were doing ( or not doing) for 45 mins under his selection and tutelage.

Desi in games like these and there will be plenty to come you need wide men wide men that co past defenders and stretch them as happened in the 2nd half when Sinclair came into the game,in Forest/Hayes we have 2 players that are no better than average and shouldn,t be played again, their right back was only a boy but he had the legs of KT who looked knackered,we are and have been lacking in quality in several areas for a couple of years now it hasn,t been addressed we will pay for it,Armstrong not the answer in mid-field we need a proper creator in there,if Jozo wants to go then let him go now and get a proper replacement in.

Think bitton was playing with his moon boot on, and he was one of our best, thank fuck for McGregor who I’ve personally run down as being not quite good enough for Europe yet. Think the boys were still leg heavy from Astana. You can’t blame players to leave for better money, like Jozo it’s a short career, though it has been proven that players leaving Celtic don’t always flourish. Think Jozo is good enough for serie A or epl, up his wages or something, the way things are he can hold the club to ransom. Probably get pelters for this, I watched him game last night and I don’t think their back line is worse than ours, we need to buy some defenders. Full stop

Was at the game on Saturday, and like a lot of fans got annoyed at the passing at the back. It wasn’t the tactic that bothered me, it was the lethargic, careless way the passes were being made. No crisp, snappy passes. No sense of urgency.
The manager said afterwards the players were fatigued, and there maybe something in that, but after the crowd got on their backs the players started to play as they normally do and we nearly got a winner. We may have got one if we’d started the second half the way we finished it

Belting diary today again Ralph that CIA find is a beauty.
I have to say how impressed I’ve been with Brendan in the media since he came to Celtic but this week he’s shown some real class dealing with some tricky situations.
He takes responsibility for the good and bad before and after games with the Gordon mistake being a prime example.
It’s not natural for a keeper to be passing it out of defence when under pressure especially an older guy like Gordon who has been blootert go it up the Park for years with instructions to clear the danger first and foremost.
That aside though I do think It’s probably confirmed to Brendan that we do need to Addres this if he wants his keepers to continue to play it out from the back?
Evidently he doesn’t think DeVries is the answer otherwise he would be his no1 surely?

Charlie, keepers these days have to be good with their feet especially if the team plays with a flat back four. Gordon is shocking. Another brilliant shot stopper, mark bosnich was the same, that’s why man.u punted him. Gordon’s distribution is terrible, if he was just an outfield player he would struggle in the amateur leagues

As I’ve said before, the goalkeeper and centre halfs are, almost always, the worst players on the ball, when they have the ball more than any other team-mate it shows one of two things: A team under severe pressure or a team with lots of possession but bereft of attacking ideas. We fall into the latter with the lack of movement in the midfield and a lack of numbers up front.

Jozo has never exactly excelled for us as a defender, nor has Sviatchenko. Back to the drawing board with those two. Boyata has improved to become our best defender and can also score goals from corners. For now, put Lustig in the middle and give Gamboa some match time. Not sure yet about Ralston. It will have to be Ajer or Bitton for now to partner Lustig. When Boyata returns, Lustig and Boyata in the middle. Find out about Denayer as well. Brendan can get him back up to scratch.

Reply to  Devoy45

Lustig is not CB material IMO.
If they are fit then I would go with Jozo Boyata and Ajer in a three until replacements can be signed.
Use Erik Biton and Tierney as backup CBs meanwhile.
I think Gamboa and Lustig should be rotated in the RB slot with a view to bringing Ralston in as their permanent replacement in time.

Overall in the second half we should have won by a few, but the first half was leaderless. Brown looks tired and should be rested, the defensive set up, what is going on with Jojo.

I have a modicum of sympathy for Jozo regarding his situation because this time last Season we were looking at offloading him to Torino and it fell through.
I think this is the point he must have thought right first sign of interest and I’m away?
He’s a solid defender ,not the worlds best but still capable of a decent level of play when fit and on his A game.
The fact the Manager has obviously decided to move him down the pecking order as he’s evidently requested to go is by the by but I’m fairly certain he’d still put a 100% shift in if required?
I agree with Desi on this if he’s fit and on the bench then I see no sense in putting Lustig in there rather than Jozo?
If not then keep him away from the team altogether surely?
Think we are over complicating a fairly straightforward situation myself.
Play him till he goes or simply don’t involve him at all if you are sure he’s for the off.

So the manager lashes out when the support are getting a little bit worried about lack of investment and a sense of complacency and lethargy creeping inot the team. Tough. The main frustrations are with activities off the field not with a poor performance at the weekend. The first half on Saturday was brutal as was the manner of the goal. And please don’t try and spin this as supporters not understanding the intricacies of professional football. Celtic have had weeks, evn months to sort out replacements for Dembele and Boyata (christ, he is now the saviour) And now look like they are going to lose Jozo, our best defender and clearly Big Erik doesn’t want to be there either (we have known about this for months) This is very poor. And Brendan spitting the dummy does not change this.

The fact we only secured Champions League fitba last week and the finances that come with it hasa massive bearing on the level of player we can hope to sign.

I put it up to remind folk that we are on the up as a Club because I feel for whatever reason there seems to be a great deal of negativity in the air at the moment?
There are going to be games where we struggle especially after such a horrendous trip to Asia of all places?
The fact remains though we could have and probably should have still won the game on Saturday even though we were far from our best.
Our best being way better than anyone else in Scotland of course.
We are in a position of strength and signings will come as and when we get them over the line.

It’s an overall reflection on where we are as a Club.
We are well placed to invest in some quality but as we all know these things are getting more difficult as the money rich teams over the border cherry pick the best players at ridiculously high prices.
We only found out after the Astana game that we were going to be in the Champions League so therefore it would make sense to imagine the leve of target will have increased slightly?
We get Roberts over the line that would be a start.

You can only involve the keeper in a passing game providing he is capable as a ball player to do this. Gordon clearly doesn’t have that skill. That doesn’t make him a bad keeper, but the defenders need to stop using him as a get out of gaol free card. Especially in such a tight situation. Even the very best keepers would have given that ball a boot out of the danger area. It was a deplorable piece of play.

We may not get a repeat treble. But we are in the CL and give all of this team all our support.
C’mon Brendan,C’mon the Celtic.

“you can play Scottish football – just smash it up the pitch, and that hasn’t got you anywhere in 20-odd years”

Sorry Brendan but Big Jan against Man United and Tony Watt against Barcelona were from goalkeepers playing it direct rather than messing about with it, even Forrest’s goal against Astana came from Ntcham playing it long.

Playing it direct, when apt, has led to some of the biggest results in our recent history, passing it around in our box led to the goal against us at the weekend.

Brendan putting his hand up for Gordon’s terrible gaffe seems ridiculous to me. I think Gordon ,although unforgivable ,did that in a petulant manner because of the makeshift back four in front of him, he’s had a gutful because we can’t tie down our better players. We are in a mini crisis and Brendan is giving the press lip service, hopefully it gets sorted. We have players seemingly punching below their wait a phone call away from double their wages. Who wouldn’t

Brian, I was sort of joking. The mini crisis is the non signings of cbs. I’m sure it will get sorted

Scottish football not got anywhere for 20 years or more?Think I’ll ask MON, Lenny and Wee Chesney how they got on in Europe. BR can sometimes be a Craig Gordon, don’t be fooled because he has more rabbit than Sainsburys…

Both surreal and idiotic decisions, any goalie I’ve ever played with has been a sandwich short of a picnic, other than that bet 365 has something to do with it, or in Gordon’s case, I know it’s a stretch, has purposely sclaffed the ball in disgust. And why didn’t ralston make amends and dart up the field to play McLean off. Maybe some phone calls from Malaysia and a few boys with extra moolah in their skyrockets ? Seriously it was a blunder from Gordon I think but it looked contrived. I’ve coached women’s football and never witnessed that, I’m talking about fat chics with multiple piercings

ralston ballwatching, Gordon needs to be playing 5 a sides and practising passing drills. No conspiracies at cp

It’s not so much the poor ball out as that can happen but then standing there with his hand up rather than trying to stop the shot.

If it goes in then argue the toss about offside but play to the whistle!

Cha,partly correct but the half hearted, side foot “kick” not out was a total joke and it’s about time players start taking responsibility.Gordon’s kicking to the wings either goes to the player about head height or out the park leading to the fans in those areas becoming agitated so BR,take note,be more honest about the whole situation which isn’t all of your making but don’t mug us off.

unbeaten in scotland, treble, 2 group stages and plenty of money in the bank

No problem bgbhoy just shivering with anticipation on what’s going to be the next move. I’m not at the coalface over where I live, and rely on internet news for updates. I’m sure fans of other clubs go through the same angst. Not really bothered about Gordon. In fact I think he is one of the best goalies we’ve had tbh. Think it’s a fans prerogative to moan a bit. What will happen will happen, my words or say mean fuck all.

Just hope that the club realise there are some good minds in our support base who will expect transparency in all matters to do with the club especially those who are paying money, think that’s fair

First half was poor anyone would think these boys had been away on a trip with a 5 hour time difference.
For goodness sake, Celtic are usually a bi off the piece after playing away in Europe I actually once saw Paul Mc Stay play poorly for 90 minutes (how often did that happen) after a European trip.
I can’t believe the pelters Gordon gets, Ralston is young but he was at fault for the second pass and playing the guy onside, he will learn to get out. Rodgers system works well so far an treble and unbeaten at in Scotland since May 2016.

What is the condition called when things are going so well people can’t wait to whinge, Catholic guilt, Original sin has a lot to answer for!

St Johnstone deserve credit for trying to pay football an d take advantage of Celtic travel, some how i think we will be there out there about hen the prizes are being handed out.The one criticism I agree with is we need centre half cover, we haven’t looked stable at the back since Boyata got injured. Does Jozo really want to leave,he always seems to be linked with other clubs. Maybe Ajer needs an extended run but then the boo boys need to be patient with him.
