Celtic Diary Thursday August 17: When A Plan Comes Together

Anyone who has read the Invincibles book, by David Friel, will not have been surprised by the performance and result last night.

However, even they would have been loathe to predict that everything the manager and coaches have been working on could come together so soon.

In sweeping aside Astana, a side Celtic struggled to beat last year, the club announced their return to the big time.

5-0.

In a play off tie usually fraught with nerves and mistakes, this Celtic side took it all in their stride and put themselves in the group stages of the champions League, barring, of course a catastrophe in Khazakstan.

In five games in the competition so far, Celtic have scored twelve goals and conceded none.

And we were worried about the defence ?

With Nir Beckenbauer to call on, there was nothing to worry about.

A couple of early misses had us worrying that it was going to be one of those nights, but in fact lady luck took her seat in the stand and cheered us on herself this time.

Two deflections, a goal scored when the referee decided not to halt play after a clash of heads, and most importantly, a goalkeeper who was oblivious to the ball coming across him from the left meant that all the hard work-including an astonishing 498 completed passes, wasn’t wasted.

All five goals were scored more or less the same way, which hardly ever happens at this level, but it wasn’t down to errors, and although luck maybe played a part.

The five goal margin was down to the relentless way Celtic kept driving at the Khazaks. Nobody hid, nobody got tired and everybody played for the team.

In fact, you’ll be hard pushed to find a better goal than that of James Forrest anywhere. The turn and pass from Ntcham, the collect and pass from Griffiths and the finish from the winger.

Outstanding stuff.

No one on here predicted the 5-0 score, though a few did anticipate 4-0. What maybe we didn’t take into account was that this team doesn’t sit back, ever, no matter how comfortable it looks at 2, 3, or even 4-0.

However, one man who knows his football, and who has read the Invincibles book, did make an astonishing prediction on twitter at half time…

If they keep coming at us it’ll be 5-0

Image result for blowing his own trumpet

Last night showed us everything that is great about our club.

The support…

The players..

The performance..

And the reaction…

Image result for big grin gif

Elsewhere, however, the campaign to clip our wings may have begun…

Derek Rae: Rangers vs Hibs should have been televised, TV deal must be changed

“rangers ” and Celtic are limited to four televised home games a season. Thats  how its always been.

However, one way to clip our wings and prevent us moving further ahead would be to rewrite the tv deal and have more of our home games screened live.

That terrifies Celtic. They think they would lose matchday money, but not as much as of stge two of this plan is implemented, the reintroduction of sharing gate money.

You might think i’m wearing a tin foil hat at this point, and might argue it will never happen, but trust me, they’re thinking about it.

Neil Doncaster is the puppet of the other clubs, he doesn’t have an original thought in his head, and he has offered to meet fans to discuss the shennanigans of the last decade or so.

Oddly enough, he’s never accepted my invitation for a chat.

Which is still open, by the way.

Actually, you’d think the other clubs would be grateful. If Celtic do qualify, they’ll each pick up around a quarter pof a million pounds, which you would think, being more than they get from the league sponsors, they -and the press-would be happy about.

Hope we are spared “great for Scottish football” chat. Great for Celtic. A widening chasm not at all great for others.

While we are all happy about whats happening on the pitch, keep an eye on whats happening off it.

Jimmy Calderwood announced yesterday that he’s suffering from early onset Alzheimers..

JIMMY’S DEMENTIA BATTLE

Scottish football legend Jimmy Calderwood reveals he has been battling dementia for two years and is a ‘bit forgetful with some names’

“It was actually my partner, Yvonne who noticed I was getting a wee bit forgetful and she insisted that I go and get checked out.

“I suppose I am a typical West of Scotland man of my generation and the last thing I think about is going to the doctor with anything I think of as just being minor.

“But I am grateful to her because now I know I have it I can do what I can to fight against it.”

He’s been battling it for two years, and now he tells us ?

With Calderwood rumoured to be the subject of all sorts of investigations during his time at Dunfermline, and his connections with the Murray Masterton financial cartel, perhaps there is something else he might want to talk about.

Before he forgets ?

Alzheimers/Dementia is a terrible condition, as i know from personal experience with a close family member, but its also very difficult to diagnose early on, and so perhaps I can offer some hope and comfort to Mr. Calderwood in his struggle…

Ernest Saunders, one of the ‘Guinness 4’ was sentenced to 5 years in
jail following his conviction for fraud in 1990. He was released just 10
months into a 5 year stretch due to being diagnosed with incurable dementia.

Now dementia as many know is a terrible disease with no cure. Not so for
Mr Saunders who not only made a miraculous recovery so good that he
formed a consortium to buy a football club but he is still fit and
active 25 years on.

Apparently, he only had “depression “. Or a cough. Or something.

The point is he was diagnosed, and now he’s all better.

Hopefully, Mr Calderwood will recover in the same way.

John? John?! Jo-hn?? JOHN?!?!?!
Perhaps no misery today, wouldn’t that be sweet?
Wonderful result last night, and that was earned despite us not even playing to our full potential, excellent room for growth with this group of special players. They pressed us really well in the 1st half especially, but after an hour they looked shattered. When their captain and left back is taking a pop from 40 yards and free kicks sail out for goal kicks you know they have no hope.
A few comments about a good ref last night regarding the advantage played after Tom’s injury which is fair enough. Was there a replay of the Brown booking because at the game I was raging; he didn’t give a free kick, in fact we got a free kick awarded within about ten seconds. Then he looks at their player holding his face and books Brown? For what? The jungle side linesman had a couple of dodgy decisions as well, but I’ll settle for the overall refereeing performance being acceptable rather than good.
A bit of recruitment and tie down a player or two, and some solid professional performances over Killie, Astana and Hibs will take me into an unwelcome international break with a very welcome big smile on my face!!

If we get fined for that fanny being on the park, he should be made to pay it.

BTW. Re Calderwood. I also thought his announcement about POSSIBLE early dementia was interesting in its timing.

A suspicious person might think he was trying to cover his tracks.

What on earth could he be worried about?

Maybe he should be questioned before he forgets everything.

Fitba. managers with cash in the attic, burning a hole in their pockets, will be salivating at last nights performance, every one of the players being scrutinised to see if they can be bought on the cheap. Yuv gotta laugh at the figures being reported if you are daft enough to read the papers. Players doon sooth mentioned in the 20/30/40 mill plus and ours under £10 mill. You’ve gotta laugh at there cheap scate mentality and approach, the sort of “Burke and Hare” grave robber mentality.

Gerry
Reply to  corktim

That was one aspect in the first half to be fair cork, particularly Nir trying a difficult pass that maybe wasn’t on, there were one or two interceptions.
Brendan touched on this, being “spooked”; I think it comes from the fans as sometimes we pass across the back 4 or via the keeper and you get a collective noise from the stands that it’s impossible to describe via text in this box but I’m sure you can hear it in your heads. If that transfers to the players they may become edgy and less decisive, but this team seem to be so strong mentally at the moment that they continue to play, even accepting the ball under pressure, and ensuring we retain good, if at times ineffectual, possession. We may well be caught out and punished at a higher level, but I like the courage of the players to keep trying to do the right thing to the best of their ability.

Young McGregor epitomises this l feel Gerry he always shows for the ball no matter how good the opposition or how big the tie is?
Hence why I think he is going to be a key player at Celtic in a couple of years.

No misery at all if it is me the post is aimed at. However, I would still like to see better preparation for these games with investment made to better our chances at qualification rather than wait for the guarantee of the cash. That would be what a CL team would do. But that was exceptional and I will eat as much humble pie with jelly and ice-cream of course as is dished up to me. However, I still believe I am right and Celtic as a club do not act like a CL club, every single year. The Armstrong/Roberts situations are indicative of this. AS Brendan has said himself it is beneficial to get your business done quickly and get CL players in as quickly as possible. My nerves are shredded every year as we always enter thee games with key personnel missing. And the bit of business we did do early, Johnny Hayes doe not even make the bench (I have to admit I don’t know if he was injured or what). However if this is being wrong and I don’t ever want to be right . Hail! Hail!

498 passes is not really astonishing. Bit rubbish actually. We average 648 this season. Posession is obviously good inthat you can’t score if you don;t have the ball. But it is whatyou do with it which is why I look at chances created etc.

You are correct to point out that all the breaks went our way last night, in fact for 4 goals:
2 o.g. where shots were going wide
a tackle in central midfield that richochette perfectly for Sinclair to run onto directly on goal plus weak attempt to save
and the one the ref should have stopped due to the clash of heads.

The rub of the gree rarely goes your way to the extent of 4 goals. But undoubtedly we were pateint, calm and relentless. Wew looked like a mature and competent team at this level . Which is a big step forward.

HH

You have to take into account the level of opposition and whether they take the game to you or sit back.
Astana are not a bad side they did take it to us more than most of previous opposition this Season have so to say it was rubbish is doing our team a bit of a disservice l think bud.
We controlled the game for the most part and our passing was an improvement on previous showings this season l thought.

Reply to  Charlie Saiz

I was being flippant – i know!

Doc

I’m not too bothered by the number of passes, to me its about the effectiveness. For example:

Ineffective passing, ~40 mins, our defence strung together a dozen passes when Astana didn’t even have a player in our half which led to nothing.

Effective passing, Ntcham gets the ball 15 yards into our half, ignores an obvious pass to Armstrong and instead plays it long to Griffiths between the CB and LB, which led to the Forrest goal.

Quality over quantity.

I’m laughing to myself given the hours I spend on measuring Packing etc because possession in and of itself is not a reliable metric. Have a look over at celticbynumberscom.ipage.com and hopefully the analysis gets beyond the same obvious metrics.

Couple of thoughts from last night

Outstanding. Dynamic. Controlled.

We got some luck in some of the goals, but we earned it by refusing to sit back or play cagey.

Griffiths offers so much up front, stretching the game and making space for others, as well as great passes for two goals.

After his first goal Sinclair came back to life in a big way and scared them sh*tless

Forrest had a really good game apart from his gorgeous goal

Bitton strolled it, it ownt always be so easy but he was excellent

Ntcham looks a great addition, neat and tidy, composed, and when it was on ability to hit a long pass

Brown bossed the game, winning he ball back, keeping it ticking over

KT is a machine, he gives s great attacking options from slightly deeper

Simo – dominant, a few stray passes, but won all his challenges

So, yeah, hard to imagine a more enjoyable play off game, its just a shame the format is changing just when we are getting good at it! HH

His man management skills regarding Nir Bitton after the final whistle were second to none.

He must have watched Ntcham performance last night and drew breath?
The strength on the ball, composure under pressure and his range of passing was a joy to behold.
If he signs his deal then I suspect these two may well spur each other on to raising their games big time.
Nothing wrong with competition in a squad it keeps it competitive and healthy.
Armstrong will have to up his game if and when he does sign so plenty to get excited about this Seasonas it will only benefit us in the long run.
I hope he signs.

I have seen some reports of the meeting between Doncaster and Joe O’Rourke yesterday and I have to confess that I am disappointed in what has been reported. The SPFL laid out their position clearly but there seems to have been no push back by Joe. Maybe that has not been reported and those in the know will have further info?
According to the reports Doncaster was not put under pressure on any key points.
It is important that the right person(s) and agency is found to press both the SFA and the SPFL on integrity issues. If every Tom, Dick and Harry try to pursue this, then their efforts will be easily deflected. There needs to be a focal point and that person needs to be able to argue issues at a fine detail level. I thought Joe was the answer to this but we need to be sure that he has the necessary skills to deal with the likes of Doncaster, Regan, and MacKenzie.
We are only get one shot at this, it is important to get it right first time.
How did the match go last night? Anyone heard?
Personally, I think having Bitton and Forrest in the team can only be bad. Was I proved right?

Don’t want to go overboard so early in his Celtic career and possibly jinx him but like Ewan I thought Ntcham reminded me of the Maestro. That is a big pressure to put on any player especially this early but something about him just made me think of Paul. Imagine if the guy turns out to be even half as good as the Maestro and we have him for four years at least. Still some work to be done. Forrest blows hot and cold, I really hope he can be more consistent as there is no doubt he can be a player. Personally I like Nir Bittonbauer but he is not a long term solution at CH. That is too risky. We should be trying to eliminate the risky as much as possible. We need to be thinking about getting out of the groups regularly, never mind just qualifying. We are not ambitious enough. Too much small thinking.

Reply to  john

Bitton could well have a future at CB and as cover for Brown under Brendan time will tell of course but his recent performance against Rosenborg and Astana will have done him no harm at all I don’t think.
Defending isn’t that difficult if you keep it simple.
Awareness is his Achilles at the moment not ability.

Where’s the petition?

I’d imagine Monti’s more a Groucho than Karl fan.

Weered, of course, could be a double entendre.

Compare and contrast the way the London media begins to take an interest in the somewhat uncertain situation surrounding Millwall FC and the “nothing to see here, folks” tack taken by the brethren in Scotland regarding an even greater scandal:

Just a quick point on the clash of heads. Astana player was booked after regaining his feet so the ref saw it as a foul but played the advantage. Was a bad one though and could have been worse as the 5 minutes stoppage time showed. It’s just as BR says… sit in and we will find a way or come out and press and we’ll get in behind. In the last quarter Griff and Sinclair could have been in more.

The state of this, all down to luck and not a good word to say about the team, hurting much?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40936642

“Sinclair ran through from an offside position”

A. Couldn’t be offside as played by Astana player.

B. Would’ve been onside if put through by teammate.

Watching it back I was astonished to see that Sinclair would’ve been clearly onside if one of our players had played it through, as I thought in real time he was clearly offside.

Proves how difficult it can be for linesman who only get one view and in real time?

God? There is no god. Never was. Never will be.

Thought go out to all those suffering in Barcelona.

Once again another atrocity, another terrible situation perpetrated all in the name of some nonentity.

Makes me sick.
