Celtic Diary Tuesday August 15: Its All The Rage

Those of you have given up on Patrick Roberts joining Celtic before tomorrows Astana clash might well be right.

Those of you who have given up on Roberts joining Celtic this month are wrong.

Have a little patience, there’s still a few details that need sorting out. It’s like we’ve been saying. Manchester City are playing hardball.

The “Girona Threat ” has surfaced, which is where the English club send their surplus talent, but if olivier Ntcham can resist it, then so can Patrick Roberts.

The transfer merry go round is a strange one. Take this quote from Sion defender and captain Reto Zeigler.

He is been at the centre of a row with his club for a couple of months after he commented on offers he had received from Real Betis and….Celtic;

“That’s true. But before I meet with these two clubs, I will be working with the leaders of Sion. In the next two weeks I’ll know more.

“The offers (from Celtic and Betis) also honour me. But without wanting to sound bigheaded: I think I deserve it, I’ve played a good season.”

Oddly enough, we never heard of that one at the time, though it was in the Swiss newspapers.

We do keep hearing about Danny Ings, the Liverpool forward who played for Rodgers previously, and who has suffered a couple of injuries that have stalled his career.

Perhaps a short term loan to provide cover and to help his fitness, but I’d be surprised if it was anything more than that.

Say about a fortnight or something.

Then there’s the link with Miquel Nelom of Feyenoord. Or, to give him his full name Paddy Miquel Nelom. The young left back/centre half has been “tracked ” by Celtic , according to the Herald, but not anyone else.

All this transfer specualtion is noted today because one or two supporters seem to be panicking about the lack of top class cover in central defence and in attack.

There have been a couple of injuries, and all of a sudden, fans are clamouring for Rodgers to go out and spend big money ahead of the most crucial tie of the season.

Yeah, chuck a new centre half in alongside Simunovic. One that you signed the week before.

That would make everything alright.

What is is what is.

Nir Biton may have had a momentary lapse the other day, but its nothing to worry about.

Up front there isn’t a top class striker in the world who would come to Celtic and pay third fiddle to Dembele and Griffiths.

Or even an ambitious young one.

We’re stuck with what we have for this game, and as the team have only conceded once in seven games, and replied with seventeen goals, I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.

After all, we can always count on plenty of support in the media..( Evening times )

Astana out for revenge after losing to Celtic a year ago

They asked a guy who only joined them two months ago for some insight into the club…

Hungarian International Laszlo Kleinheisler has Celtic in his sights just two months after arriving at the club, though he is aware of the task ahead for his new side.

“I believe I have signed for a very good team. As well as it being a beautiful city where I have settled in well thanks to a group of kind and helpful people, it is an ambitious club.

“Previously I had only played in the Europa League qualifiers during my time in Hungary with Videoton. These games coming up against Celtic will be a great platform and opportunity to show what we can do on the European stage.

“I am always very motivated when it comes to massive games like these. I’m aware of what happened last year with the last-minute goal. Perhaps some of my team-mates will feel they owe Celtic for that one! We certainly want to show that we deserve to play in the Champions’ League group stages.”

You can see why sometimes a team is described by the media as an “unknown quantity “-it’s because they can;t be arsed doing some real research and reporting.

Astana beat Legia Warsaw in the last round, and the danger is that they are now becoming a little more adept at negotiating these high pressure two legged ties than they were last year, when Celtic squeezed past them in the third qualifying round.

But then again, so are Celtic…

The Rosenborg result shows how much the team have improved mentally and physically. There is now not only a desire to win, but a belief in themselves and the players around them.

They trust the manager, and the manager trusts them to do the job he asks.

For confirmation of this, watch the reaction of the manager when James Forrest scored the winner against Rosenborg.

He merely applauds and nods, in a sort of “there it is ” , like a man who knew something was going to happen, but not exactly when.

Whereas we, as supporters, probably allowed ourselves a little more exubarence.

Thats the difference between last years campaign and this years.

We’re not making it up as we go along this time.

We’re sticking with the plan.

And with these guys…

Position Celtic players
Goalkeepers Gordon, de Vries
Defenders Simunovic, Bitton, Tierney, Lustig, Ajer, Ralston, Miller, Boyata, Sviatchenko, Gamboa
Midfielders Brown, Sinclair, Armstrong, Hayes, Ntcham, Benyu, McGregor, Forrest, Henderson, Kouassie
Forwards Rogic, Griffiths, Dembele, Nesbitt, Miller, Aitchison, Cifti

Hang on, Ciftci ?

Nadir Ciftci ?

In the Champions League squad ?

Are we about to see the greatest comeback since Lazarus ?

Image result for no gif

Many are suggesting a two or three goal win will be needed to make the tie safe. I’d be happy just not to concede, but of course a win would be nice.

Due to the complications of travelling so far west, the Khazak side will have their body clocks a wee bit disrupted by the long flight and the five hour time difference.

They are five hours ahead of us, meaning when the game kicks off they’ll think its a quarter to one in the morning, and they’ll probably have gone to bed .

They are quite thankful its Celtic they’re playing, and not the new club from the other side of the city, where they’d be about three hundred years ahead, which is a little much to ask even the best sports scientist to compensate for.

As before, the manager is quietly getting the preparation done, and there’s no need for any fuss.

Do you remember that advert years ago when that big fat orange man went around scaring people ?

Image result for Ally McCoist

No, not that one..

This one..

Image result for tango ad

The advert was pulled because members of the public suddenly found it hilarious to go around slapping people, and the company behind the product, Tango orange, decided they didn’t want an array of law suits.

We’re hearing reports that a similar craze is sweeping the world as people are being tormented by highly offensive earcupping, and there was even a massive revenge attack by “rangers ” supporters on Neil Lennon, the irresponsible idiot who began this carnage..

Some people are even taking it further than that..

Image result for old lady cupping ears

The police are stretched, unable to cope with the constant demand for help and protection..

It’s not the only craze. There is talk also of ladies showing their contempt towards people by emulating the Partick Thistle mascot, but I’m fucked if i can find them.

I’ve looked for hours.

Why can’t we all be friends, like in the old days ?

Why can’t we stop ridiculing each other ?

We should acknowledge not only what we achieve, but what others have achieved…

Great deeds should be immortalised…

We should be nice to each other. no one deserves abuse because of who he or she is.

That goes especially for Anthony Stokes…

First he attacked an Elvis impersonator, now he attacks Rangers impersonators…..a clear trend emerging.

No one is better than anyone else, no matter what they try to tell you…

The caption yesterday showed another craze which was once popular in Glasgow.

Good stuff Ralph!

I agree with you on the transfer front (& have the same thoughts about Paddy – blame City not Celtic). Also, as much as we’d all like to see some extra cover up-front & at centre back, in the real world there simply aren’t enough any quality players within our budget who will come to Celtic without the guarantee of CL football, so – whether we like it or not- it’s not realistic to expect any big signings unless/until we qualify.

Brendan really has no choice but to do the best he can with what we have, but I don’t think he needs US to tell him that the Astana match is (arguably) the most important of this season. Sure, it’s a dangerous gamble we’d much rather do without, but I genuinely feel that the injuries to our 2 best strikers & lack of cover at CB, are down to bad luck rather than bad planning.

At the moment we are not a credible champions league team. We have 6 recognised first team defenders chasing 4 places, 2 of them are currently injured meaning we have 1 proper centre half going into a season defining game who will be paired with a teenager or a midfielder who nobody thought would get a game this season, and who this weekend let a Thistle player get in front of him in the box and then fouled him.

We might still go through against Astana but let’s face it, we shouldn’t be going into games like this with only one centre half, it’s not good enough at this level, if we do qualify and try this nonsense against a proper CL team they’ll rip us a new one, and if (god forbid) anything happened to Kieran as well, we might as well not show up.

I’m sure Brendan Rodgers is aware of this and there’s probably all sorts of reasons and plans and contingencies and blah blah, but the fact remains, if we want to be taken seriously as a CL team then we need to have a proper squad of players who can cover every position, as it stands, a knock in training for KT and we could be facing Real Madrid in a few weeks with 1 centre half and no left back.

Izaguirre was sold on the proviso that Hayes Gamboa and Miller can all play the Left Back role.
I would tend to agree with all of the above but the simple fact of the matter is we are financially hamstrung in a League that does warrant or justify 2 full squads of first team picks like for like?
We may be a big fish in a wee pond in Scotland but financially we are a barracuda swimming in shark infested waters in Europe.
We have to punch above our weight this is how it has been since the day they changed the setup and allowed 4-5 teams in from the big money Leagues?
These cunts can afford to have £150m worth of talent on the bench and no even blink.
Unfortunately due to our circumstances we are hVing to bring in players with the ability to operate in different departments when injuries or suspensions kick in.
It’s not ideal not by a long way but unfortunately it is what it is bud.
Let’s hope whoever steps up to the plate delivers a decent performance.
I am fairly optimistic that if we turn up and put a great 90 minutes in at a level we know we can and have then we should get by this mob and into the money pit of the Champions League.

You’re right in what you’re saying CS but the financial argument can only be an excuse for a lower quality of personnel, it doesn’t excuse not having the players at all, we’re a football club ffs. Players who can “do a job” in unfamiliar positions will get you by in the SPL but it’s an invitation to a total humping in the champions league.

We often say that we should be aiming to qualify from the groups, if that is our aim then our squad should reflect it, at the moment it just doesn’t, it might not even get us in the groups.

Reply to  Hamoflage

I agree though l suspect that’s just rhetoric to keep the fans happy.
Thing is to build a squad /team that can compete in the last 16 you need to be bringing in genuine proven quality.
Not just 1 or 2 marquee signings like Roberts (ie in the next price bracket) but 1 or 2 a season?
That then creates a massive wage structure as these types won’t come for £26k a year or whatever our top men are on.
Face it pal we are like the likes of Ajax etc being left behind by the big money Leagues FFP is a joke when a club can pay Neymar £500k a week wages and just short of £200m in transfer fees?
We won’t spend that in 10 years squad building let alone on one player?
The Club has decided it’s too risky to even try keep up so instead have gone for a Manager who like MON could get more out of his team and punch above their weight that way.
I think getting to the CL is our main goal not getting to the last 16.
If it was then like you say we would be bringing in the likes of Roberts fairly regularly each window and spending way more than we currently do?
If we can find a way out of the shitehole we are in then l could see an entirely different approach but until then it’s the odd quality player backed up by decent players who can on their day raise their game.
Wish l could be more positive bud but just how l see it at the moment.

Reply to  Charlie Saiz

Our Marquee signings incidentally would be bench warmers at the Clubs who normally reside in the last 16.
That’s the financial gulf we have to bridge when we ask a Nitcham or a Roberts to come in and outshine the latest £50m signing from City or whoever?
We are now in the business of developing potential at Celtic long gone are the days where we acquired the finished article at premium rates.
If we ever did that is.
Our last major purchase was Scott Brown from Hibs at under £5m.
Previous to that you have to go back to the likes of Lenny and Sutton under O’Neill.
That was a team that was put together for major money in Celtic terms the most expensive side in our history?
The fact that it took a decade to pay it off tells you how costly it was in real terms.
Now consider the amount of debt the major players have blown since then?
UEFA have had a large hand to play in all this they. Have created a situation where the rich Leagues are rewarded with a guarantee of multiple places inpatient the top table whilst the like of us the Dutch,Belgiansthe Scandinavians etc have to scrap about for a month playing multiple qualifiers out of Season just to get there.
We (that is the likes of Ajax etc) are caught in a catch 22 regarding investment.
We have become feeder Clubs to the money Leagues whereas traditionally we could build and keep a squad together for an extended period and actually build from a stable base and risk a bit of Investment now we are at the mercy of the market forces.
We can’t compete with mid table Championship wages in England how the fuck are we supposed to build and keep our squad intact when the best players get cherry picked every 2 years?
Celtic can’t afford to knock back £12m bids for guys like Forster VVD or Wanyama because once that £50k a week is waved under their nose it’s game over most of the time.
So as a Club Celtic was forced to rethink the approach and unfortunately has had to go down the buying with an eye on reselling the player?
You could argue that bringing in a Lubo or a Sutton makes more sense than a Ntcham or Dembele on a footballing front in Europe but financially it’s a no brainier with the way it is now we no longer acquire players who don’t have a sell on potential.
There’s too much dough to be made now.
We and the other Clubs have been boxed into a corner now and as a result this has given the rich Clubs the upper hand big time.
Watching Liverpool last night l couldn’t help but think this is so wrong that a side who finished 4th last season are getting the same chance to qualify for the CL as Celtic who went an entire season unbeaten in their Domestic League?
The situation is so bad that 4 English men sat there after the game and felt compelled to bring it up on a show that is there to promote this farce of a Competition?
It’s wrong on so many levels but it is what it is and unfortunately Celtic Fc along with the other Clubs mentioned have no option but to get on with it and deal with it best they can.
Our only way of competing with these cunts is to hope someone like Dermot says fuck it and starts chucking his own cash at the problem.
I don’t think we are too far off bridging the problem at Celtic.
We now effectively have 2 squads at our disposal?
A quality first team (when they are all fit) that can stand toe to toe with these sides and a young squad who can cut it on the domestic front as shown v Hearts and Sunderland the other week?
If we can improve the later side of that set up then we will be in a great place to do something in Europe IMO.

Good points Hamoflage. I hate the “most important games of the season” tag as it seems to convey we are just happy to get there. Surely some of last years money could be spent on good quality back up for first team players ? Or play one or two from the Dev. squad and if we are beaten then use games in the season to ready these players for this stage next season. I can cope with it if we see a progression. Danny Ings has had a season long injury and doesn’t seem to fit at Liverpool so is a gamble. I can’t shake the image of the biscuit tin !

Oh Paddy dear I often hear, you speak of Cellic Park,
Her lofty stands, her pitch so green, the players vital spark,
they say it is a lovely place wherein our hero’s dwell,
oh why did you abandon it the reason to me tell,
I loved the place so much, it cast me in its spell,
Till my parent club they brought me back, they wanted me to sell,
oh well do I remember that bleak December day,
the taxi and the driver came to drive me all the way,
My rent and taxes were to pay, I could not them redeem,
and that’s the cruel reason why I left auld scabby een. 😉

Armstrong was Mr nobody till Brendan Rodgers came to the Tic. where were all the other teams knocking on Dundee Utds door, nowhere.
He was a POTENTIAL player, nothing more, under Deila he looked like a lost sheep. Brendan recognised his potential and gave him the chance.
What does Armstrong do in return? he gets a Scottish cap and gives Rodgers fuck all in return, so for me he can GTF someone else will come in and take his place, sometimes you have to show some loyalteeee
so he can fuck off. He will soon return to Mr. Nobody and will spend the rest of his career regretting his disloyalteee.

He was a decent player at the Arabs the question was like Mackay-Steven with him could they handle the step up at Celtic?
It took time with Armstrong though he did do ok v Inter if my memory serves me right on arrival under Deila.
Not so with Mackay-Steven he failed to cement his place and has rightly been moved on.
You are bang on though he’s not that special certainly not irreplaceable?

With the debate above on the Champions League and signings in the current transfer window so far etc it got me to wondering where everyone is at with your own hopes and expectations this Season?
Last Season was a terrific Season l thought as we finally made it into the Champions League and on the most part put up a good showing whilst dominating on the Domestic front.
This year my own hopes are…
A League and Cup double
Champions League qualification in a good Group then onto the Europa for an extended run in that whilst giving the second string bhoys more game time in the Cups.
I feel we could do some damage in the Europa with one or two more signings in this window?
