Celtic Diary Tuesday August 1 : Roberts, Rosenborg and Revolution

Patrick Roberts is away on tour at the moment with Manchester City, and despite using twenty one players during the weekend game with Tottenham, Roberts didn’t leave the bench.

Well, he’s got an important champions League play off later this month, and presumably Guardiola got a text off Rogers asking him to leave him out.

Rogers said publicly;

“Pat would be amazing for here,”

“I think everyone could see that.

“But it all goes down to, one, Manchester City and how they see his future there. He has gone away on tour with them and got some game time. They will make a decision after that.”

I think they’ve made that perfectly clear already.

As such, there seems to be a renewed interest in the player from Celtic, as it appears Manchester City don’t want him, but I suppose the player had to see that for himself.

Now he should stop arsing about and get back home. where he’s wanted.

Of course, the game tomorrow is too soon for Roberts to be the matchwinner, so that responsibility falls on someone else.

At the weekend , James Forrest, the much maligned winger who is odds on favourite to be the next fans scapegoat , got a boost from the manager, who thankfully ignores what our kestrel drinking pit bull owning support think.

 “James was outstanding.

“He has played up front as a young player and gave the team great fluency.

“I don’t know how Leigh is – I haven’t seen him since we left yesterday – but James proved he can come in if Leigh doesn’t make it.

“You are always having to try things.

“During the week we played Tom Rogic there and it wasn’t quite as fluent. For James it was more natural, for him to spin behind and come underneath.

“He was good at turning in tight spaces and can do that naturally as he has played there as a youngster and even occasionally in the first team for Celtic.

Another who will, or at least should be, important tomorrow night is Calum MacGregor, who was missed in the first leg.

Again, there was reassurance from the boss.

“Callum doesn’t need to prove anything to me.

“He has shown he is good at scoring, pressing. He is a fantastic young player with the quality to score and create goals.”

“Callum is always in my thinking. He has really grown within this squad.”

It’s gone quiet ahead of the game, as has been the norm this season so far, but Scott Brown couldn’t help himself.

….we want Champions League football,”

“This club deserves it and now we need to go and try and get it. The Europa League is not in our thinking, we want to get into the Champions League. This is the big one. This is a cash windfall for the club as well and this pushes us on to the next level yet again.

“If we can get into it two years in a row it’s great for the club and great for the players’ confidence as well.

“This is a totally different Celtic team from any that I have played in before. We have that belief that we can go anywhere and score goals, even when we are playing against some of the top teams in the world. We played against Manchester City away last season and pressed them up the park, made them make mistakes and we got a goal from that.

“It is totally different from the old Celtic where we used to sit back and get 12 per cent of the ball against Barcelona, although we won that game 2-1. It is a different manager with a different philosophy and he believes we have enough energy that we can go and press teams and create chances and we have good players as well.

“There’s a belief, even from the fans as well they believe we can go through whether we are playing at home or away. That’s brought in from the manager and his backroom staff. That’s been battered into us, to relax and take the ball under pressure when there are two or three men on you and keep possession when you are away from home.”

Things did seem to click a little better at Sunderland, and the key there may have been Calum MacGregor, the vital link in the midfield.

Tomorrow in Trondheim we should see a more Celtic approach, and with Leigh Griffiths leading the line, goals will come.

The trick is to make sure they are all ours.

Rosenborg will be without international defender Tore Reginiussen, but rules say they can bring in a replacement.

They’ve an international winger, Pal andre Helland who didn’t play in the first game who is ready to return to the team, so it looks like tomorrows game will be entirely different from last weeks.

If Celtic play like Celtic, we’ll go through.

Supporters have made the headlines over the last couple of days. first we had the attack on the newsagents in Hendon, and then this odd video of Celtic fans singing about Lee Rigby, the Army drummer murdered by a couple of extremists.

Tommy whatever his name is, the EDL agent provocatuer has offered £1,000 for the identification of each supporter in the video.

There have been no takers, and theres a nagging little uncertainty about this video that I can’t shake.

Is it just that the Scottish accents seem a little too pronounced ?

Anyway, I’m not trying to defend them, or even excuse them.

Its not the image I’d like to see portrayed of the club anywhere, and its not the usual behaviour of Celtic fans abroad.

And I’m willing to bet that Tommy’s money is safe. The online disgust at the “Celtic fans ” actions would have led to them being identified, and as far as I can see they haven’t been.

Whichever way you look at it though, our reputation is taking a hammering, and we need to watch ourselves. The media need little or no excuse to point the finger at us.

I’ve also noticed that a few supporters are pulling out of the home Cup ticket scheme.

Rangers Tax Case is talking about crowdfunding a judicial review, and beginning to plan it.

This can’t be good news, as it points towards the club doing nothing about the recent decision by the beaks to move on.

That is unacceptable.

But we’ll have a clearer picture on this by the end of the week, although I have to admit it doesn’t look good.

Ian Cathro has become the first managerial casualty of the new term, he’s left Hearts.

Which EBT recipient will land the job ?

This season, which promised so much in the summer, is beginning to fall apart.

All we can do is support the lads on the pitch, and push them towards that magical ten in a row.

Then we should retire undefeated.

Caption : “Earliest picture of SFA hanging football supporters outbtindry.” I feel tomorrow will be ok. I think Callum McGregor, like Joe Ledley a few years ago, helps the team play with more fluidity, maybe Jamesie will be more effective than Tom Rogic up front if the “scarf” isn’t fit .

Celtic fans bend over to get shafted by the board

We have not gone two games under BR and failed to score a goal, that puts pressure on Rosenburg, as they will have to attack. If Leigh Is unfit then McGregor starts with Forret up front. BR has the team at a high level of fitness and there should be no repeats of Maribor or Malmo

Agree Ralph regarding the morons that purport to support Celtuc, these clowns should be weeded out. They should join their moronic twins at Ibrokes

pathetic that our board are for moving on……maybe they too are involved in this cover up…..it all stinks….something is very wrong with the whole thing…….has to be us fans that bring it all down

If the Celtic Board fail to chase this up then I fear Lawwell and co have something to hide and it needs burying?
There can be no other reason other than financial gain… it couldn’t be something as morally corrupt as that surely?

Hopefully Lawwell and co are simply keeping the powder dry for a major assault on the SFA.

If not then my £30 sits here waiting ….

If that £30 isn’t needed and the Board see this through then this money can go direct to the Celtic Foundation.
Just like the 20 before it when l brought fan ownership up.

Charlie, Lawwell and Doncaster have a close working relationship and i firmly believe that they are in this together…..all they care about is generating money for Scottish football end of….
i have said it before but Lawwell plays us for being fools, he will say something in the media to keep us happy for a while but really he is deflecting the issue at all times, he thinks that once we start winning football games under Brendan that we will be happy with that and move on too…but he is so wrong….yes we are happy with our football but it is Lawwell, our board and the rest of scottish football governance we have big issues with, issues we will not rest on or EVER move on from until justice is done

Thing is, PL is taking home a tidy salary and bonuses every year so he’s clearly valued by the powerbrokers at our club.
If he is involved in a cover up then I think we have to assume it’s at the behest of our major shareholders and that’s not a good place to be.
At the end of the day he’s just an employee doing a job.

Reply to  Morto

I am in total agreement with you there Monti.
But the fact remains he was still drawing that massive bonus even in the seasons the Club failed financially.
That is wrong in my opinion in any line of work.

Ralph,
In my teens & twenties i sang songs that were offensive & probably unacceptable, i have been at games v original rangers and spat venom that i didn’t know was possible.
What my point is tho is that a lot of stuff can be put down to youthful energy & an attitude of not giving a fuck.
They guys will learn and their behaviour should improve.
I find it hard to criticise the elements in our support who are deemed ‘ trouble ‘ because i was exactly like them.
Just for the record & i say this as a semi grown up adult, i don’t want to hear songs about Lee Rigby!
Come on Bhoys, we are & can do much better than that!

The Board at Celtic, elected by shareholders, has made a few errors in my opinion. Appointing Lord Livingston was one as he failed to live up to the charitable ethos of the club and banning the GB section en masse was another. Appointing Ronnie Delia was their biggest error. In responding to the EBT case and expressing surprise at the LNS verdict and then asking for further review, the Board are slowly turning up the pressure. Slowly. I think they want to avoid the self destruct button avoid the nuclear option of Celtic v the rest. I believe that over time and we do have time. Those unfairly won titles can be stripped at any time. The case for improper registration and a review of the LNS verdict ( since it was reached without the facts ) will take time. Why we can do is to write to Lawell and make our feelings known and the importance of sporting integrity. We can vote at shareholder meetings. We can put forward resultions for the vote. While I empathize with the pitchfork and angry mob approach I think it’s a mistake. Starving celtic for Celtic makes no sense to me.

Pals are treated like animals and I’m extremely proud of our crowd voicing their dissent to the atrocities going on over their

I think there is a big difference between those that follow the Jewish faith as their religion and Zionists who take it to its biblical extremes. Just like Muslims and Christians that do the same thing. I would consider erring on the side of getting this accurate, rather than ranting generally and running the risk of being perceived as anti-Semitic.

Reply to  broxburnbhoy

anti Semitic ? Sure, maybe. I’d put your average Israeli on par with americans with their ridiculous patriotism. They think it’s a necessessity. Haven’t you heard of Catholics being attacked in Israel, they are into ethnic cleansing with a fervour that is utterly scary. My views may come across as extreme and yeah there is a minority of Israelis who are against the treatment of the pals. But don’t for a minute think that it’s just zionists who are happy with treating Palestinians as second class citizens. It happens en massed throughout all walks of life over there. International condemnation doesn’t mean a jot over there. They are a complete law unto themselves and in my opinion they should be sanctioned from playing international sports as the South Africans were pre Mandela days. It may as well be Alabama in the 60s with support from most of the western world
Ok Celtic is a sporting organisation and uefa rules say the use of banners in protest will result in punishment. If that’s the case why are Ajax and Tottenham allowed to display flags of the Star of David. The Palestinian flag is a bona fide flag just as much as the Star of David is . The offensive red hand of ulster is allowed isn’t this flag offensive? I think a one off display of Palestinian colours was acceptable and worth the fine. Though I don’t condone the recent banners displayed. The rules have to be uniform don’t you agree ?

Reply to  Iancelt67

No Broxburn complete misnomer the zionists are the pinnacle but there are ample others who have a righteousness to acquiesce to what’s going on. Conversely there are others who want a more humane response to the problems. They are a minority

Jews Muslims Christians all claim that if you join us we are the way to the promised land.
All have their extremists and all have the capability to kill in order to achieve their goals.
I believe in God but as Ghandi once said God has no reliigion.
I’m cool with that approach.
Too many humans taking these “Holy Books” way too literally.
They were written by men for men at the end of the day so from the outset they are inherently bias towards that particular Sect or Religion.
I do t think God gives a toss what religion you were when you committed an atrocity in his/her/it’s name.
You will be judged same as the rest of the human race.

Apologies, off to have a prawn sarnie.

Loved Leigh at the airport, class act.

The problem with this shithole Englandshire we live in, is they glorify the worst of humanity. The so called masters rained war all over this earth.
They use the divide and conquer mode, getting the great unwashed to wrap themselves in the butchers apron.
Over the year I have worked in schools Having witnessed the military charge into schools in The poorest areas and sign up youths as young as fifteen to join the army or navy with promises of world wide travel and a career.
This is a disgrace and one of the reasons I have sympathy for the cannon fodder
However it does not condone the actions of the knuckledraggers, or the EDL that hate anything Irish or Celtic as we are not thick enough to defer to the so called Royals. They also fear a united Ireland which is inevitable.
Many brave Irish and Scots Irish fought in the two world wars for Englandshire but they as the rest were conned by the Imperialists, what a waste of life.

“Any man who thinks the same aged 40 as he did aged 20 has wasted 20 years of his life”

Although, core values, moral & principles tend to stay much the “same”

For his sake ah DJ SMyth is about 13 yrs of age. So sad if he is in his late 20’s comin oot wi that nonsense.

Do you consider fighting Nazi Germany in WW2 being conned?

Britain having fought one moral war in the last 400 years of aggression and invasion and conquest hardly makes up for the rest. and its not as if they had a choice.

unlike all the other wars where they were, almost invariably, the aggressor.

Scotland per percentage of population provides more military personnel than England .
Has done for decades.

There are a multitude of reasons that folk join up for Red and yes those two are among them.
I think the bottom line is though us Celts have a gene that draws us towards taking up arms in times of conflict.
The clan mentality if you like.
Just add some alcohol to any Celt at the weekend and it doesn’t take much for the weekend warrior to emerge 😉
For me it was for the challenge.
As it was for many more.

Answer will appear later Red it’s headed off for a pint at the Ether Bar 😉

How did Nazi Germany come about, the corrupt bankers, industrialists let them rise through the twenties and thirties. Many of the establishment as well as the royals supported Herr Hitler.
A rabid dog was allowed to get his way which lead to another war or a continuation of the first one. The rich got richer and the poor paid with their blood.
Think about it, Mussolini, Franco, Hitler were supported by money, otherwise it would not have happened.
In all wars the poor pay the price.

Cartvale,
Hitler was brought up in poverty!

You answered a different question – thanks for the abridged history lesson – so you think because of the history anyone who fought against Nazi Germany was conned?

Both world wars could easily have been avoided that is the sadness of it all.
I agree with you Monti, and i have sang well belted oot mair like many songs that when i look back thinking what the fuck.
But it was tit for tat with the hun schools back then but doesnt make it right.
Lee Rigby did not deserve to die, and he certainly did not deserve to die the way he did. There is no defense of such a song.
It is a disgrace, i stand by Celtic fans and especially the GB as you all know on here. But i cannot and will not defend anyone singing that song it is not what we are about.
Give me a good rebel ballad any day, no problem but this nah no defense for it. Hope they get them and ban them from the stadiums across Britain.Thats if they were football fans. Which i doubt very much.

I also believe that had they sang that where the majority of the fans were, they would have been very sorry indeed.
Looks like a staged play to me.

How fit is Griffiths? What did we learn from last season? Why are we even talking about what to do if “no strikers!???? HH

John MacLean: “If you want to fight the Hun, first declare war on the King of England…”
The men who should be honoured are the ones like John MacLean and Eugene Debs who tried to stop the Great War in the first place. The ones at these ceremomies are the class of people in whose interest the war was fought— especially the ruling monarchs of Europe.

I pity the people who were caught singing the vile song about the young soldier who was brutally murdered. They probably were blind drunk and thought themselves big men swaggering about an English town making a show of themselves and dragging our beloved club’s name through the mud.Bet they don’t feel so big or clever now they have sobered up and have to face the consequences of their actions.I’d make them stand in front if the boy’s mother and try to justify in any way their actions. I live in England and it may come as a great surprise but the vast majority of them, like people everywhere, are decent people who are not bigoted or think themselves superior. The vast majority if our fans go to make friends with other decent people ,have a laugh and surprise surprise enjoy the football.Food banks, help the poor and needy – this is the spirit of Brother Walfrid.Of course we will always have a special link to what is going on in Ireland. But please don’t let our great club be hijacked by a bunch of loonies who are more interested in their own brand of politics than football or the great name and traditions of our club.
