Celtic Diary Friday July 21: Fined, Sold, Delisted

UEFA have decided to charge Celtic after the Green Brigades latest attempt to remember the clubs Irish heritage, which seems to want to concentrate solely on the particular period that most involved would rather forget.

Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round second leg match between Celtic FC and Linfield FC (4-0), played on 19 July in Scotland.

Charges against Celtic FC:

• Illicit banner – Art. 16 (2) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations
• Kit infringement – Art. 62 (3) of UEFA Kit Regulations
• Stairways blocked – Art. 38 of UEFA Safety & Security Regulations

This case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 28 July 2017.

The club responded;

Any support for a paramilitary or proscribed terrorist organisation has no place at Celtic Park. The Club has been consistent in condemning such conduct on the very few occasions in the past when it has occurred at Celtic Park. It is unfortunate that such a small minority of the crowd at Celtic Park last night behaved in such a way.

We know that the Celtic support will join us in condemning such behaviour. Events last night have resulted in charges from UEFA in relation to the paramilitary banners and unsafe behaviour in a section of the Celtic support. The Club has commenced an inquiry and will take appropriate action.

No wonder they are pissed off.

December 2011: Celtic are fined £12,700 by UEFA after fans make pro-IRA chants during a Europa League clash with Rennes in Glasgow.

March 2012: The Parkhead outfit are again punished with a £21,000 penalty after supporters set off fireworks and unveil an insulting banner aimed at UEFA during their Europa League fixture with Udinese at the Stadio Friuli in Italy.

September 2012: The use of fireworks at Celtic Park during a Champions League qualifier with Cliftonville costs the Scottish title winners another £4,200 as they are again found guilty of “improper supporter conduct”.

December 2013: A fourth fine of around £42,000 is issued to the club after the Green Brigade unveils “illicit” banners depicting IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands and Scottish historical figure William Wallace before Champions League group match with AC Milan.

September 2014: UEFA again cracks down on the Hoops, this time issuing a £15,900 fine after fans display a Palestinian flag during a Champions League qualifier against KR Reykjavik.

February 2015: Clashes between fans and Croatian police, as well as the use of fireworks during a Europa League group stage match against Dinamo Zagreb, sees Celtic receive a £7,300 bill from disciplinary bosses.

March 2015: Parkhead chiefs are given another £3,600 fine just a month later, this time after flares were set off by travelling supporters during a Europa League round of 32 clash with Inter Milan in the San Siro.

February 2016: The use of pyrotechnics again lands Celtic in trouble as they receive a £10,000 fine following a Europa League tie with Fenerbahce in Istanbul – although a portion of this is related to the “improper conduct” of the team.

Need I go on ?

Even if the club avoids stand closures , its a shocking waste of money.

But hey-up the RA !

How long is it going to take for it to sink in that it’s UEFA’s competition, and they make the rules ?

The club needs the money from participation, and you would think that the section of the support currently eating away at revenue would realise that.

Then again…

Moussa Dembele hasn;t let his halo slip..

but it seems the Green Brigade are happy to chuck the one they earned through some great work as far away from them as possible.

It’ll all end in tears.

Emilio Izaguirre, a long time Celt and a man who truly bought into the ethos of everything Celtic is about, without illicit banners, leaves the club this week.

this trip down memory lane comes from wikipedia..

Izaguirre agreed a four-year contract with Scottish Premier League side Celtic on 18 August 2010, subject to receiving a work permit.[7] He signed for a £650,000 fee[4][8] and was given the number 3 shirt.[3] He made his SPL debut in a 1–0 victory at Motherwell on 29 August,[9] giving a solid performance that drew plaudits from Celtic manager Neil Lennon[10]and Motherwell counterpart Craig Brown.[11][12] On 19 September, Izaguirre set up Anthony Stokes for the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.[13] On 30 October, he scored his first Celtic goal against St Johnstone, where he intercepted a back pass then flicked the ball over St Johnstone centre back Dave MacKay,[14][15] before slotting a goal under the goalkeeper. The game ended 3–0 to Celtic, with Izaguirre awarded man of the match for his performance.[16] In Celtic’s 3–0 victory over Rangers on 20 February 2011, he set up Gary Hooper‘s second goal.[17]

In the 2011 League Cup Final defeat to Old Firm rivals Rangers, Izaguirre was sent off in extra time for a foul on Vladimír Weiss.[18][19] On 6 April 2011, he had another man of the match performance against Hibernian in a 3–1 victory,[20] setting up Stokes for the first goal of the game.[21] In the 2010–11 SPL season, Izaguirre achieved a clean sweep of available senior player awards as chosen by players, organisations and the Celtic supporters. Izaguirre won both the SPFA Players’ Player of the Year[22] and Scottish Premier League Player of the Year[23] awards for 2010–11. The judging panel for the latter award described Izaguirre as a “class act”,[23] while Celtic assistant manager Johan Mjallbycommented that Izaguirre could become one of the best players in his position in world football.[22] On 8 May, at Celtic’s award ceremony, Izaguirre picked up the Players’ Player of the Year Award.[24] Finally, he was voted Scottish Football Writers player of the year.[25]

Izaguirre suffered a broken ankle in the second match of Celtic’s season on 7 August against Aberdeen,[26] requiring surgery which ruled out for between four and six months.[27] On 27 August, he signed a new contract with Celtic, due to run until 2015.[28] Izaguirre returned to training, after recovering from his ankle injury, in December.[29] He made his long-awaited return as a substitute on 2 January 2012 in Celtic’s 3–0 win over Dunfermline Athletic at East End Park.[30]

Izaguirre played 32 league games as he won a second consecutive Scottish league title, and also featured in the 2013 Cup final, a 3–0 win over Hibernian on 26 May.[31]

On 30 May 2014, Izaguirre signed a new contract with Celtic, keeping him at the club until 2017.[32] In the 2015–16 season, Izaguirre was displaced as first-choice left back by 18-year-old Kieran Tierney.[33]

Players come and go, but few will be remembered with as much affection as the fiery little Honduran.

We wish him, and we wish his family well as they embark on the next stage of his career.

It’s a shame it all happened so quickly and we never got a chance to say thank you and goodbye.

One little item of news that hasn;t really been commented on is the decision of Peter Lawwell to delist himself from one board and accede to another.

Have a look at the powers the SFA Gaming board has-google it.

You’ll find it interesting.

Running a wee bit late today, so we’ll skip straight to the Etims

Knob Of The Week

There’s a few in competition again, but yet again theres a clear winner.. not so much for what he did this week, but for how he looks this morning.

Step forward Ryan Jack, who joined “rangers ” from Aberdeen because, well, let him tell you..

“Those are the types of nights I signed for Rangers for, the European nights under the lights are always special

He meant European football, which Aberdeen still have, courtesy of a fine 2-0 win in Bosnia last night, whilst his new club-hey , they’re everyones new club- are out of Europe before the end of July, which used to be their favourite month.

Ryan Jack, congratulations, you are this weeks Etims

Where are you brother Pedro,
they cling to your breast like a great earth mother,
clinging so tightly your breath to smother,
the truth alas is like no other,

They hate you witless, a veritable spew,
a hate turned on us and now on you,
can you silence the bigots in blue,
who once were many but now so few.

and while we sing the Foggy Dew,
they spread their mantra like germs of flu,
they raise their voices like a loud cuckoo,
trying to infect us just like you.

Ah yes the cuckold in the vipers nest,
putting your faith to the ultimate test,
while you try to block out “simply the best”,
all the while your favoured guest.

Let them rail, vent their spleen,
to our fenian bhoys voices unseen,
while we watch the bhoys in green,
playing fitba. the best we’ve seen.

May sound like a flippant remark. But surely the green brigade being in the proximity of the flag bearing should be made to do their own policing and get the provocative act banners down . It’s in their own interest as they will eventually get fucked off altogether which would be a shame. And all that up the ra should be confined to the bars after the game

RALI took my Dad and my Uncle Jim to the Rennes match.

The family seats at the time were right beside the GB.

Both were in their 70s,both brought up wi The Rebs, both founder members of Ardrossan Garryowen CSC.

A club where you weren’t allowed on the bus if you didn’t know the songs, and what they were about.

But by 2011,we had all realised time and a place, and could be harsh in their judgement on that.

Believe me,there was no illicit singing that night. It was a trumped-up charge, brought by Eddie Smith. And imo prompted by a desire from the board to teach the GB a lesson.

A 1st year law student could have got us off,and even the judgement itself was begging for an appeal.

No,Celtic Plc wanted an example made.

Well,that worked out,eh?

Once you’ve got a record,you’re a recidivist.

Have the board EVER defended a charge,or appealed against any sanctions?

Erm,naw.

The GB are far from blameless-that’s why we moved!-but the board fucked up. It’s THEIR whirlwind.

The Orignal ‘Sniper At Work’ road sign should be a permanent fixture at Parkhead.

We could get 20 children to hold it in the center circle at every home match much in the same way it happen on Champions League night with their banner.

Their could be audio added to it too, i’m sure there is an audio WAV file to be found on the internet of intermittent bursts of a Barrett Light 50 discharging it’s deadly payload.

It would give the opposition something to think about, referee’s too.

The Green Brigade rescued Celtic Park from becoming the first silent football stadium in Britain . In the years before Green Brigade the only sound from the Celtic faithful was the moans & groans when one of our players made a mistake & the roars of abuse against some of our players .
We may have had over 40,000 fans but we didn’t have any supporters.
Surely the Celtic Board should have the brains & logic know how to support all of our club against Dallas & Crawford Wilson ( ex Linfield Board member ) & UEFA observer & anyone else who is plotting against our club .
Blocking the stairway by the Strathclyde Police should be the final straw . If our board accept that we are finished . Stand will be closed & Board will blame G B

Ok jimmy excuse my ignorance not aware that they are a body who actually take time and thought into producing something that’s going to almost definitely result in a fine for the club. I’d have put that down to a few of the more radical individuals. Do they have meetings, minutes and organised committees ? If so, surely then there must be standards met. Pushing boundaries to the limit must have consequences . The last thing we need is polarisation of our own fans. Also, isn’t it permeating the wrong kind of message to younger fans ? Won’t there come a time when all this stuff should remain well in the past? Do Barcelona flaunt Catalonian flags or the basque teams use flags promoting secession from Spain and if they do are they duly punished? I personally think racism in the game is a lot worse than having a picture depicting a paramilitary man, but I don’t make the rules. Seems that Celtic who are under immense scrutiny given our recent displays of anti what we don’t like need to take a breather and stop upping the ante with it.
Fans in Poland holland and Ukraine are way worse when it comes to crowd behaviour than we are, but we will be seen to be tarred with the same brush by the actions of some individuals.

Ian they will push all the limits to the boundrays m8.They are an ultra group.
They do hold meetings etc fund raising gigs they have made Celtic a lot of money from their tifo displays.
They will always divide the support and unite us at the same time.
They are an ultra group, so they are very close to the edge with strong political views which are of course republican.
Its either all or nothing with them.
They put a lot of thought into their tifo displays which are in the majority very good.
They also endure the worst police scotland has to offer, with early morning raids on their homes, dragged from their beds.
They give a lot and the take a lot.
So whilst the prawn sandwich brigade tut tut on big european nights those guys are at Dingwall and Dundee on cold December nights.
For me a lot of charges against Celtic have been trumped up. But its not going to change your mind or mine its what you believe is right. I respect that. But i respect them every bit as much for supporting our club the way they do tifos and all.

Jimmy. I grew up singing ira songs at games, the songs would then move in to “jimmy Johnstone on the wing” and John griegs
a bastard etc. these songs backed up by tricolours were part of the game. There was a passion here and a lot going on in Northern Ireland. Every night on tv running battles . Bloody Sunday. It was then acceptable or tolerated. In fact though the clubs condemned it officially, without the hatred and noise the game would’ve just been another game. There was a time for it. Not now for goodness sake. Both clubs have profited from past sectarianism and I think had quietly encouraged it. Now it’s 2017 alls not well. But it’s better than it was, surely …. I like banter I don’t want to see banter end into a bore fest like you get a man city games for all their money. But if it means sanctions then it has to stop. These fines aren’t spectacular that’s why you’re only getting lame statements from the board. But they will incrementally become more substantial and warrant the possibility of closed ground games. What for a fucking banner. It has to evolve

Alright folks. We are in danger of shooting ourselves in the foot here. We are the envy of all supporters in Britain with our standing section and the atmosphere it generates, even Sevco envy it although they wont admit it. I love what the green brigade have done with the atmosphere at Celtic Park and is a massive draw for me when going to games, which isnt a lot due to work commitments. However, we are sinking to the knuckledraggers level with these political banners, its not going to achieve anything and as for the rebel songs, I must admit hypocryticaly here that I enjoyed them against they absolute cretins on Wednesday but if its going to affect us off the pitch then we need to stop, the GB have enough in their locker without the rebels. Peace and love folks and all that jazz HH

We as supporters , enjoy what the Green Brigade do, but please GB move away from the policewoman stuff.! Yes sevco get away with it every game, but we are Celtic, and have to come under a different set of rules, as we do not give funny hand shakes, or role our trouser legs up, or offer live sacrifices , so we are not included in the inner sanctum, therefore we are fair game for every press reporter on the planet! Even more so the daily ranger, and the wee rag the sun! Funny how they always see what we do, but nothing at all at ibrokes! Funny old game!

The lack of support of Green Brigade & brown nosed supporters on forums like this only encourages the anti Celtic Dallas & Wilson to keep on punishing the club . Wednesday ‘s banner was open to interpretation, although those who wanted to be provoked were provoked . Celtic club taking these banners lying down can hardly expect UEFA to bother itself adjudicating on Rangers cheating & tax evasion . Sure why would they Celtic & a group of “Tory like supporters ” will not complain

Some on here very quick to put the boot into our Green Brigade, fucking disappointing to see that, very depressing.
I for one will NEVER criticise the GB,they might not get everything right but they are our own,i will back them no matter what!
Every single season we see & hear the scum over the river perform sectarian, racist and illegal
songs, they express nothing but anti Irish, anti Catholic hatred no matter where they play, not a fucking word said, only politicians coming out and describing this lot as ” part of the fabric of Scottish society ” – Alex Salmond.
” A wonderful atmosphere ” was how the then justice Secretary Kenny Mackaskill, described the Huns singing their usual shite at Hampden 2011?

This isn’t whataboutery or anything like it, these are facts, every fucking year the orange hatefest get’s to trawl Scotlands streets, celebrating ancient killings of Catholics, it’s a fucking joke.
Neil Lennon couldn’t do his fucking job because of this ” fabrics ” hatred and intolerance of his Irish Catholic nationality & faith, assaulted in the street, 24 hour protection for his family, fucking scandalous, assaulted at Tynecastle in front of thousands at the game and tens of thousands watching, why? Because he is an Irish Catholic representing Celtic, that’s fucking why.
They fucking hate you, they fucking hate me, they fucking hate us!

CELTIC FC is to close the ‘Green Brigade’ section of the stadium for the next two matches after serious incidents of unsafe behaviour at the last two competitive matches at Celtic Park.
The Club is writing to the 900 season-ticket holders affected to explain the Club’s position and next steps.
The decision, which has been taken amid serious safety concerns and after discussion with the police, follows events at the matches against Hearts in May and Linfield on Wednesday night.
The safe standing area of the stadium had been working very well until the final game of last season against Hearts, when large numbers of flares were smuggled into and set off under banners within the Green Brigade section. It was an incredibly irresponsible and co-ordinated action which could have had tragic consequences.
The Club understands that consideration was given to halting this crucial game because of the thick smoke, which was blowing across the stadium and into other sections of the support and posed a serious safety risk to all those in the stadium. The fire alarm was activated, resulting in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responding to the stadium.
The Safety Advisory Group of Glasgow City Council, which licenses Celtic Park and comprises representatives from the Council, police, fire and rescue, the ambulance service and other statutory authorities, had an emergency meeting after that game and communicated their serious concerns to the Club, which presented a risk to the renewal of the safety certificate necessary for the operation of the stadium and the capacity of the safe standing area.
The Club has been working with the Safety Advisory Group towards a solution for this season, but the events at the match on Wednesday night, where there were further serious safety issues within the Green Brigade section, require the Club to take immediate action to comply with its responsibilities under the applicable legislation.
Safety of all supporters at Celtic Park is of paramount importance to the Club. The safe operation of the safe standing area at Celtic Park requires effective communication and engagement with the supporters in that area. Unfortunately, due to the events at the Hearts and Linfield matches, the Club is not satisfied that the Green Brigade section can be operated safely at this time.
The Club will continue to investigate the events at the matches in question and to address the issues that arose. The Club will seek to engage with the supporters in the Green Brigade section to re-establish the necessary communication and engagement to permit supporters to be readmitted to the section and for it to be operated safely, in consultation with the Safety Advisory Group. If that cannot be achieved, then the Club will require to examine other options.
Club Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “The behaviour of fans in the Green Brigade section of the ground at the matches against Hearts and Linfield was a serious safety risk, which has left us with no choice but to take decisive action to ensure safety within the stadium.
“There is no room for debate. The safety authorities and the football authorities make the rules. They also enforce the rules. If the rules are broken, Celtic will be punished again and again. There is no hiding place from these realities. Anyone who has Celtic’s interests at heart must surely recognise them and behave accordingly.
“Every club which visits here says the atmosphere is incredible and that is something that we have worked very hard to support and encourage. We cannot understand why supporters who are capable of contributing so much that is positive to the club can be so reckless in doing it damage. In addition to the serious safety concerns, we face further UEFA disciplinary action.
“This is not a decision we have taken lightly, but the behaviour of fans in this section is posing a direct risk to the safe operation of the stadium and is also seriously tarnishing the club’s hard-won reputation.
“Dialogue, engagement and communication with the Green Brigade have evidently failed at this time, given the behaviour experienced at these matches, and we are therefore left with no choice but to take action to ensure safety at the stadium.
“We hope that the action we are taking prompts recognition by those fans of the damage being done to the Club and that we can resume meaningful engagement with them which would ensure a safe environment within that part of Celtic Park.”
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said: “It’s really disappointing that we are talking about stadium safety and paramilitary banners rather than our progress into the next round of Europe.
“The fans have a responsibility to behave in the stadium and I would urge everyone involved to see the damage this is causing to the club. Hopefully this is a wake-up call.
“The players thrive on the cauldron that the fans create at Celtic Park but there are clearly boundaries that you can’t step over. Everyone knows that pyrotechnics, unacceptable banners and ignoring stewards who are enforcing basic stadium safety measures are simply not on. I really hope that the fans take this on board. It would be a real shame if they forced the club to take more permanent action to ensure safety and protect the Club’s standing in European football, which is what we should all be aiming to promote.”

Fred, Mr Campbell is a wee sticky loyalist turd who, despite repeated flushes, refuses to go away to sea with Grace (see what I did there) and clings on to all he holds dear. His opinion on this or any other matter doesn’t mean shit when he has never ever uttered a single damning word against his beloved sevco and their legions.

As for Theresa May, I think she has slightly bigger fish to fry than to care about what Celtic supporters are perceived to be up to.

From the diary: “How long is it going to take for it to sink in that it’s UEFA’s competition, and they make the rules?”

By the same rationale, Scottish football is the SFA’s competition and they make the rules. Should we abandon R12 or title stripping and sit at the back of the bus like the SFA want?

Rules are followed blindly by idiots and those rules should be challenged. Fergus McCann didn’t bend over for football authorities and we shouldn’t either.

Still looking for the email address…

Reply to  bgbhoy

I agree but when you couple the banners with the chosen songs ten l think it brings a whole new angle for cunts to have a dig at Bg?
They should run any banners by the Club before it gets to game time.
That way the Club takes responsibility for any shite that comes.
ATM it seems to be a case of fuck the Club from the GB.
That can’t be right or tolerated.
I fear there are an element within that section who will go out of their way now to cause issues?
I hope I’m wrong with that.

Celtic have spoken and so has Brendan
If they chose to ignore it then l say he’ll mend them
Why can’t they just bring the noise without unwanted attention
Keep the atmosphere bouncing without a even a mention
Of illicit banners ,singing or flares
Just huv a craic under UEFAS stern glares
You’re a force for good when you apply common sense
But when you don’t it’s all at Celtics expense
Sanctions will increase if you keep this crap up
So please screw the nut don’t fuck it all up
The Tifos you produced for 125 and 67
We’re so on the ball they will have smiled up in heaven
Big Jock, the lions McGrory Maley and Fallon
Will have beamed with pride at your ingenious talent
All we all want is the joy and the cheers
So please drop the shite before it all ends in tears

Who needs enemies when your own club are willing to stop you attending games you have already paid to see. Are the GB getting their money back? Looking forward to the library atmosphere at the next two games. We have an extra 20,000 supporters than we had two seasons ago. Where were these guys? My guess is playing golf until a Rangers were promoted and hey presto they want to attend again. The same guys that were desperate for a ticket for the SC semi against them yet we only pulled in 14,000 against Morton. And when these fellas get tired of it again they will disappear. Throughout this time the GB has been present as have the hardcore. We do not have 60,000, even at the height of the Lisbon Lions we were pulling in under 30,000 for most games with crowds of 40 for games against Hearts and Hibs and the usual full house for games against them. But banning your hardcore support is never a good thing to do. If you alienate them, and some may feel that it is not worth the bother, then you are only stoking up problems for the future. Do you think this will result in new Rangers taking action against their hardcore? Of course it will not. One thing about them is they always stand up for their supporters, even when they appear indefensible. Manchester, the SC final against Hibs did not result in the board at rangers criticising their supporters.

There is a waiting list for SB’s
We had 55k SB’s under MON and a 5 year waiting list too.(No GB at this time)
The way things are shaping up under Brendan we could be looking at similar figures.
That aside the Club should agree to reimburse those affected but also take into account the previous 3 fines generated by that section and subtract it from the total.
Only fair don’t you think?

But it appears to be one rule for them and another for us. Yes there was 53k season book holders under MoN and they disappeared pretty sharpish when we weren’t winning. They are only coming back now. They will disappear pretty sharpish again. It only takes a couple of CL failures and a bad season or two. Many who are in the GB are part of a hardcore who support Celtic regardless.

There are 900 in the standing section and all are banned? If I was in that situation I think a little visit to a decent lawyer with a view to appealing this decision would be in order(no pun etc).My defence being ‘I didn’t raise a banner, sing, use pyros etc’ .I’m sure the GB will be all over this at this moment.GB7
