UEFA have decided to charge Celtic after the Green Brigades latest attempt to remember the clubs Irish heritage, which seems to want to concentrate solely on the particular period that most involved would rather forget.
Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round second leg match between Celtic FC and Linfield FC (4-0), played on 19 July in Scotland.
Charges against Celtic FC:
• Illicit banner – Art. 16 (2) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations
• Kit infringement – Art. 62 (3) of UEFA Kit Regulations
• Stairways blocked – Art. 38 of UEFA Safety & Security Regulations
This case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 28 July 2017.
The club responded;
Any support for a paramilitary or proscribed terrorist organisation has no place at Celtic Park. The Club has been consistent in condemning such conduct on the very few occasions in the past when it has occurred at Celtic Park. It is unfortunate that such a small minority of the crowd at Celtic Park last night behaved in such a way.
We know that the Celtic support will join us in condemning such behaviour. Events last night have resulted in charges from UEFA in relation to the paramilitary banners and unsafe behaviour in a section of the Celtic support. The Club has commenced an inquiry and will take appropriate action.
No wonder they are pissed off.
December 2011: Celtic are fined £12,700 by UEFA after fans make pro-IRA chants during a Europa League clash with Rennes in Glasgow.
March 2012: The Parkhead outfit are again punished with a £21,000 penalty after supporters set off fireworks and unveil an insulting banner aimed at UEFA during their Europa League fixture with Udinese at the Stadio Friuli in Italy.
September 2012: The use of fireworks at Celtic Park during a Champions League qualifier with Cliftonville costs the Scottish title winners another £4,200 as they are again found guilty of “improper supporter conduct”.
December 2013: A fourth fine of around £42,000 is issued to the club after the Green Brigade unveils “illicit” banners depicting IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands and Scottish historical figure William Wallace before Champions League group match with AC Milan.
September 2014: UEFA again cracks down on the Hoops, this time issuing a £15,900 fine after fans display a Palestinian flag during a Champions League qualifier against KR Reykjavik.
February 2015: Clashes between fans and Croatian police, as well as the use of fireworks during a Europa League group stage match against Dinamo Zagreb, sees Celtic receive a £7,300 bill from disciplinary bosses.
March 2015: Parkhead chiefs are given another £3,600 fine just a month later, this time after flares were set off by travelling supporters during a Europa League round of 32 clash with Inter Milan in the San Siro.
February 2016: The use of pyrotechnics again lands Celtic in trouble as they receive a £10,000 fine following a Europa League tie with Fenerbahce in Istanbul – although a portion of this is related to the “improper conduct” of the team.
Need I go on ?
Even if the club avoids stand closures , its a shocking waste of money.
But hey-up the RA !
How long is it going to take for it to sink in that it’s UEFA’s competition, and they make the rules ?
The club needs the money from participation, and you would think that the section of the support currently eating away at revenue would realise that.
Then again…
Moussa Dembele hasn;t let his halo slip..
but it seems the Green Brigade are happy to chuck the one they earned through some great work as far away from them as possible.
It’ll all end in tears.
Emilio Izaguirre, a long time Celt and a man who truly bought into the ethos of everything Celtic is about, without illicit banners, leaves the club this week.
this trip down memory lane comes from wikipedia..
Izaguirre agreed a four-year contract with Scottish Premier League side Celtic on 18 August 2010, subject to receiving a work permit.[7] He signed for a £650,000 fee[4][8] and was given the number 3 shirt.[3] He made his SPL debut in a 1–0 victory at Motherwell on 29 August,[9] giving a solid performance that drew plaudits from Celtic manager Neil Lennon[10]and Motherwell counterpart Craig Brown.[11][12] On 19 September, Izaguirre set up Anthony Stokes for the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.[13] On 30 October, he scored his first Celtic goal against St Johnstone, where he intercepted a back pass then flicked the ball over St Johnstone centre back Dave MacKay,[14][15] before slotting a goal under the goalkeeper. The game ended 3–0 to Celtic, with Izaguirre awarded man of the match for his performance.[16] In Celtic’s 3–0 victory over Rangers on 20 February 2011, he set up Gary Hooper‘s second goal.[17]
In the 2011 League Cup Final defeat to Old Firm rivals Rangers, Izaguirre was sent off in extra time for a foul on Vladimír Weiss.[18][19] On 6 April 2011, he had another man of the match performance against Hibernian in a 3–1 victory,[20] setting up Stokes for the first goal of the game.[21] In the 2010–11 SPL season, Izaguirre achieved a clean sweep of available senior player awards as chosen by players, organisations and the Celtic supporters. Izaguirre won both the SPFA Players’ Player of the Year[22] and Scottish Premier League Player of the Year[23] awards for 2010–11. The judging panel for the latter award described Izaguirre as a “class act”,[23] while Celtic assistant manager Johan Mjallbycommented that Izaguirre could become one of the best players in his position in world football.[22] On 8 May, at Celtic’s award ceremony, Izaguirre picked up the Players’ Player of the Year Award.[24] Finally, he was voted Scottish Football Writers player of the year.[25]
Izaguirre suffered a broken ankle in the second match of Celtic’s season on 7 August against Aberdeen,[26] requiring surgery which ruled out for between four and six months.[27] On 27 August, he signed a new contract with Celtic, due to run until 2015.[28] Izaguirre returned to training, after recovering from his ankle injury, in December.[29] He made his long-awaited return as a substitute on 2 January 2012 in Celtic’s 3–0 win over Dunfermline Athletic at East End Park.[30]
Izaguirre played 32 league games as he won a second consecutive Scottish league title, and also featured in the 2013 Cup final, a 3–0 win over Hibernian on 26 May.[31]
On 30 May 2014, Izaguirre signed a new contract with Celtic, keeping him at the club until 2017.[32] In the 2015–16 season, Izaguirre was displaced as first-choice left back by 18-year-old Kieran Tierney.[33]
Players come and go, but few will be remembered with as much affection as the fiery little Honduran.
We wish him, and we wish his family well as they embark on the next stage of his career.
It’s a shame it all happened so quickly and we never got a chance to say thank you and goodbye.
One little item of news that hasn;t really been commented on is the decision of Peter Lawwell to delist himself from one board and accede to another.
Have a look at the powers the SFA Gaming board has-google it.
You’ll find it interesting.
Running a wee bit late today, so we’ll skip straight to the Etims
Knob Of The Week
There’s a few in competition again, but yet again theres a clear winner.. not so much for what he did this week, but for how he looks this morning.
Step forward Ryan Jack, who joined “rangers ” from Aberdeen because, well, let him tell you..
“Those are the types of nights I signed for Rangers for, the European nights under the lights are always special
He meant European football, which Aberdeen still have, courtesy of a fine 2-0 win in Bosnia last night, whilst his new club-hey , they’re everyones new club- are out of Europe before the end of July, which used to be their favourite month.
Ryan Jack, congratulations, you are this weeks Etims
