Celtic Diary Saturday July 15: Bonfires, Bottles and Bigots in Belfast

Well, that was a bundle of laughs.

Linfield 0, Celtic 2.

The game had been moved to Friday so that UEFA observers wouldn’t see the effigies of Celtic players and other club memorabilia being burned on big bonfires as part of the north’s Culture Week.

Where they wouldn;t see banners using words that haven’t been used since this lot operated their ethnic cleansing policy

Of course, there’s no connection..

Instead, we got to play the game at 1700 hours, although it seemed to have started earlier, at 1690.

I missed most of it due to dentists, work and traffic, but saw enough of it to make me sort of glad I’d missed it.

It was as we expected.

Players were showered with missiles, and the police had to form a barricade to keep the hordes at bay.

And predictably , it was all down to that young scamp Leigh Griffiths.

Griffiths was booked on the 65 minute mark when he showed his reluctance to take a corner kick while the Linfield fans were engaged in a spot of tidying up around their seats.

He found himself on the end of a rain of coins. Then a glass bottle came bouncing along towards him.

Then he showed it to the referee who promptly booked him, presumably in an attempt to get a top job with the SFA, as he’s aware there will be a few vacancies soon. He obviously hasn’t checked why there are going to be vacancies.

Five minutes before, the impish Griffiths appeared to taunt the Linfield fans by making an offensive gesture..

Not sure how thats offensive to Linfield, and even if they took it as a reference to their cousins across the water, I’m not sure which 5-1 he was referring to. There were a couple.

Five minutes later, and Griffiths was over there again..

Quite right, the time for drinking is after the game, on the way home..

Then he went and tied a scarf around the goals , as is his wont after a great result..

Which was seen by some to lead to this situation…

Familiar ? Remember Manchester ?

Image result for manchester riots 2008

Riot police, dogs, barricades.

Whatever could the connection be ?

Sadly, Celtic captain Scott Brown admitted the players were used to it.

“I didn’t get hit but I found a pound coin – so I came away making a profit!

“These things happen. We’ve been to Ibrox and Tynecastle and it’s like that all of the time. It’s part and parcel of football.”

It shouldn’t be.

And if you think about it, when was the last time you saw a bottle being lobbed onto the pitch ?

The Irish independent captured a couple of incidents on video..

Pitch invasion,

Linfield manager David Healy, already upset that any money the club makes from this tie is already being sealed up and sent to UEFA, predictably didn’t see a thing, and then praised his fans for being no different from anyone elses.

Which was later edited for public consumption..

“I don’t think it was always going to happen.

“I think a lot of people in the media were making a big deal out of it.

“Linfield as a club have made giant strides over the years to try to cut that shouting and abuse out but you get that in Old Firm games, you get that in Manchester derbies, you are always going to get a ferocious red hot atmosphere.

“Our fans back us, back the players and me through thick and thin and hopefully they continue to do that throughout the season.”

Lets see, his club moved the game to Friday to avoid the anti catholic marching festival, to prevent UEFA from associating the great big bonfires filled with Celtic related items, and he didn’t

think it was always going to happen.

No, I suppose he sits slack jawed in surprise every night as the sun disappears below the horizon as well, turning to his mate and exclaiming

Well, fuck me, It’s done it again.

There was a fan on the pitch at the end..

Linfield will face UEFA punishment, which could mean fines and being forced to play behind closed doors.

Know what would really hurt them ?

Make them play their next game in the 21st century.

Next Wednesday is the return, and judgung by the tiredness evident in the Linfield players towards the end of the game, five days won’t be enough for them to recover, and they were never going to win by three clear goals anyway.

Last word on the game-at least until UEFA ban Griffiths for drinking on the pitch-goes to the manager, who remained, as ever, diplomatic..

“I didn’t see what it was but if that is the case then there’s always a worry,”

“I didn’t see or haven’t heard anything as yet. I could only see what I saw from the dug-out. It was maybe a bottle of some sort but whether it is a coin, a bottle or whatever it shouldn’t happen.

“The players should have a safe environment on the field and you want the passion from the stands to stay in there.

“You sometimes get these scenes not only here but throughout the country and it’s obviously not something we want to see.

“The game was in good spirit in the main and ideally it’s not what you want to see. I thought it was strange to see him getting booked for it.

“The talk is more on the football and for us the score line is ok. It could have been better but it gives us an advantage for the second leg.”

“It was better than the first game last year,”

“We got the job done. It’s still early in pre-season so match sharpness and being clinical will come. On what was always going to be a difficult occasion the players dealt with it reasonably well.

“Roy Carroll was outstanding and made some brilliant saves. It could have been five or six on another day. We came here to do a job and to win 2-0 is nice. We now look forward to Lyon and the game next week.”

Oh yeah, Celtic play Lyon today.

I’ll check the fixture list to see who we’ve got Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

The predictascore competition saw me eliminated at the first hurdle, though after being two up early on there was a possibility of seven, for a while at least.

Through to the final round are..

Don’t let Auldheed, Brogan, Hogan and Lee Travant doon Celtic, those RES 12 bhoys, the work that those wonderful bhoys put in, that complicated narrative, that is so difficult to take in by a tummshieheed like me. Clearly and simply the fraud, lies and corruption, from the “Rangers” and their colluding cousins in the SFA and the SPFL, the results are obvious and the reality is that, Regan, Doncaster and some of the present and past “Rangers” board members MUST be brought to account, don’t let them down Celtic. !!

Just to clarify the issue about DUP politician Jim Well as weered will confirm he is a fanatical Celtic supporter which is why he went to the.Celtic gate, also a fluent speaker of the Irish lab gauge indeed Sinn Fein have major hopes he will support the Irish language legislation if and when the Assembly resumes.
Leigh Griffiths should be censured for trying g to buy Buckie during a game, he never even paid the Linfueld fan he done the deal with a few minutes before though £5.10 p seems a bit steep.

Maybe the rangers tax scam is just the tip of the iceberg of what the sfa have been up to over the years, the spfl are terrified for the truth to come out too….what part of in all of this have they been involved ??
you also have to ask why so many clubs dont want to do anything? are they involved too ??
has our game been rigged from day 1 ??
if our game is to survive then the truth must be told, investigations must be had, the sfa and spfl should be brought down and new organisations set up in their place, justice must prevail or our game is dead

The sfa have been anti Celtic since our foundation.
Nothing new there. What is new,is that we no longer sit at the back of the bus. Sir Robert told them where to go when they wanted the tri colour removed. Fergus told them where to go with the Cadete transfer. Now Peter can finish them off,and give us proper governance. It is our time now.
It is time for our board to take them out. Don’t wait on others,we have the evidence, we have the support, all we need is leadership. Peter should call them out, warn them that unless action is taken, we will boycott all away games, all Scottish and league cup ties, and ask our fans not to attend Scotland games.
It is time for action. No more fuckin about.

Steven Caulker would be in the best possible place he could be under Brendan’s wing, with Chris Davies, John Kennedy and especially Kolo Toure in the background providing full support, this could provide him with a safe environment to rediscover his life and talent.
He is a great player who on his day is as good, brave and very talented as anyone. We are not a rehabilitation centre but none the less, this could be a terrific joint endeavour.

Or Glasgow could be the worst possible place for Caulker at the beginning of his recovery. The boy deserves a chance however, there is as much chance of him going off the rails and ending up costing the club 25 grand a week for two seasons while playing 15 games. We don’t need him either. We have Simunovic, Big Erik, Jamie McCart and Lustig can play there as well. Not worth the considerable risk. We still need to spend every penny wisely.

I think Brendan is just offering guidance, trying to help a young man who needs a friendly ear to listen.
He has his demons, and needs to get all the help he can ,so fair play to Brendan, for offering that support. At this time I think that’s all it is. Somewhere where the lad can focus feel wanted, then he can get back into his football.

Caulker is a wonderful talent, you cannot coach talent, you can only improve it. Everybody deserves a second chance and he is no different.
Boyata and Sviatcenko are not the answer to our central defence and you could always pay per game initially, until you see how things go, there could be no better place for him than under the coaches that we have, including Toure, he would have wonderful support from each of them and being realistic we could not afford an English player of his talent unless there was another reason for him coming here to be rehabilitated and rekindle his talent.

They will do whatever they can to keep us down.
I keep going back to the game, in which they called the shame game. We were hauled upto Edinburgh,to take the bad look off them Hun fucks. They were a disgrace that night, and couldn’t take another defeat from Celtic.
Fat Sally couldn’t just accept a hand shake at the end with Neill Francis Lennon,he goaded him. His players were thugs on the night, but for some reason,we were called by the government to explain ourselves.
I was adamant then that Peter should have told Salmond where to fuckin go. Simply we should not have went.
Amazing that the biggest cheating scandal in possibly European football, has had no call from the government.

Celtic have to appeal the card given to Griffiths as it was patently and publicly non sensical. Linfield will now be under EUFA scrutiny and there is TV evidence. Perfect. Dispensing with them should be easy enough for a second string team at Celtic Park. The SPFL retiree has shown his cards on his way out and that is a window into the “Rangurs” men who run the game in Scotland. They are unwilling to sanction the club they love even when they have been caught red handed ( no pun intended ). Independent inquiry is a must with an English Judge at the helm.

Iantm
Reply to  Broxburnbhoy

Broxburnbhoy, I’m not so sure about that. The last English Judge to sit on a PretendyGers v Ashley case waxed lyrical about Captain Blood and said he wished John Greig had proposed him for Masonic Membership. As far as I’m concerned there are several issues that can be tackled by a Judicial review. The wrongly registered players is not one of them.

Every other club in that situation suffered the sanction of losing the game… Get those 3-0 results posted and the titles stripped… THEN they can review all the endemic cheating and cover ups by the Huns in office.

I won’t hold my breath while I wait. Budge has gone all quiet… Has she a few Ogilvie deals swept under her carpet?

Broxburnbhoy
Reply to  Iantm

Fair point about the judge last time out. I also agree the mechanism is to award 3-0 wins to all who played them during the EBT years. I think we do need to get to the bottom of what happened that the SFA and SPFL were somehow unaware of all this or aware of all this and kept quiet or even facilitated it. Needs some kind of outside oversight and legal review. I would have thought the Scottish Parliament would use there much vaunted devolved power to order such an inquiry – ops that right FIFA would ban Scotland for political interference. So please step forward EUFA or FIFA ???

iantm
Reply to  Broxburnbhoy

Yep but the longer it goes on the the more convoluted it has become. All the “won on the park, poor fans punished, Rangers have suffered enough” type of pish.

There are two separate issues, the Legal review will be either long drawn out or will be another cover up.

The first part of tackling this should be on the football side. DOS is admitted and has never been sanctioned, the SFA and SPL changed the dates to exclude it from the Lord Nimmo Laugh in so it’s a perfect starting point… Get the rules applied… There is no need for any review in the DOS case because the HUNS admitted guilt.

As Monti always says Stupid, stupid HUNS…

Ralph,

We are right to shake our heads about the referee, but he is not atypical of what we get in Europe. Over many decades I have watched the “individual” interpretation of rules by a range of referees from a variety of European countries. It is becoming a real dilemma deciding what is worst, the wrong glasses from Specsavers or nothing between the ears.

Thanks for this. I have Celtic TV and it’s supposed to be on live but all I am getting is the game advert. Just wondered if you were on CTV. fucking useless!

Celtic tv is pretty bad but so are the other stations like Man U tv especially pat Crerands talk in. I suppose they are set up to be parochial
