Celtic Diary Tuesday July 4: Hate Parades: A New Scottish Tourist Industry ?

The opponents for Celtic’s second round qualifier will be determined tonight when Linfield and La Fiorata clash in San Marino. The Northern Irish side hold a one goal lead over their hosts, and are favourites to book a trip to Glasgow.

There are signs of nerves in their dressing room, though.

“you can’t get carried away by what might happen. We have to win our first round tie before thinking about the second. La Fiorata will think they have a chance so we must be on our game”

That was aging goalkeeper Roy Carroll, who clearly isn;t thinking about the possibility of facing Celtic at all.

Linfield should overcome their opponents tonight, but it would be funny if they didn’t.

Meanwhile, Stuart Armstrong is still the focus of media specualtion over a move south, but there isn;t any new information to be had, so the Evening Times threw a curve ball to keep the bad news flowing with this sensational scoop..

Ex-head teacher of school linked to Celtic fined for season ticket fraud

The club really should vet anyone with “links ” to the club. This includes staff, aupporters and those who watch on the telly when there’s nothing else on.

A FORMER head teacher of a school affiliated with Celtic FC was fined after fraudulently obtaining more than £1,000 for season tickets.

Anthony Russell was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court for using public funds to buy two season tickets for Celtic games for the 2012/13 season and four season tickets for the 2013/14 season.

The values paid by Glasgow City Council were £264 and £775 respectively – coming to a total of £1,039.

But it was not until February 2015 that an internal audit in to the learning centre revealed the misuse of public funds to buy tickets for the stadium’s main stand.

It found that some of the tickets bought using the funds were under two of the 57-year-old’s sons names.

Russell, of Belmont Drive, Giffnock, was the principal teacher of the Glasgow Celtic Football Club Learning Centre at the time when the purchases were made.

As part of the programme pupils are given the opportunity to attend home matches accompanied by an adult or guardian.

A total of 26 match day tickets were given free of charge to the learning centre and 22 season tickets were bought by the council from Celtic at a subsidised rate.

The court heard that Russell had paid back the amount in full.

He also resigned from his job.

Russell admitted that between August 1 2012 and May 31 2014 at Celtic Football Club Learning Centre, Kerrydale Street, and City Chambers, George Square, he obtained £1,039 by fraud from his employer, Glasgow City Council, by pretending that the season tickets for Celtic games were for the school when in fact they were for his personal use.

Ah, well, you take the chance, you get caught, you pay the price.

The council have also taken a chance by allowing the Orange Order to continue their tradition of Irish bainting , with thousands of marchers singing their folk songs in the streets of glasgow last weekend.

However, the Famine Song, an anti Irish ditty set to the tune of an old Beach Boys number, which claims those from the emerald isle should now go home as the famine is over, was outlawed by the courts, and cannot be sung publicly.

Unless you happen to be on a council approved and police monitored march, that is.

but it wasn;t meant to offend anyone…

No, its the words.

Would the marchers, who sung this song outside a catholic church, have parked themselves outside a synagigue and reminded those inside that the holocaust was finished , and it was time to pack their bags ?

Or maybe marched through Brixton or Boardsley Green in Birmingham announcing the end of slavery and the departure of flights for the Carribean ?

Unlikely, as it would simply not be allowed.

But in Scotland its a tradition to be openly racist, and whilst the police were keeping an eye on things, for many it appears that their work is also their hobby.

What other explanantion can their be for them standing idly by whilst the law is repeatedly broken ?

Its time for decent citizens to demand an end to this shameless parade, otherwise all the doo lallies around the world will choose Scotland to parade their hatred.

Actually, scratch that last line. If someone at Visit Scotland reads it, they’ll suggest it at their next meeting.

Back at the ranch, and the side are getting ready for their next match.

Its a 5 o’clock kick off against Slavia Prague.

( You’ll notice that all “rangers”  games these days kick off at “PM ” and not “o’clock ” . The latter sounding a “bit feniany ” )

Back in April, a link between the two clubs was commemorated..

Visitors to Prague’s main Olšanské cemetery were treated to a somewhat strange sight last Saturday as Glasgow Celtic and Prague Slavia football fans congregated at one specific grave to the tune of a mournful bagpipe. They were paying homage to a Scotsman, Johnny Madden, a legend for both clubs who coached Slavia Prague for 25 years from just after the start of the 20th century to its third decade and took them to the top in Czech and European football.

Have a listen to this, from Radio Prague..

Radio Prague

Read about the man here..

john madden

Its great that the two clubs will honour his memory tonight, and maybe this will become a theme for later friendlies, and strengthen friendships between Celtic and other clubs. I’ve even thought of a name for this kind of game..

Friendly.

Scott Brown has been talking to the media about his gaffer. Which will probably have his gaffer cringing a bit..

“You never know as a player or a manager what is going to happen down the line,”

“Real Madrid could come in for the gaffer over the next six months, you never know.

“You could probably understand teams would want him, the way we’ve been playing. Especially with what we did last year in winning the treble. You’d expect that, but for now he is signed up, and lucky enough for us we’re going to get four more years with him, hopefully.”

On an unrelated note, a pint of beer in Prague is roughly £1.10.

“But he has signed up, he’s happy here and he’s enjoying it. He’s enjoying living in Bearsden and he’s enjoying his life. He’s the manager at a top-quality club.”

“As soon as people start talking about people leaving clubs in the [English] Premier League his name (Rodgers) gets mentioned,” “I don’t think two or three years ago we’d have been able to touch anybody like that.

“But due to his name, and what he’s done in the game, he’s got a chance of bringing top quality players to the club and that’s what he wants to do. He wants to maintain the level that we set last year but also push us on.

“It’s been a good year last season. We have an early start with the Champions League. It is always going to be hard going back in as you saw in the game the other day. But hopefully this season is going to be just as good.”

Then someone shouted “Haw, Broony, get them in you tight fisted bastard ” , and we were spared the rest of his thoughts.

The Europa league has a game or two tonight, with newcomers “rangers?” in Luxembourg defending a single goal lead over Progres.

They should see it through, they’ve been battling progress over there for decades, and seem to be winning.

Their manager, Pedro Caixinha seems to have picked up a nasty strain of the Rangersitis virus-medical men look away.  know an itis isn’t a virus, but they don’t- with his latest ramblings..

about the boot ban…

“It’s an internal issue. We don’t normally comment on what type of boots people wear.

“All clubs need to have their own culture. We have our culture, history and traditions and we just need to keep it and defend it.

“All the details count. If you want to have that vision and mission, they count even more.

“If that vision and mission reaches the standards we hope, you are looking to be present in Europe all the time.

“At all the clubs I’ve worked for we established called a code of conduct.

“So those are the rules, these are our philosophy and they are equal for everyone. Are we convinced about it? Yes, so those are our rules and we need to follow the rules.

“It’s a normal procedure on a group’s dynamic.”

He might want to get out about and investigate the traditions and culture at that club…

He could compare and contrast them to the culture and tradition he was brought up in.

The Supreme court will give its finally final verdict on the EBT scandal tomorrow. Although the judgement may already be with the lawyers of both sides, penalties for leakage are severe, but of anyone wants to hang around BDO’s lawyers offices and chaeck if there’s a lot of screaming and swearing going on, we may have advance indication of the news.

Something to think about if they are to be proven as cheats…

Yesterday we had..

Ralph,

re – your comments on the orange march , the point is , if such a thing were to be held in front of a Synagogue or in Brixton against those communities ; those communities simply would not stand for it.
They would organise protest marches , their community and religious leaders would be taking it to Parliament and kicking up an almighty fuss in the media .
Those marches will continue just as long as they’re allowed to get away with it , until they are seriously challenged by the community they offend.
Catholic MP’s , Church leaders , individual Catholics with a high profile should be making as much noise as possible , highlighting why these “festivals” are so offensive .

Btw Ralph excellent wee upload about John Madden very interesting.
A great amount of stuff has been rightly written about the Scotch Professors and the men who gave Brazil,Argentina,Spain and America the game we all love now but little has been spoken of guys like Madden?
We were pioneers in Football the English claim to have given the world Football but the fact remains it was the Scots who invented the game we know today.

Think Armstrong may be for the off. 10 million will be too hard to turn down. Hopefully, I am wrong but the delay in him signing doesn’t look good. He is at work everyday after all and if Brendan cannot convince him face to face to tell his agent to get it done then the offer does not meet his expectations. It is galling that we are Southampton’s feeder club. The fact that it is Southampton is what worries me. Wanyama, and Van Dijk have both moved to a different level going there, Armstrong might have his head turned by this.

I don’t think we are anyone’s feeder Club mate we develop players and move them on for profit.
Southampton know we produce good quality at decent prices it makes sense that they will keep coming back for more given the quality they have already received?
You can understand it if he goes the guy has a brain and knows football is a short career and having just strolled to a treble unbeaten probably wants to test himself elsewhere?
£10m would be a great deal especially if we have s sell on percentage on top like with Wanyama and Van Dijk.
We have Rogic McGregor and Henderson not to mention the new lad Benyu.

I would not like to see Armstrong go yet, I don’t think he is ready, another season or two under Brendan plus Champions League football otherwise the bench at Southampton awaits. You just don’t get the time in the Premiership.

Regarding the singing if the famine song ,yes it is illegal but members of police Scotland stand by as spectators of the march belt it out, disgraceful bias,if I sang boys of the old brigade I would be lifted before the chorus,I have e-mailed the Irish consulate in Edinburgh regarding that song being sang at matches me and other Irish citizens have attended, that the racist tones offended me deeply and guess what no replies, these marches should be banned, but what chance of that when Glasgow city council hand over the main square in Glasgow for a bigot fest, come on Scotland lets get out of the dark ages

As far as Armstrong goes…
If we get offered £10 million…then bite their hand off.
We are still trying to get to a financial level which will help us achieve success in Europe…and this would help.
We have a surplus of mid-fielders anyway…to what’s to lose.
Armstrong staying would be good…
£10 million would be a lot better.

Armstrong is going to be one hell of a player. I would never sell him if I could avoid it not for that pittance anyway. He is the closest thing we have to a two footed box to box midfielder. He will be worth 4x that in 2 years time.

Mike Bhoyle

Its all about opinions…
But its not really about Armstrong per.se.
I have realised that we are a selling club and canny be arsed getting caught up in the hype any more.
Dembele will go at the first opportunity..no danger…
and I’d have him miles before Armstrong.
All I’m saying is…
That seems to be the policy…so lets accept that and get on with it.

I’ll never forget working in an Irish bar in Aberdeen when the Orange lot were permitted to match down Union Street and part of Holburn Street. The pub ended up full of Aberdeen fans and some of us happily served them alcohol. The police parked across the roundabout outside and started taking video “evidence” of the Aberdeen Casuals. They were flocking livid that the Orange men had been permitted to March through their City. To them it was an affront to their multi-cultural, freedom of religion city that had prospered by welcoming anyone and everyone from all over the world to work in the oil industry and associated industries. The police then entered the two entrances and locked them in. When the Orange lot passed the Aberdeen fans went nuts banging on the windows screaming at the top of their lungs. I was partly hoping that one of the windows would pop out allowing those Orange (insert word of choice) to realize just how unwelcome they were. The police only booked one person that day, who for some reason ended up in a scuffle with two Grampian Police officers. You/we are not alone in our disgust of what they stand for it would just take a little bit of organization and a grumpy woman in a knee length skirt as our Anti Public Marches of Hate Association president to get taken seriously.

One of the things that I like about BR is that he has vision. He intends to build both a team and an organisation that can sustain that team.
PLayers will come and go…that is the nature of the level we are at.
The best chance of retaining key players in the team is if they buy into what Celtic is all about. This is more likely to happen with Scots players who have had more experience of the Celtic brand. Letting good, improving Scots players go makes it more difficult to build and retain a good team. Armstrong is in that category. Can you think of another Scottish player in his position who is at his level? Further, could we recruit him? I think not. Brown and Commons are two players who got the Celtic spirit. Neither of them wanted to leave, even when their time was up. We need to find players that are not only good but who will buy into Celtic.

When Armstrong’s career is over, he will probably practice as a lawyer. Having a successful career in Scottish football will help him build a practice or obtain a partnership in a law practice. For him, moving to England is risky. He may become a bit player which is hardly the ideal way to enter into his new career.

It makes sense for all if he stays. Let’s hope the holdup is not over something small difference in money offered or length of contract.

Fred,

I like Christie and I hope he makes it with us. I am encouraged by the fact that we loaned him, rather than sold him. But he is not at Armstrong’s level yet. He does have the ability to see a forward pass which is excellent at his age. He needs two things to go to the next level. One, he needs games to polish his skills, and two, he needs to be able to handle the physical side of the game by improving his strength. He is getting the first, but the second is down to him and his coaches.

I get the feeling that Armstrong wants to be challenged, he wants to constantly improve and he wants to do it at pace. Domestically Celtic can only offer so much of a challenge, it’s in Europe where he will get that challenge or within the Celtic squad itself. For him to happily stay I think we will need another midfielder to challenge him and have 1 foot in Europe. He will sign, don’t worry about that, provided we are guaranteed European football or we sign another midfielder to challenge him.

The boss gives his verdict, on tonight’s friendly.
BRENDAN Rodgers was highly-satisfied with his players after Celtic dominated Czech champions Slavia Prague in tonight’s pre-season friendly draw.
The Hoops bossed the match in the Eden Arena but were unable to capitalise on several excellent opportunities and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
And speaking after the game, the manager highlighted several positive aspects of the performance, alongside the fitness benefits for his charges as they close in on competitive action in next week’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
He said: “I thought Slavia Prague were a very good team. I have seen enough tonight to see why they were the champions of their league last season. It was a game that was relevant for us because it was against a good side and a potential opponent in the qualifiers. It’s a beautiful stadium and the pitch was very good.
“I was very pleased with my own team. It was another step-up for us. We played Rapid Vienna and it was a tough game for us and we then played the game tonight and, tactically, I was very pleased with the team.
“We are here to develop our football fitness, of course, but we have been working on our counter-pressing and I felt there were lots of moments in the game where we pressed it really well. We had one or two clear chances and I thought we could have won.
“I’m assessing the mentality of my team one year on from where we were this time last season, and I’m very pleased with the structure. I also have to remember that the players are just back literally two weeks, while some players have only been back 10 days or so, and considering all that, I’m very pleased.”
