Celtic Diary Thursday June 29: Lawwell, Linz and Linfield

Before we start, a big thank you to Peter Lawwell, who has read the open letter of a couple of weeks ago abd graciously agreed to meet me and discuss the points contained within.

The meeting will take place in early August, which is another bonus as it gives us both time to prepare.

After all, it would be a complete waste of time if I drove nearly three hundred miles to the ground and then found myself unable to think of anything to say.

There was no diary yesterday, one of my sons flew off to Hamburg to meet some friend of his, whilst one of the others and his lass came back over from Dublin to atone for his guilt in forgetting all about Fathers Day. This meant I dropped one off at Manchester airport around five am and picked up the other from Liverpool at eight.

This left little time for anything else and also explains why a lot of comments weren’t put onto the site until this morning. I blame those bastards at work who still expected me to put in a shift.

The season sort of started yesterday in the picturesque Austrian town of Linz. Most of the squad got some game time as Celtic got the vital away goal in a 1-o win over the hosts, James forrest opening the seasons account in the 84th minute.

The manager seemed happy enough with the days work..

“It was a really good exercise for us in terms of fitness. Our objective tonight was to improve and develop our football fitness. Obviously that was the first time for us this season. It was a nice exercise and evening for us.

“The players have been training very hard. Of course we will sharpen up over the course of pre-season but still some real good elements of the game tonight.

“I am particularly pleased looking at the team a year on in terms of the comfort of the game, and they clearly believe in how they want to work and play.”

Next up are Rapid Vienna on Saturday, though the lord alone knows why.

Rodgers did try to explain, but couldn’t..

“That is the nature of pre-season,”

“Each game will get more difficult. It has been a really good trip out here so far. The hotel is fantastic, training facilities are good and this was a nice little game in front of the locals. The players would have enjoyed that.”

And he got to spend quality time with his son, without traversing the highways and byways of north west england at a ridiculous hour in the morning.

This is largely down to a new initiative for the summer.

Summer Skills Schools are back – book now

CELTIC Soccer Academy’s Summer Skills Schools are back for 2017. Our week-long courses throughout the school holidays offer expert advice and coaching, helping the kids learn tricks, techniques and valuable teamwork skills in a safe and fun environment.

To give your child the chance to be coached like a pro-footballer this summer and make the most of their time off school, reserve their place on our Summer Skills Schools programme today.

The manager moved quickly to dispell accusations of nepotism within the club, after his son Anton got some game time in Austria…

‘Anton has come with us to train and get in good condition for when the English season starts. But we had a few injuries to Eboue and Kristoffer as well as one or two others.

‘Anton is a capable player, he’s not just here as my son. He’s here because he can cope and is technically very gifted.

And that bastard who called him Released Rodgers can fuck off.

Rodgers also dismissed speculation that his wife was about to be appointed chief Caribbean scout, and his cousin was in line to be given the task of travelling ahead of the team during the European campaign to make sure all the hotels are up to scratch.

Kundai Benyu.

Now theres a new one. ( no, it isn’t, you mentioned him months ago-Ed )

Celtic are in advanced talks to sign out-of-contract midfielder Kundai Benyu from Ipswich, according to Sky sources.

His deal at Ipswich expired this summer and no extension could be agreed.

Scottish champions Celtic have now stepped in but Ipswich will receive compensation.

The highly rated youngster was reportedly attracting interest from Premier League clubs but is set to head north of the border instead.

The 19-year-old was on loan at Aldershot last year, where he made 21 appearances and scored five goals.

This cross border raid isn’t quite the same as the Dembele one, as Benyu, though highly rated, hasn’t actually done a great deal to turn heads yet.

Highly rated, incidentally, is how diary writers describe someone when they can’t think of anything else to say.

The manager commented on Benyu, but then gave us a cryptic clue as to who the second major signing might be..

“He’s a young player there’s a possibility with.

“Other than that, if I get the next signing in I’ll be really happy.

“It will give us great power and strength as well as quality. Then we can push on and wait and see what becomes available.”

Power , strength and quality….I googled it to see if I could find out what he was on about..

Image result for [power strength and quality

Ah, well, he’s just back from his honeymoon, so maybe he was getting mixed up.

The first leg of the tie to determine Celtic’s opponents in this seasons UCL qualifiers took place last night, and Linfield will take a 1-0 lead to San Marino after a late goal in a dreadful game eased their nerves a little.

At the same time, getting on my nerves was this , from the Green Brigade..

Well spotted.

The board is concerned with protecting the brand, and when idiot kids go around setting off flares and costing the club money in fines, fines which are going to be deemed as not working which will allow UEFA to close stands and other more severe sanctions, then they are quite right to consider that its probably better not to run the risk of trouble at a potentially dangerous venue which will be full of people singing about their own take on irish politics of the last eight hundred years.

But thats not the most important thing here.

Not only will there the game take place during anti Catholic week in the north, there is the real danger that the Good Friday agreement , which has kept a relative  peace over there for twenty years or so, will be under pressure due to a collapse in the ongoing Stormont power sharing negotiations and the sudden rise of the Democratic unionists to a position of influence in the Westminster government for the first time in their worlds six thousand year history.

As with any decision of this importance, all the possible outcomes must be considered in the context of the event, and it appears that the club has done this.

It may be safe, it may be as the game passes off with little or no incident. That is what we all want, and it makes sense for the club to do what they think is necessary to achieve that end.

Elsewhere, and that old chestnut about new clubs , old clubs and the same set of directors popped up again when it was announced that the big tax case, the one where the guilty verdict is being appealed by the liqidators of the now defunct rangers, will finally come to a conclusion on July 5.

Grant Russell, who reports for STV and does a bit of part time work for the SFA when they want to put a doctored letter into the public domain, told us the SMSM version of what its all about..

Judges will deliver their verdict in the oldco Rangers “big tax case” court battle next week.

The Supreme Court will hand down its findings on Wednesday morning, after the liquidators of oldco Rangers sought to overturn a previous ruling.

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) won an appeal in November 2015 over the use of the now-outlawed employee benefit trusts (EBT) at the club during Sir David Murray’s stewardship.

The Court of Session agreed with HMRC that the scheme, which involved payments to former employees, players and staff, amounted to “a mere redirection of earnings which did not remove the liability of employees to income tax”.

The judges decided any income derived from employees’ services was earnings and subject to income tax.

Oldco liquidators BDO asked the court for permission to appeal to the Supreme Court, the highest in the UK, and this was granted.

The key issues to be decided by the Supreme Court are whether the Court of Session “erred in law” in its findings and whether the payments “derived from” work and were subject to PAYE and income tax.

The Supreme Court also said the judgment will settle whether the funds put into each EBT “subtrust” were solely for the disposal of individual employees and, therefore, liable for tax.

The decision relates to Murray Group companies, including the liquidated company now called RFC 2012 plc, and does not affect the current regime at Ibrox.

Thats odd. He’s left out what using this novel and refreshing form of remuneration actually meant, in practical terms.

Dave King and Paul Murray were on the board of the liquidated club.

Dave King and Paul Murray are on the board of the new club.

Shouldn’t the SFA be protecting the new club, and Scottish football,  from the damage done to the old club by forbidding these imaginative accountants any role within the game whatsoever ?

After all, there’s evidence the new club are suffereing from finacial woes , as we can see in this picture which shows stringent budget restrictions are in place, with one of the new players forced to wear a recycled training top which has had the letters replaced.

With a German newspaper covering corruption within FIFA , is it too much to ask that our own newspapers have a look at allegations within our own game ?

We sent someone to a Scottish sports media seminar, but it just confirmed what we already knew.

Image result for head in the sand

Incidentally, it was good to catch up with former “rangers ” manager Graeme Murty, who seems to be keeping himself in shape-as you will see above.

As for their fans, they are still in denial…

Tonight they face Progres Neidercorn in the first qualifier for the Europa League.

After being granted yet another licence to take part in European football that owes more to creative accounting, one can only wonder if their opponents have checked the Ibrox accounts more thoroughly than the SFA.

I am in N. Ireland at the moment, from late June until the end of September and the last Black march there is an air of tension you feel you could reach out and touch. The kerb stones are re painted and the bonfires built higher, in East Belfast the Orcs have taken over a public car park and stuck a massive bonfire in it, with the Pope or their current ” favourite” catholic at the top. Where else in a modern city would that happen, talk about living in the 17 th century!
If as we are told the police advised Celtic against accepting tickets the club had no where to go, one incident and they wash their hands of it saying they warned Celtic. It’s a shame but the club was between a rock and a hard place, with the the rock probably being flung, though not laser assisted, at the Celts

BJF,
The club made the correct decision in every sense, supporter safety has to be at the top of the list…every single time.
Thousands of Celtic supporters in Belfast at this particular time, makes no sense whatsoever.
There are one or two on here like Weered and The Cha, who are more upset at losing face rather than the safety of our supporters.
I find that extremely sad i’m afraid.

Spot on and the likelihood of something occurring is very high given our previous and the time of year in Belfast.
We could be looking at playing games behind closed doors or worse if we continue to fuck UEFA off.
It’s simply not worth it given how insignificant Linfield actually are in the big scheme of things at Celtic.
We have upwards of £20m riding on these next few games.

good to see the bhoys playing again yesterday even though it was only a pre season friendly but we looked really sharp and fit so hopefully when the qualifiers come round we should be ready…
so July 5th is judgement day….i am 90% confident that they will be found guilty as charged but there is still that bit of doubt that worries me, but if as expected the verdict is that they were a bunch of cheating bastards…….then its title stripping time….and i am in the camp of the titles should be ours, even though we wont celebrate them but why shouldnt we get them ? for every fan who spent their money for all those seasons deserve justice to be done…..those leagues seasons were played and just because 1 team cheated to win them doesnt mean that no one should win them because of them…..i will happily accept them all…..as for the cups that is not so easy as any team knocked out by the cheats could argue that they were denied a chance to win so i think the cups would have to be made null and void but as for the league titles..thats easy…just removed or change every game against the cheats to a 3-0 win and you can fairly calculate the league table places.
Then should come the punishment to the cheats and compensation to all clubs who lost out on the monies they should have won but sadly i cant see that happening especially with the sfa cheats still in control.

Monti

The SFA & SPFL must be hounded to death about Title stripping, no let up and no fucking giving up.
The other member clubs need to stand up and speak the fuck up as well.
As for those supporters who are apathetic to the title stripping issue or simply want to ‘ move on ‘ or even those who don’t have the ‘ appetite ‘ for the fight, well, look at the Justice for the 96 campaign, the fight in the families for justice and to see justice done, if you need inspiration, look to these families for motivation.
Change, Justice and a game free of corrupt fucks is possible if everyone pulls together, fucking wake up & find your passion for this!

Remember tho, if in the future there is a strong tribute act picking up titles & trophies, you don’t want to look in the mirror and regret not doing anything, you’d be assisting them.
I don’t want that day to come or ever feel like i/we did fuck all.

The argument against taking tickets is nonsensical.

If the situation is so terrible then it’s equally so for the team, so we should be pulling out of the game as it’s demonstrably unsafe for the players.

The only ones who want to ban Celtic fans are the PLC (nb not the police or anyone responsible for safety) and armchair fans who seem to have a pathological hatred for Celtic fans who do attend games.

Monti. I see the point of fans safety and the decision being about right without sounding like a two bob watch and bringing Ajax up again but in my fucked up head I think the argument that the board would do fuck all if we were playing Ajax holds water and chances are we will probably meet them again. And their will be running battles with no protection from the Dutch police like last time. There’s no going back now anyway as the refusal to allocate tickets has already been made and an about face would only make the atmosphere more incendiary. I just see a bit of hypocrisy here by singling out Belfast as the only hotspot on the planet that warrants these concerns

I don’t think the board give a shit about the fans they are only worried about the potential of sanctions if there was any trouble .
Another point, if there were any problems wouldn’t linfield cop the sanctions due to not providing adequate security. Unless Celtic fans were to emulate the Huns in Manchester and that’s highly unlikely. I’ll drop this now it’s old hat

It’s ok it’s only a severe mental illness I’m pretty thick skinned some people are blighted with horrible physical afflictions and most of my faculties are intact. 2-3 per cent of the population run with it including celebrities. Lancelt67, “I could just man up” pal that’s a ridiculous statement, as if having a mental illness is due to some ‘weakness’ its the ‘man up’ statements that often keep a lot of males from seeking help as its a social stigma to ask for help..particularly in Australian male societyt. No being trite, but the less we hear of this ‘man up’ shite the better particularly when males need support,no judgment.

Anyhoo, hope alls well in your part of Oz. Cheers forthe Celtic TV feedback.

And some of the comments on here have raised red flags. If anyone’s interested look up the checklist for npd or bpd or even psychopathy, all up it affects a big chunk of people 1 in 25. More than any other illness Was drunk when I disclosed this and fully regret it it’s fuck all to do with football. Football is my escape still play over 45s with other old codgers keeps the depression at bay. I’m not ashamed or stigmatised by it , I used to be. Even Lenny has admitted to having severe depression and if it wasn’t for football the guy would probably be close to being bedridden

Depression will at some point affect most of us in the modern world l think it is a byproduct of the way we live today personally.
Pressures now start from a very young age the SATS disaster in primaries across the country had a large hand in it with the current generation l think?
The internet, social media also has a large hand to play as folk are perhaps more exposed to being stigmatised or victimised on line as it is after all the Narcs playground.
I suffered depression in my mid 20’s after leaving the forces after a close call and a few bad experiences In that role.
It’s a subject that needs discussion but in this environment perhaps one that should be taken with great care given the destructive tendencies of the Narcs?

Ian if you highlight an issue then you really should expect folk to comment and/or elaborate on it after all it is a forum for debate?
Any subject matter can crop up from time to as it would in any conversation in a pub for example it’s no Eastenders where everything is scripted or directed.
We all have issues or problems and if someone decides to air them on here then that’s fine by me they obviously feel the need or urge to have it discussed.
You don’t have to join the debate after all you can simply choose to ignore it and move on.
That’s the joy of an open forum.
There is no longer a need to suffer in silence nowadays help is out there if you want it or need it.

You’re made a guinea pig for drug companies in an attempt to fuck with your faculties. On the Linfield match, Both clubs did not want the match switched. So the police state that for security reasons, they cannot provide enough police cover due to the majority of its officers marching(I mean providing security) and to police the high profile match.Understandable.
They have no problem with Friday the 14th, this is the crux of the issue. Since they have no security fears,on that date, then Celtic, should have taken up their ticket allocation for this match.
It should have been easily set up,by the club and our own security team.

Big Jock at Dunfermline, Part one. “Stein’s Stunners”.

You can always judge a person by the memories they leave, their legacy. Big Jock took the reins as manager of the “Pars” on the 14th march 1960. We always take his formative years in fitba. management for granted, but a lot of his thoughts and ideas that he conceived with “Kelly Kids”, he put into practice at Dunfermline, his trial run so as to speak. Being the single minded person that he was, allied to his obvious intelligence, he still listened and absorbed ideas from others, he was always open minded to learn and to try out others ideas and tactics. That is what gave him a unique insight into fitba.he was not and never was deaf to learning his trade. But we have to recognise that he was innovative and explored ways in which he could enhance his thoughts to the benefit of his players.
Jock Stein, was unique, one of a kind, an innovator!!

The titles are not going to be stripped because Celtic are not doing anything about it. If Celtic haven’t spoke up by now then they ain’t going to speak up now. They cannot be forced to pay back any money unless you believe them to be the same club. They are being liquidated, I thought we all agreed they were a new club. If so it would be unfair to ask the new club to pay back the debts of a dead entity. If they don’t get to [pick and chose when they are new rangers and when they are old rangers then neither do we. I happen to think they will get away with it. As for the Linfield saga, I cannot believe the actions of the Celtic board have not caused outrage amongst the support. Celtic have capitulated to Linfield’s demands to earn a lot of cash by agreeing to the Friday game and then immediately provide the papers with more ammunition to slaughter our support because it is now us that cannot be trusted while the orangemen escape scot free. yet people believe the decision to be correct by Celtic. You would almost believe that people are willing to accept any shite spewed out by the Celtic board as long as we win on the park. If the game is too dangerous to play on Wednesday then Celtic clearly believe it to be too dangerous to play on the Friday. If Celtic are playing on the Friday then the supporters should be allowed to attend. There is no logic in this. There was an opportunity to switch the first leg to Celtic Park, the only party that would have objected to this was Linfield, the polis would have supported this option. Celtic had a pre-arrangd friendly and could have insisted that this happen. If Linfield had dug their heels in then an alternative venue could have been sought. One in England for example. But Linfield want shed loads of TV money which will give them a huge advantage in the league for a few years and suggested the Friday, not a date Celtic needed to agree with but they did. Why? I simply don’y understand. They agreed with this date and then said but we don’t want any of our fans there. And this is accepted. They expect individuals to obey a diktat from the Tory boys on the board. I simply don’t get it. Is the game safe enough to go ahead or isn’t it? You would think the people running Celtic had little more than contempt for the cash cow that is the support. What these bastards don’t understand is that they are not the club. When they have moved on to another business, or another football club, we will still be here. When the love they have for Celtic ends due to a better offer, when the league title is not won, we will be here. When they cannot squeeze any moe bonuses out of the club, who will be here us. We are Celtic not them. They are highly paid employees, very highly paid and like the good Tory bastards that they are they are only concerned with one thing. Money. Supporters my arse. And it is time a lot of supporters realised this. To continue to believe that the guys running Celtic will stand up for the club, for the fans, for fairness in Scottish football is delusional. Write all the e-mails you like Lawwell has been on the board at the SFA for years, even the Huns laugh at him for doing nothing about the corruption at Rangers/new rangers. They play in Europe tonight with the full support of Peter. Should they be?

Part two, Jock Stein, begins at the “Pars”.

When he took up the reins, his opening press statement read, ” I was told that there was money to spend and that I would have complete control”. (insightful eh)?. So his interviewer, was also interviewed by Jock. The Pars were third from bottom of the old First Division and only 2 points from the bottom spot. He knew the state of the financies, he accepted what he was taking on and he certainly had a job to do.
Achieving success early though, took the pressure of him and gave him some breathing space, his first game was ironically against the Tic., the Pars came flying out the trap and scored within 10 seconds of the start, he was of course hyped up, suddenly good players became much better, the STEIN effect was instantaneous and Dunfermline beat the Tic. 3 goals to 2. What went through the minds o the Celtic directors then. The next 6 games were won and he saved the Pars from relegation. WOW!!
Willie Cunningham, one of Steins most consistant players and who managed the Pars after Stein commented “There was definitely a tinge of Celtic about him. “Steins acorn was planted in the soil, Farmer Stein!!!

Part three, “The Stein effect”.

Pardon me if I gloss over the 1960 Scottish Cup final, where at Hampden I was part of an incredible 113,328 crowd, my very first Celtic game. It was played out and not much was memorable about it a 0-0 draw. Although Jock had a deep love of the Tic. he still wanted to beat us, the Pars goalie Eddie Connachan made some fine saves, Celtic’s Paddy Crerand dominated midfield, but his passes up field to Willie Fernie and Yogi Hughes were wasted and there mazy runs were side tracked. The Pars seemed emboldened and as the game progressed grew in confidence and saw more of the ball as Celtic huffed and puffed and with Frank Haffey in goal nearly gave the game away at the end, it was only because of our full back Jim Kennedy who was alert and saved Haffey’s blushes. He Haffey of course was the goalie who let in 9 goals against England only weeks previously, of course he would be a nervous wreck. The fact that the Celtic management left him in goal for the replay, the following Wednesday, tells you all you want to know.

Part Four, The replay in front of a meagre 87,866 I’m no saying nothing about it except Celtic were pish and the Pars not much better ,but Steins man marking worked a treat, filled his players with confidence, saying that some of the Celtic players and management were nothing special and of course he was right. Ironically in the 67th minute the Pars Dave Thomson scored. It has to be said that after the goal Celtic rained balls goal wards and Eddie Connachan the Pars goalie played brilliantly, saving from all Celtics attempts. One save in particular from John Yogi Hughes was unbelievable. Dunfermline scored again 2 minutes from time when ham fisted Haffey fumbled again and Dickson scored to end the game 2-0 to the Pars in the 76th Scottish Cup in their 76th year. Big Jock in his white raincoat ran onto the park and hugged his players. The legend that is Jock Stein had started and his long journey into immortality. Steins Stunners was the headline. THE END.

Part Four, Glory to the Steins men!!!!

The replay in front of a meagre 87,866 I’m saying diddly squat, except that we were shite and the Pars not much better, but Jocks man marking worked a treat. He as per usual filled his players with confidence, telling them that some of the Celtic players were not very good, nothing special, he of course was right. Ironically the Pars scored first in the 67th minute, the scorer was Dave Thomson. It has to be said that Celtic after going behind, attacked very often and came close to scoring when Yogi Hughes was one on one with Eddie Connachan the Pars keeper, he made a fantastic save from Yogis feet. Connachan had a brilliant game, what is it about goalies that makes them lift there game when they play us?
Dunfermilne scored again two minutes from time, when once again Haffey fumbled a shot and the rebound fell to Dickson who scored. Jock the miracle worker had worked his majic again. Ironically Dunfermilne won the Scottish cup the 76th in there 76th year.
Big Jock in his white raincat ran on to the pitch and hugged his players.
The Legend that was STEIN had started his journey to immortality. Steins Stunners were the headlines.

Celtic should have insisted they play on the 11th or 12th to ensure the polis said no and UEFA would have switched the tie to Celtic Park. But Linfield didn’t want that because it will cost them over a million pounds. What I can’t work out its why Celtic were willing to accommodate Linfield with the Friday game to ensure their pay day but unwilling to accommodate their own fans with tickets. If the ties were switched the telly will not be interested as Celtic will be 4 or 5 in front. No money for Linfield. I would like someone at Celtic Park to tell the truth and state clearly why they are willing to accommodate the Orange supporters of Linfield, but not their own fans?

For the record I agreed with everything you said earlier regarding not lying down to the orinj scum and challenging them on every front. Don’t want to get in to an argument with anyone else on here regarding whether its right or wrong in Celtic banning ticket sales, but to my mind that’s lying down to the horrible orinj bastards and letting them dictate to us. It doesn’t sit right with me. In regards to the safety element; fans should have the choice to make the decision for themselves in determining their own safety. They definitely should not be totally removed from the discussion without any incorporation or even a right of reply. That isn’t a democracy. I am a bit biased though, as I can’t stand any of the current board incumbents and I hope to fuck Ralph tears Lawwell a new one. HH! TAR!

Seems to me no one dictated to anyone. A difficult situation arose because of centuries old sectarian hatred and potential for serious harm to Celtic supporters and of course potential serious harm to the club done by Celtic supporters. So to avoid any threat to life and limb and any threat of getting banned from the CL or playing behind closed doors, The Celtic Board made a sensible, in the best interest of the club decision. Nobody lay down and how nice it would be for Linfield supporters to goad certain Celtic supports to a battle in or around the ground and get us banned. Bigger picture is what the Board gets paid for and in this instance they got it right.
