Celtic Diary Friday June 23: Too Much Information

There were a few stories flying around yesterday, but nothing official.

This Linfield nonsense is taking up a lot of the clubs time.

It now appears the game will be played in 1690, on a Friday night , the 14th, with a big bonfire in each corner to provide illumination.

If only something would provide illumination to those who are involved in this farce.

Celtic supporters have travelled all around the world, and yet the short hop over the Irish Sea-can you get a long hop ?-is causing all sorts of kerfuffle.

Its all down to the marching season, which is when another collection of less than well illuminated fellows put on their bright orange sashes , bowler hats and smart suits before tramping up and down the streets because, well, because thats what they’ve always done.

Unfortunately, those who do that sort of thing will be doing it at the same time as Celtic visit , and those who enjoy a good old tramp don’t like Celtic. Or anyone else who believes that its quite feasible that dinosaurs existed, rock formations were caused by millions of years of pressure on tectonic plates, and that catholics should get equal rights in the workplace.

But we don’t need to worry about where to catch the train for the seventeenth century.

It appears that Celtic will announce today that the club will refuse its ticket allocation for the match, and the players will have to cope on their own.

Yeah, that’ll work.

We’re playing in the seventeenth century. At least four supporters clubs i know have already commissioned Stephen Hawking to produce that time machine he keeps harping on about.

Celtic fans are going to Belfast.

By refusing official tickets, the club is forcing them to use their own wits, and speaking as someone who found himself in the home fans section against Benfica over in Lisbon, its not that difficult.

And I don’t speak a word of Portuguese.

In Belfast, there will be a lot of locals who will get their hands on tickets, and its not going to end well.

And thats before the chaps going over from Stranraer end up on the same boat as the marchers returning from any festivities in Glasgow.

The club haven’t thought this one through.

Or rather, security man Ronnie Hawthorn hasn’t thought this one through.

You can rest assured when it all goes tits, we’ll be calling for his resignation.

Image result for no pressure

It’s easy to criticise, but what is the real solution.

Easy.

Take the allocation, put the fans on special buses, and get them in, get them out and pay for helicopter cover during the journey.

Anyone who steps out of line doesn’t go again. A novel idea, but if you treat people as adults, they tend to behave as adults.

Except me, of course. Which is why I’m not allowed out.

Its a big game for Linfield, should they overcome LaFiorata, and a chance for their manager to be what he wanted to be back in March (the month, not the hobby) 2011

Er, he might not use the word hero to describe the chunky chap these days, but hindsight is called hindsight for a reason.

Image result for oh okay gif

Other news expected to break today is the announcement of a friendly with Sunderland, July 29,  which of course is a town in north east England, and not one of those wee countries that have sprouted up in the UEFA long list.

Even so, you’ll probably need a translator to speak to the locals, who you will find difficult to understand due to a strong accent and a tendency to make up their own words.

For instance, they used to call a football manager a “DavidMoyes”, which of course has little resemblance to the actual meaning of the words, so you do need to be on your toes.

Those of you tearing your hair out at the lack of signings mght want to note the relaxed tone of this from the manager, now back off his honeymoon and leaning ahainst the trophy cabinet trying to catchis breath.

“Over the course of my time, both and off the field, we want to bring a real stability and a great stability to Celtic,”  “Obviously on the field is where it matters, that is where the club can grow from your success on the field, so we need to keep investing in the team both in the technical and tactical terms and in terms of investment to keep improving the playing squad.

“But that is something that has been made very clear and I have had great support since I have been here that when the right players become available and if they are available we will do everything we can to bring them in. Alongside that, I still think there is great growth in the players we already have. If I think of the development of a lot of the players this season, they are still young.

“The average age of the squad is 25 and that tells you that there is still a few years left of real good development within the squad itself. Now that we have a defined way of playing, a defined way of working, the confidence and quality of that can only increase.”

Stability ?

Surely not strength and stability, like that woman off the telly kept banging her gums about ?

The signings already made will be announced in due course, which explains how relaxed the man is about all of this.

On the opposite side of the city, the rush to buy the merchandise that has been clogging up Sports Direct warehouses has been phenomenal.

You have to hand it to Dave King, who has added marketing to an already impressive array of talents.

Except…

Phil MacGhiollabhan On Marketing

Read that piece, go on . I’ll wait…

So King wasn’t the man behind the deal after all !

And I’l tell you something else, from a source so full of the drink that its coming out of his ears….

King and Murray, the one with the dodgy eyes and the one with the dodgy hair, are on their way out of Ibrox…

King will be replaced by Alastair Johnston, and there will be a return for Derek Lambias to keep an eye on all things retail.

Ashley may well have played his cards, and it seems he had a better hand than King after all.

Well, lets be honest, King was never dealing from strength anyway, and you’ll note that the deal he has apparently brokered wasn’t notified to the Stock Exchange, where Sports Direct , as a listed company, are obliged to mention any deals which are significant.

Then again, at these sort of prices, its hardly going to warrant a police escort to the bank with the extra cash.

Plus a few quid for a players name and number on the back, or a chance for a fan to show how much he loves his club with a poignant message…

So at twenty quid minus VAT and other costs , the club would need to shift , oh dozens, to get them the sort of revenue that can render Celtics “unnatural advantage ” obselete.

Every time. They fall for it every time.

But then again, they don’t get all the information. The Rangers Mega Store website, for instance, had a new owner/operator /holding company yesterday..

Another announcement today -one that has us waiting with baited breath, comes from the Scottish League.

Its the fixture list!

Wonder who we’ll get, and if we’ll take up our away allocation.

All of this gives the media something to write about, something to keep the average football fan, guys like you and I , away from the real stories.

so its always worth having a look at grown up outlets to see what they are talking about…

Offshore Game. New Article.

Its not going away. There’s a few of us still fighting, and it has been noticed… in some surprising places…

And now, it’s Friday, so its time for

Knob of the Week

When this particular item forst saw the light of day, I kind of expected that some people would more or less monopolise the award.

And lo, it has become so.

Chris Jack, the “rangers ” blogger at the Evening Times, [resented a question and answer session with outgoing Ibrox chief Dave King.

Well, they haven’t said he’s outgoing yet, but if drunks are to be believed…

It wasn’t the toughest of sessions for the South Africa based liar, though he may have found it tricky to hear what was being asked, as Jack’s tongue was firmly placed between his cheeks, which also made it difficult for him to sit down.

Anyway, the article, which is ridiculously sycphantic and therefore difficult to take seriously, shows that that despite the fact the gullibillies are being fleeced again, they can’t even look to Jack for some kind of protection against or exposure of, the latest set of scoundrels to take their money.

It’s a shame really, and so therefore, another

Knob of the Week

award is winging its way over to the Evening Times, where we hear they are looking at bigger premises just to be able to find a place for all of them.

Image result for chris jack

I find it hard to understand how these people can sleep at night.

When all the corruption and collusion is finally laid out for the world to see, and the SFA is cleared out, then maybe the media will see what a collection of cowards they too have been employing, and put them on the free transfer list…

The world may indeed be about to change, and theres a warm round of applause for the guys who put so much into this…

(The Scotsman )

MSPs bid to scrap Offensive Behaviour at Football Act

A bid to scrap a controversial law aimed at tackling sectarian behaviour at football has been officially lodged at the Scottish Parliament. James Kelly has brought forward a Member’s Bill to repeal the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act.
The Labour MSP said he is “confident that next season will be the final football season with this poor piece of legislation in place”.

Almost there…keep going. It shows what can be achieved when you keep fighting.

Who knows, maybe a brave new world is just around the corner.

Yesterday, we asked about this, which of course is completely unrelated to the Knob of the Week award, as although the wording is the same, the concept is entirely different..

This is a disgrace if we don’t take tickets. What a way to treat the fans who travel from here every week. Why take tickets for ajax the season after all the trouble?? Clubs a joke. They can fuck off

Bgbhoy why in the name of god should the club tale tickets from Linfield, thereby putting money in their grubby little orange hands, exposing our fans to danger and the good name of the club to the risk of guilt by association. If there i9s a riot, violence or whatever you can be sure that the media will blame both sets of supporters.
I know you will feel that you have knowledge etc to look after yourself in safety but its not worth it mate,

Ralph,
I was watching the lying king at his ‘ presser ‘ banging on about all sorts of pish, halfway through this banality i started to count until he mentioned Celtic :)….i got to seven, which would come as a surprise to a few of my old school teachers.
I find my head starts hurting when the likes of King, Regan or Doncaster open their fucking mouths.
I actually feel nauseous when typing their names, they are a bad joke, a very bad joke.

Linfield? Is there a situation anywhere else throughout Europe, where a football match can’t be played, because there are thousands of bigots celebrating the killing of people?
It is fucking nonsense!
No matter when this game is played, Celtic should tell them to stick their orange tickets up their fucking arse, don’t give them a penny!

Celtic are quite correct in not accepting any tickets for that shit hole and any Celtic supporter determined to attend what amounts to a training match that could cost our club dearly, really need their heads examined. Why UEFA had a role to play in this and have failed miserably. If you cannot guarantee the safety of away supporters, then you should not be allowed to compete in the tournament.I also worry for the safety of our players in this tie.

Disappointed that Celtic even sat down to talks with Linfield. this should have been an issue between Linfield, UEFA and the local constabulary.Celtic by sitting with these people have put the club & the fans in the spotlight. Let ueFA make the decision, Celtic abide by it then take it from there.

Monti

Reply to  IRISHGUY

IRISHGUY,
I’m not understanding your point m8, are you saying Celtic should have NO say in the safety of our support?
Are you saying that if UEFA & the PSNI insisted this game go ahead on the 12th July, we should just sell as many tickets as possible and honour the fixture?
Celtic should be at the front of our supports safety, not Uefa or the PSNI!

If any of our support were seriously attacked ar worse, who do the family grieve to…Uefa?

Not what I meant Monti, Team & Support safety is Paramount, but if celtic did not agree to the terms arrived at they could then voice concerns.

Linfield & the PSNI are wholly responsible for the safety of visiting fan both inside & outside the ground. If they cannot guarantee that the game should be removed. the marching season does not end after the twelfth, the problem will still be there on the 14th. Linfield want this moved purely for financial reasons, seems they got their wish.

CQN are absolutely right, UEFA are at pains to try to stop any kind of trouble before the draw, this tie could/ should have been stopped before it was announced, that is where the blame lye’s.
Linfield will be drooling over the money that this draw will give them, it gets right up my crack at the thought of our money going to those 1690 pricks.
Last year a relevant tactic employed by every SPL club was to stick the boot into Celtic players, it distresses me to think that this surely is a tactic that they would use, we need to be ready for that.

The supporters have again been let down by the club. celtic should have informwed UEFA that they would not play this fixture if it was drawn. The game should have been moved to England or the Republic of Ireland. Some one will get killed and that is a price too high for this farce. When will the people in charge at Celtic actually stick up for the supporters. They appear to be too bust counting all the money put into the club by the supporters. Welll, they ain’t spending any of it. I believe it is still early but the signs are not good. The one player that the fans and, apparently the manager, wanted is clearly not coming as Celtic insulted Man City with a pathetic bid. If Celtic had offered City 8-9 million Paddy would be in the Hoops. He will not come now. That shipped has sailed because Celtic would not spend any of the mega millions made last season. Instead, for a sixth of the price they sign Aberdeen’s best player and now expect Rodgers to turn him into a CL player in 4 weeks. This despite the player never having been at a CL game never mind having played in one. He will take the field in Celtic’s most important game of the season with less CL experience than 90% of the crowd! exactly the situation Rodgers said he would not wanted to but would avoid. I am well into my 50s and with the exception of Certainly one, possibly two seasons, this is the usual story at Celtic. The players linked with the club have also been underwhelming. Thankfully, Januzaj is going to Spain. But I am already braced for a couple of cheap options coming in. What are they saving the money for? Is something behind the scenes not right and the club need to stockpile tens of millions. We have made about 40 million from Southampton in the past 3 or 4 seasons as well as last years CL money and other transfers yet the most we have spent is 3 mill on Sinclair. Do the boys behind the seasons want to ensure the survival of their second team, New Rangers, and save them from administration to ensure thew survival of the Old Firm. After all, this will shift a few tickets as the supporters also love the new rangers. Are they abandoning progress in Europe for increased domestic competition? Just to keep the supporters interested. Well, they allowed New Rangers to come into being and have stood in the way of the investigation into SFA corruption, refusing to back the club’s supporters. Do we really think that they don’t want them in the SPL to ensure season books continue to be sold. Big Dermot thinks they are ‘a fantastic club with a fantastic history’. Ever get the feeling you’re being cheated?

Oh John you just can’t help yourself blaming Celtic or the Board for things that they may have little or no control over. Or things that we are simply priced out of given the level of resource we have versus the EPL. While it’s seductive to behave in a world that we would like to think exists it’s a healthier option to accept and deal with the world the way it is. It really does cut down on anxiety and delusion.

John , you have no idea of the situation re Roberts . Man City may want £20 or more million. His wages demand may be in excess of £100,000 per week . He may want to play in EPL .
It maybe or may not be Celtic’s fault that he isn’t signed , but sure we blame the board any way .

I am not sure any Celtic fans should go to the loyalist hole Windsor . PSNI will not protect Celtic fans . The main aim of the PSNI will be ensure safety for Linfield scum.
Was it 1978 that Celtic played in Belfast , the police baton charged Celtic fans without provocation . Celtic Chairman said he wouldn’t let Celtic play in Belfast again . Some people may argue that times have in 40 yrs, in some ways yes .
However there are more loyalist marches & certainly raised levels of Protestant bigotry

So you think City were asking for 20 million for Roberts and Roberts is asking for 100 grand a week. That is delusional. Roberts would have been aware of what was on offer at Celtic Park before he walked out of the door and said ‘you don’t know what is going to happen’. He knew it was between the club and Man City. Rodgers himself said he was speaking to City about Roberts and then nothing. Roberts was never off social media for the first two weeks of the holiday and then nothing. Why? And why did this only happen after Celtic negotiated with City in an attempt to get this one finished early, before the manager went on holiday. And then incomes Jonny Hayes. We can surmise that Celtic’s offer to City was not even a start of negotiations, despite both sides being in contact with each other for 18 months about Roberts. I suppose it is beyond the realms of the imagination that Celtic tried to low ball Man City with an offer that barely covered their 4.5 to 5 million outlay to Fulham. I mean Celtic don’t have any previous for small, cheap thinking, do they. We were told he was the priority of the summer. Maybe Brendan is just about to find out how much say he really has at Celtic Park. Remember, Celtic have spent very little recently. For a team desperate to play in the CL the spending is pitiful. Almost as if they are waiting to see if they can muddle through with what they have. Surely that is not the tactic. Perish the thought.
As for playing in Belfast at this time. If there is any chance of trouble. If there is any chance of Celtic being dragged into something then the game should be switched. That is any chance. And there is an enhanced possibility that there could be trouble, liklihood is there won’t be but that is not the criteria you go with. It is called risk assessment. Every game has to have one.

Fair enough. But are you saying that this game is just the same as any other? It has the same risk factor as playing Cliftonville? If not should people be put at risk because you want to go? What happens if there is a riot and UEFA in their wisdom decide that Celtic supporters should be banned from travelling to all games in this years competition. Because of a riot at essentially a meaning less game which Celtic could and should win about 12-0 over the two legs. Is this fair on the thousands of other Celtic supporters who may want to travel in future rounds. If Celtic refuse to handle tickets it could make the game even more risky. But make no mistake if something goes awry, which is more of a possibility than at other games, then the club as a whole may suffer. I think you are being a little disingenuous when you are comparing this game with the game againat Cliftonville, even you must see this. Cliftonville don’t play the Billy Boys or have Orange bands for halftime entertainment afterall.

John,

Utter mince and unless you’re a total Muppet you know it.

Of course there’s a possibility of trouble, as there’s at practically any other game.

I was in Instanbul the other year there and the same old shite was being peddled “Get to Taksim Square early, wait hours for a bus, which takes hours, get there early with nothing to do” or…

Talk to locals and be reassured that you can stay in the old town, get a short ferry across and have a good time before heading to the game with the Fener fans.

I don’t think I’ve encountered a time in 40 odd years where the local knowledge wasn’t spot on.

BG, good news if Celtic are talking to the local CSCs and not listening to the knicker wetters.

I s’pose it’s too late to suggest 3pm Saturday, if it can’t be normal time!?

Again the possibility of trouble is greater than at other games including games against new rangers. The timing is also significant with tensions raised significantly during that particular week. As they say timing is all. The game could not go ahead at the scheduled time due to trouble but Celtic are now willing to bend over backwards, cancel a high profile friendly against Lyon to accommodate a load of mad orangemen and ensure they get a chance to abuse our players. Very good of Celtic to be so accommodating. If only they were so accommodating to our own fans. Why should previous plans be torn up to accommodate Linfield. To help them earn more TV money. Either the polic say the game can go ahead on the 11th or the 12th or we play in Glasgow and play in Belfast on the 18th. there is no way, as a point of principle we should be allowing them to dictate when the game is played to maximise their revenue. This is the first qualifier for us, for them it is the CL final. Celtic are being told what to do by Linfield and the club just accepts it. UEFA would have no choice but to shift the game if Celtic weren’t bending over. And what is Celtic’s attitude. Don’t go. If you have doubts don’t bother going. In fact we won’t sell you a ticket. I suppose if there is a major avoidable incident which results in injury the club will kindly put the photo of the injured on the big screen at Celtic Park at half-time in a future game.

Dear dear.

I’m, as is the official Celtic website, aware of this high profile friendly against Lyon, that’s regrettably had to be cancelled.

Care to enlighten me and perhaps others?

I believe Linfield dug their heels in regarding playing home leg first, as is the right of any wee diddy team that expect to get hammered.

Your views on Celtic’s position are pure Walter Mitty and the club will consult with those on the ground before agreeing anything, which is perfectly fine.

Hopefully the end result will be that the game goes ahead with Celtic fans and UEFA appreciative of the club being flexible (goodwill in the bank in case it’s needed in future).

The obvious solution to the issue surrounding these ties is to swap the legs around thus removing the whole 12th bigot festival from the equation.
The Polis in NI wanted this and for the fucking life of me l cannot fathom why UEFA don’t take their advice and overrule the Clubs?

The Cha

Seriously? Neither club nor fans want to change but UEFA should change anyway, WTF?

Yes on the say so of the Polis who after all are the supposed experts on crowd management and safety?
The ties still get played in the same grounds only the week they happen in that alter.
The Polis can then with the shite of the 12th squared away concentrate their efforts on the game.

Charlie it was the most logical solution.
Celtic should have insisted on this, but for some reason let Linfield decide the date.
Once again our board seem incapable of standing up for the good name of our club.

EARLIER this week, Celtic were drawn against Linfield or La Fiorita of San Marino to open our UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign, with the away leg due to be played first, on 11 or 12 July, and the home leg to be played at Celtic Park on 18 or 19 July.
Following security concerns raised by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), Celtic has taken part in discussions with Linfield and the PSNI over recent days. While there can be an option to reverse the fixtures if both clubs agree, during discussions, Linfield made it clear that they did not wish to reverse the tie and they wanted play their home leg first.
In addition, as is often the case in football, Celtic’s football management team wished to play our away leg first so that we could benefit from the advantage of playing the second leg at home in front of our supporters at Celtic Park for this crucial European tie.
Following the discussions, it was agreed among the clubs and PSNI and has now been confirmed with UEFA that, should Linfield progress to the Second Qualifying Round, Celtic’s UEFA Champions League match against Linfield will take place at Windsor Park on Friday, July 14, with a 5pm kick-off.
No tickets will be available for Celtic supporters for the match. The safety and security of all Celtic supporters travelling and attending matches is of paramount importance to the Club.
Should La Fiorita of San Marino qualify for the next round, the first leg match would take place on 11 or 12 July.
Regardless of opposition, Celtic’s home leg of this qualifying round will take place at Celtic Park on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, and entry to this first home European qualifier will once again be included as part of the 2017/18 Season Ticket.
If the tie against Linfield proceeds, it will not affect the friendly match between Celtic and Lyon at Celtic Park on 15 July – more information on this match will follow as soon as possible.

Weered I think the worry is before the fans get to the stadium and after . You know the lay of the land fair enough I’d be be more worried if it was Ajax in Amsterdam where there is no march going on just a football game with guaranteed attacks and no police protection

Jimmy,

Thanks for posting this, almost 24 hours after Celtic teased fans with an announcement about an announcement.

I’ll keep my powder dry but would like to think that the AICSC will have something to say about this.

one quick thought – if there’s no Celtic fans why is the game not being held on the 12th as scheduled? If the answer is it will reduce the Linfield attendance then they should be told GTF!

Totally agree m8, it’s a disgrace .

As the Celtic website clearly stated, the possibility was there to swap the ties over as that week is one of increased tension with the prospect of an increased level of, lets say, antagonism. But Linfield don’t want this as they will not have a live game for the second leg, as they are liable to take a hiding at Celtic Park. therefore they have requested that the date be moved and sought an accommodation with Celtic. These fellas being our close friends have got that accommodation, when they should have been told to GTF. If there is any increased tension or chance of violence the games should have been switched. Seems a couple of you lads like the idea of a home tie for you more than anything else. You seem to have been accommodated. You will doubtless rejoice in the cash this game will bring to Linfield. Because the only reason this game is going ahead in this week is to make them richer and accommodate their supporters. And you may live in Belfast but you seem to have missed the Orange Band which paraded on the field against new rangers last summer. I am very aware of the geography and politics of Belfast and have spoken to a few people I know about the game and the majority believe this to be a monumentally bad idea and that the ties should be witched. No one had the same views as two posters on here. Any trouble will hurt Celtic as Celtic are the only club that will progress from this tie.

I just don’t get it when we’re supposedly cresting a wave and we get get this shit.

A lot of people bang on about how wonderful Lawwell is but he’s our main man here and we end up with this totally bag of shit.

He probably costs us £2m a year but Desmond sidelined him last year due to his Delia disaster, Rodgers slaughtered him for not doing the business in January and he was rumoured to be up for the Sunderland CE job before Martin Bain, who helped sink the Huns, got the job.

There is a track record against both old rangers and Sevco of mostly well policed relatively safe games – at least at the stadium. There have been a few incidents and yet I think it’s fair to say that as a Celtic supporter I feel pretty safe at Glasgow Derbies.

Frank McGaaaarvey

Mike Ashley has sold all of his shares (putting the kibosh on Ralph’s pish-stained source claiming that Llambas was due a seat on the board). Sevco immediately installed as favourites to win next season’s Champions League. Oh, and the 2018 World Cup as well.

Seriously folks, stay away from Sky Sports News if at all possible. Level 5 has as many slimy tentacles in there as they do in the SMSM.

For me the correct decision has been made by not taking any tickets. Personally i think the board have taking into account of the past actions and threats made from uefa due to a minority misbehaving outside uefas remit. The threat of playing behind closed doors in Europe must be very real otherwise we would have took the tickets. In the interests for all I’m bebind the board on this decision.

I’m with Paul on this, the board have a duty of care to look after the support, I totally get why supporters want to see every game, the board are not refusing to take tickets for this game, just to spite us, the bottom line is they see themselves as an employer, with a duty to look after the best interests of everyone, players and supporters.
We would be blamed for any shit that came from this game, how would the support feel if we were banned from any subsequent games, due to trouble in Belfast, no we would not like that at all, its not just about this game, see the bigger picture.
