Celtic Diary Tuesday June 20: Off To Belfast In The Green ?

The arrangement for the second round of qualifying matches for the 2017-18 Champions League took place yesterday, and threw up-I hesitate to say vomited-a possible clash with the worlds Second most successful club, Linfield.

Successful in this context is defined by the same criteria that another club with similar supporters also defones success, I would hasten to add.

This is known as …

Celtic face the winners of the first round qualifier between Linfield and La Fiorita of San Marino.

The Hoops will travel for the first leg, which was to be played on the 12th if July, but most of those policing the match had prior engagements that day.

As did most of the clubs officials..

Anyhoo, the game has been moved to the tenth,

and if you thought there was a touch of destiny about playing Linfield, how about La Fiorita ?

S.P. La Fiorita is a Sammarinese football club, based in Montegiardino. The club was founded in 1967. Fiorita currently plays in Girone A of Campionato Sammarinese di Calcio. The team’s colors are blue, yellow and white.

I’m on the point of booking a flight to Kiev, just in case. you can’t ignore these signs , you know.

Season Competition Round Club Home Away Aggregate
2012–13 UEFA Europa League 1Q Latvia Liepājas Metalurgs 0–2 0–4 0–6
2013–14 UEFA Europa League 1Q Malta Valletta 0–3 0–1 0–4
2014–15 UEFA Champions League 1Q Estonia Levadia Tallinn 0–1 0–7 0–8
2015–16 UEFA Europa League 1Q Liechtenstein FC Vaduz 0–5 1–5 1–10
2016–17 UEFA Europa League 1Q Hungary Debrecen 0–5 0–2 0–7
2017–18 UEFA Champions League 1Q Northern Ireland Linfield

Another sign you shouldn’t ignore is that La Fiorita have scored only once in their previous ten champions league games.

and when they did…

Linfield, with their formidable record in world football should march comfortably into the next round.

Should Celtic be worried ?

Not really, but there is potential for any money to be made to be swiftly returned to UEFA in the form of a fine.

There is word that Celtic may not take any tickets, but the Belfast locals won’t let that stand in the way of getting to see either the team they love or the team they hate.

Same goes for the return in Glasgow.

Off the pitch, its the worst possible tie we could have had.

The Belfast Telegraph reported it as such

Police are facing the security nightmare of a possible powderkeg clash between Linfield and Celtic in Belfast – on the eve of the Twelfth celebrations.

The sides are on course to meet in what would be a highly-charged fixture at Windsor Park on July 11. They will clash at the second stage of qualifying for the Champions League on the Eleventh Night if the Blues beat a little-known side from San Marino in the opening round. The PSNI confirmed it is in discussions over a potential tie, which would come at a time when tensions are already running high around parades.

One option is moving the game forward from 7.45pm to a 5pm kick-off, although that would still require a huge policing operation on a day when resources are already stretched.

Andrew McQuillan, a crowd safety expert, said: “If you wanted to pick the worst possible day to hold a match like that, it’s probably July 11.

“There are other competing factors for policing and security right across Northern Ireland on that day and that week.

“It’s also one of the highest-risk games in terms of security that we have had here for some time.”

However, Linfield officials insisted they are confident the tie will go ahead without incident, and are looking forward to what will be one of the biggest games in the club’s history.

Blues chairman Roy McGivern said security issues would be discussed in the coming days, but said he had no concerns about staging a game on July 11.

The BBC added

The clubs discussed arrangements for a potential match, should Linfield first defeat La Fiorita of San Marino, after Monday’s draw in Switzerland.

The schedule date for the match is problematic as it coincides with the ‘Twelfth’ marches in Northern Ireland.

Linfield have proposed an early kick-off, which Celtic are amenable to.

Blues chairman Roy McGivern told BBC Sport the club has provisionally suggested a 17:00 or 17:30 kick-off on Tuesday, 11 July, subject to consultation with the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

McGivern said playing the home leg first is still “the preferred choice” of the Irish Premiership champions.

David Healy’s side will host La Fiorita at Windsor Park on 28 June, with the return leg on 4 July.

If the Blues progress, they will play the 1967 European Cup winners for the first time.

Celtic defeated Irish League opposition in Belfast four years ago with a 3-0 win over Cliftonville in a Champions League qualifier.

Its a nightmare.

And their “history ” pays deference to their colonial cousins… including a bizarre almost Ibroxian claim about a previous seasons cup counting the year after, giving them a world record…

Historically, as the most dominant club in Northern Irish football, Linfield holds several domestic records and even a world record. The club was one of the eight founding members of the Irish League in 1890, as well as the inaugural winners and one of only three clubs to have competed in every top division season, having never suffered relegation. Linfield has won a record 52 league championships to date – more than twice as many titles as any other Northern Irish club and the second-highest tally of national top-flight titles won by any club worldwide – behind the world record of 54 Scottish league titles won by Rangers.[6] Linfield won a clean sweep of all the trophies in a single season in the 1921–22 season, and again in 2005-06. They narrowly missed out on claiming 7 trophies in a single season in 1961–62 season, only failing to win the North South cup. They did however win that trophy in the 1960–61 season. Due to fixture congestion in that season, the final for the 1960–61 season was played in 1962, and Linfield paraded the trophy erroneously as the 7th of a still tremendous haul of 6 trophies in a single season. Glenavon won the trophy for the 1961–62 season, similarly due to fixture congestion the final for that season was played at the start of 1963. Glenavon to this day still hold the trophy as it was never competed for again. Linfield has once won all four available domestic trophies available in the modern era, in a single season, to achieve a quadruple. They have also won three domestic trebles along with a world record 24 domestic doubles.[7] The club has lifted the Irish Cup a record 43 times, the League Cup a record nine times, and has been all-Ireland champion (excluding the 12 all-Ireland league titles won prior to the partition of Ireland in 1921) on four occasions – 1962, 1971, 1980 and 2005. The club has never won a European trophy, but did reach the quarter-finals of the 1966–67 European Cup

If only they’d gone a little further that year…

On the whole, their European record suggests the tie is little more than a bye for Celtic..

Competition P W D L GF GA GD
European Cup/UEFA Champions League 63 6 22 35 55 112 −57
UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League 32 9 7 16 36 61 −25
Cup Winner’s Cup 6 2 0 4 6 11 −5
Inter-Cities Fairs Cup 4 1 0 3 3 11 −8
Total 105 18 29 58 100 195 –95

I think it may be awkward, may even be one to forget, but if players and fans treat it for what it is, a tricky but easily winnable game against a smal but plucky club we’ll be fine.

Just don’t get dragged into all the palaver.

Meantime, get involved with this. There’s a storm coming, and we need to be ready.

I feel sorry for Celtic regarding this tie, I really do.
A club open to all,is once again brought into a sectarian ambush,by all and sundry.
It’s the worst draw ever for Celtic.
The hatred of Celtic,is even worse over there, than at Ibrokes or swinecastle.
Yet again the good name of Celtic, which is welcomed across Europe, will be targeted by the bigots.
Instead of the press condeming that in this day and age, anti catholic parades are still in demand and. played out with flute and drum,is news itself, but a soccer team cannot play a UEFA European tie on its given day, should be of concern to all within UEFA and beyond.
Remember this only when Anton Rogan and Neil Lennon played for Celtic was death threats issued in that part of the world.
Not when they were with different teams, but with Celtic.
Tyars what we are up against.

Canny help but wonder folks opinions on the Dembele situation at Celtic?
My own personal views are …
In an ideal world Dembele stays put for another Season on an improved deal with an agreement that should a serious offer be tabled from a Club he wishes to move to then that be the case.
However we all know fitba is currently operating on another planet when it comes to agents, club and silly money over the border.
We are in actually a very healthy position regarding our attack as we have 2 frontmen who have proven themselves to be clinical at all levels of competition in Dembele and Griffiths.
Truth be told I actually think Griffiths is ATM the more complete article and more likely to stay put at Celtic provided he’s treated right.
With that being the case (IMO) I feel the way forward would be to look at moving Dembele on in Jan for top money provided we aren’t still in the CL and use part of the capital raised from any sale to reinvest in anther quality striker.
Griffiths to me should be the priority this Season I think as he is more likely to be here 3 Seasons from now and no doubt an improved player under the coaching of Brendan?
Dembele will be gone soon enough and I feel we should enjoy it whilst it lasts though accept it won’t be long until it ends.
Anything over £25m and he will be gone that’s a certainty I think and the way the transfer market is shaping up down south that’s peanuts to some Clubs.

In an ideal world he would stay as long as he wants to, but in realistic terms I would be saying to Moussa that we want him until January; if we’re still in Europe after Christmas why don’t you stay and see where you can help take us.
My only issue with that is that player value in January tends to be less than the summer, particularly as he wouldn’t be eligible to play in Europe for anyone else if we sold him.
In terms of keeping him AND Griff happy that is the major worry, but it is Brendan’s problem and we have to trust him to get it right for this season and future seasons.
Don’t think Griff is a better player though, maybe a better finisher, but think Moussa shades it with his pace and power.

The Charlie Saiz International
Reply to  Gerry

As a striker your primary job is finishing chances in my opinion Griffiths scores a greater variety of goals and offers more in terms of movement and graft.
2 different types of player of course but I still maintain Griffiths edges it with experience and all round ability.
It’s a nice problem to have mind having 2 great finishers to choose from.
Totally agree on the Europe aspect Gerry though any money lost in January (when Clubs get desperate in England) would be made up by qualifying for the Groups and having a good showing in there.
If he bangs a few in these qualifiers watch the vultures start to circle bud.

Monti

” all round ability “?
I’d question that.
Firstly, Moussa brings the physicality to the attack that is essential playing with one up front, Leigh is more of an ‘ in behind ‘ type striker.
Range of goals? i’d take issue with you on that as well, Moussa has shown he can head accurately & comfortable finishing on EITHER foot, where Leigh is all left sided.
Just a side note CS,but the transfer fee to take Moussa away from Celtic is probably in the £30+m bracket…..now at no point in his career would Griffiths go for that kind of money.
At the moment we are blessed with two quality strikers, i still feel we need to sign another.

HH

Rebus67

Charlie,

I do not think there is any comparison between Dembele and Griff. Dembele is the superior player….why else would top teams be interested n spending 25 million plus on him! Griff will never fetch anything like that. Griff is primarily a goalscorer, and a good one, but Dembele is that and more. He has the vision to bring other players into goal scoring opportunities.

The problem for Dembele is that he is still developingand needs games. He has had a reasonable season in the Championship plus 75% of a good season in Scotland. Next season may not be as good as teams will not be surprised by his strength and shooting. If that happens, he will have to be content with a move to a mid-table EPL team. So does he gamble by moving now to such as Milan, MU, Arsenal, athletico Madrid, or does he get more experience playing for us in the CL and boost his profile? If he moves now, the chances are he will be loaned out from his new team…..not ideal for his development. His handlers seem to be aware of his desire to develop, and he is money in the bank for them. It is just a matter of time before they cash in. There is no rush. Unless a ridiculous offer comes in for him, he will stay at Celtic for at least part of the season. If he stays, Griff will be #2. If he goes, BR will buy another striker and Griff will be #2. Ings of Liverpool would be a good bet.

Griff has to decide if he is happy with these scenarios. If he is not, then he will move on. I think BR would sell him for the correct offer. If I were Griff, I would stay…..this is the best place for him.

If my post below ever comes back from behind the sofa, it would say that Dembelle like previous transfers from Celtic to the EPL will stay another season at least, if that is what he wants.
He and his advisors will decide not Celtic.
IMHO he will go to Real Madrid with Zidane, where he will continue to develop into one of the best strikers anywhere.
There is no comparison between Griff. and the belle, we Celtic won the lottery when we got him at a steal.

The Charlie Saiz International
Reply to  Rebus67

His potential makes him worth more bud he’s way ahead in terms of development at a young age.
Griffiths is probably not far off his full potential where as the signs are Dembele will go way beyond to that higher level.
That’s the difference though the fact remains his (Griffiths)scoring record at Celtic more than matches Dembele

Charlie Saiz. Keep Dembele as long as we’re in Europe this year. Hopefully, until May 2018! Hang on to him for that long, whatever his price tag. Griff ain’t going anywhere. When we sell Dembele for £30 million plus, we can add that to the £30 million plus we get from Europe, with Dembele’s help. Griffiths then becomes our main striker and we buy someone else with the money. But Dembele must stay for another season to see what he is really worth. Could we sometimes use Griffiths more often in our attacking three? However, Sinclair is the real key to our future. Can Sinclair sometimes play up front on his own in our 4-2-3-1? Injuries to both Dembele and Griffiths would really cripple us though. We need another proven goalscorer (besides Sinclair)for emergencies and the sixty plus games we’ll play in 2017-18.
Will Laim Henderson figure in our immediate plans?
How about Ajer as a defender? Almost forgot about him.

I think we could use Griffiths playing off to the right in a supporting role or in a pairing deploying a 3-5-2 (Rodgers has played this system previously at Liverpool and Swansea) or alternatively in a 3-4-3 with Sinclair/Hayes on the left?
I think the signing of Hayes gives us good options in that respect as he’s comfortable on either side.

Sorry, “Liam” who isn’t “Laim.” The lad is a good footballer with a bright future.

For we’re of to Dublin in the green in the green,
where the bayonet’s slash the orange sash.
Our new Celtic supporting Dubliner, Johnny Hayes, cannot contain his excitement or start the new season, playing for the inspirational manager Brendan Rodgers, I sense a wee tingle doon ma breeks, cos I believe in every drop of rain that flows,
someone will come to expose, his talent!!!
Gone yersell Johnny, you have nothing to prove or to fear, make yersell a legend. Dublin expects.
