Celtic Diary Monday May 29: When History Was Made

After a nervous start, Celtic finally overcame a resolute and enthusiastic Aberdeen to win the Scottish Cup and become the first team in the world to win all domestic competitions without losing a game.

The hoops started a little nervously and struggled to find any sort of rhythm and it wasn;t a surprise to see the dons take the lead after some shoddy defending from a corner,

It also wasn’t a surprise when Celtic equalised a moment or two later, as Aberdeen struggled to adapt to being in front.

Despite what the papers said, the hoops then played the long game, very similar to the great Mohammed Ali against George Foreman, when th tactic was simply to wear out the opposition.

Long before Tom Rogic drove through the defence to score the winner, the Dons were not defending out of neccesity, but simply because they didn’t have the strength to run any more.

It may have been a little closer than we’d expected, or hoped, but as I’d been certain it would go to extra time ( See Saturdays diary) my sense of relief wasn’t perhaps as great as that of others.

Indeed , if it had gone into 120 minutes, we’d have been 3-1 winners, as I explained to the bookie, but apparently that doesn’t count as a winning bet.

One moment of controversy in the game highlighted something that I’ve been harping on about all season.

Jayden Stockley, presumably aggrieved at having a ridiculous first name, has been waving his elbows around all season. As many a mother warn their sons about having someones eye out with that, Stockleys elbow connected with Keiran Tierney, and the prediction that someone was going to get hurt came painfully true.

There has been little condemnation of Stockley, Tom English nobly apart, as the general opimiom seems to be it was an accident.

English was a little more realistic in his assessment.

If Jayden Stockley had whacked Kieran Tierney by accident then surely his instinct would have been to show some concern. He didn’t.

He’s right. It would have been the first thing anyone would do after such an incident.

Lets look again at the “collision ”

Image result for vicious elbow to the face

And lets remind ourselves of Stockleys reaction..

Image result for ha ha

Well, thats me convinced.

Sadly, it meant that the referees failure to clamp down on attacks on Celtic players throughout the season had made a difference to this game, and of course, led to a second horrific injury on Keiran Tierney.

We can only hope it doesn’t affect him psychologically, and that manager Rodgers calls publicly for better protection from referees.

Still, captain Scott Brown had some words of comfort for the left back..

The player had been to hospital and raced back to the ground for the presentation, which is what you can do when your employer pays its medical insurance..

Image result for joe garner hospital photo

Meanwhile, if Tierney is in need of a chat, there’s a fellow at Celtic Park who can help him deal with recovering from injury and still go on to be world class..

Image result for danny mcgrain celtic

There was also a little battle going on between Scott Brown and Ryan Jack, who is leaving aberdeen, possibly for “rangers “, depending on if the Ibrox side can find any money down the settee, which was summed up..

So with domestic dominance achieved, next year, supporters will be looking for a bit more out of the European campaign.

Former striker Henrik Larsson, who knows a bit about European success at club level, had some words of caution when he arrived in town yesterday for the legends charity match, astonishingly watched by Celtic Parks biggest crowd of the season. He scored a hat trick, by the way…

“It’s going to be tough in Europe, but if they progress the way they are progressing then maybe one day they will do well. But let’s give them time to build,”

“If he wants to achieve a European final he will need to add players.

“Here we are putting pressure on Brendan Rodgers to try and reach a European final. I think he will need time. If he can achieve that straight away it would be amazing.”

Patience is the key.

It could be argued that the record breaking undefeated season of 2016-17 has set the bar too high already, but there’s always another trophy to chase, always another memory to carve.

The manager seems to be up for the challenges ahead, as he curtly told a BBC Scotland reporter,

“I was born into Celtic,”

There’s been only pride for me and it is a huge privilege to manage Celtic. I was born into Celtic, into the Celtic family and I always wanted to manage Celtic. It was the right time for everyone, myself, the club, and now we’ve created an identity this season that allows us to hopefully build on this and improve over the coming years but to achieve what we did this year is a really spectacular achievement and it’s surreal really.

And he’s already thinking of next season…

Uruguayan defender Manuel Cacares is “on the radar “. He’s currently at Southampton, but with the saints likelt to lose Virgil van Dijk this summer, maybe we shouldn’t get too excited.

Johnny Hayes of aberdeen has been mentioned, meaning no one is getting excited anyway.

As for players leaving, there was a little bit of bad news regarding Patrick roberts, as Manchester city suddenly remembered who he was..

Congrats !!!👏👏👏🏆🏆🏆

Glancing at the stories circulationg this morning, and nearly every Celtic player is being sold this summer.

No wonder it was difficult to get a cup final ticket. They all went to English scouts.

Sure its a sign we’re doing well, but hopefully these clubs will be sent packing with their pennies, and hopefully we can get a chance to build on what we have, instead of starting all over again.

This time round, I’m certain we’ll keep everyone the manager wants to keep…

Sometimes , though, to change the subjext with a cleverly thought out link, one can be forced to keep something one doesn’t want.

Something one didn’t want in the first place.

A couple of weeks ago, under pressure SFA chief had a chat with Dave King the latest in a line of businessmen tasked with fleecing the gullible Ibrox support.

We hear from an astonishingly well refreshed and almost indecipherable source that the subject of their discussion was the issuing of a European licence to the cash strapped Ibrox club, and repercussions should the SFA refuse to grant one.

King , it appears, has threatened to shut the club down should no licence be forthcoming,

Regan must be forced to either confirm or deny this, as yet again it shows that one partcular club is asking for favours, and disregarding the rules.

I;m not interested in Kings view of events, he doesn’t tell the truth anyway.

But Regan still holds a position of power, and must be made to remember that he has a job to do, honestly and transparently.

Either that, or we get someone in that does.

I’d also like to take a moment to thank bobby Madden, Saturdays referee, for having one of his better games. Stockley incident aside.

It must have  been tough for him…

It doesn’t matter , to a certain extent…

Image result for rodgers three trophies

Next season it will be tougher. Of course it will.

Aberdeen may have been thrity points adrift, but a record points total for the club suggests they are improving. And theres no denying that Saturday was a lot closer than the stats suggest..

Hearts, too, will settle and become more consistent.

Hibernian won’t be a pushover either, they have a manager who knows how to succeed at this level.

Then there’s “rangers “, if they survuive the summer, who will be armed with a new song…

Repeat x50….not often seen in lyrics outside the hip hop genre.

On Saturday we gave you this picture.. and in no way suggested it had anything to do with David Murray and bonuses for journalists…

Out.

Boyata? Would consider a decent offer.

In? Strong goalkeeper to push Gordon
Ball playing central defender to partner Jozo, Boyata while effective and handy to have in the squad, simply does not have the ability to move comfortably and link up play from the back, distribution lacking.
This has to be a priority position to strengthen.
Armstrong, Mcgregor, Rogic, Brown, Forrest and Sinclair will fill the midfield positions but i think Brendan will try and get a top signing in midfield.
Dembele & Griffiths up front, another striker is a must.

So for me 4 positions need strengthened with real quality in order to progress in Europe.

1-quality back up to Gordon
2-an experienced central defender who is outstanding in possession and distribution of the ball.
3- a central midfielder who can dominate and dictate sitting deeper in midfield, allowing Armstrong to push towards Dembele.
4- a proven goalscorer in European competitions, whether that be in CL or Europa league.

Squad players to provide back up- Johnny Hayes & John Mcginn.

Mickelele

Defo another central midfielder. Brown has been nothing short of phenomenal this year and proved a lot of people wrong, myself included. I thought he was done after last season. Maybe just get another in to push him even more and maybe rest him the odd game. That sounds terrible after the season he has had but I mean it in the nicest possible way, it will benefit us big time.

Reply to  Monti

Monti, I thought Boyata was more reliable than Jozo m8.
He at least tried to get Celtic moving but the space was so compact,I don’t think he has put a foot wrong since he came back in. I think we need a left sided centre back,as the ones we have are all right sided.
But under Brendan Boyata is growing in stature, and has changed my opinion of him completely. Another couple of years under Brendan and he will become even better.
Give the lad a chance.

Yip…Big Jozo seems to get a lot of praise for not doing that much in reality. Boyata is constantly involved and makes countless clearances as the man charged with doing the ugly defensive work. Anyone citing his bringing the ball out from the back should consider 2 things

1: Why arent the quality ball playing midfielders like Armstrong able to go take the ball more when a team are playing a high line against us?

2: Name a team with 2 ball playing central defenders?

I suggested he does the ugly work..why doesn’t Jozo bring the ball out a lot more if he is the classy ball playing defender?

Desi,
My point which i thought i made quite clear, is that we need to be better at the back in terms of distribution.
Look at the Van Dijk & Denayer partnership for an example, it was very comfortable and nerve free watching those two, because they were equally comfortable on the ball, it took the pressure of the midfield.
Boyata did a job this season Desi, but for me he is NOT to be trusted in Europe.

Jimmybee,
I respect your opinion but i disagree with you on Boyata, i’ll stand by my beliefs and views on him.
He would be in the same taxi as Ambrose for me.
We will see in time what Brendan does but i firmly beieve Boyata will be nowhere near the first team next season.

Players for the off…Most of us know who they are, the fringe and forgotten. best of luck one and all.

What about Players to file under “Will they be there next year?” – ( note this is conjecture – not opinion or wishes)

Griffiths – Great distribution and heart, can score but lacks that touch of class and awareness at times to see bigger picture and play the odds in attack which means he wont ever be 1st choice striker in Brendans long term vision

Rogic – Im hoping he’s our “number 10” but talent like his doesn’t go un-noticed and we can expect a few offers I suspect. Wouldn’t be surprised if he is in EPL or even in La Liga next year.

Armstrong – Be interesting if EPL comes calling but that might be the next contract after this one…oh has he signed that deal yet…no….hmmmm,,,interesting times ahead

Forrest – Happy to be back up if Roberts stays? or Championship bound? Will stay if allowed but another plateau period and needs to kick on to keep up.

Bitton – Spain or South of England here we come for Blondie.

Eboue – How long will the latest project need or get? Worrying he hasn’t had any game time since arriving. Too much for the lad or just biding our time? We should know soon enough.

Erik – Talk of departure last year and doesn’t seem happy to be 3rd choice. Another contender for a move to the lower end of the EPL, the Championship money lure or over to mainland Europe.

Christie – Interesting times for Ryan..could the loan period have shown Brendan he can do it in Scotland and get his chance or could he be a bargaining chip for Hayes, or dragged down to Sunderland with McInnes if he goes there.

Desi,
Disagree with you about Forrest, only the scintillating form of Roberts form kept James out, which i’m sure James himself would acknowledge.
The fact Brendan played regularly start to middle of the season would suggest how much Brendan trusts him.

mike

Its gonny be difficult for Brendan to find any top notch players to strengthen the team.
One strong central defender is needed to add a more physical presence, preferably a good heeder of the ball.
In midfield we seem to have a lot of creative midfielders, a wee bit more physical presence with the ability to link play, like Joe Ledley would be ideal. We also need another striker to back up Griff. Sometime soon Dembelle will be gone and will need to be replaced.

That would do it for me, just to gives us that wee bit extra security at the back.
Mighty pleased with Gordon and K.T. Lustig, not to sure, Broony, Armstrong, Rogic all good, with Roberts to stay and would swap GMS for Hayes. Add another striker, job done, I would love to see a Paul Elliot type centre back, he was majestic.

How hard it must be to balance the budget that Brendan will be offered to strengthen the team, to identify players who will add value and the ability to raise the level of the teams performance.
Competition from the EPL and other big money leagues means that he will have to be smarter both to identify and beat of that financial competition, will other loans be the answer? I don’t think that he will want that, but he may be left with no alternative.
That balance, between the SPFL and Europe, good luck Brendan, that is where he will earn his lolly.

The Strange Case of the Ebouie who Disappeared from Sight!

We spent a fair chunk of change on this player yet he hardly appeared in the first team! Very strange! Reports are that he contracted malaria and this would certainly affect his stamina. Can he work through this and still perform? Is that the reason that he has not appeared? He would seem to be a natural replacement for Brown but, in spite of his injuries and age, he hardly misses a game. Perhaps Brown’s presence in the team is crucial and so Ebouie must wait. His signing would seem to have killed off the chance of McGinn coming, although he would have been a less expensive signing.

Perhaps the reason for his lack of appearance has more to do with his contract? We pay depending on first team appearances.

As Desi says next season is make or break for Kouassi.

I have adopted a new style of posting. Post first, then think later! My post on Ebouie got me thinking. Without knowing the personality of a player it is very difficult to judge if they will succeed. In my case, I had all the determination in the world, physicality and speed, but I lacked sufficient ball skills. As a callow youth I was convinced that given time and opportunity, I would improve the latter. Sadly, I got neither so I became something other than a professional footballer…..a critic!
In my time I have seen players that I thought could never succeed because they liked the booze too much or were too small for their position…only to be proved completely wrong. In counterpoint, I have known players who had wonderful skills that could leave you looking silly but they failed because they had no heart or determination, and could not handle the physical side of the game. In other cases, football was simply a recreation for them and their career ambitions lay elsewhere.
This is why, for most of us, it is impossible to assess the futures of players such as Ebouie, Christie and Henderson, for example. We do not see them training; we do not know them personally. Vital data is missing. Opinions become a crap shoot…but still fun! Remember that season that Brown was poor and many wondered why we paid 4 mil for him? It was during the Strachan era, I think? Eventually, it emerged that his sister was seriously ill. Again, important information was not available and opinions were formed.
Finally, apart from the combination of attitude and skills, we have that old fickle finger of fate…serendipity ! How does anyone succeed?

Think the player you were thinking about is Martin Caceres at Southampton … but they just released him so even if they sell Virgil, there would be no problem in signing him. Only played one game for Southampton after signing as a free transfer tho .. maybe fitness problems ? I do laugh tho at these reports that we are going to sell such and such .. like Moussa .. DO the media (dare I say my colleagues) think that with this extra money .. Celtic won’t spend it and get even stronger ?? What is it they say .. “Watch out for what you wish for !”

Pigs to the slaughter, a bit like sevco.
I watched the first game against Lincoln Imps and thought we needed a wholesale clear out. BR in that short time noted the weaknesses ignored by Delilah, and immediately put a plan in place, which ultimately achieved the treble.
He has improved things and will continue to tweak the team. Some players will go and a few will come in, he is a master tactician and a great motivator, things will only get better.
The last team to beat Celtic, the mighty Barca, it will be interesting to see how long they remain Invincibles.
It’s great to support the best team in the world, supported by the greatest fans.

Think it says a lot about Rodgers when he abandoned a training session last Thursday because he thought the quality and effort the players were putting in wasn’t good enough. ‘ It’s not how we do things’ Superb

Sorry Rebus but McGinn and Hayes are nowhere near good enough for where we are hoping to go.

I like to see players that are Celtic daft come to the Hoops. They play for the shirt to a greater extent. I agree that both McGinn and Hayes are not what we want now. Pity because McGinn could become the real deal under BR.
