Celtic Diary Monday April 17: Referees Do Matter

The late great Jock Stein once said that if you were good enough , the referees don’t matter. He also said that beating Rangers was just another two points, and as we are aware that he never held the latter viewpoint in the dressing room, as many ex players will testify, we can safely assume that he was equally flexible on the bit about referees.

Celtic dropped another two points yesterday, and whilst the unbeaten run is still safe, there are a few signs that players may well have switched off. The league has been won, the side were unbeaten in getting to the title, and thoughts are probably elsewhere by now.

Thats to be expected, to an extent.

It is difficult to motivate and refocus a workforce that knows it has already achieved its set goal.ย

That line is from a football365 article on Tony Pulis, who is known for getting his players toforty points in a season, and not much else. Forty points is the amount required to stay in the EPL, apparently, and for some clubs little else matters.

Celtic set out to win the league, they’ve done that, and it will not be easy to get back to the heights of earlier in the season.

However, there may be a little more motivation from another source after yesterdays game.

Referee Don Robertson managed to outrage players and supporters alike when he awarded a late penalty to Ross County which can be described as , er , not a penalty.

Here is the incident that led to the decision.. look at it very carefully..

However, its all about what the match officials saw, and how they interpret events..so we must look at it through their eyes in order to judge..

Image result for man beaten up gif

Whilst we know that the referee has previous against Celtic-he oversaw the tackle on Keiran Tierney that could have broken his leg,

perhaps its worth looking at Erik Sviatchenko, who also has form in harming opponents purely by concentrating his thoughts in an aggressive manner, which the ref may well have been aware of..

Shortly afterwards, Scott Brown tackled Liam Boyce late, and he was ordered from the field.

Again, lets examine what we saw…

Image result for childrens slide tackle gif

And then use the referees eyes to see what he saw…

Image result for man shot gif

The club can -and will- appeal the sending off, and the two match ban that comes with a straight red. This came as a surprise to nearly everyone commenting on the game, as they happily trumpeted that the Celtic captain would miss the Cup semi final next weekend..

Sky commentators were enraptured, the written press fell over themselves to tweet the news, showing their ignorance of the rules. This was compounded when it became clear that Browns appeal wouldn’t be heard until April 28, something all the clubs had been informed about pre match, as today is a bank holiday and the referees match report won;t be handed in until tomorrow, which will start the sequence of events.

We do, however, have a copy of the Celtic managers comments on the referees performance, which should be taken into account…

Brown, if fit, will face “rangers “.

The fall out continues , however, and the debate about referees is back at the forefront of our thoughts.

Are they anti-Celtic , or are they just not very good at their jobs ?

The evidence tends to point to the latter, although Celtic do seem to suffer more than most, that may be because we’re always on live tv. Motherwell benefitted from a goal that never was yesterday, and in other instances we’ve seen a Hearts player booked when two Motherwell players bumed into each other and…hang on..the referees are all Motherwell fans!

This clearly isn’t the case-even Motherwell fans aren;’ Motherwell fans, and so therefore we have to look elsewhere for the solution to this problem.

Image result for John fleming Scottish Football Association

This is John Fleming. He’s head of referee development at the SFA. He’s been there since taking over from Hugh Dallas in March 2011.

At the time he said;

ย “I am immensely proud and grateful to have been given this opportunity.

“There are a number of exciting initiatives on the horizon both for the Scottish FA and the referee development department and it is my intention to help facilitate positive changes to benefit the referee fraternity and the game in general.”ย

Stewart Regan added;

“John brings a wealth of experience in refereeing and in the development and education sides of the game.

“He also has a wide of experience of working in business.

“His role will be pivotal to the new Scottish FA strategic plan and his impact since taking the role in an acting capacity since November has been substantial.

“I have received a number of positive comments from the refereeing fraternity and also from his colleagues within the Scottish FA and I am convinced he will be an asset to the organisation.”

In six years, Scotland has failed to develop a single referee who might be deemed as “good “. On the international stage, the likes of Craig Thomson and Willie Collum have been ridiculed for their performances, and yet no one has questioned the ability of Fleming in his post.

What are these exciting initiatives he spoke of back then ? And as for Regan’s strategic plan, we all know what that was.

What is Fleming actually doing to develop referees, and why is it that so many who have come through the ranks under his tutelage are so bloody useless ?

How about someone hauling him in front of the cameras and asking him some questions ?

Sure, the referees aren’t great, but such a catalogue of errors can only be down to the training they are given, and so its probably a good idea to import officials for twelve months or so and send the ones we’ve got back to school.

With a proper teacher.

Elsewhere, and Easter is a holy time, a time of goodwill to all men, or that might be christmas, I get mixed up, so ahead of what may be a lively old joust at Hampden next week, here’s a message for all “rangers ” fans fro the lord gods spiritual leader on earth..

Craig Whyte is now available on twitter, which if genuinely him-@CraigWhyte 22 -could mean that his trial this week will be comedy gold.

Be careful interacting though, as the word on the street is that its a fake account set up by the Sun to snare users into a contempt of court charge.

If you want to follow that trial then follow James Doleman, who will be reporting from the scene, and as usual, he’ll include the bits that the SMSM leave out, such as the truth.

Sorry I’m a bit late today, but I found a gallon of Old Rosies Cloudy Cider in the fridge last night, which helped me through piss poor cop show Lion of Duty, which after four episodes seems to be ignoring the lion.

So I’ve only just got up.

There can only be one picture for the caption competition today,

Great stuff Ralph, spot on with suggesting that Fleming being hauled in front of the cameras and given some very difficult questions, I’m confident we will put the tribute act back to where they belong when we hump them in the semi’s and the league, its true what my friend said, what is the point of the 4th official if they just hold up a board to say how many minutes are left!!!!

Its shocking to experience such cheating and/or ineptness

Brendan has his work cut out to motivate and lift the team as we are flatlining and playing to a too slow tempo ( unless all part of a sly Brendan ploy of course pre Huns games)

Good to see Rogic and Dembele get 60 mins but both way off the pace and Sunday might be too much for themso big decisions for Management team. I think Erik made a few errors (not the pen) and will be replaced if Boyata fit.

both. Some errors in possession and link up with Gordon. Also caught under the cross at County’s first goal.

Thought Jozo had a good game and I think Boyata will be back on Sunday if fit.

More importantly though – I hope we play an actual RIGHT BACK from the start, asking James Forrest top cover that side was rather mental I thought, why not play Gamboa from the start and even protect one of Brown or Armstrong if your needing to give Rogic some game time through the middle.

I know we are up against the feckers here but Brendan could look at himself a bit more and maybe be a little less cavalier in selection and swap like for like where applicable, especially with keeping an eye on forthcoming games and possible suspensions – if Broon gets booked yesterday he misses Aberdeen away etc..no need to tempt fate if we can avoid it etc

Desi,
Don’t agree with you on Boyata, Sviatchenko cam be a bit slack but i still feel Erik and Simunovic is our best pairing.
Agree about the RB position, i expect Lustig to start there on Sunday.
Boyata has been steady to be fair to him, i just don’t fully trust him.

Desi, I agree with you re Rogers’ cavalier approach. I felt he did the same in the last huns game taking off Armstrong for Griffiths, thereby going 4 2 4 and we lost the midfield.

Keep it simple and we will pump them on Sunday.

I thought that Brendan got his team selection wrong, by going with three at the back, if Lustig, and Boyata were injured, then why not go with Gamboa?
Probably to give Rogic some game time and keep Armstrong ticking over, it looked like a training match. I am not a fan of McGregor, I would have taken him of after 60 minutes.
Simonovic, has to be more disciplined, he goes to far forward at times, he was left stranded upfield when the Ross County cross came in leaving Sviatcenko stranded, he also never looked to clever at times.
I expect to see Biton, Lustig and Boyata back in the team on Sunday, as well as Dembelle, his physique is another asset.

Admin

Reply to  mike

Agreed on defence but I don’t think McGregor did anything wrong. If you watch first half, Armstrong loses possession about 3 times in a row. Watch McGregor in possession, simple rotation and pass, doesn’t lose the ball. Might not be glamorous but does the job as needed.

Simonevic was told to get forward, that shows how tight it was in the County half and we were getting nowhere. Sinclair continues to astound me in his ability to be absent in almost every first half of a game. Rogic was errant in his passing (as can be expected) and I don’t think Griff will ever be a sub style of player.

Dembele looks heavy and moves as he looks. More John Hartson than Henrik Larrson and I think Sevco will be happy to put him up against their centre pair. We need to get behind them and so we look at Tierney, Forrest and Roberts to do that job on Sunday.

when will it stop, HOW can it be stopped, can’t the club officially complain or dispute points of the match report?. You talk of boycotts at international level for Celtic fans, that should be a given, what has the sfa. ever done for the club? The core roots of the club are Irish that is where the international allegiance if any should be, of course attending a live match may not be possible but how many actually attend a Scotland game?, don’t forget this is a protestant country with protestant values that are not in our interest in the least. One way to keep giving us a dig is through football and the sfa. with there agendas is the tool. I have never or will ever attend a Scotland game, not for me giving THEM my money, although only 25% Irish, Eire will always get my allegiance and I thank the Lord God Almighty every day for that 25%.

I know Brooney was close to a points build up suspension, but would his red not just be a one match ban in its own right? Or is this because of the points he has already accumulated?

And why would it rule him out the cup game (if we didn’t appeal), wouldn’t the ban just apply in the league? I thought it only carried over to any competition if it was violent conduct?

Seems like I know less about the rules than the ref and that’s tough to take!

Gerry McCulloch was on Twitter citing rulebook earlier and pointing out that “reckless” is no validity for a red card…seems the ref may have dug himself into a hole. Be interesting to watch the wagons get circled.

The best thing would be for Celtic to announce that their lawyer isn’t available for 2 weeks. This is the excuse Hibs used for Lennys sentencing after the fight wae Jim Duffy, the SFA had to suspend the hearing. That would really wind them up something silly and turn the focus back on outdated SFA\SPLF practises

Fleming. ” Experience in Business ” He was a manager in BT who couldn’t have put a nut in a ‘monkey’s mooth’. He was renowned for being a bully and was despised by the Engineers he managed. I always considered him to be a clown but you know what they say about the auld haun shake. He was sponsored by another Balloon of the Knuckle variety who was Flemings boss for a while. John Robertson MP who managed to lose one of the safest Labour seats in Scotland. Robertson was regularly seen taking up two seats in the Crumbledome Directors Box.
I was Robertson’s Boss in BT so I wasn’t one of the troops bullied by Fleming but if evidence of his people skills are needed, remember the comments from the Linesman in the Dougiegate/Dallas episode.

Fleming needs to be grilled on his performance to date which has been appalling.

Just think if these referee decisions were this Sunday coming, the ramifications would have been terrible, the support might have invaded the pitch and all hell would have broken loose.
Its ok for Drummond to lock his door and not allow access to Brendan and then say I will phone him later to apologise. Just think of the reactions if it had been a WINNING penalty and a proud record becomes undone due to honest mistakes AGAIN.
We need to introduce video playbacks for the fourth official to check decisions, like yesterday, fitba. has to get into the nineteenth century, not the twenty first, I see the club’s official statement was made through K.T. I sincerely hope that more is done than this behind the scenes.

The question we need to be asking is what the hell are Celtic doing to stand up for the club? I wasn’t at the game yesterday but have been there, Inverness and Aberdeen before. It takes a lot of time to get there, it costs a lot of money therefore surely the least the ‘life’s blood of the game’ can expect is a fair game. Only two explanations can apply to yesterday, either the referee is completely incompetent or he is corrupt, either due to his own personal bias (bigotry) or on the take. There is only one solution to the problem, he should be sacked. But Celtic should be asking questions of the SFA and pointing out that there is no confidence from any club, possibly one, in the impartiality and/or competence of their referees. Celtic need to step out. Nothing will change if they do not. I would say that a three year period of foreign referees after a complete clear out of Scottish refs and re-training. Celtic supporters should boycott away grounds from now on. This will result in change. I know people want to go to the games but that will result in change. The crowds at places like Ross County, Kilmarnock and Hamilton will be reduced by between 20 and 30%. The only language the cheats will respond to is this kind of action. If we are unwilling to do this then we need to just shut our cowardly mouths and accept it. It has not changed in over 100 years and won’t change if we don’t act. Either we do something or accept the status quo.

It doesn’t matter what TEAM was put out for select today as the dirty lowlife that represent The Scottish Referees Association tried their hardest to prevent the course of a ‘professional Match’, this match should be forwarded to the European Body that is CAS. As for next week CFC should be inviting members of CAS and as many EX-Referees with any credibility to the National Stadium to express a balanced perspective on the Chicanery that will be on show as the TRFC kick 7 bells of shit out of The Mighty Glasgow Celtic, while blowing the whistle for the HUN possession for the most mild of obfuscation cases. On sunday the referee will dish out an early yellow card to Celtic players for their first challenge, Sevco players will be allowed minimum of three challenges before a card is produced.

A march is all well and good and I would participate but refusing the fill the pockets of the other clubs will have an effect on Scottish football. We need to explain why we will not attend. We should not be travelling at considerable cost to be cheated. And until the SFA admit there is a problem with the refereeing in Scotland then kiss good to our cash. believe me Kilmarnock, Ross County etc etc will be supportive of change. And that change should start with the sacking of repeat offenders, an insistence that all refs declare their allegiances and agree to background checks on those allegiances (most refs would declare they are Ayr and Falkirk etc etc fans), any ref who had a season ticket for a club would not be allowed to ref in the same division as the club he supported. And retraining for at least two years. Employ foreign refs, remove the bias and incompetence overnight. Then a mistake will be treated as a mistake. Yesterday was not a mistake. No human being is that hopeless. I fear for Sunday.

Back to Sunday’s game and the decision.
I have now calmed doon a little, but I fail to see why even if the ref is an orange cunt, why he could award the pen.
It’s a meaningless fixture for Celtic,it only brings Ross County level, and there is only a couple of minutes left.
The title is won, the point although robbed of three was keeping the run going.
Why does he award the penalty? What purpose did it serve?
It’s a simple one for me, he knows it will enrage the players,a couple of minutes of our players losing the plot, and bingo, maybe another chance for Ross County,or a sending off for a Celtic player, cue the latter.
It’s blatant cheating, its not even worth the honest mistake shite
Onto next week .
I think Brendan has been planning to go 3 at the back against the Huns, and in recent games this is why we have been trying it out.
I believe it’s the right thing to do in this match,as they out numbered us in the midfield the last twice.
So for me I think he will go
