Celtic Diary Monday April 3: Over The Hump

One of the more annoying trends in social media is the one where people-i think they’re people-refer to wednesday as hump day. apparently it means that we are over the hump and on the way down the hill as far as the working week is concerned.

Thats the Monday to Friday working week which was confined to history under the Thatcher government for all but a few of us.

Celtic won a sixth consecutive title yesterday in considerable style by beating Hearts 5-0 at Tynecastle.

That means we are over the hump on the way to ten, the magical figure which will erase the Cheating Years from Scottish football’s record books.

Celtic sixth consecutive title means that the club have now achieved the feat on three separate occasions, two more than anyone else, and three more than anyone else without imaginative fiscal policy.

The desire for tn is strong, but we should maybe take a seat back and enjoy what is still a remarkable achievement in its own right.

The game itself was as good a game as you’ll see anywhere. Hard but fair, classic goals and an atmosphere that leapt out of the tv screen.

For those in the ground, the Scottish Mestalla lived up to its reputation of intimidation, as Mikael lustig would attest to after he went to get the ball back from some of the less evolved amongst the home support.

The Jambos fan can be seen throwing the ball at Lustig

Another appeared to spit at the Celt, and at the very least wasn’t wishing him good luck…

A Hearts supporter screams in the face of the Hoops defender

There’s a chin asking to be whacked.

Full clip here.. Lustig abused

Despite the grounds shameful record on security, remember the attack on Neil Lennon ?. stewards still failed to appear in front of those responsibe, and as far as I’m aware no one was ejected from the ground.

Maybe the club should take it up with Hearts, and maybe even ask for a neutral venue for the next fixture.

We’ve been asking for protection from referees against the opposition players for some time, is it now time to ask for protection from supporters ?

BBC sportscene made no mention of the incident, and the post match Sky analysis prefereed to concentrate on possible exits for Brendan Rodgers and a number of his key players.

After a great peformance on the day, and a wonderful season all round, obe might perhaps have expected Neil McCann and David Tanner of Sky tv to dwell on these matters, and perhaps encourage a light hearted and watchable recap of the season.

The managers favourite goals, games or even singalongs.

Anything,in fact, that would make viewers want to watch it.

Instead, the atmosphere in the room resembled a wake before everyone is drunk, and McCann , along with his half witted pal Tanner, not only seemed to mourn the title win, but actually shifted the conversation to how limited Celtic are, and asked Rodgers about perceived weaknesses in the side.

John Collins, to whom the question was attributed, looked bemused, and tried his best to think of a way to excuse himself.

By the way, NOTLR on twitter has spotted that if you turn Neil McCann’s head upside down, he looks like someone off the telly..

Ach, maybe thats a bit harsh, he did have quite a rough start to life…

However, the professionalism of rodgers showed through, and despite McCanns pleas for an English side to come and take him and some of his players down south, the manager reassured us he was quite happy with his lot…

From Squawka, who don’t have Neil McCann asking the questions..

“Not really, no, and I’m not trying to downplay it,” Rodgers said, as reported by BBC Sport, when asked if the title win was his biggest achievement.

“My biggest feeling is how I can influence players, so when I see Stuart Armstrong play like he did, that’s my big achievement. When I see Kieran Tierney, Scott Sinclair, Scotty Brown develop, these are my big achievements.

“For any people thinking it’s easy, look at Aberdeen the other night [Friday’s 7-0 win at Dundee], and how well they played. A really good team, an excellent manager, and they go away and get a victory at a hard place to go.

“It’s just been the level of our consistency – the players are getting the rewards for how they work on a daily basis. It wasn’t easy, every game is tough.”

There must be something in the air-another Glasgow club achieved something special at the weekend..

If Sky decided to play the occasion down, one of the Celtic players decided not to..

I genuinely hope the players go tonto at full time at start celebrating, ripping the posts down etc, take the fine Celtic

tut tut.

That would be irresponsible and disrespectful…

Final word on winning titles has to go to a former player, John Fallon, who posted on twitter…

Yes 1 as player is gr8t, but to stand with these gr8t fans and feel there passion and love of this gr8t club has no bounds

Looks like the Lennon CSC might have a new member  -meeting tonight, by the way, Catholic club , Newcastle , free beer and fags subject to availability,…

” I have never hidden my desire to move to England. I love the league, the culture and the environment but for now am focused on helping Hibernian gain promotion to the Scottish top flight”,  Efe Ambrose told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” As for the question you asked me about Stoke City’s interest, all I can say is that am open to offers and I have received some. Soon I will decide, summer is close you know”

For all the negativity surrounding the sixth win, and I lost count of the amount of times “we can only beat whats in front of us ” , at any level, six titles on the trot is a tremendous achievement, and to secure this one without losing a game is incredible.

There’s a cup still to be won, which would round off the season nicely, and then there’s the second Brendan season to look forward to, a season that promises even more than this one has delivered.

Enjoy it, enjoy every minute of it, and smile pleasantly at those who play it down.

Pat them on the shoulder and tell them they are right.

It doesn’t mean a thing, and watch their reaction.

And then you’ll see exactly what it means.

The Diary has been absent since Friday, largely due to work and other commitments, so we go back to Thursday, first of all, to settle this…

There are loads of appropriate songs they could adopt, such as:

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY – ABBA
WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN – THE JAM
THE MONSTER MASH – BOBBY ‘BORIS’ PICKETT
WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER – QUEEN
NEW LIFE – DEPECHE MODE
TAXMAN – THE BEATLES

TRAGEDY – THE BEE GEES

GUILTY – BARBARA STREISAND

Today, put some words in the great mans mouth..

Scott Sinclair back on form yesterday, wonderful to see, joy to watch.
The management team and players have done fantastically well this season, a team to once again be proud of.
Hopefully one more piece of silverware will be won in this remarkable season.
6 titles in a row is a strong position to be in going forward, a few signings of the calibre of Sinclair and Dembele is required, you must always add quality on the back of success.

Great days at Cetic just now, long may that be the case.

Monti,

Spot on,Scott Sinclair hit the high spots again,a pleasure to watch. Great link-up with Paddy for the first two.

Our third and fourth we’re pretty damn fine too,btw

Having said that,Scott started like he has played recently,a wee bit short of where he had been. Like most of our team in the first half

I thought Hearts stood up to us well in that time, could maybe count themselves a tad unfortunate at half time.

Maybe I’m being magnanimous in victory, mind!

Second half,naw. Totally destroyed them.

I think Hearts have got a real problem with their new manager-whom I like, btw. He’s not the Jeffries/Calderwood type which is a plus in my book.

But…

Either the players hate him more than they love their win bonuses,or he’s asking his players to do things they can’t.

Or both.

If he is to succeed-and I’d rather they took fourth place behind us,Aberdeen and St Johnstone than yon deid mob-he has to get them performing for him.

Monti

D’Fhinnein Mick,
Agreed.
I think Cathro may be a good assistant or first team coach in the background but i doubt him as a manager.
Can’t help with Craig Levein watching on like the grim reaper.
I think Cathro will be away soon.

Got a favour to ask of you well-travelled types. My mate has booked a wee romantic break in Krakow for his wife’s birthday.

You guessed it,hun game weekend.

Anyone know of a pub there he can be sure to see it in?

I’m usually pretty good on this but Krakow has me stumped. Visit the salt caves and get blootered is the only advice I could give him!

I’d greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.

Hi Mick, just got back from Kracow on Saturday! The Bull pub just off the main square will show it. With St. Mary’s Basillica on your right, it’s about 50yards down the road on the left hand side – it’s a British bar and has Sky Sports on all the time. The Guinness isn’t bad either! It’s not to be confused with the John Bull pub which is about 20 yards away. http://www.cracowonline.com/56-Bull_Pub-Pub

I agree with Montioni Sinclair was back to his best, he meant what he said in Morrisons. Semi Final Hatrick on the cards. I think the team had a bit more flair and directness without Mousa, don’t get me wrong he has been fantastic for us btw. I also think Roberts could play the Pirlo role rather than being out on the wing he was very effective through the middle.I named one of my rabbits after Sinclair I asked him how many he would get before the game, he stomped his foot 3 times crazy are what lol, I will do it again before the Semi and post it before the game, in Scotty we trust. Two legs out of the three completed with style and panache. The third is not going to be so easy. The powers that be and the men in black will do all they can to prevent us from doing the treble. The Hampden pitch will have suffered a season’s use and will be recovering from the other semi the day before. The officials will have plotted and rehearsed their game plan and have an assortment of ad hoc decisions they can use in the event of unforeseen circumstances. To use an old boxing saying, when British boxers used to fight in the U.S. “We’ll have to knock them out to get a draw”. I hope and pray that Brendan has us primed and ready for the fray.

Hi Ralph,

I guess even I should raise my head above the parapet today. Yesterday was quite a day. Celtic always do the important things in style and Saturday was no different. I have lost count of the title wins that have either been cliff hangers (the 4-2 evening is branded even on my foggy memory) or slaughters. Hearts were challenging in the first half though on occasion “challenging” was a dicey definition. It really is time for some serious reaction from the powers that be or the club – I do not favour counter attacks, especially given our “favoured” relationship with referees and authorities. Opposition tactics have reached brutal proportions and need to be contained before someone is seriously injured.

Anyway, congratulations to everyone. I would say the fans were the best but that huddle after the last goal was just something.

I nearly missed it all. I was at a wedding on Saturday down in the dreek shires of York (synonym for “middle of nowhere”) and only a bomb threat to the family hostel and some Jackie Stewart driving from yours truly got us away in time to be back at the ranch for kick off. I manged to get back in time and once the old laptop was up and running, I settled down for a good listen to CTV – my favourite channel, hmm, hmm, hmmm! As I became more and more immersed in the build-up, I decided to check if my dodgy recordings were successfully downloaded while I was away. Low and behold, I discovered the game was on some weird Sky channel (I had always refused to subscribe to its football farce but the wife would not give up her nature programmes – well, that’s what she calls them – and that despite me offering her “Freeview” any night she wants but she maintains there is something seriously wrong with my plug in and my programmes are far too short. I think she would prefer watching Una’s rabbits). Never mind, God is good and by full time He was very good. As for the wedding, I thought my wife’s nephew was marrying Liz Taylor he has been down the aisle that many times. Ach! good luck to her, eh, him and all the next lot too. I just hope they miss me off the guest list – again!!!

However, today is mine for rejoicing and several replays – I suppose there might have been one or two feeling that way on Saturday too! It has been an exceptional season one that Brendan can claim as uniquely his own, one in which the players made a name for themselves in our history and one when the fans showed a unity that has been missing for some time – we just need to learn to keep together even during the tough times.

It is also nice to see mike back. I was a wee bit concerned he had been rammed up the rear in some God forsaken Fife field. Hope you are well – and the lambs too!

If we lose the semi by blatant cheating,I won’t blame the officials.

Well, not much anyway-they are what they are.

Thing is,we know what they are. And they still get away with it.

ICT two years ago, betcha the linesmen-and probably the official observer!-almost certainly asked McLean how he would get away with that.

“Just watch me” was his reply.

This cheating can be stopped. Very easily.

Celtic has a long history of standing up to injustice. It’s time this current board did the same.

Good afternoon feeling champion today.
Graffiti on the vans for all my Chelsea, Arsenal, and Brighton work mates to see.
6 in a row a treble to play for, life just doesn’t get any better.
Sinclair for me has been the most important signing. Dembele is top quality, but Sinclair is just different Class.
I’ve had many arguments this morning with clowns who know nothing of what it takes for a Celtic side to win in Scotland, the agenda against us is deeply woven into the fabric of our society.
It is not by accident that we haven’t won as many trebles,it is simply called cheating.
So let’s continue to support the bhoys all the way to the finish line, they deserve it.
The best 11 in the hoops this season for me in no particular formation,
Gordon
Lustig Jozo Boyata Tierney
Forrest Armstrong Brown Roberts
Dembele Sinclair
.I added in Boyata due to the important goals he scored in the games where we struggled a little, they were very important to keep the run going.
Subs McGregor Griff Eric Bitton Henderson Izzy
Gordon Tierney Forrest Armstrong Brown Griff, 6 Scots, add in McGregor Henderson, then Scotland too should be thankful that Brendan has brought those guys on so much, giving them a new lease of life to show us what they were really made off.
Arnstrong has excelled,we all knew he was a player, but it took him time to realise he was a Celtic player. Now he knows, and will only get better..

A little more investment and this team can take us out of the champions league group stages.
Gordon
Lustig Boyata Jozo Tierney
Brown Armstrong
Forrest Rogic Sinclair
Dembele.
This is based on Roberts not being there, I hope we can get paddy signed his vision for a pass is crucial in big games, and he can also finish. If he is still there I would gave him as a free role behind the striker. I thought he was immense on Sunday.
A strong Centre back, a back up keeper a centre mid and another striker.
We need to find guys of premiership quality. The difference players like paddy Sinclair and Dembele have brought, shows what you can get if you get genuine top talent. This would make the difference between champions league or Europa league.

“Rodgers won’t be away anyetime soon,” Stewart.
“He is really enjoying it “Thompson on Rodgers.
We have enough enemies without bringing more in.

A lot has been said about the excellent performance against Hearts, but I would just like to mention the performance put in by McGregor. He played all over the park…centre, in the hole, on the wing, and in defence. I was praying he would get a goal as a reward for his labour. Well done Callum.
Another who was hardly in the game until he was….was Roberts! He hardly touched the ball until he laid on the first goal, and then the second. It is that type of play…that type of vision that we have lacked. Goodness knows what we shall do if he leaves.

A serious question. Do you think Roberts would be better utilised in a feeder position similar to yesterday’s rather than on the wing or for goal scoring? It would be hoped that would be part of such a role, of course.

Pensioner,

I don’t know if you remember Jonny Giles who played for M. United? He started as a winger but became a playmaker when he moved inside later in his career. I see Roberts having a similar career.

I hope that we keep him. He will not make it at City, and he will not experiences the highs that he could get at Celtic.

Rebus67,

Johnny Giles played for Leeds UTD.
He was in the team we beat in the European cup semi final in 1970.

You are right as always Tex, back oot from behind the sofa, the stats correction bhoy.

Rebus, I believe that you are correct about Paddy and I believe he will stay, Brendan wants him and in that playmaker role, he would be a great full time signing and we have the lolly, so why not?

Tex,

I believe that Giles played for both Manchester and Leeds. You are probably correct, tho, that he became a play maker when he joined Leeds.
I saw the home game against Leeds, who were a very good team. However, Celtic were better, having more of a cutting edge.

I hope that Roberts stays but I have heard that he wants to play in the EPL. I suspect that BR has a signing in mind for the play maker role, but I have no idea who. I believe that significant money will be paid for this position.

My father and I laid plans to go but the transport we arranged fell through and then I could not get the time off work that fitted with the new arrangements. We both made arrangements fr the following season full of confidence but we lost to an up and coming Ajax in the quarter finals. We were still good enough to win but the Lions were disintegrating by then. After that I had a young kid and, in spite of slagging her off on occasion on here, I could not leave the missus to do it all on her own. So, never actually got to a final anywhere. Now I am too skint to get to Parkhead even.

I remember Giles very well (almost as well as the cartoonist :)). He was a wee workhorse and the engine room of that team. Fiery in nature, he fitted in like the proverbial brick into that team of unqualified butchers – possibly a bit unfair when you think of Gray, Lorimer, Jones etc. all fair Englishmen and true, of course. Except for Terry Cooper, the JJ victim, the defence and much of the midfield were little short of thugs. I will never forget that night at Hampden when we made a well-known English sports writer called Harkness eat his bowler hat. He said he would if we could pull off the impossible and beat the best team in Europe and, fair dos, he did. He ate the biggest piece of humble pie I have ever seen in a sports report. I was fortunate too to witness in person the famous 1-0 victory at the cowshed called Elland Road and the coming of age of a unique but sadly short lived, football talent, George Connelly. It was the best journey I ever made from England to Scotland.

Pensioner,

I remember Connely. He had it all…superb skill on the ball, and a physical presence.

I first saw him when he came on at the halftime show and played keepie up as he walked round the ground. Great skill. I hope that he has found happiness now in later life.
