Celtic Diary Monday March 20: Three Points To Go.

Thats what we wanted yesterday, and thats what it leaves us needing to clinch six in a row.

There’s a certain anxiety about the team as the club approaches the winning post for the league title. The return of the side to side and back again style may be down to facing packed defences who think they know how to get a result, but it could also be down to a desire to just get the bloody thing out of the way.

No one wants to make a mistake that could cost the unbeaten run, and it could also be said that no one fancies getting their legs broken before the medals are handed out.

Arguably Celtic’s most difficult opponent this season, Dundee escaped with another single goal defeat which showed other sides that with tenacious defending and the odd hopeful surge upfield, then at least you won;t be embarrassed, and with some Celtic players looking a little lethargic, it almost worked for them.

The most notable performance of the game came from former Celt Darren O’Dea, who put in yet another credible audition for the vacant role of expendable hatchetman at Celtic Park, although at least this time he didn’t put anyone out of the game, despite a valiant effort at Scott Sinclair, who must be getting fed up of being kicked up and down the park on a weekly basis. Notably though, O’Dea didn’t indulge in theatrics when Moussa Dembele mistimed a kick…

Although cameras caught Scott Brown telling a Dundee player that he would “do him “, one feels that its about time someone did somebody regardless of the consequences.

An expendable defender such as O’Dea would at least signal the intent that the team are going to hit back.

Until such a player is signed, there is little point in playing any of the youngsters that are banging on the dressing room door. It’s simply not worth the risk.

Unless one of them is a noted sociopath with an inexplicable hatred of anyone wearing a different coloured shirt than him.

As for O’Dea…we could do a lot worse.

The manager was happy enough, but you sense he, too, will heave a big sigh of relief when the league is finally won..

“It was a very good victory for us and I thought in parts of the game we were excellent. We started a little bit slow and I thought we started to find our rhythm later in the first-half. Opportunities were coming higher up the field and we got a goal we deserved.

“I thought we started the second-half really well. We had good composure and looked threatening. We got a wonderful second goal from great build-up play. It was a perfect example of a goalkeeper having the ability to use his feet. It was super. It started with Craig and you could see his joy when we scored.”

He might as well have said..

Well, at least there was hardly any traffic on the way home.

Supporters perhaps need to be a wee bit more patient with the side, and certain players, who do not deserve some of the grief they’ve been getting from the stands and on social media.

Get a grip.

We’re three points away from the title and its still March.

We’ve not lost a game and in doing so have scored one hundred league goals.

Image result for there's no pleasing some people

There is a real possibility that the anxiety in the stands is crossing the line onto the pitch.

Lighten up. There really isn;t anything to be worried about.

It’s going to be a lot of fun in the next six weeks or so. Sit down, grab a beer and enjoy it.

As Rogers says…

“I always said when I arrived at the club we weren’t defending a title but looking to win it. The ideal scenario is you win it yourself, but I’ll take Dundee winning on the Friday night.

“We never expected the chance to win it as early as this. We’ve done our best in every single game and an immense amount of credit must be given to the players.

“They have shown focus and mentality to see through games, such as this one against Dundee, and win. We have never taken it for granted or shown compacency. We have to win it and earn it.

Start the praise now, and you may see the players start to relax a bit.

The result , combined with other results over the weekend, means that Celtic can actually win the title without kicking a ball , as the manager pointed out above, if Dundee beat Aberdeen on the Friday night before Celts visit Tynecastle on April 2.

The delay is down to the upcoming international break, where sevral Celts have an opportunity to get injured, so here’s hoping they all get a wee niggle and decide not to risk the games against Canada and whoever else it is.

Tickets for the Canada friendly, at Easter Road, are selling poorly, with forecasts of around 5000 turning up.

The SFA clearly didn;t think this through, as there are no home based Scots outwith Celtic featured, and a little bit of foresight here could have swelled the crowd simply by adding Hearts and Aberdeen players to the squad.

Even adding wonderkid Barrie Mackay would have fleeced a few more quid out of the gullibillies, but presumably the beaks figured that the “rangers ” fans money is needed for season books to keep the lights on.

But then, when did the SFA ever show competence in anything they ever did ?

Speaking of season books…

There’s a waiting list ?

Like the one last time ?

Image result for ticket queue

Anyone who signs up to this, let me know what happens.

I could do with a laugh.

Still no reply from Neil Doncaster, so we can safely assume that he is not in a position to deny collusion during the dark times when our game was abused by either corrupt officials.

Actually, it might be an idea if you emailed him as well, and asked him to deny collusion , just to help clear up any tittle tattle that might be doing the rounds.

Especially as its nearly that time for the SFA to declare that no one is in breach of UEFA Financial Fair play rules.

Speaking of financial matters, isn;t it time the SFA had a look into the affairs of the man they decided was misunderstood and actuallly a fit and proper person to head up the revivial of the Rangers franchise ?

Dave King was last week told to stop his shennanigans by the Takeover Panel as they were onto his flagrant breaches of share ownership rules, and then news came from South Africa that another of his companies was being a little fast and loose with rules over there.

Which led to another fine.

Will the SFA move to protect this version of the club from yet another dodgy businessman ?

I’m sure the press will be all over it.

Especially now the club is ready to take its rightful place at the top table of European football, after the considerable improvements shown on the field at the weekend..

Every time they change their manager…..

Do they ever learn ?

On a serious note, I need you all to be careful out there.

Keep your eyes peeled, and if you do see this, er, man, make sure you contact a constable.

Under no circumstances should he be approached as those meaty fists wafting by you could cause a terrible chill.

Still, after the police find this man and make the streets safer for the rest of us, there’s a lawyer who will no doubt be glad of the work…

From the Sun, with apologies to all for quoting that rag..

THE barrister defending Rangers’ EBT scheme went bankrupt over tax debts days before the club’s case was called.

Andrew Thornhill QC was declared bust after a petition by HMRC.

The following week the former Gers tax lawyer, 73, appeared at the Supreme Court over the Ibrox oldco’s use of employee benefit trusts.

A source said yesterday: “It is quite ironic that the man seen as being behind the whole EBT scheme has been made bankrupt by HMRC.

“He will have been allowed to carry on working, provided he notifies the Bar Standards Board. But this news will surprise Rangers fans and raise a lot of questions.”

Thornhill successfully represented the oldco club in their 2012 £75million battle with the taxman.

A hearing ruled they owed less than the amount originally demanded, but that decision was overturned at the Court of Session in 2015.

Liquidators BDO — represented by Mr Thornhill — are challenging the decision.

The case called at the Supreme Court in London last week and five judges are considering the verdict.

If the decision is upheld, the bust Ibrox firm could owe up to £95million.

The bankruptcy order against Mr Thornhill was made on March 8.

The Bar Standards Board said: “It is not a bar to practising.”

Belfast Celtic:
Our bothers across the sea, may i ask a question or two?
Belfast Celtic was a succesful club in Ireland with a strong Nationalist support, it disappoints me that the club never reformed.
The Bobby Jones incident (having his leg broken by Linfield fans) was obviously a deciding factor in shutting shop.
This club MUST be reformed to once again participate in the Irish league.
Maybe our regulars from Belfast can tell me if there are any plans for Belfast Celtic to reform?

Come on Bhoys in Belfast, make this happen, get fucking motivated and organise this.

Charlie,
That was a heart warming documentary, thanks for puting that up.
Belfast Celtic’s founding and story is very close to our Celtic story, in that the clubs were formed to give people with nothing, something….hope!
I remember reading a book about Belfast Celtic when i was at High School. ( i was usually ordered out the class for being a cheeky cunt), you would see me standing out in the hall on a daily basis lol.
Anyway, the story of this club Belfast Celtic has remained in my heart, i truly hope the club will be back again, maybe the Belfast Bhoys could get their fingrs out and make it happen?
It should happen, it can happen but the people have to want it to happen!

” For we only know that there’s going to be a show and the Belfast Celtic will be there”!

Monti I too read the story of Belfast Celtic but it was my Uncle Eamon who told me of the great players and stories of the Celtic.
He said it’s a grand auld team was sung by Belfast Celtic first, and then of course recorded by Glen Daly.
When you sing the words then I have a feeling he was right,
Don’t know if anyone knows for sure who sung it first?
Of course Charlie Tully was the darling and my Uncle Eamon just adored him. Nobody could touch Charlie from his point of view.
I wonder if we read the same book mines was 1989 Belfast Celtic by John Kennedy,it had a green front cover with the team pictured ? I think there has been a few written, but this was the one my uncle gave to me.
Typical I loaned it out and it never returned,as it did the rounds.

Mike I just was catching up with your comments about the mental tiredness of the players,I think you make a fair point m8.
It looks to me they are so focused on not losing, they are not enjoying their football as much as they should be. I would like to see us just go back to being ourselfs for at the moment we just don’t want to lose, instead of wanting to win.
Maybe the international break has came at a good time to let the players get away from the pressure a little and hopefully recharge and be ready for the run in now which should see us champions at swinecastle. Now that would be lovely.

Jimmy we forget the stresses and strains that the players go through an awful lot of pressure, sometimes self inflicted.
We all wish that we had the talent to play for the Tic. our dream, but sometimes, sometimes we forget about the mental pressures as well as the physical pressures.
Its also easy to forget that they are young men, sometimes from different countries, diets and different temperatures.
They have been amazing, surely we can forgive a slight drop in tempo and drop in standards in this most exhausting season.

I only listened to the game yesterday, having cancelled my Sky Sports and not figured out this new fangled Kodi business yet.

What was clear was how much they want to see some one, anyone, defeat us, and with the tacit agreement it seems of the SFA referees are allowed to “balance” games by referring us differently to our opponents

Anyway, so far its not worked and I m hopeful we can get the league won soon, rest a bit, go again for the cup semi final and mix and match teams to keep players fresh and injury free

Talking about Sky, I think they must be losing a lot of subscribers, they are calling me quite often now trying to get me to come back. Good, I hope the EPL and its crazy money has a big pin pricked in it soon and football can get back to some thing more like a game for the people.

Out at the shops yesterday, and the guy at the till asked if I wanted a free paper. “oh, what paper?” I asked, never shy of some free stuff “The Sun” “No, not the Sun, even if its free”

Charles thanks for the documentary on Belfast Celtic, I haven’t seen that. Our school sports was held at Celtic Park, Belfast
every year, the pitch was kept immaculate ready for the day Celtic would play again. It was owned, I think, by the MacAlinden family. The effect of the”Troubles” and regeneration led to the ground being sold for housing and Celtic could never return to their spiritual home. By the way Monti it was Jimmy Jones who was thrown over the wall by the Bluemen, I think they hated him because he want a catholic but played for Celtic.
There is a history of Belfast Celtic reprinted and probably on Amazon or EBay. I later played in a team with quite a few Bluemen in it, most were all right not letting religion divide our love of football. Lin ield had a much better record for playing Catholics than their Glasgow cousins.

There is no doubt that the team has improved in leaps and bounds from last year. However, where do we go from here to improve it?
BR will probably continue with 4231 so which elements could be improved? The answer is probably in the “2”. Brown, Bitton and McGregor have played there. Eboue also has appeared. In all likelihood Brown will continue in his role so what do we need as a partner?
Unfortunately, what we need is expensive to buy…..someone who can both defend and be creative. Someone like Bailly of Spurs. To get quality there will be expensive and means thaat we shall have to move on the likes of Bitton, McGregor and possibly Henderson. I had hoped that the latter would get a chnce in this role but appatently it is not going to happen.
The front three of Forrest, Armstrong and Sinc will not change. Let’s hope Dembele stays one more season. Amazingly, Boyata seems to be emerging as our #1 nd the other two are inconsistent. Perhaps we shall bring in A balll playing CB if we get rid of Eric or Jozo.
I fear that Grif’s days are numbered….how does he fit?
The alternative is that BR works his magic on an existing player for the midfield role….maybe that is to be Eboue.

Whatever happens, it will be interesting!

Boyata will be for the off, we also have Rogic, who will be back shortly, we are also very interested in another Australian young player, who from the little I have seen will fit like a glove into our squad.
Bear in mind Rebus that Brendan has not spent very much money, I think that the chequebook might come out in the summer.
A new centre back and a creative midfielder might come in then.

Rebus, I personally think a central back 3 would suit our style better.
Lustig Eric and Jozo being the preferred option.
Gamboa at rwb and Tierney at left wing back would provide the drive.
Forrest Armstrong Sinclair as the forward players with Broony protecting the centre backs. Dembele up top.
We keep looking for a central midfielder, who isn’t there to do the job at the moment and hasn’t been since Wanyama left,, but have the players to change the system.
Ajer to return next season from his loan spell, how’s he being doing lately,he also might be the option if he progresses as hoped.

The Peepul at the SFA and SPFL continue to ride rough shod over the Governance of our wonderful game.

Statement by President Michael D. Higgins on the death of Martin McGuinness
“It was with great sadness that I have heard of the passing of Martin McGuinness, and on behalf of Sabina and myself, may I express our deepest sympathy to his wife Bernadette and to his family.

The world of politics and the people across this island will miss the leadership he gave, shown most clearly during the difficult times of the peace process, and his commitment to the values of genuine democracy that he demonstrated in the development of the institutions in Northern Ireland.

As President of Ireland, I wish to pay tribute to his immense contribution to the advancement of peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland – a contribution which has rightly been recognised across all shades of opinion.

As a political colleague of many years, and having participated together in the Presidential election campaign of 2011 that brought us all over Ireland, Sabina and I have appreciated both Martin McGuinness’ warmth and his unfailing courtesy.

Our paths have crossed many times in recent years at official events, including most recently at the GPO for the 1916 commemorations, as well as in our celebrations of ‘the beautiful game’, at Glentoran and in France at the European Championships.

In addition to his services in public life, as an inclusive believer in community in all its forms he will also be remembered for his warm support for Derry GAA and Derry FC.

His death leaves a gap that will be difficult to fill. May he rest in peace.”
