A sore yin

Gordon
Great save from Waghorn in first half and a decent performance. Distribution was fine and from my seat couldn’t be faulted for the equaliser.

Tierney
Stuck to his defensive tasks where needed and the fact that KT was our main attacking threat in the second half tells its own story about the Celtic forwards performances.

Lustig
Enjoyed his game of Chuckle Brothers “To You, To Me, To You” Football with Boyata and Erik in first half but no real complaints on this showing. Got booked for daring to point out to Bobby Madden that attempting to half Paddy Roberts legs may be deemed a bookable offence.

Erik
Good showing I thought at the heart of the defence, had a good battle with the “robust and eager” Waghorn.

Boyata
The pendulum in the passing between defenders game in first half but then had a howler allowing Waghorn to charge in on Gordon. Think he got a little bit rabbit in headlights after that so still some work to do there.

Broony
Industrious yes but never grabbed the game by the neck and no driving forward from our Captain. In fact the longer the game went on, the further back he fell.

Armstrong
Like rest of Celtic midfield, was struggling to get involved and then suddenly scored with a lovely shot from edge of the box. Sadly then got a strain in second half and had to go off.

Bitton
Probably touched the ball the most for our midfielders in the first half but sadly it was all side to side and back to defenders. Took a few clatters though and may be sore today despite being subbed at half time.

Forrest
Had a few good drives in first half and did well defensively to close down space so much that Barrie Mackay was soon hooked by the opponents. May feel aggrieved to be subbed for Roberts just after a great run across the 18 yard line just as Celtic had ridden a period of pressure.

Sinclair
Missing all day long. Usually takes a good 30 mins to get into a game but this time it was 94 mins before he realised the game was on at 12:00. Very disappointing at one point to see a bemused SInclair and Dembele standing right next to each other as if they had just met that day.

Dembele
After the League cup win, Dembele famously went to Bella Napoli for dinner. This time it looks like he went before the game and was ready for a post pasta kip. He was slow to the point of lumbering and was even being beaten to the ball by Danny fucking Wilson. To be frank he looked fat and disinterested but the fashionistas tell me Hoops do nothing for a larger man. Did have one good shot that went across the goal just wide.

Subs

MacGregor
Showed a lot of energy after coming on for Bitton but after a fine start faded as he became swamped within a midfield of 2 against 4 for Rangers.

Roberts
On for Forrest and going forward had a couple of attempts at running towards goal but defensively did nothing to aid Lustig on right hand side. Another who had a few claims for being the victim of assault but waved away by Madden.

Griffiths
Brought on for Armstrong to form a 4-2-4 when Celtic were winning 1-0 and had Eboue on the bench. Didnt seem to know where he was playing and he Dembele and Sinclair and Roberts were never close to gelling until a final minute assault on goal saw an assault from hill on Griffiths that was deemed okay by the referee and linesman.

Manager
Made an arse of it in my humble opinion.

To be fair he had his hand forced at one point by the injury to Armstrong and the awful linesman and refereeing but did he need to take Bitton off ( I havent read anywhere that that move was forced on him) and then going for 4-2-4 when winning a game had classic Liverpool Brendan written all over it.

Will know this morning that he should have closed the game out with Eboue rather than that disjointed effort with next to no midfield.

Will need to lift his team and maybe look at some rotation in the league as a few Celtic players were struggling to get up to any sort of speed and form and many will be suffering from bruises and dead legs after this game.

After the game he said it should do us well for the Semi Final. As reality checks go, this should remind us all that we need to turn up and play to win games, do that and we dont need to worry about having to blame the pitch ( Hampden wont be any better after Aberdeen vs Hibs 24 hours before we play) or expect any sense of fair refereeing.

I’m chucking it and going to live on a boat. As should the manager the players and the coaching staff. We should hire the lassies caught on video abusing Hill. At least she cares.

Cheat…nuff said!

As for the team Lacklustre…Manager, made the right move to take Bitton off to give some forward momentum with McGregor, but arsed it up by not putting on Eboue for Armstrong..could have hooked Sinclair for Griffiths…

Semi final Result 3-0…he wont make same mistake twice!

In Association fitba. the referee is the person responsible for enforcing the laws of the game during the course of the match.
He didny,
Rankers and there inferior players wanted the result more than we did. Our big game players never turned up, the team looked tired, the result of a long, long season, we have probably played double the amount of games that they have.
Better to get this DRAW and poor performance oot the way and focus on the remaining games and rest some senior players.

First off, Celtic were pretty poor. Probably our worst domestic performance of the season.

Even with that, on a level playing field we would have won the match at an absolute canter.

1. Miller deserved a red for his lunge at Armstrong, regardless of contact or lack of.
2. Hill should not have been on the park to score, or indeed foul Griffiths for the non-penalty.
3. Holt should have been off for his assault on Paddy.

If the ref isn’t a cheating bastard and judges just one of those correctly, we win by a few goals.

This crap of needing to be able to win regardless of the ref needs called out for what it is, which is justifying cheating by those bastards and suggesting we are paranoid.

Will the club do or say anything about it? Think we all know the answer to that.

Brendan got it wrong you are Absoloutley correct.
Bitton had to try and keep the ball as nothing was happening in front of him, sadly Celtic fans were impatient and wanted the ball played forward even if it meant giving away possession when will they learn. I felt sorry for him as he became the victim this week.
I thought he was doing well, and was allowing Armstrong and Brown to try and take the game on.
But the Huns had flooded the midfield, and it was hard for our 3 in midfield to break through the 5 of theirs.
Think this was a huge mistake.
By taking Bitton off we lost the height at the back,to defend set pieces. McGregor never offered any better in my opinion.
Gamboa should have been the sub to go to a back 3 for Bitton if that’s why we wanted to go onto the front foot.
Gordon
Lustig Boyata Eric
Gamboa Rwb Tierney LWB
Brown Def midfielder
Forrest Armstrong Sinclair
Dembele.
Too me that would have allowed us to go toe to toe in the midfield, where we were outnumbered for most of the match.
When Armstrong got injured McGregor could have been better in that set up.
It was poor from Brendan, following on from last week against St Mirren.

That’s more or less the side I put up before the game.
No need for 4 at the back against a side playing 1 up much better to go with a 3 and push the WB’s up this way you can move it forward far quicker and not be outnumbered or caught on the break down the flanks.
I note Chelsea hae set up with a 3-4-3 tonight v United and have done so for most of the season.
I thought McGregor came on and did a decent job, made himself available at all times and looked to break forward whenever possible?
He has balls IMO and never hides even if he loses it he’s still making himself available even when surrounded..at his age that takes balls in a game this important.
Don’t agree with the OP on Lustig Bitton or Sviatchenko all 3 looked a bit caught up in the occasion were slack in possession and failed to look for a forward pass for the first half?
Bittons time may be up dallies too much far too casual times and his passing can be ropey not too mention being caught the wrong side of the ball when teams counter fairly regularly.
He’s failed to progress as much as hoped I think and Eboue could well be his final nail when he settles?
Boyata has had 1 rick since his reinstatement in the team in that time Sviatchenko has had a few near misses himself..nothing said of course Boyata being the new whipping bhoy in Efes absence.
My opinion is we have been below par for the past few games getting by with the extra quality and maintaining our run fact is St.Mirren made uslook average for a complete half and yesterday so did a rejuvenated pretendy Rangers side.
The atmosphere at CP can do that to some players and it seemed that way yesterday they were up for it 4/5 of ours clearly weren’t.
I agree on Brendans set up yesteday I felt he left us undermanned in MF and could easily have rectified that by bringing on Gamboa and reverting to the set up mentioned above?
He’s deployed 3-4-3 3-5-2 many times as a Manager for the life of me I can’t understand why not against a very average side?

jrw,
We need to get out of this ‘ the ref is incompetent ‘ mentality.
What Madden did was entirely fucking deliberate, he is a cheating Hun bastard, it’s how it is!
So from his backward by birth mentality, he is wholly competent.
I hope his next 50 shites are hedgehogs!

The North Stand side linesman (I don’t like the term assistant referee) made three ‘honest mistakes’ in quick succession at the start of the game. At that point I knew that unless we were playing well it would be a long afternoon and so it proved. Perhaps best to have had this wake-up call now and not in the semi-final.

They very probably will be – but we need to make sure that any of their ‘honest mistakes’ simply don’t matter by scoring a bucket full.

This result has been coming for weeks. Celts have been below par and guys like Sinclair and Sviatchenko have been completely off the boil. Not helped by Boyata still being prone to a loss of concentration and poor passing. Actually poor passing throughout the team.

Turning point though was losing Armstrong and then a couple of dodgy, read surprisingly poor, substitutions by BR.

Of course the mason in black’s failure to take action against KM for his two footed lunge in the 1st half, his ignoring Holt’s assault on PR in the second, which left PR leary about getting involved in anything approaching a 50 / 50, plus the ”penalty? what penalty?, incident late on all helped make them look good and us feel bad.

Yep a sore one all right and another to look forward to in the semis. If anyone thinks we’ll get a fair crack of the whip from the next mason they need to go and live on a boat ……

Doc

Totally gutted at the game, hard to disagree with the ratings although I heard Biton took a knock. The most disappointing aspect was the lack of fight in the team, players moaning at the ref when they should have been getting even.

Lets hope other teams don’t view this as a tutorial, just injure a Celtic player and the rest will roll over. We could be in for a long season if that’s the case.

We have been playing some wonderful stuff recently so yesterday was a huge let down. The surface was poor but we didn’t adapt to it. This is the first really poor domestic result since Brendan has been here so it will be interesting to see how he rectifies this.

I think the signing of Eboue was made for exactly this reason Doc?
I was praying he wasn’t going to be fielded yesterday (for fear of getting sent off)but he’s EXACTLY the help Brown needs in there against the kickball merchants in the SPFL?
He will put a dunt in when needs be.

Doc

I’ve seen little of Eboue but any player can stand up for his team-mates. Rodgers has a calm demeanour, in public, and maybe that’s rubbing off on the players but we need to defend our selves.

If Lennon was manager, how much of a ban would he be facing?

Joe.Mac

Have to disagree with big Eric, I thought he was very poor. I also think it’s maybe time to give Gamboa a run. How come we have seen hearts terrorise Clint Hill and he almost strolled through that game? We were poor, but have a look at the amount of times the ball went across the goal just looking for someone to poke it in ala Sinclair at Ibrox?

One or two you can just about take, but when mistakes hit double figures then there is a serious problem, for the next kick in the balls don’t be surprised if the corrupt sfa put him in the middle for the Scottish cup game,

Rangers adopted the correct strategy (flooding the mid-field) and Celtic had an off-day(I can’t explain off-days, can anyone? What is it biorhythms or what?). Armstrong going off didn’t help. Perhaps Sinclair and Dembele need a rest before the must win semi.

Guys
A lot of comments hit the nail on the head. Our team and manager had one of their poorest displays, and yes it’s been in the post with form for the last few games. Honest mistakes aside, Gordon made 3 superb saves and I am relieved that we were not comprehensively beaten. The truth is that we should have had the ability to trounce this pretends Rangers mob, and to have a guy in his 50’s beat Lustig to the ball to tap in an equaliser says much about our desire.
It may have come at the right time to focus them on the need to turn up togetherness in a game. Sinclair & Dembele have been off the last 3 games – they’re human, and in midfield generally our tactics had us beat and flattered the sevconians. They certainly had more hunger – that’s been too many times the case. In all honesty, that they didn’t leave with 3 points, leaves me feeling like we dodged a bullet.
