Celtic Diary February 15: Time For A Government Inquiry Into The SFA

The SFA are about to face increased business rates for Hampden Park, the white elephant built in the nineties so that they could have somewhere nice to work.

The press are reporting that it could mean Scotland will no longer use the ground , and quite possibly , the showpiece cup games will move away as well.

Of course, this is nonsense. The supporters will be asked to stump up the difference, in increased ticket costs, or perhaps even the clubs will be forced to contribute, which in turn, means the supporters will be asked to stump up the difference , in increased ticket prices etc..

Enough surely has to be enough.

The SFA, the SPFL and anyone else who has a hand in running the game are notoriously slow to allow the paying public any glimpse into their world.

In fact, they’d all rather we just ignored what they do and just turn up to watch the games, or pay the tv subscriptions.

There is no avenue for accountability. Its simply a case of the beaks telling us what will be, and the support doing as they are told.

As a public body, they should be open to scrutiny.

Not just over this, but over a number of other issues that have occurred over the years, for as with other organisations, especially public funded ones, there are certain safeguards in place to prevent abuse.

Not in football, however.

Recent allegations about events in 2012 when one of the games biggest clubs entered administration, and subsequently, liquidation have been ignored. Nothing has been learned, and no safeguards were put in place to prevent or help other clubs from going down this path.

Since then, the clubs have largely cleaned up their own operations, most operating within strict European financial rules.

The SFA and SPFL, however, have stayed silent on this issue. Then again, they stay silent on every issue which could potentially show them in a bad light.

In England, a parliamentary select committee asked questions about third party ownership of players, and other issues brought to light when Sam Allardyce spoke a little too freely on camera whilst enjoying a brief spell as England manager.

Allardyce was only telling the world what we already knew. The games rotten to the core. The money available down south is obscene, and when money is available, all sorts of unsavouries come charging to the door.

In Scotland, no one wants to delve into the way things are run. Despite having a few of our own unsavouries chancing their arm and running off with a few quid. When the new Rangers raised millions of pounds to kickstart their club, it all just disappeared.

And that, by the way, was fans money…

As the club is no longer on the stock market, no one is asking questions, and no rules can be enforced.

No one wants to look at how the SFA operates, no one questions the SPFL and even if they do, there are no answers forthcoming.

Our own media sort of accepts that, which is in itself shameful.

For instance, why were Gretna allowed to spend beyond their means before going under ?

Why were Rangers allowed to fold, owing millions ?

Why did the SPFL pay a broadcaster to show lower league Scottish football ?

What is the five Way Agreement ? Is it a reference to five different ways to fleece the support ?

Thats just the financial issues, there’s an even bigger one which needs to be investigated..

Why were children exposed to individuals with less than good intentions, putting their safety at risk ? Is it still a problem ? What has been, or is being, done to prevent a repetition ?

There are a multitude of questions, to which neither media or supporter can get an answer to.

Its time for Holyrood to open up a dialogue with those who run the country’s most popular sport. Whilst the money is not on a par with that available down south, its still quite significant.

down south, the police are investigating historic abuse.

It’s all rather quiet in the north.

A select committee to look into the affairs of those who run the game would be a start. They could explain, for instance, why the major sponsors are all bookmakers, yet participants are forbidden to use them. Are there safeguards to prevent abuse and match fixing ?

I mean real safeguards, with real punishments.

As we are often told when we face new powers of investigation, if we’ve nothing to hide, we’ve nothing to be afraid of.

This should apply to the SFA as well.

Unless, of course, they do have something to hide.

The child abuse allegations , if it had been in any other public sector, would have prompted calls for an inquiry.

The financial irregularities and claims of collusion would have prompted calls for an inquiry, again, though, not in football.

Its time for the government to accept there are problems, and time for them to prevent any further sidestepping of several major issues.

First Minister Sturgeon needs to forget about independence and Brexit just for a moment, and have a look at a couple of scandals that are a little closer to home. There’s a need for her to ask questions, if only becuase she’s got a better than average chance of getting an answer.

As the game down south becomes murkier, we need to be able to point to our own and say we’ve fixed it.

1 : You forgot the complete lack of Doping Tests in Scotland which was exposed this week. How many (drug) cheats are running around in Scottish Football.

2: There are a few Sports Cabinet Minister, Health & Sports Minster would suggest you try them rather than wee Nicola who is wondering why folk like Ruth and Kez go down to London to turn round and tell her to get on with the day job. (Only a sad fanny would use patter like get on with the day job).

I’m also sure James Dornan would be happy to make enquiries as the local MSP for Hampden area who is currently looking to push a Strict Liability Law through Holyrood.

3: Nae caption comp..someone needs to get back to the day job!

Would that be the same rat Dornan that accused celtic fans of provocation by wearing a free Palestine t-shirt..

He’s also a champion of the OBFA.. The rates have trebled and quadrupled for some business nationwide, it’s a scandal, it seems the worst performing economy in Europe will keep heading south with these halfwits in charge..

He is my MSP and always been good when needed for issues outside football, BUT on football matters:

Its exactly why I’m suggesting he would be a good point of contact.

Why is he pursuing such low lying fruit as Strict Liability for Clubs when scandal on doorstep only 200 yards from his official office etc

When Independence comes…there will be NO politicians in power. Which is the whole point of course.

For that is when we can ensure we get the Politicians we demand, not the policies we have pushed upon us by votes of a country where their MP’s outnumber ours by 10 to 1.

Fuck me, even Scottish Labour might get their act together…I know, I’ve went to far!

Excellent article..
My sad conclusion, however, is that nothing will be done.
A corrupt SFA is not a new thing…its been going on for more years than I care to remember…and it usually involves the Govan Club, and its Masonic influence.
There was a word commonly used about the Celtic support up until recent times..and the word was PARANOID.
Its not used now, however, thanks to lights being shone into dark corners by wonderful bloggers.
But it still doesn’t alter the fact that nothing changes.
People like Jock Stein,Hugh Adams,Turnbull Hutton, Craig Levein, and Fergus McCann all did their bit to expose the cheating and bias that engulfs our game..and what good has it done?
Currently we have blogs written by JohnJames, Phil Mac, The Clumpany,James Forrest,Joe McHugh and of course the wonderful ETims…which have been exposing and highlighting all that is wrong with the game in this country..and yet the Lying King is still in charge…Sevco are still here and Regan and Doncaster still draw a salary.
The saddest part for me is the lack of apparent “interest” from our Club on these matters…it is shameful that they remain silent on so many issues..But its nothing new.
Finally…Your suggestion that the top Politicians get involved to sort out the mess ?
Sorry Ralph..that ain’t gonny happen.
You’ve obviously forgotten this is Scotland.
A country where an elected MP can, publicly, call Celtic supporters C****and nothing happens to her.
That’s the Scotland I know.
Over to you Peter.

David Beckham it was well reported that he had his claim for a knighthood rejected because of a red flag for possible Tax Avoidance.
Craig Whyte won his case in court against the Tax man to have Duff and Phelps appointed to administer the liquidation of the old Rankers. Why would Craig Whyte do that unless he wanted a preferred bidder, Charles Green, to succeed with the purchase of the assets.
There was disbelief when all the assets were sold for a measly ยฃ5.5 million, Ibrox, Murray Park and the car park.
Murray Park alone was valued at ยฃ11 million and could have been sold separately to a developer.
No wonder then that the liquidators BDO are taking Duff and Phelps to court on behalf of the claimants for ยฃ28.9 million. Then of course the Taxman is taking out court proceedings forward to reclaim ยฃ24 million for the people.
These claims will be settled, possibly, this year.
David Cunningham King, due to his tax convictions in South Africa must have – whistles, flags and stamping flagged up on his dealings with Hector in Scotia. They, having been burned the last time must be watching closer than the Ghosts of Halloween.

The club and Rangers International are not public. Rangers delisted from the Exchange when Dave King took over.
They are traded privately rather than in the regulated market which would subject them to many constraints (NOMAD anyone!).
Such demands and codes of conduct of course would include a restriction on Friday night or evening press releases which strangely seem to be the forte of current club.
Its almost as if they want to hide bad news

The fact the SFA/SPFL/Police Scotland/MSP’s/MP’s have done nothing to ‘stifle’ the singing by the bigoted/racist/sectarian supporters of TRFC, tells everyone exactly which angle they all are approaching the game in “The Best Little Bigoted Country In The World”. The FACT all the ‘clubs’ have done nothing to bring an end to this ‘farrago’, tells everyone again that “The Blue Pound” comes before SPORTING INTEGRITY. HH

I might be wrong but the SFA isn’t a public sector organisation. It’s a private enterprise. They may receive some public funds, but those would be the only ones open for state scrutiny into what they are channeled into. Otherwise, they’re just like any other company.

Correct…it was set up by the Clubs themselves with no tie whatsoever to Government.

They might get grants here and there but not answerable in respect to their practises ( apart from public safety etc)

We should have only 1 governing body in Scottish football, the current crop of so called executives should be made to apply for the 1 position in the 1 governing body, interview panel made up of chairmans of clubs including junior clubs, that way it’s a fairer result for all, the big C in Scottish football is the lodge members at the top, time to push for change….

There will be no government investigation of the SFA and SPFL here unless Westminster asks for it. Our band of MSPs are mostly members of “ra peepul”. Too bigoted and scared to act againsts these bodies since the ghost of Rangers past will pop up and the dodgy dealings of sevco present. UEFA and FIFA are the best route here and if the Scottish government would work with them to clean up our governing body that would be great. Issue is both of those organizations are a bit like the SFA and SPFL. Opaque to the Core.

Cartvale88

Totally agree with every word written in today’s article, however the only way forward for Celtic is to get out of this corrupt organisation.
Henry McLeish ex First Minister of Scotland published a report into football in December 2010, this was the period that SDM and his acolytes ruled the roost.
McLeish stated
That there was a lack of transparency and accountability by the SFA, also that the SFA presented a serious obstacle to the modernisation of football in Scotland.
Six years later nothing has changed, yes we can blame the board, but the SFA and e media corrupted with their regard to RFC
In the period since the report was published consider the happenings, the demise of Rangers, all the baggage that has followed, even the actions of the wide boy to the magic hat last weekend.
If the happenings at the soothside were happening in the east end where do you think Celric would be?
In the last six years Lenny has been pilloried by the media, assaulted on a football field, the SFA could not care less. This is a body that clearly shows it bias towards Celtic.

Problem might be that when given the chance to head North, timid Scots chose to listen to the Darlings, Browns and Murphies who have gone to earth since Leave Vote.

The story of the frog in the saucepan on low heat is apt here.

Matters in terms of Government subservience to football governance are changing,FIFA corruption has seen to that. There are football lovers at Hollyrood who are fed up with the SFA and clubs.

UEFA will turn out to be as self interested and so corrupt as FIFA. One of the remarkable features of Res12 was Celtic’s reluctance to take matters to UEFA in spite of mounting evidence that there was a good case to do so.

The reasons can only be guessed at but there is a case that UEFA took the easy way out in 2011 to protect the SFA after RFC were eliminated rather than discover that UEFA had been lied to just when they had enhanced their FFP rules (which totally depend on trust and honesty) to prevent clubs with outstanding tax gaining a UEFA licence.

Celtic could have taken ownership of Res12 in 2014 but better late than never, although what they will do had best now wait for the justice system to finish its course in the summer in order to be sure of the ground.

That is when the case for reform will reach its height, but it will need external pressure to do so and that pressure needs to be built up now or the “nothing will change” school of thought will deliver that same self fulfilling prophecy.

This is not a political issue it’s about building leverage for change and SG involvement is only such a lever and need not be part of the mechanisms that replace what now passes for football governance.

I told a Man U.fan that we didn’t want Beckham because we had Nakamura. Who he? he said. He found out. Beckham was a slightly better than average midfielder (who won nothing as England’s captain) and a pretty decent but very thick Englishman who told us “we were better together” —together in what David? a Tory, xenophobic, crypto-fascist paradise run by media celebrities like you and that cunt Geldof? No Knighthood for Big Jock (he wouldn’t have accepted anyway) but one for cnut Beckham? The list of people who have refused honours is more impressive than list of those who have accepted.
Sir Mick Jagger but not Sir Keith or Sir John Lennon? Says it all.
Independence for Scotland, please, then we can sort our own shit out otherwise Beckham will do it for us!
