St Johnstone vs Celtic – Review of THAT GOAL!

Hooray for that 5-2, a winning scoreline that makes the result seem a lot easier than it was ( for at least 70 mins).

As Brendan said “You can only go so long playing without a striker” and thankfully Moussa ( French for Hat-trick – Ed!) stepped off the bench and slotted 3 goals home to ease any worries up against a well drilled St Johnstone side. All this talk of super Derek McInnes…surely Tommy Wright is the second best boss in Scotland?

Anyhows..I was thinking of writing a usual ratings piece but that all seems rather irrelevant given we just all witnessed one of the greatest Celtic goals of all time during this encounter.

You have probably watched it a thousand times too but just to clarify, this is how we scored yesterday:

THAT-GOAL

The Heat Map looked like this

ThatGoalHeatmap2

The movement of the ball was truly amazing. Every Player touched it, One-Two’s aplenty and it was a perfect combination of Team effort meets moments of individual brilliance.

It had our Right back doing THREE One-Twos in a ROW!

lusig-run

Our right back is then running hard to get into the left winger position  and then plays a perfect Rabona to our “industrious” centre midfielder who then played a beautiful backheel slip to our waiting Centre Forward who then slotted home. And the last 2 were both on as Substitutes no less!

Truly Glorious stuff. How lucky we are to be Tims in a time like this!

Hail Hail to a truly magnificent team goal. No sign of this slump ending. We welcome the slump

A Rabona and a back heel as well don’t forget.

Easily the goal of the season.

Did we actually keep possession after it was passed to Boyata?

Lustig had a poor game, I would have been happier with a more solid performance from him and then mibbee a Ribena.

Didn’t think I would ever see a goal to at least rival the wonder goal scored against St Mirren in 85/86 (canny remember-I was only a wee bhoy at the time) in the last-day league clincher when Hearts were shattered, but it has probably been surpassed with this piece of sheer beauty. If that was Barca then Sky would be showing it over and over ad hoc until Trump presses the red button, and not the one on his TV remote.

Frank that Love Street goal still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up ,it was McGrain to
McLEOD to
McGrain to
McStay to
Aitken to
McGrain to
McClair to
LE PETITE MERD.
Danny McGrain started the move just outside the Celtic box and ended up inside the St.Mirren box when the goal was scored, the greatest fullback Scotland has ever produced.

It was a masterpiece. A privilege to witness it.

Didn’t the finish nutmeg two defenders as well? I remember the Love Street goal as well Frank, McGrain and McStay just carving them up! Perhaps because that great goal was scored in such an important game it is stuff of legend and will never be surpassed.

Even the fact it was Judas that scored it can’t spoil it for me. My second favourite was Larsson escaping the clutches of Colin Hendry to scoop the ball over the head of the advancing hun keeper. Priceless!

Brilliant goal. Best Celtic goal I can remember for skill and teamwork. does anyone know what happened to Lustig in the last 20 mins or so – he played like a man possessed. Even after the game too!

I was in Seville and when Larsson scored his first we were in line with the goal line and it looked like it was going out then it curled in. A thing of beauty. He curled in a header!

Desi,

I could never detract from the shear brilliance of the goal. I believe all truly great goals involve multiple passes, the participation of several players and, as you most aptly said, ” moments of individual brilliance.” However, and I say this in the context of numerous and, at times worryingly increasing, missed chances, the move could just as easily have ended up like so many others with the ball being lost in a crowded penalty area. I hope I am being realistic rather than pessimistic and my justification is the amount of times good, promising opportunities are frittered away because we want to pass the ball right to the goal line. There seems to be a real reluctance to shoot for distance and yet Tom Rogic, Bitton, Griff and Dembele have all shown the ability to get goals from outside the box is there. So, whilst Sunday’s goal will always be up among the finest I have ever seen and will be to the forefront of my memories (not really a good endorsement for anything :)), I will also remember the anxious expectation the same scenario would be played out again.

Can I just say, the goal is worthy of a special article and you are right not to distract from its brilliance by simply including it in a match report.
St.Johnstone gave us another difficult game and I concur with your assessment of Mr. Wright. One can only hope his managerial intelligence will provide him with enough sound judgement to stay away from the south side of Glasgow unless S t. Johnstone have an obligatory away game. As for the game, I would go as far as to say, had our great “ally-on-the-day” Mr. Thompson of Specsavers fame not missed a very probable penalty and given us a blatant non-penalty – something I would not question on another occasion given how many he and his band of merry bigots owe us – we may have struggled to take more than 1 point, if any, away from Perth. However, we need such opposition to prove if we are good enough or as good as we think we are. We are also due some bad decisions for us, for a change. The one thing that confounds me about the team from Perth, among others, is how they can fail to demolish certain inferior teams. The points gap between us and them should be mirrored in the gap between them, Aberdeen and the also-rans. We may know the why but that does not ease the consternation.

Anyway, enough waffle. Thoroughly enjoyable read, Desi.
