Celtic Diary Thursday February 2: Twenty Five, Sixty Seven and Fifty.

The way things are going, that should be three of your numbers when you put the lottery on this weekend.

Matt McGlone, Alternative View editor explains…

A wee note about this evening. 25 points ahead=May 25th. Points total tonight 67. We’re 50 points clear of the bottom team. Lisboa 50yrs ago

The planets must be coming into some sort of alignment.

Any disappointment that Celtic failed to bring in new players to plan for the UCL qualifiers was swept away when arguably a weakened side overcame a stuffy Aberdeen 1-0 in Glasgow last night.

Dedryck Boyata ( did I get it right this time ? ) scored again. From a corner , again, and not only do we have a new and effective centre half to challenge those in place, we have suddenly found a new weapon at set pieces, something we haven’t had for a while.

We could call it a new signing.

For the big defender, who has undergone a remarkable transition and overcome his fear of round objects, it was a triumph, and just reward for the hard work and determination he has put in.

Brendan rodgers semed more pleased about that than the player. Which is probably the key .

“Outstanding again, and he deserves all the credit because it has been a difficult period for him since he first came in from Manchester City with expectations.

“But he has really worked hard over the last three months since he came back fit and he has just had to stay patient.

“A wonderful guy, he understands exactly what I am looking for from a centre-half: first and foremost to defend. He is aggressive, wins his duels in the air and he is comfortable on the ball. The message is just play simple.

“And then in the box he is a huge threat – he looks like he will score every time he is in the box. It was a good header and he defended well when he had to.

“He got good applause at the end from supporters and deservedly man of the match.”

The player let us in to his secret..

“I’ve been through some tough moments and coming back with an injury, and also missing the Euros,”

“Even back after the injury you have to get the fitness back. From there, the team is playing well and then you’re trying to get a place in the team.

“When I wasn’t playing, I was going back to the training ground after training and on my days off and was running on the treadmills until midnight, sometimes 1am. I’ve been working very hard and now it’s paying off.”

Look at this from early in his Celtic career…

Now look at him at full time last night…

Image result for dedryck boyata celtic

Image result for eye of the tiger rocky

Thats the difference.

Watching the game last night, there were a few other differences worth noting.

Overall, the aggression from players stood out. not the type of aggression that manifests itself in foul play, but a strong, imposing type.

Even Gary Mackay Steven looked like he had put on some power.

Nir Biton and Liam Henderson had that wee bit of steel that is needed at a higher level to close out opponents, and whilst they are by no means the finished article yet, as long as they are happy to play in that way, then their usefulness to the squad cannot be underestimated.

Aberdeen didn’t play at all badly last night, and with the sides level at half time, the now expected changes were more subtle than before. Biton and henderson by the end of the game were threading the ball through the Dons, Tierney was whipping it around and behind the back line, and when added to the usual speed and strength of Sinclair, Forrest and Roberts, then there are many, many more arrows in the quiver of this Celtic side than we may think.

Scott Sinclair, by the way, is going to be one of the Celtic greats. As long as he wants to be, that is.

He’s fast, skilful, got an eye for goal, and when he’s fouled, as he often is, he just gets up, dusts himself down, and does it all over again.

Amazingly, he’s living apart from his long time partner at the moment, and for most young men, especially with a few quid in their pocket, that could lead to all sorts of problems.

But not with these two. As Helen explained, happily giving us an opportunity for a picture..

Image result for helen flanagan and scott sinclair

I honestly don’t know what you were expecting.

‘Me and Matilda live with mum and dad during the week and at weekends we’re in Glasgow with Scott.’

She was speaking to Ruth Langsford, on tv show “Loose Women” which is much more disappointing than it sounds, who asked

‘That must be really hard?’ to nodding approval from scriptwriter Sid James

Actually it’s lovely. It’s nice to have a break!’

In case the Celt was watching, she went on to clarify..

‘It’s not easy but I really wanted to go back to work. I’ve always been supportive of his career and he’s supportive of mine.’

A secure relationship, and theirs seems to be secure, is the basis for success in any career, and it also points to Celtic getting a mature footballer, and not one who is likely to be attracted back south for a few quid more.

Then she went on to talk about Coronation Street, which again sort of explains my disappointment in the relationship between the chat show and its title.

If a player is happy, he can do his job.

There are a lot of happy souls at Celtic right now, and credit must go to the manager for keeping so many players at peace. No one was banging on his door to get away, no one is in the papers telling us he’s holding them back, and even those on the fringes are reacting the way he wants them to when they get onto the pitch.

The history books may well record a thoroughly one sided league campaign, but the memory will be of the team spirit, and for all the cries to get better players in, I’m happy with what we’ve got and how we use it.

Image result for frankie howerd

The manager expressed disappointment at not being able to bring players in last month, but one suspects that may just be to keep the players on their toes.

Especially when you look at these players, some from a report by website HITC, who usually just make things up, a crime if you ask me..

Image result for pot calling kettle black gif

Nedum Onuhoa, QPR…Jordan Mutch, Crystal Palace.. James McCarthy, Everton… Bojan Kirkc, Stoke City.

Not really names to put on your shirt.

The squad have put in a lot of hard work since the manager arrived, and a lot of heart.

Lets give them the chance to take it up a level.

Having said that, however, if someone comes along who is even more determined than the ones we’ve already got, get him in…

And now, we move over to the south of the city for a wee chuckle, as the plucky new club operating out of Ibrox continue their quest for 55 titles in four years…

They faced Hearts, currently changing their style and their playing squad, as new manager Iain Cathro fights a one man battle for his credibility..how will they get on ? Lets get the view of a regular on Radio Clyde Scoreboard, who watches football for a living..

And the “rangers ” players ? Confident ?

Ahead of the game, over to James Tavernier, the one who falls on his arse when you run past him..

Other teams ‘can’t live with us’ says Rangers’ James Tavernier

“It will probably be the first time for a lot of the players, going there with the fans on top of you,” he said. “But the guys will soak it up, and if we play the way we did against Motherwell then teams can’t live with us.”

How did it go then ?

Hearts 4 – Rangers 1: Mark Warburton lost for words after heavy defeat

MARK WARBURTON admitted he was at a loss to explain the WORST Rangers performance of his chequered Ibrox reign.

Warburton – given pelters by the Rangers fans who remained to the bitter end – said: “We are Rangers Football Club, we don’t lose 4-1. But we did tonight.

Image result for crazy man cartoon

Still, at least those staunch and loyal supporters will never walk away, and will stand shoulder to shoulder with him in defiant non surrender

that’s it for me. I can’t watch the farce any longer.. one mistake after another. it’s fucking pathetic

In all my days I don’t recall ever being more embarrassed by a Rangers performance than I do tonight. Could easily be double figures. Wow

Warburton doesn’t have a Fucking clue what he is doing. If he’s not sacked tonight and dave king doesn’t sell up asap we are fucked

That cunts been living off the back of a Barry McKay goal in a semifinal we won on penalties. Get him to absolute fuck and 90% of our squad

Gonnae pack this fucking myth that it’s ‘one shite performance’ … it’s not. It’s been a season of fucking non stop disaster

What they need is a leader, someone who can give them back their direction, and oddly enough, he’s already at the club…

They’re not all giving up…

I think we can safely say he’s out of the honeymoon period, and if they hadn’t blown all their money on the Port Vale keeper, and if they weren’t depending on short term loans from their directors, they’d have paid him off by now.

If you want to get an idea of how times have changed, and how irrelevant “rangers ” really are now, watch a re run of last nights win over Aberdeen.

See if you can spot the crowd cheering as the goals at Tynecastle flew in….

Yesterday, we had this picture …

The Jury is still very much out on Dedryck Boyata, he has strung a few solid percormances together recently (one against part time opposition) and chipped in with a vital goal or two.
I will reserve the gushing praise until i have seen him consistently defend well and command his position, if he does this then we maybe have a player on our hands.
I still have serious doubts though, but he deserves a chance to turn it all around and i wish him well in his efforts, if he is doing well then that should mean Cetic are winning, and that is the be all and end all.
Dedryck, you have 60,000 people willing you to do well at home games, there should be no reason for lack of confidence.
Be confident, you have all the weapons at your disposal (no not you Efe, although you are a weapon), big, strong and a decent amount of pace.
Just go out onto the pitch and kick ass….and tell the opposition you are going to kick their arse!
I want you to succeed Dedryck, it’s that simple!
Talking about kicking, Ash Taylor’s challenge on Sinky last night was out of fucking order, i wish a few Celtic players would start dishing it out, we play nice football but i sometimes think we are a bit soft in the tackle.
A Mick McCarthy, Roy Aitken type is needed.

Hearts v Sevco?
Funny as fuck…the Huns haven’t suffered enough, long may their pain continue!

Monti, that my thinking too on Boyata, still not 100% convinced yet but he is on the right road to proving himself…..playing in Europe will be the real test for him but i hope he can become a great player for us.

ewanbhoy,
Long way for him to go yet, but all we can ask is he performs like he is just now, no one wants him not to do well, if he turns his whole shit around and becomes a ‘must play’ defender, i will eat humble pie.
Anyone who knows me or has met me, knows that i like a pie, so eating more of them is not a problem 🙂

It is no coincidence that all of the players at teh club have improved since RD left. This manager will not accept anything less than 100% and he has shown that by dropping the man who scored 40 goals, won multiple player of the year awards and has come out publically to tell him he needs to do more. He is also a firm beleiver in playng players on form not on reputation. Boyata wouldnt have been at the club if most Celtic fans had their way but all of a sudden we are starting to see the player who showed all the promise at Man City. He has worked hard and he is now keeping fans favourite Erik out of the team. GMS and Jamesy are actually tackling people now, unheard of at any stage of their Celtic careers. All of the players are playing for their places, future every single week and that is what it shoudl be at a club like Celtic. Now it is down to the board to match BRambition for the club, I tihnk Desmond will do that.

Celtic are the best club in the world, with fans who know football, and how we want to see our players play.
Boyata needed time to adjust, he did well in games, and then others was shocking. But the constant changes in our back line didn’t help him. He is very young as Centre Backs go who normally peak in their late 20s.It was a big move for him to come here, and not all can adapt right away, some do but it takes time to be a true Celtic player, much like Armstrong. I think he was under pressure at a time when the fans were turning on the manager, and the team were playing not to the standard of a Celtic team, and this affected his confidence. Brendan and especially Toure there now, will bring out the best in him. He shows he wants it,with his extra training, and he could become the dominant centre back for years to come. He will make mistakes again, but we have to let him learn from them, just look at Toure even with all his experience,he cost us 2 goals.
All the players we held judgement on good or bad, should be ripped away from our memory,as this is a new dawning, and all players who want to achieve and be all they can be,can do it here, under Brendan. I’m lovin it.
Another Bowl sir.

Nail on the head Jimmy, the constant changing of the back line last season was bad for multiple players especially Craig Gordon. KT remained top of the class because he is genuine class, but the others struggled under a poor management team.
Clean slate time for these players; Boyata deserves the time and patience to grow into his role at Celtic, and yes he will make mistakes at some point, but I don’t know a single player who never does. Armstrong took his chance, Boyata is taking his; any player who gets on the park now has (imho) done the hard graft that Brendan demands and he has picked them on the strength of their hard work. And because they’re at it it means the our performances are solid and consistent. Bravo Brendan!!

Well said Jimmy all players make mistakes and have poor runs. Boyata is on the up and as you point out others were playing poorly under RD and have now began to fulfill the potential they showed to be at Celtic in the first place. I think many of them have one or two gears more that they can move up and we’ll need that in Europe. I’m sure Brendan knows what he wants to do with the squad and has been clear about it. I’m very happy with progress and I think there is more to come.

He is one centre back too many. The ones getting a game are better than him at this time. I suppose the manager has decided that he is no longer in his plans and is looking to get the most out of the other defensive players. I assume that’s why they failed to offer him a new deal. I understand you have your doubts on Boyata got it, fair enough and sonner or later on balance you’ll be proved right or wrong.

Boyata is a changed player indeed – still early days – but that uncertain and timid player that alwayas seemed one pass away from disaster last season, is now a player transformed. The pictures above kind of make the point. Brendan and Toure must clearly have been a major reason for this.

And by the way, the goal game from a free-kick,not a corner.

I think the credit must go to Boyata he’s the one doing the extra yards after training not Brendan or Toure.
His goal came from a set piece delivery from out wide point is he’s the guy who met the delivery and buried it with some class.
As some of us suggested he might given the chance 😉

I’m intrigued by the discussion in the press of how this game was a tactical battle between BR and the a-hole who manages Aberdeen. While playing at SEVCO recently, McInnes was completely devoid of any tactical approach it seemed and has his best players were left on the bench. It really makes me wonder if all of the effort of these other SPL team is put into the four games a year they play against Celtic? The same teams like Motherwell seem to capitulate very easily when playing SEVCO who were shown for what they actually are last night at Hearts.
