Celtic Diary Wednesday December 7: What Could Have Been

Although European participation is over now for six or seven months, and the lads never let anyone down, you can;t help but feel a little gutted that we didn;t make the Europa League.

We would have done well in that, if the side had continued to improve at the rate its been doing this season.

Celtic said their farewells to the Champions League in Manchester last night with a credible 1-1 draw with Manchester City. It means the hoops finished bottom of the group, with three draws and three defeats.

Realistically, at this stage in the development of Brendan bhoys, we couldn’t have expected more. Yet as the campaign went on confidence began to replace optimism, and just a goal here, or a point there, would have seen Celtic gearing up for Europe after Christmas.

and yes, although last nights result was irrelevant, the performance wasn’t, and Celtic showed the support-I couldn’t care less what the “experts ” think, -that we’re not that far away from eating at the big table again.

Its even more encouraging when you consider that the players who have shone in the tournament, Brown, Armstrong, Izaguirre, Gordon and Forrest were among those deemed by a fair number of us to be past their sell by date.

Turns out they just needed someone to tell them they weren’t. Someone who they could believe.

Turns out that that someone likes being that someone, and wants to be that someone for some time yet.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has given us his thoughts on the Celtic job after six months in the job.

“I have spent most of my career in England in the last number of years, in the Premier League. But I’m happy and that’s what’s most important.

“That’s what I strive for and I think happy people win. For me, I’ve very fortunate I’m at a club I love to be at.

“I thoroughly enjoy working here. But when you’ve worked in the Premier League there is always that speculation ‘When will you come back?’.

“My only focus is on Celtic, and myself and my staff are absolutely loving it. Am I as happy as I’ve been? In every aspect. My life is very content.

“My family and everything outside of that is happy and loving everything about it.

“And of course, every other week we get the chance to play at Celtic Park with near enough a full stadium. So life is good.”

The press in Scotland seem to have taken this rather badly..

Image result for people jumping out of windows

“I took time out after Liverpool to reflect and I needed to ensure when I came back, it wasn’t for one or two seasons.

“When I spoke to the people at the club, they sold it to me.

“I was a huge supporter of Celtic, so I was aware anyway.

“The most important thing was the challenge and to work somewhere different.

“I could have come back to the Premier League, but to be at Celtic is a huge privilege.

“I don’t see it as a stepping stone. I see myself coaching for another 20-odd years and it is highly unlikely I will be at Celtic for another 20-odd years, given how football works.

“But my intention is to be at Celtic for as long as I possibly can, to let the club grow and to take it as far as I can.

“It has huge potential and, although there are financial restrictions, I am absolutely loving it. I’m very fortunate.

“It may not have the profile of the Premier League, but it doesn’t diminish the pride I have at being at Celtic and I hope I can continue for a number of years.

“For me, it’s about enjoying my life. I’m living the dream being the manager of Celtic. This is a huge privilege for me.

“Glasgow’s a wonderful city to live in. People from all sectors there have afforded me an incredible welcome. The city and the surrounding area has been absolutely first class.

“The most important thing is happiness. And when I’m happy, I’m winning.”

There’s no reason to doubt what he says. all of us would prefer a job we loved to one we didn’t. That won;t stop press specualtion the next time an english Premiership manager gets the heave ho, but it should make us feel better.

And we’re the ones that matter, right ?

The game last night was a personal triumph for Patrick Roberts, the winger on loan from Manchester City, who scored his first goal at the Etihad after just four minutes. For Celtic.

When players score against their old club, they tend to be a little muted in their celebrations, especially if they were respected there. When they scpre against their current club, their response could dtermine not so much if they’ll ever go back, but if the supporters want them back.

Roberts, it appears , has chosen his club;

Image result for Patrick roberts v Man City

And his manager down there, Pep Guardiola, appears to have taken that on board;

Image result for Patrick roberts v Man City

Having Roberts on loan for so long has maybe given him the chance to grow to love the club, and it may be easier to convince him to join up full time in the summer, when by a happy coincidence, he’ll have just a year left on his contract, and a flat in Glasgow.

And then there’s his big pal at the club, which brings us back to being happy at work, which Rodgers will no doubt use if persuasion is necessary .

Embedded

This happy at work lark will probably apply to more than just those two, but the significant issue is that those two have both experienced England , and if Rodgers is happy enough out of it, maybe Roberts is too.

Guardiola was asked about Roberts after the game..

‘He was good, especially the goal which was fantastic,’ . ‘He played well, he’s a good player. We are going to think about (him) at the end of the season.’

Yeah. I’m quite sure Guardiola will be saying to himself “we’ll be better next season when Paddy is back”

When the transfer window opens in the summer, he won’t even remember who he is.

He’s more likely to be looking at Dembele, who made a point of applauding the support, but did it on his own.

Maybe that was his European farewell…

Other managers might remember one or two of our players this January when they whip out their chequebooks to try to rescue their season. Apart from Moussa Dembele, players such as Stuart Armstrong, Tom Rogic and James Forrest will have caught the eyes of the lower to mid tale EPL sides, and the perennial worry that the team will be broken up just as it starts o take shape will resurface.

You can’t blame players for following the money, but under Rodgers there’s probably less chance of that happening.

The general feeling is that good times are just around the corner, and that they may be here for a while.

But its not all good news. Once more, Scottish football fans have disgraced themselves in the south… and the BBC especially, has a new lead story.

This time, much to the relief of the SFA, the culprit was caught , and there’ll be no need for a special edition of Crimewatch.

To be fair, the Celtic fans on the whole behaved, as they always do, and you have to tip your hat to them in the face of restrictive policing, the like of which is not seen in Scotland..

Elsewhere in Europe, Craig Thomson has made a bit of a name for himself, and its the same name shouted at him in Scotland. He took charge of the Beiktas-Dynamo Kiev game, and performed to his usual standard, as those at the match tweeted..

He is forever widening his circle of admirers, but he may avoid the ones in Turkey for a while yet, although i think we should start a crowdfund to send him out there, to rebuild bridges and explain the misunderstanding when he failed to give a penalty for the Turks as they weren’t wearing blue.

Thomsons next game is at Firhill on Friday night, and you’ll be pleased to learn that ours is as well.

Elsewhere in Scotland. Hearts showed their ambition when they appointed Ian Cathro as manager. Cathro is a highly rated coach, and is responsible for setting up the youth system at Dundee Utd, which has delivered one or two bright prospects.

As usual, because he isn’t one of the old guard of Scottish managers, the press have been quick to jump on his back and criticise both him and the club. Kris Boyd, in his column, as we have seen in a previous diary, the biggest cuplrit.

As with Ronny Deila, Paul le Guen and Berti Vogts, he’ll soon realise that the” best wee country in the world ” isn;t anywhere near being the best wee country in the world, no matter how he gets on, and here at Etims we wish him all the best.

With the vitriol aimed at him before he even starts, which would have surprised him considering the praise he was worthy of when he left Valencia-he’ll have to hit the ground running in his first game against “rangers “, who, according to Matthew Lindsay of the Ibrox  Evening Times, the very team who he was widely tipped to take over when ally McCoist was sent into the garden for being shite.

IAN Cathro today announced he has left his position as assistant manager with La Liga club Valencia – fuelling speculation he may be poised to join Rangers.

The former Dundee United youth coach, who is just 28, was appointed as No.2 to Nuno Espirito Santo at the Spanish giants last year.

He first met former Portuguese footballer Santo on an SFA coaching course at Largs in 2009 and struck up a friendship.

The ex-Forfar Athletic and Brechin City player joined the backroom team at Rio Ave in Portugal when Nuno was made manager there in 2012.

Cathro, who has been credited with bringing through the talented crop of youngsters at Tannadice in the last few years, has been linked with a move to Ibrox as well as Liverpool in recent months.

Its a great decision by Hearts to move away from the tired old minds of managers such as Jefferies, Calderwood and McLeish, and when we asked another who had been touted for the job, he showed his disappointment at losing out;

Image result for barry ferguson two fingers rangers

Mind you, that would explain the media vitriol …

The Lennon CSC held its monthly meeting a couple of days ago, and as usual, we planned our trips for the coming month.

Well, we arranged to go on the 17th against Dundee, and thats it then until the 28th of January as all the home games are in midweek, making it impossible for us to attend, and impossible to understand why we bother with a season book.

We can’t be the only ones who are missing out on matches due to tv or other reasons, and Celtic need to fight the corner of supporters like us, because it appears they have forgotten that not all of the season book holders live in Glasgow.

The world of acting lost another legend yesterday when it was announced that Peter Vaughan had passed away, aged 93.

You may not recall the name, but you will know the face. what you may not know is who he supported…

May he rest in peace.

Caption competition now, and we go back to Monday as there was no diary yesterday. You se,  one of the delights of marriage when the two of you have a morning together is that you can spend hours trudging around ships buying presents they don’t want for people you don’t like with money you haven’t got )

On Monday, we showed you this…

and this quip was felt to be the most apt, original and amusing…

happy, satisfied, proud and hungry for more.
we were brilliant last night, the better team, controlled most of the game and created the better chances and we are doing this in the CL !!!
when was the last time we controlled a game at this level especially away from home ? not even under MON did we play how we played last night in an away game in the CL. some might say it was against a weakened Man C team with nothing to play for but im not buying that. the way we kept the ball and passed and moved and creating so many chances was a joy to watch.
Celtic are back and we only getting started, Brendan Rodgers we thank you and if he can keep improving us the way he has done so far, by the time his Celtic days end (hopefully not for a long time)he will go down in our history as our second greatest manager as i think we can take us past the last 16 or could win us the Europa League……..am i getting carried away ???…..NO I AM NOT

Ewanbhoy,
The fact Brendan is giving us a formidable team that has substance, alongwith making the support believe is fantastic in itself mate.
The one thing that is standing out for me (apart from my growing belly) is the players have confidence, in themselves, their team mates and clearly the manager.
The team isn’t the finished article yet, but we are heading that way.
It is fantastic to see!

Ralph,
Was very proud of our display last night and while we all want to win, at this level, Champions league level, i get a lot from seeing Celtic giving the big guns a fight on the park, toe to toe.
There was a spell in the 2nd half where you could physically see the Celtic players grow in confidence, great to see.
I thought Craig Gordon could have done a bit better with Iheanacho’s goal but hey ho.
The players are giving everything for our club and our supporters, that will always do me.
Brendan? Keep it going my friend, proud to have you here as our manager!

Celtic 15m.

Exactly Uralius!! Football has moved away from “sport” and a bit closer to “show business”. It’s breeding primadonas and it’s like a big trough of money that many players just want to stuff their pockets with while kissing the badge and thumbing their noses at the fans. I totally fekking hate when they start this pointing at their name on the back of their shirts when they score..I always feel like shouting “I fekking know it’s you”. Of course they’re making sure the cameramen, commentators and viewers recognize them. They promote themselves at every opportunity and their heads inflate faster than their ability. I’d rather bring through young guys like Tierney who are proud to play for us and pay them a wage that lessens any temptation to head to the boring over-rated and over-paid EPL.
And even with all the money they get for “kickind a baw aroon a park” some of them are still not satisfied..Neymar, Messi, Ronaldo all getting investigated and tried for tax evasion..even Mourhino with all his millions is being investigated. Greed will kill the beautiful game in the end.

Monti, agreed m8. If Celtic had the same buying power as Liverpool Man City Man Utd etc, then Celtic park would be home to world class players. Celtic are one of the greatest clubs in world football, only the league we play in, stops us from achieving all that we deserve.
They don’t want us in England simply because they know how good we would get.

I think if Celtic had the same financial clout our Support would become just as disenfranchised as the Man City fans.
They may well have a side full of top end players but the support is a shadow of the former Main Road support many of whom have been priced out of the game as a result of the billion or so ploughed into it.
I think many of the old faithful actually miss the old days when a win was something to be rejoiced.
Be careful what you wish for as I always say you might just get it like Mansoor City.

Very assured performance last night and great progress has been made this season so far. Would be nice to clean up all the winning money from domestic competitions to add to he CL incomes which I saw was total 34m. This also dispels ridiculous assertion that we need some incarnation of Rangers to succeed – total pish! On the football front and financial front there is no need for a sevco at all. Celtic Board take note.

Brilliant night last night, fans ,players, manager ,coaching staff, all did us proud.
From that defeat in Gibralter, a huge learning curve has developed, and put in place by Brendan and his team.
Stuart Armstrong welcome to Celtic, you have finally stopped being a Dundee Unitep player and now you are a Celtic player.
I watched you run about like a headless chicken, continually playing the wrong pass, and getting rid of the ball, simply due to the fact you didn’t believe in yourself enough. Now you can shine in the midfield for Celtic and go from strength to strength.
Tom Rogic, another great display, yes like Rebus says you get caught in possession, but you can change a game, and see a pass long before most others,a player on the up,and can only get better.
Brendan, has brought this team together,a team who were going backwards, who were not enjoying their football, and as a supporter, I wasn’t enjoying watching them. Only by Brendan’s appointment did I renew my season books.
Dermot took the bull by the horns, knew who was needed, and once again it looks like the good times are back.
On last nights match, thought Gordon could have done better for their goal, but apart from that, there was nothing more the players could have given. I only wanted us to show up last night,we did that and more.

On our champions league campaign. I thought before hand we would get 3 points, a win at home to Gladbach was my thinking.
So after 3 respectable draws which all 3 with a bit of luck, could and should have been victories, what a campaign it has been.
If Brendan can stay for at least 4 years, with the board backing him, we could be seeing with luck in the draws, a top 2 but at the very least a Europa league spot coming our way for the seasons to come.
I still believe a change to summer football, would guarantee us champions league,as we would be match fit and ready to take them all on. But there seems to be no appetite for it in this country.
Here’s looking at great times ahead.

Agree with much of the comment here today on last night and the direction of the team. Also spot on about mid week fixtures – they are a real pain for those of us with season tickets who live well away from the central belt. I’ll probably miss two of the four games this month – and we have two more next month: so that’s more expense and time off work. The club needs to take this up with the SPFL – as someone once said football without fans is nothing.

I guess we didn’t get hammered by Man City yesterday as the hunbiased Scottish media expected/hoped. So, since they had to tear up the verbal ridicule they had prepared they have gone to plan B…today they have at least 3 negative stories about Celtic. 1) a Celtic fan letting off a flare on a train 2) a former pedophile kitman of Celtic, Hibs and Falkirk who has handed himself into the police, 3)Celtic charged by UEFA over crowd disturbances during the match with Man City.
And yesterday we had the world exclusive of a Celtic fan throwing a hamburger at a horse…if it had been a sevco supporter the headline would have read “Kind hearted animal loving fan feeds hungry horse”.
I realize that these events are factually true and will be reported, but the glaring question is why is the overwhelming number of negative stories about Celtic? They link us with ANYTHING negative while totally blanking the treasure trove of scandals, dodgy deals, lies and financial and accounting mess that exist over at “the bigot-est club in Scotland”. Of course the answer to my own question is “because they are hand in hand with Level 5 and they also share their agenda. It’s nothing more than a deliberate orchestrated attempt to smear the image of our club while promoting that dying freakish offspring of the club that died in 2012.

Reply to  Funkyy

Funky, although I agree with you on your assumption of the agenda behind the stories,we really have to sort out the fans who bring pyro to matches. It cant be that hard to catch them.
Its time Celtic took decisive action against them. Ban the cunts before some kid is hurted.
Onto the monster who worked as a coach,at our club and others I hope he gets his head kicked in,sorry don’t give a fuck what age he is,he is a monster of the worst kind. He didn’t care what age the young kids were.
The media have been desperate for all of this to be associated with Celtic, instead of doing it for the right reasons.
Yes Funky the media do want the negative,we shouldn’t be giving it to them on a plate.
So the fans have to do much better,we cant keep throwing fireworks around we have been warned and fined too many times. They wont be happy till we have to play behind closed doors.

Maybe this explains UEFA constantly hounding Celtic whilst looking away from every other pyro that takes place inside grounds.
Linfield hun and Norn Iron UEFA official Crawford Wilson who reported us to UEFA, ignoring Man City’s fans attacking us. Hun-believeable
Campbell Ogilvile no there tae? Cunts with two surnames can’t get trusted.

The Scottish media, (the hun monkies)of Scotland, live in a time warp, backed by the establishment, how it must hurt them to see and read of the Tics. success.
Our club tho not perfect lives to assist through its Foundation,a guiding light of charity and help to various deprived members of Scottish society.
Our supporters, tho not all are perfect, provide cash and goodwill to many, they deserve our thanks, for there kindness and generosity.
Brendan and his Management team have given us back our pride, how very lucky we are to have him leading the team, the players led by Broony are showing us a quality of skill that we hoped that they possessed, any doubts has been diminished. I hope Forrests injury is not to serious,he like other players are stepping up to the plate.

I think the side exceeded expectations in the Champions League this Season.
Probably the toughest Group we could have drawn and we still managed 3 results out of 6.
I think the Barca opener and home tie v Borussia aside we competed well in all the other games against very good competition.
I read somewhere the other day Borussia spent close to £100m building that side and the side City put out was close to that too last night.
You would have struggled to pick which side was the money side (if you weren’t aware)in the 3 ties we played so that speaks volumes about how well we competed.
180 minutes played against one of the Tournaments fancied teams and they failed to take a lead once in either game?
A massive fuck you to the English media methinks.
The exciting thing is we now have the finances to strengthen in weak areas again in January and the summer.
In effect we are now ahead of the game.
I think the RB area needs attention at this level and Brown needs some quality in there to help out (and help rest him more often).
The first goal last night highlighted a weakness in the DM area again when we got hit on the fast counter both Brown and Armstrong were caught wrong side of the attack a feature under Deila that seems to haunt us still.
Bitton needs replaced and Lustig needs quality backup.
Gamboa has yet to prove that he can and I hope he does.

Thought the Celtic supporters on Tuesday night were fantastic yet again.
Their choice of songs once again inspirational, Irish Republican songs being belted out fills my heart with pride.
Long may our songs of justice and freedom roar no matter where we go.
