Celtic Diary Tuesday November 29 100 Not Out

So, there you have it. a comfortable enough 3-0 cup final win, the hundredth trophy in a long and illustrious history. don’t know about you, but its taken me until this morning to recover.

Trophies may be a plenty down Parkhead way, but that still doesn’t make this one any less special than any of the others. Too appreciate the good, you must have endured the bad, though thankfully those days are well and truly in the past.

Aberdeen will be disappointed they didn’t really make a game of it, but their mentality was shown to all when they elected to do a guard of honour before the game, staring in admiration at the Celtic huddle pre kick off.

Whilst they were doing that, a passionate Scott Brown was telling the players that they could be a part of history,,,

Incidentally, note the expression of the dons players third in fromthe left. Either thats what passes as determination up north, or they’ve dragged him in from the pub about half an hour before.

The game itself was fairly straightforward. Celtic scored some goals, Aberdeen didn’t, and never really looked like doing so.

Tenacious work from the revelation that is Jozo Simunovic forced the ball out to Tom Rogic, who curled one past a despairing keeper, sixteen minutes in, and an equally determined run from James forrest ended when he hit the ball in a straight line beyond him, showing the variety Celtic now have up front.

This ended the game as a comptetitive event, and proof came in the second half when Celtic were awarded a penalty which Moussa Dembele slotted away to add a few more quid onto his next wage.

Yes, Celtic were awarded a penalty in a Cup final, which means they won’t be allowed one in their next Hampden visit, unless the game is over early on in that one too.

After the game Dembele popped out for something to eat, and surprisingly was allowed in wearing his Celtic tracksuit. He didn;t nip home to get it either, he already had it with him.

I think we’d a love to know where the place is that lets you in wearing sporting clothes…( Bella Napoli. Shawlands, according to the Evening Times )

Whereas Dembele hit the town, Craig gordon , it appears, went home and hit the dog..

“We went through the entire campaign without losing a goal when we won the League Cup two seasons ago and now we’ve repeated the feat,”

It’s very good to win any game and have a clean sheet but to do it in a cup final is very special. I’d have been gutted if we’d lost one late on and I was having a go at the guys in front of me to ensure that they kept their concentration and saw out the game.

“You can get complacent and make a slack pass that costs you a goal but there was only really one long-range shot towards the end to deal with.”

Can’t fault the attitude, but, hey, lighten up a bit…

Back in the days of black and white football, it doesn;t seem so long ago when Celtic lifted their first trophy…

That game was played in the winter as well, and an obliging referee let the players keep their coats on. The win was over Queens Park, who became the first Glasgow side to go into decline when they refused to pay the type of wages other clubs paid back in those days.

This compares with the most recent crash involving a Glasgow club who paid the correct wages, but not quite correctly.

One of their former directors congratulated the hoops, without a trace of bitterness..

Oddly enough, his lot won’t either.

Over the weekend, it was revealed things have gone from bad to worse when a bid to raise new shares via soft loans fell through when it failed to gather enough support, leaving the club, like the rest of us, a bit short for christmas.

The press were quick to blame the man who refused to put his club loyalties before his own finances, despite all that information supposedly being protected by shareholder law.

He’s gone to ground,  as they say, but one of our readers thinks they’ve spotted him.

Photo published for Rough sleeping: Great Britain moves toward criminalizing homelessness — RT Op-Edge

With the first part of the treble secured, and really, its going to take something special to stop the other two parts, attention turned to the Scottish cup as the draw for the fourth round took place, and with the entry of the Premier sides at this stage, eager fans looked to see who Celtic would get, and who would have to visit Ibrox.

The Champions face either Albion Rovers or Queen of the South away from home , whilst it’s Motherwells turn to help keep the lights on at Ibrox as the nights continue to draw in.

Physically and metaphorically.

Celtic’s domestic  success and dominance in the first half of the season has delighted the support. So it should. Only two points dropped in the league, no goals conceded in winning the League Cup, and no sign of the juggernaut hitting the rails, he typed, spectacularly mixing his metaphors in a bid to make the transition into reading the next bit easier, as its from an expert pundit in the Daily Record, so the quality of the narrative has to slip to allow it to blend in seamlessly.

Only a few months later, this was revised…

and after Christmas we can expect all sorts of wonderful ideas to change things if the hoops continue to leave their newest rivals on the outside looking in.

One bookmaker has already decided to make some money from this…

evens;  League Reconstruction to make all teams play all their games at Ibrox, unless they aren’t playing “rangers ”

5/2 Handicap system introduced where a team playing “rangers ” has to remove one player per goal scored.

3/1  Handicap system where teams who finish above a certain position on the league-i.e. the one occupied by “rangers ” to start the season with a deduction which matches the points difference they had over “rangers “, thus evening out the advantage

5/1 “rangers” to be allowed to choose any eleven players they want from any of the other clubs gratis, but should they be sold afterwards, the fee goes to the Ibrox club

10oooo0/1 someone will finally see sense and kick the Ibrox club, the controlling bodies and the reporters who slavishly do their bidding out of the game for good so the rest of us can get on with restoring its tarnished image. There’s little need to get on this quick, because the odds will lengthen and its never going to happen anyway.

Just think if it did though, scenes like this would disappear, the stop and search before the cup final..

The game would be run for the fans, and as a result, more and more of them would come back to the game, as it becomes a competitve form of live entertainment better than anything else available on a Saturday.

Yes, I said Saturday.

Thats a long term dream, what about the short term ?

Well, its nearly January, and the nonsense has started… but it might not be nonsense. We sent our man to find out the word on the street…

Image result for what's the word on the street johnny

James McCarthy…offer made, Everton stalling, player wants to come…

An extra few quid from the sale of Virgil van Dijk to Everton/Manchester City/Liverpool ? Looks like being enough to cover the fee for McCarthy with ridiculous sums being mentioned as English clubs flash their plumage at the big Dutch defender, who has been a rock at St. Marys since he moved south whenever it was.

Out of sight , out of mind as far as I’m concerned, but the extra money will be welcome.

Now , a wee bit more serious..

Gordon Smith has called upon the SFA to investigate historisrse,  sex abuse within Scottish football. Knowing that the bold Gordon isn’t the brightest light in the darkness, this idea, which is in itself brave and noble, must have come from someone else. If, of course, it is his idea, then I must apologise and offer praise for what is a necessary step forward for the Scottish game.

If not Smith, though, who ? Someone within the SFA, or someone at a PR agency. perhaps ?

Thats my thinking, as there is no doubt that there are some within the game that would like to see the abuse at Celtic Boys club, which resulted in prosecution and conviction of the perpetrator, all over the papers again.

Instead of just in the stands at most games.

However, though  its far from me to doubt their intentions here, one wonders what the real motive is.

With allegations growing daily in England, with seven clubs now involved, an investigation by the SFA would be right and proper, but as it would be the first time they’ve done anything right and proper, i have my doubts about the motive.

However, whatever the motive, its time to do exactly that, and cleanse the game of this abhorrent abuse, if it needs cleaning of course, in order to first of all , protect youngsters, and secondly, to protect youngsters. Thats the main issue here.

It should have been done when the Torbett atrocities came to light, as their was a chance then to appeal for other victims to come forward.

It wasn’t, for whatever reason, but there is no excuse not to do it now.

There was no diary yesterday, the second omission in three days, as I couldn;t get out of bed on Saturday either, and for any of you seeking compensation, here’s who to tackle..

Image result for pint of lager

On Sunday we asked you about this picture…

Image result for celtic v aberdeen league cup final 2000

Which didn’t get any answers as you were all too busy arguing with yourself. I’m guessing the call I got from Monti on Sunday was from Malones, but I couldn;t hear a thing for the racket you were all making.

Sounds like fun, though.

so today, and please, a little effort , if you will..

Oh, before I forget. A big well done to my mate Chuck over in the USA. He’s passed all his entrance exams to join the police, and in his final test he was asked to take a gun and go out and shoot nine black guys and a cat.

“Why the cat ? ” he asked.

Ralph,
Just a great day and night on Sunday, would have been nice if you could have made it,but i’m sure there will be more occasions!
Simunovic did really well getting to the loose ball and feeding it out to Tom, since he has came back into the side Simunovic has had a really strong influence on the defence!
Long may that continue!

P.S. I seem to have caused a bit of a stir by NOT going to the final on Sunday.

Odd. 🙂

P.p s.Ralph, what about James Forrest on Sunday? Class.

Fair play to you Monti, you called a big Forrest performance in the (Friday?) diary and he delivered; deserved Mom!
Also agree on Jozo, a month or two ago who would have thought we’d not be missing Toure? To be fair he must have had a big impact on Eric who has come on leaps and bounds, but those two have dove tailed well and could be our pairing for years to come.

There is no doubting Forrest can be a match winner however it’s normally only in about 5 matches a season he is one.
Thankfully he picked a Hampden final to be one of them.
I actually thought Brown was immense at Hampden from whistle to whistle.
Big Jozos recovery tackle was superb I thought he had lost the ball and was going to be left out of position but he made a great challenge to retain it and pass to Rogic.
2 great goals and a quality peno.
100 not out and still swinging at the crease.

Dembelle aside, all the other ten players were available to the previous Management team, for last Sundays final.
The team performance was like night and day, compared to previous years.Composure, belief in what they were doing, game Management, confidense and talent.
No wonder that Mc Haggis looked shocked, beaten, demoralized, especially with his admission from Brendan, that he intended to add 3 further players in January, also factor in the injured Tierny and Sinclair and WOW.
Just WOW.

Wee ten thirty, playing for Birmingham, nutted Johny Hayes, the Fulham player and the Beckham of his day and knocked him out, the Fulham forward who went to remonstrate with him,got skelped with a haymaker, earning Bertie a sending of.
Big Jock called him back to the Tic and converted him from a winger to an inside right.
Big Jock was one of the few Managers who could realize what were the best Fitba. positions were for players, one of his many talents.

Monti if every fan of Celtic was a Supporter we would need a capacity of around 9 million at CP.
Life moves on for some of us as going to games is no longer no 1 priority in life.
Sure we would all LOVE to be there every week but for the vast majority of fans that’s simply not the case.
Good luck to those that do go every game or even now and again because without them the job would be harder for the players.
I’ve been a Supporter and have long been a fan since.
No shame in that none at all and tae fuck with those that think different because that’s only an opinion.
I will go back again no doubt about that but for now it’s just not possible.
I make my wee contribution through the Celtic Foundation and buying merchandise for the weans.
Oh and defending the good name of Celtic whenever I hear it being attacked or besmirched.

It was easy to be a critic of Forrest because for someone who has promised so much he has delivered so little in ther past years since his emergence.
Btw 5 games a season was not an exact figure it was merely a figure used to show just how often he FAILS to deliver over a season.
I will be happy to be proved wrong of course at the end of the Season.
Commons will be gone all the same without even kicking a ball it seems I called that one fairly spot on?
Notice how no one cracked a light on the fact he’s not had a sniff under Brendan?

It will be available on iTunes, with all proceeds going to the Green Brigade to help towards hefty legal fees group members face due to the ridiculous “offensive behaviour act” brought in by the Scottish government, it will also help towards displays for the second half of the season
The Green Brigade have worked hard throughout the last 10 years to improve the atmosphere at Celtic park, while using displays to promote and encourage people to get involved with left wing politics, anti fascism and Irish republicanism.
We have a good relationship with the group, playing many fundraisers for them throughout the years, and we look forward to being able to help in a small way, make the second half of the season a success for them and to celebrate the groups 10 year anniversary.

Ralph,

Sorry about your lost day. Celebrations can be a right bastard sometimes, especially when you simply cannot remember what you celebrated. Thankfully, in your case, there are hundreds of people commenting on here to remind you that something happened on Sunday afternoon that just might account for your going missing yesterday. When the old heid clears you might possibly remember a trophy was won by Celtic guaranteeing the first of a possible three that would lead to what is commonly known as The Treble. Now, as mike the fermer will tell you, it is unwise to count your chickens before they are hatched so don’t go spawning ugly ducklings by mistake. Not to boast is the essence of caution even when all the facts point to a definitive conclusion. It is best to keep one’s powder dry till their is actually something worth firing at. That way we will not be jumping the gun and getting buckshot u the arse as a consequence. If you fancy mixed metaphors then this comment is the curry of all curries, full of flavour but no certainty about the ingredients.

I see the king may have become a dictator or an alley copy cat. There are rumours ans suspicions the said glorious leader on the south side may have caused the leak regarding Ally’s voting preferences. The illegality will not concern him as he deals with that on a daily basis. However, the irony is he appears to be shadowing his accused ex-employee – gardener, if preferred – by demanding to know how his esteemed or steaming colleagues on the board voted the other day. It would appear that, although sailing the same boat, they are not all on the same deck – metaphorically speaking, of course.

On your serious point – a rarity – I agree unequivocally about investigating the possibility of abuse in Scottish football. Hopefully, the game is in good health from that point of view but it is best to make sure. Like, you, my immediate reaction was an alternative agenda being the root cause of the demand in the press. I believe all our supporters and everyone connected with Celtic would admit that what happened in the past was a black mark in our history caused, it would seem, by one man. Thankfully, a board that was not particularly renowned for its forthrightness and efficiency, acted swiftly and strongly at the time. Sadly, it is an incident that will haunt us and that will be eternally used against us. We will simply have to live with that. However, we know the right and only actions were taken at the time and even though the sins of one stain all of us, we can bear the sticks and stanes with dignity, without seeking justification and simply move on.

At my age life is just one big happy crackpot! I’m just glad all the world is green when I wake up in the afternoon. It is such a joy to ever have the blues – no, nay, never, no, nay never, no more, will I see the wild “rangers”, no, never no more!”. Apologies to the Dubliners.

Ralph,

Forgot two things. Wee Bertie – magic!!! – as always.

Thoughts and prayers go to the South American footballers, the crew and reporters who died in the plane crash and sympathy to their families, relatives and friends. R.I.P.

Monti,
McCarthy would be a great addition. Also would not winge if Denayer was reconsidered as Toure is short term.
Any ways whatever BR does is ok with me, hopefully u too!

Cartvale,
I think James McCarthy would really enhance the midfield, would love to see Denayer back.

Simunovic, Denayer and Sviatchenko in a 3?

I still think a top goalkeeper needs brought in and Gordon used as the number two, Fasan and Bailly out.
A striker who can make an impact should be sought in January, Ciftci out!

I like to see all Celtic players perform well in a match. Forrest is no exception.

You could see a difference in Forrest last season where he appeared much more robust due to working out in the gym. This additional strength allowed him to be free of injury for significant periods of time. Freedom from injury has continued this season and he has turned in some good performances. He is less effective on the left and that showed on sunday. When switched to the right or allowed roam across the edge of the penalty are, a la Sinclair, he became more effective and scored a crucial goal. His tackling back was also much improved on sunday., with exception of one bad pass that got us into difficulty. He deserves all of the acolades he has received.

However, IMO, we need to see consistent performances at the sunday level before we can be convinced that we have a new Forrest. I hope it happens.

Forrest’s improvement or lack of will have an influence on Robert’s future, as will the progress of our youths, e,g., Nisbet.

Exciting times ahead, if only because we have many options to explore.

Perhaps worth considering that Barcelona took a battering (ended 1-1 but was a battering at the weekend? Evidence that the CL game took something out of them?

Agree regarding Ciftci, Efe to Wolves, McGregor, Christie on loan.
Commons to the Hibees we need them back.
Gordon is not a bad goalkeeper, in the last two games two brilliant saves, he is motivated at Celtic.
DeVries should also be shown the door, he is disaster.
Remember u did not Rate Jamsie a few months ago, but BR has got the best out of them.
I would like BR to bring in Miller, Nesbitt or som of the other younger players against the weaker teams in the league.
If we draw or lose, maybe not a bad thing as some of the younger players have talent.
This has been proven in the UCL under twenty games.
Overall the future is bright it is green
