Celtic Diary Wednesday November 2: So Close…But Much Better

Celtic were left needing to win at least one of their remaining Champions League games if they are to continue in Europe after christmas despite earning a draw in Germany last night.

Moussa Dembele’s penalty cancelled out Lindt’s opener for Borussia Moenchengladbach but despite a couple of late chances the hoops couldn’t quite finish them off.

It finished 1-1 but the truth is it could easily have gone either way, and both sides will rue misses that could have turned this game into a six goal thriller.

Celtic were unlucky when Sinclair curled a shot onto the post, as were Borussia when Hahn did the same thing in the second half, and both keepers were forced to make saves that were befitting a game at this level.

Celtic showed great patience after the equaliser, and probed rather than pummelled the German defence, which almost brought about the winner through subs Liam Henderson, who couldn;t believe the space he got, and Calum MacGregor , who did well to get into a one on one position after a great ball from another sub Patrick Roberts.  but the tight angle made it more difficult to score than some would argue.

A draw was a fair result, and another sign of progress under the new manager, but it may turn out to be too little too late as Manchester City justified their wage packets by turning in a superb second half performance to beat Barcelona 3-1.

As you can see, their crowd went doo lally with delight..

Image result for Man city 3 Barcelona 1

The group now looks like this..

Group C

Played Won Draw Lost For Against Goal difference Points
FC Barcelona
4 3 0 1 14 4 10 9
Manchester City FC
4 2 1 1 10 8 2 7
VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach
4 1 1 2 4 7 -3 4
Celtic FC
4 0 2 2 4 13 -9 2

It doesn’t look good for Celtic, but it could be worse. As Borussia already have four points, two draws in the next two games would see Celtic eliminated from Europe because of the head to head.

However, a win in Manchester next week coupled with a defeat for Borussia in Barcelona would place the hoops above the Germans, so to secure Europa football one win and equalling or bettering the Germans against Manchester city at home to Barcelona would do.

To stay in the Champions League, two wins, and  Manchester city failing to win against Borussia would see Celtic qualify and sevral liver transplants booked for January.

I’m still optimistic.

Last night all five defenders played superbly, especially Emilio Izaguirre, and it was nice to see a bit of aggression in the side. Craig Gordon was on hand to do what he had to, he couldn;t be blamed for the goal, and by and large the other defenders did their bit.

Scott Brown was outstanding again, and bar one or two mistakes, he was ably and energetically supported by Stuart Armstrong.

The play was switched between the three attacking midfielders, who again, worked their hearts out, and Moussa Dembele, for me, had his best game so far for Celtic.

Although he could do with someone alongside him. his style suits having a partner, if only to distract defenders so he can get a bit more space.

He won a few headers, and found himself in space a few times, but there was no one to help him out, and had there been, especially late on, things may have been different.

But it is what it is, and it shows how far we’ve come that we all feel more than a little disappointed Celtic didn;t record only their second away win at this level, but that can wait a couple of weeks.

Maybe I’m daft, but there’s no reason to give up on this season so far….and Moussa Dembele agrees..

We’ll keep believing we can continue,

We’ll take it game-by-game and hopefully we can still be in Europe.

“I think we played much better football (in Germany), we believed in ourselves and we had a lot of chances.

“We deserved better in the game.

We keep learning and hopefully in the next one we can get a result.”

Unusually for Rodgers, though probably a measure of his disappointment, he singled out Calum MacGregor for public criticism after the substitute had missed a late chance to win the game;

We should have scored.

He has either got to score or square it to finish,” See when I get him in the dressing room, I’m going to cut his balls off and roll them down the corridor.

“I thought some of our link-up play to create the possibilities was excellent.

“He has arrived into the box and had his shot but unfortunately for us it didn’t go in.

“It is very important to create the opportunity but that was probably the moment we felt we could win it.”

Eagle eyed readers may well have spotted the sentence added to that quote by the author.

But before that, and you can see how he may just be upset, Rodgers had said..

I’m disappointed we didn’t win the game. I thought we were the best team.

“I’m really proud of the players because I said them that, in order for us to improve, we needed to play with personality.

“And the personality we showed in the game was outstanding.

“We were very brave on the ball and opened up the pitch to play. We built the game and secured the game created chances with real speed on the counter attack and we had chances to win.

“We hit the post and could have scored at the end.

……

“But that result was no more that we deserved, I felt.

“It was an outstanding team performance and the beginning for us, really, at this level in terms of the personality we need to play with.

“What was important for us was to get some sort of result.

“But I said to the players beforehand that win lose or draw I wanted us to play the way we know we can.

“I wanted to show we can come away to a really tough place in Europe and perform.

“So for me they deserve a huge amount of credit.

Rodgers has every right to be proud of his players, and pleased with his own contribution. After the seven goal drubbing at the Nou Camp, the players could have been traumatised. Instead, they’ve given us a couple of nights to remeber, and there’s still an outside-so far outside that its only visible with binoculars-chance of remaining in europe after Christmas.

Even if we don’t, there’s been nothing to be ashamed of, and for once, we can actually look forward to the next campaign instead of dreading it.

The big problem will be trying to hold on to a couple of the better players.

Teirney, Simunovic, Sinclair and especially Dembele have all attracted their suitors, and it will be difficult for Rodgers to keeo this squad together and strengthen wth a couple of transfer windows in between.

Still, thats a problem for another day, and you’ll be relieved to know its not just one that affects Celtic.

New kids on the block “rangers ” have a level they are trying to aspire to as well, as they try to consolidate their place in the top division, and it looks like they are working flat out to avoid their talent being plundered;

Rangers confident they can hold on to kid Billy Gilmour with

promise of pathway to the Ibrox first team

Who ?

THE midfielder is signed at Ibrox until the end of the season at least but English clubs can make their move as soon as he turns 16.

Ah. He must be their Karamoke and Moussa Dembele all rolled into one.

RANGERS remain confident they can keep Billy Gilmour with the promise of a clear development pathway in the coming 18 months all the way to first-team level.

The 15-year-old could be lost to the big guns of English football for as little as £100,000 with Chelsea, Manchester City , Arsenal and Manchester United all eyeing a move for the kid, currently starring for Scotland in the Victory Shield in Edinburgh.

Tottenham, Everton and Southampton are also keen on the midfielder, who has been tipped for a top team breakthrough soon if he commits to the Ibrox club.

Gilmour, from Ayrshire, is signed to Rangers until the end of the season at least, but English clubs can make their move as soon as he turns 16.

Perhaps Chelsea, Manchester city and Arsenal see him lining up alongside Moussa Dembele in five or six years time.

Its good to see the Record highlighting this problem, in fairness, as cash strapped Scottish minnows can ill afford to lose out financially to wealthy English raiders, but at least the Ibrox club can take comfort from the fact that Celtic could have said to have robbed Dembele from Fulham, paying only £500,000, whilst remaining confident that biddin gfor the Frenchman will probably start at around £20 million.

I hope that makes them feel better.

Especially this guy, who presumably saw his bet go down at roughly the same time Dembele was pulled down…

The two games with A German Team, as they have become known, show exactly what football should be about, two great games, watched by two great sets of supporters.

Borussia also showed that they are a club to be respected when they handed a cheque for 3,000 euros to the Celtic Foundation, for the choir that sang to them when they were in Glasgow.

Morning Ralph,
Great Diary, wonderful Diary and not to forget, you are great, wonderful and i agree with you AGAIN 🙂
( That should be enough to collect a second caption comp win)!
Really happy with the team performance last night and Brendan got his tactics spot on.
Izaguirre was outstanding alongwith Moussa, in fact fuck it, they were all excellent.
My only source of frustration was our ability to give the opposition the ball back as quickly as we can.
I agree that Moussa and Griffiths together would be a welcome change in some if not all games.
One other thing, i think Celtic are progressing under our Brendan, long may that continue.

P.S. I think i love you Ralph and i’ve got your xmas present already!

Barca next then Manchester in December.

Last nights Clyde SuperScoreboard had Gordon Dalziel going on and on about how he rated Dembele but how he would never become a £20m player at Celtic..you’re right Gordon…hes passed that already.

Great show from Celtic and kudos to Brendan and his team. When assistant Chris Davies was doing Airport chats on way out, he kept saying “We have a plan and hope to implement it”. So refreshing to see some vision and execution.

Lots of positives to take and many players will have learnt so much, 100% concentration and massive stamina needed as well as ownership and being willing to take the ball in dangerous areas.

I know its “only” 2 draws but technically we are still in with an interest with 2 games to go and in this Group of Death where even Dortmund spend over 30m on their defence, that’s more than enough for me.

Lets get the League business done and then really go for it next year with a stable strong spine through the side and class players throughout who can give 90 mins or get subbed for a worthy hungry replacement without detriment.

Wooooft The champion sooker.

Broony was the best player on the park last night,by a mile,I was disappointed with Rogic!s contribution and i thought that Armstrong was weak, continually losing or giving the ball away, while McGregor well is not Tic. class.
Brendan was correct,he should be disappointed the German Team were there for the taking, they looked shaky.
Work in progress sums up the team,it will improve, once we lose big Petes signings.
It annoys me to see that picture of the blazers, wtf do they do,apart from leeching of the club.
The stars once again were that wonderful, wonderful travelling support, the true heart of the club.

The post refers to his career so far at the Tic.not just his miss last night,he does not impress me at all.So roll on January, to enable us to bring in players more suited to the Tic.
No more sand dancers or weak fearties, only good going forward,we need stronger mid fielders, better at tracking back and puting tackles in.

The 3000 euros donated by Borussia probably barely covered the cost of the blazers previous nights visit to the local red light district.
12 of them. could have left 10 at home and donated twice as much.
Armstrong was outstanding, ran his bollocks off for 90.
some of his deliveries and final balls are shocking but that’s what coaches are for , to work on his negatives.

The most encouraging aspect of last night’s performance was the second half imposition on Borussia M of Celtic’s sort of ice-hockey style of play. Meaning the constant shuffling the ball back to a player “on point” while forward players searched for space. It worked well against the Israelis, the Sheep and Murderwell at Celtic Park; last night they had the confidence to do it away at a very good Bundesliga team. With a little more luck we might have won but that would have been unfair to the home team.

we are definitely improving at this level of football. As the game went on you could see us grow more and more into the game. We defended really well and kept our shape throughout the game, my only criticism is that we still give the ball away too easily at times but we will get better at that with time and that is also the area where Brendan wants to strengthen, a midfielder who is technically and physically strong on the ball who can keep possession under pressure.
This season was always going to be a learning curve in Europe and we are learning fast so next season should be really exciting for us and i expect us to fly through the qualifiers with ease and compete well in the group stages.

Although Armstrong was guilty of giving the ball away at times last night, he also did a bloody good job winning it back.
Central midfield is the hardest position to play on the park ( sure i was one myself for 20 years).
He is a good player but like all players he needs to play consistently over a period of time and games, to fully assess his true value to the side!

Looking back to last night we turned the tables on them, and great work by the management team. They were as good as anything I had seen at Celtic Park that night.
Gordon 7 points his kicking lets hims down.
Gamboa 7 we might just have a player here when he gets upto match fitness
Izzy, great to see the wee man back to his best 9.
Eric Steady kept it calm 8
Lustig not his best position, some passing not great but a guy who gives his all. 7.
Armstrong 6 can’t beat his enthusiasm, but at this level he has to do much better.
Rogic Always a threat think he is getting subbed far too quickly, for inferior players 6. He could come up with a magic moment at anytime.
Broony commanding performance from the captain 10.
Forrest, 5 First half non existent started the second half much better, but Roberts should be in front of him on the team sheet.
Sinclair Always a threat great runs so unlucky not to score 8
Dembele, you just know he has the beating of defenders one v one. Bargain buy let’s hope he can stay for at least another season 9.
McGregor 6 Henderson 6 Roberts 7
Roberts great link up to set up the chances near the end.
Brendan 10 spot on tactically.

It was a good performance under tough circumstances. The bhoys surprised me(in a good way) especially as the game wore on. I’m proud of this bunch and their manager. We’re still at the table and anything can happen. Can we beat Barca at home? Answer: it has happened. Thanks to Brendan and the bhoys for giving us hope. We’re in the ‘big show’ where The Celtic have always belonged. It was a good performance against a team which rarely loses big matches at home. For a second, I thought we would get that McGregor goal, maybe with a pass. It was a tough angle. Peace and good health to all you tims, fenian bastards, etc.

Agree with much that has been posted here today – a really good performance overall. The key to progress is to stop giving away easy possession to the opposition – we did this far too much last night and that only puts us under undue pressure. If the team can reduce the number of stray passes and maintain that sort of performance level, then we’ll be in with a shout in future CL games. It is also important to see Scottish lads in the team – we need to bring on our own talent, supported by the likes of Eric S, Sinclair and Dembele. Tierney shows what can be done – and although others have their doubts about McGregor, he is certainly a valuable player to have and can only get better. Henderson too didn’t look out of place when he came on.

A really enjoyable game last night, two teams playing the right way with two sets of fans backing their teams the right way too.

The ref was poor, he gave the penalty but punished us many other times for little fouls he didn’t seem to give the other way, Dembele was away once by being stronger than his opponents and got penalised, and with his assistants gave corners when it should have been goal kicks etc. Thank fully it didn’t come to anything but he seemed a bit of a homer (until the penalty of course, which in Scotland would have seen Dembele booked for simulation)

I wish some of the other players were as strong as Moussa – Armstrong, McGregor etc get to the gym and develop your upper body, so often eased off the ball because the opponent was stronger. That said Armstrong kept going and offered more dynamism than Bitton would have given.

I was also disappointed we seemed to settle for a draw in the last few minutes, content to knock it around at the back when playing against ten men, would have liked more urgency

All of that said I d have taken a draw before the game and at times we were on the ropes last night, and I think after the game in Glasgow Munchengladbach maybe underestimated us a bit. Considering we’ve lost 23 of 26 away games in the Champions league, a draw was a great effort and the team were good, Lustig, Izzy, Brown, Sinclair Dembele and at times Rogic particularly impressive. Surely Lustig will get a new deal, he’s been as rejuvenated as Brown this season?

Roberts should now be ahead of Forrest whose form has dipped again and Henderson continues to impress me when he gets his chances.

If i had been offered 1-1 before kick off I would have took it, with ten minutes to go 1-1 looked like we let them off lightly. Much improved performance, the movement in the middle i’m always whingeing about was there, apart from the first 15 and last 10, though i would have liked to have seen Rogic and Forrest get more involved. The whole midfield done a lot more defensively, they moved with their markers to deny the numerical advantage on the flanks that Borussia enjoyed the last time when we kept our shape.

On individuals: Izzy was outstanding, goal excepted, he blocked every pass and cross attempt they made. Dembele was superb, dropped back to get the ball, linked up well and even won headers against the tallest player in the Bundesliga. Gamboa didn’t impress me, might start calling him The Ghost as he’s so quick but defensively he’s just not there. My MOTM was Brown, always looking to get involved, always finding a team mate and put in a true captains performance. Special credit to Brendan, he identified where we went wrong last time and he fixed it or, due to injuries, patched it up might be a more apt phrase.

Happy with the result but being greedy I felt the win was within our reach, if only McGregor hadn’t squandered that chance. Good to get a positive result on the road after so many poor ones throughout the years.

They were very well drilled defensively though would like to have seen more players dropping back to look for the ball or shift their markers to make some space. We had a lot of the ball but at times we had to pass amongst our back four because there was little movement. The chances we did create came from movement and slick passing.

More crosses and us firing it across the gap between their defence and midfield could have been a match winner but they were excellent at closing us down when Roberts and Sinclair were in a position to cross. Maybe crosses from deep might have been the answer.

We almost won despite playing with 10 men,yes when you play Forrest you effectively concede that there will be no meaningful contribution from 1 player,he DOES NOT tackle or chase back.

There are times in games where i feel James could and should be doing a lot more.

Thanks for reply. I applaud your faith but I have analysed JF for years,he will never change, never learns.

Going back to our defeat in Neu Camp 2.1 couple of years back,he had opportunity to put ball out at the end we were attacking, did not,was dis-possessed by Alba who started a move then ran the full length of Park to be on the end of a cross….Goal beat 2-1 2 mins into injury time.Trip ruined.

That was Forrest, still does it,watches does not participate, like goal last night watching at edge of box.
I honestly cannot understand BR trusting him, beggars belief.

Ralph,

Class Dairy as usual!

Personally, I am over the moon with the result. Do I believe we should do better in Europe? Of course, we should, because many of our weaknesses are basic errors like giving the ball away and poor finishing. I also fail to understand why distance shooting seems to be off our agenda. This appears to have been the case for several years now. I know some will contradict me by highlighting the likes of the Rogic and Sinclair screamers this season. But, overall, there is far too little in my opinion. Watching football in other countries, we appear to be well below average. It is time to realise we only have good players not 11 Messis who can dribble or pass their way to goal on a regular basis. We should also recognise the need for it when playing barn door defences – we can get plenty of practice at domestic level for sure. It is not that we are short of players who can shoot from beyond two yards. Yes, they will miss 8 times out of 10 but at least it puts added pressure on the opposition to know it can be done and the 2 that go in are 2 more than we are getting just now.

Having said all of this, I am very happy that we have left the away game humiliations behind us. Although 7-0 at the Nou Camp was a heavy defeat, given the opposition and how they played, it was no humiliation. Since then the players have done a great deal to be proud of, even if they could have done better. I am content we are heading towards consistency in Europe. The fact it may take a while before we are last 16 certainties, does not bother me. We tend to forget just how unique 1967 was. No team has ever won the big cup with a similar set of players and in the time scale that The Lions did – all from within a few miles of Celtic Park. The team had only been together for about two seasons and even then, not all of them and not consistenly. Football has changed so much we must resign ourselves to it never happening again.

So, negatives there still are. Basic mistakes are still too regular. Too many players still have too many off days and the tactics are still not always perfect. BUT, if I can hold my head up high and say I am proud of what the team, with all its weakness, has done and especially if I do not feel humiliated, then I am a happy bunny. And, for an auld bastard like me, that is climatic.

Mickalele thanks for that so last night was pretty good against a team from a league like that. I think I probably airbrushed the Stutgart goals out and only retained our being two up. I really think we can do a number against Barcelona.

The budgie has landed.

Joey De Barton has been told he will return to full-time training following the conclusion of a disciplinary procedure. 🙂

Full time training with reprisals.
He will not be training or playing with the first team.
They can’t afford to sack him,so it’s Joey with the under 20s.

Ah! The “Graham Roberts Gambit “!

Methinks case law on constructive dismissal has moved on since the days of ” see’s right and I’ll buy yer shite” Souness.

All of the players were great last night considering the opposition. You cannot compare the current players to the teams in this group, whether it is a German team or MC or Barca.
This is a learning curve, we qualified for the UCL for the first time in three years, BR has brought in quality, he will bring in more and improve the players already there.
We have earned up to 30M Euro’s, 400,000 last night.
The important thing this year is the treble, which with these players we should achieve.
UCL is a bonus, if Europa after Christmas, so be it.
Let’s enjoy the present and look forward to the future, whereas the joke continues on the south side with Joey training with the under twenties squad, methinks money, money, money or lack of.

I thought his IQ was 1 or 2 points higher.

New punishment brought in for delinquents as they are forced to watch endless re-runs of “rangers” matches. Cries of “bring back the birch” heard from many of the young offenders.

Which Celtic won 1-0 after extra time.

A young Lee Wallace sat 8 from the left is grassing up. Again,

Much as I’d love to see Wayne Rooney wear the hoops, the kind of player that we truly need is along the following lines (in my opinion of course):

I hope that Wayne Rooney stays where he is or moves to Everton – he can sit on the bench at both places.

If there was the slightest possibility of Celtic signing Wayne Rooney, we should do it, in my opinion.
He is a world class player!

Was Monti – is I fear he is simply another squad player.
