Celtic Diary Saturday October 1: The Bigger Picture

Celtic are up in Dundee this lunchtime as the reality of League football returns, though only temporarily as there’s another international break until the weekend of October 15. International football, where would we be without it ?

At Celtic Park, presumably.

Some of the players may well be given an extended break to avoid any kind of hangover as manager Brendan Rodgers looks to possibly even stretch the lead at the top of the table, whilst others will be recalled to be given a chance to show that they shouldn’t be forgotten just yet.

Except probably Dorus De Vries, who will be given the most extended break of all, which is a shame, as the excuses to remind him he’s hopeless will become fewer and further between. Mind you, he’ll probably be happy with that, and if anyone can give him back his confidence, then Stevie Woods, the goalkeeping coach, is just that man.

Whilst many may wonder what Rodgers sees in the keeper, here’s some food for thought… from website Soccerlens

Brendan Rodgers received heavy criticism for spending £25 million on then Southampton captain Adam Lallana. Two years hence, Lallana might be one of the most in-form players in his position at the moment.

Perhaps it was his price tag weighing him down, or the manner in which Rodgers used him, but Lallana struggled slowly after his move from St. Mary’s. The England international was expected to fill some of the void, left by Luis Suarez, but couldn’t replicate the form that earned him the Liverpool move in the first place.

His ability regularly came under question and with the opinion divided on Brendan Rodgers, fans became divided into exactly those camps as far as Lallana was concerned too. The ones who liked Rodgers were pro-Lallana and the fans who didn’t, dismissed towards him.

After Rodgers had got sacked, many thought Lallana would be one of the first players to be shipped out by Jurgen Klopp, the German replacing Rodgers. Almost exactly one year hence, Lallana has made himself one of the most important players in Klopp’s system.

Pressing is the term associated substantially with Klopp, and it is why people thought Lallana would be shipped out quickly by Klopp. The German’s high-tempo system doesn’t complement Lallana on paper, but how Lallana makes himself useful despite this is because of the speed of thought he possesses. He knows exactly when to press, and he can play quick passes, as shown in the drubbing of Hull, to ensure that the defensive block set by the opponent isn’t very useful.

Lallana has always brought in enthusiasm to the team, even from the bench. However, the reason why he is more efficient this season is the new position Jurgen Klopp is operating him in. The addition of Sadio Mane sees Lallana in a more central, and a deeper spot in the midfield. When joining the attack, he advances from the midfield, which gets him more involved in the game, as opposed to being static in a more attacking and wider role. He also tracks back and tries to help the defence.

This almost box-to-box midfield role Klopp has assigned him is working like a charm so far.

Lallana was also criticised for his lack of end product and is something he has evidently worked on. Despite doing well under Klopp last season, and sporadically showing real class, the player still only had four goals and six assists in 30 league games, not an achievement to boast. In his new position, he has three goals and three assists in 6 league games so far, and these numbers suggest that Lallana could end this season as one of his most productive ones if he performs with similar zeal and fervour.

Lallana’s somewhat languid style and habit of rarely lasting 90 minutes under Rodgers were also something he received criticism for, and the player has made amends in this department as well. He now looks determined to provide non-stop work for however long Klopp demands him on the pitch. This shouldn’t be surprising as he also worked tirelessly under Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham and the current Spurs boss and Klopp do have equally demanding, and vaguely similar systems and managerial styles.

Maybe Rodgers just brought him in too soon, and disrupted the rhythym of the side, and De Vries never got a chance to settle.

For those of you who think I’ve been a little harsh on De Vries, have a think about Lallana, and his sudden resurgence.

Some players just take a bit longer to get into their stride, and maybe De Vries is one of them.

Liverpool fans are not noted for being patient, as the game usually finishes only moments before the shops shut, and there’s shoplifting to be done before they get home, so Lallana, and consequently Rodgers, who had taken their club closer to a league title than anyone since the heady days of the eighties got the blunt end of the stick, in the same way that Dalglish got for buying the midfielder Jordan Henderson, who has since gone on to be captain, or at least a mainstay of the team.

Silly sods.

Back at the ranch, and players such as Christian Gamboa, Emilio Izaguirre, Eoghan O’connell, Stuart Armstrong , Liam Henderson, Calum MacGregor and even Nadir Ciftci could reasonably expect to be involved today, which adds a bit of spice to the game, which will be live on telly at noon.

After that, the rest of the weekend, and the next two weeks, are your own.

So try to make the most of it.

This afternoon, for example, you could keep an eye on the results as there are possibly huge changes to the current league positions-except Celtics, of course, with the league already looking as though Hearts and Aberdeen will require snookers by probably January, with a huge range of possible standing by tea time.

As this table illustrates,

Wouldn’t it be interesting if ross county ended up second, Aberdeen seventh, Hearts eighth and “rangers ” tenth.

We;d have league reconstruction sorted before Christmas, no relegation until they manage to put together a team and a manager that can handle the top division, which could take quite some time.

Especially with Barry Ferguson and his tracksuit lined up to replace Warburton and his hat. Thats not rhyming slang, and I wasn’t referring to David Weir.

This show could run and run, and with regular introductions of new characters with endles comic potential, a stage show to rival Celtic -The Musical must be in the planning stage somewhere.

“Rangers” -The Cabaret, has a ring to it. Though the censor might want to have a look at some of their “musical ” numbers.

They could even get Jeremy Kyle to narrate it, although i can’t imagine any of the current-or past-directors being happy with the idea of a lie detector.

Though on the bright side, the audience would get to see two of their favourite shows in one place.

TV football pundit and former Manchester City player Niall Quinn may have had his priviliges revoked at the Etihad, as he upset a lot of Manchester City fans when he appeared to cheer for Celtic during Wednesdays champions League game.

The reaction from City fans on twitter suggests that he won;t be getting any christmas cards;

There’s a whole documentary waiting to be made on how Manchester city is viewed by former players and fans now that they are one of those rich mans playthings.

Can’t imagine Sky rushing to make it though.

Speaking of TV, although of a much higher quality, one way to while away some of the free time over the next couple of weeks would be to find the Jimmy Johnstone documentary shown last night on BBC Alba, put together by Purple TV, managed to make the viewer-me-laugh, cry and smile proudly at the story, so carefully and respectfully told, of a man that makes us laugh, cry and snile proudly, often at the same time.

It showed his family and friends remebering the good times, and the bad, with equal measure, and allowed them plenty of space to tell it from their point of view.

Two contributions were outstanding, that of Mrs Johnstone, who spoke lovingly of her man, whilst injecting enough Glasgow humour to make it real-such as when john hughes and Jimmy were heading out the door for a pint, and she said to them something like

If he gets better i’ll kill him myself

brought to life the relationship between Jimmy, his family and his friends.

The other contribution, the one that had nme welling up, came from Bertie Auld, who was clearly upset when he remembered the phone call from Mrs johnstone that had the message he was expecting, but dreading nevertheless.

What did Bertie miss most about him ?

Him, himself. “

For those too young to have sen him play, or read about his antics in the papers, on and off the field, the programme shows you what the rest of us have been harping on about all these years.

And for us, well, its a chance to look back at something we may never see again, perhaps in any sport anywhere in the world.

A team who actually cared about each other, and still do, even after all these years….

A team we all care about, in fact..

Wonder if they will have a minuetes silence for Alan Cousin today at Dens,he never played full time fitba. always just 2/3 days per week training, another great player, how sad.

I remember being at Bobby Murdochs funeral on the friday and me and a few mates were through at the Barrowlands on tbe Saturday, cannae mind if it was CATB or the Wolfetones, but Jinky came on stage and the roof was lifted from it’s rafters, a few tears flew at that moment.

Enjoy it Monti, though it cocentrates rightly on his family, his performance in the Destifano testimonial was his best ever,he was going round defenders in circles, what a player, pure majic.
Sadly big Billy and Tommy G.and the rest of those LIONS are coming to the end of their journey,to say that we will miss them is a huge understatement,my een are welling up now, thinking about those marvelous men, players friends. We are ever in their debt.

They and jinky are irreplaceable, working class ghuys with a love for Celtic,no prima donnas,I was at the”wee mans funeral” and it was to a man/woman/child very emotional, the documentary showed him in all his glory and all his weakneses and he is loved even more because of his frailties, his wife/family were terrific not hiding from anything yet their love for him shone through. His great rival and friend W Henderson comes out as a lovely human being,he was also some player. My mate has a black and white photo of this great great team walking across London Road led by a wee wummin in a had scarf,no big heids just a bunch of working class ghuys, terrific stuff.Hail Hail.

I believe DeVries is suffering from Big Club syndrome.
Funny you should mention Llalana as Dejan Lovren has taken a good while to settle at Liverpool too from Southampton?
As did Benteke and numerous others down the years.
It cannot be easy moving to a side where it is expected that you hit the ground running straight away.

That might well turn out to be the case as Brendan hasn’t been his Manager since 2011 but he was voted Forrests player of the year last year by their Support Monti?
This suggests he has a bit more to offer than we have seen so far.
Too early to right him off I think.

After going over yesterday banterfest I realised it is probably getting a bit tedius for most and upsetting for some.
One post in particular made me realise it has gone too far and some things that should probably be taboo in an open forum.
I’m not homophobic as a rule as I see all people regardless of colour ,creed or sexuality as equals.
I don’t find the murder of kids or innocent civilians funny at all though it appears the trolls do?
For that reason I feel it best to keep my thoughts to Football alone.

Brendan said that if they (City) bring their ‘A’ game and we bring ours they will win which I thought a bit smart at the time. You could argue that they had two starters missing but I thought they were as good as they could be…because of the way we played…our ‘A’ game, the players, manager and all the staff playing at the top of their game as a team, the fans playing their part yet again…the way it should be.

HT 0-0. Celtic playing well except in the final third. Dundee are industrial in their tackling and are pressing Celtic high up the park. The home side are relying on high balls over the top to catch Celtic, so far with no success. Both Dundee fbs have been booked and we need to exploit that, but Forrest has moved inside where he has been less effective. Chances have fallen to Sinclair who does not have his shooting boots on so far.

Several Dundee players are determined to injure Tierney and the ref seems to have a problem keeping up with the play.

Dundee are not out of this by any means and they missed a good headed chance about 10 minutes before HT.

FT 0-1 to Celtic. Scott Brown goal takes the points.

Boring second half with Celtic holding the ball but unable to create many chances to kill the game. I cannot remember a real chance for Dundee from open play in the second half. They added some excitement from long throw-ins into our box and the odd corner but they did not have a cutting edge.

Grif and Roberts got on for a workout. Three points from a bread and butter game. Best forgotten.

Thought we dominated the game today without being spectacular.
Most pleasing aspect for me were:
The partnership of Erik and Jozo in Central defence
Craig Gordons use of the ball and distribution from the back
Scott Browns performance from whistle to whistle
Clean sheets have been a bit scarce so nice to secure one
Negatives or points of concern:
Starting Dembele when Griffiths was fit I think given his input v Man Citeh Dembele deserved a rest and Griffiths needs games
Not overly convinced Griffiths and Dembele can operat alongside each other yet.
For me both seem a bit disjointed when they are not the point of attack?
That may change in time but right now for me it’s one or the other atm.
Last point and I brought this up the other week (Inverness I think)when he brings Roberts on I don’t get swapping wings with Sinclair because for me neither look that comfortable on their “wrong” sides?
I would prefer Brendan played them on their stronger sides.
Other than that a solid result in a ground we have struggled on in the past.
On a side note I hope we keep an eye on Dundees keeper Bain who for me seems to do well against us when we meet?

My personal opinion was (and still is) that last season Lustig Brown Bitton and Johansen had poor seasons on the whole.
Brown could hardly pass a ball 50% of the time and the other 3 were patchy at best on and off.
This had a serious effect on the side moving the ball from front to back and as a result our play deteriorated from the previous Season.
Lustig and Brown have started this Season in the best of form Bitton has come onto a game and as a result with the addition of Toure, Sinclair and a resurgent Forrest we look like a team transformed.
Even though we are playing the same formation with the same high press.
This has been the best form I have seen Brown in for the past 4 years.
One thing that still concerns me though is Foul rate (terrible tackler btw)and his seeming inability to clear a ball when required.
Today he put Tierney right under pressure trying to play head tennis 10 yards outside the box with 3 Dundee players pressing up?
Little things I know but potentially game changing given his position on the park.
All that aside they are gelling well again as a Midfield pairing.
Bodes well.

I thought today was a great performance considering we had an extremely difficult match on Wednesday. Yes, some players seemed tired but we passed the ball very well and all we were really missing was the incisive pass into the hole where Sinclair was moving a lot of the time.

Fans were great but personally I’d ask that we cut out so many of the rebel songs, yes we have an affinity with Ireland but we are better than them and as we always like to say unlike them, we don’t dwell on the past. Let’s prove that!

Also, may not be the forum to say but I’d also like to say condolences to their fan who died in the coach crash today and a speedy recovery to those injured. This is a game we all love, definitely in different ways but that’s the beauty of it!

COYBIG!

Marc,
Rebel songs aren’t sectarian!
Maybe educate yourself about the subject before criticising our support!

Monti,

I never said they were sectarian songs just songs which refer to the past and for which our club / support have been criticised for singing previously.

We have so many fantastic songs why sing the ones that draw negative publicity towards ourselves.

I’m not going to get into some tit for tat debate, it’s just my opinion and I’ve been drinking since just after 09:00 this morning.

Let’s focus on the positives, under Brendan we’re once again united, we’re playing fantastic attractive, attacking football (the type we were promised by Deila when he took over).

The club seems rejuvenated and so are the fans. It’s amazing what a little investment can do for the general mood.

Hail, hail!

LET THE PEOPLE SING

Hail hail mate, I never said I didn’t like the songs but like everyone / everything, we must move with the times.

I love hearing the songs on the bus and when we’re partying after skelping that mob but should we sing them publicly as we found them acceptable before?

That’s my opinion and I think I’m probably in the minority but like arseholes, everyone has one.

Let the people sing indeed!

Marc – if you know your history – goes the line. All songs just like all arseholes are unequal. Songs commemorating a struggle for freedom and independence from colonialism are quite different from sectarian bigoted songs. These songs help create the atmosphere at Celtic Park and I at least am
Proud of them. Let the people sing. This is a red herring topic and I’m
Now done with it

Kathleen Mavourneen awake from thy slumber,
The blue mountains glow, in the suns golden light,
Ah! where is the spell that once hung on thy numbers,
Arise in thy beuty, thou star of my night,

Mavourneen, Mavourneen,my sad tears are falling,
to think that from Erin and thee i must part,
It may be for years and it may be forever,
Then why art thou silent thou voice of my heart,
It may be for years and it may be forever,
Then why art thou silent,Kathleen Mavourneen.

Was watching the chelsea game there and the performance of kante , he is exactly the type of player we need , nicks the ball of the oposition not with tackles but by reading where the ball will go , always in the right place to grab it then pass it simple to start an attack, very much like paul lambert used to do , i think we are missing that player in europe

Wanayama did that all day against Man City. We had him but these players won’t stay too long in Scotland.

Your hatred of a Celtic manager has become quite disturbing. Ronny might have not been up to the job but he gave his all and now has a deep love for the club like we all do.

It also might interest you that Ronny is not due to take over Vålerenga until Januaruy 2017.

so wank on wank off ya fud 😉
